Trivit to Lift the eggs off the bottom so there's no direct conntact between
egg and heat source. If you presuurise, let pressure
down slowly or eggs could explode. Same as in a microwave if inside gets past
boiling.
We shell ours and call them poached.

Sorry folks it is slightly off topic. But do you need a trivet for hard
boiling eggs? I checked somewhere and the blogger said
put the eggs on Trivet.

What’s the use of a trivet in the instant pot?

app-specific passwords question

2018-05-13 Thread Daniel McGee

Hi all. So I plan to install outlook, gmail and inbox across my two devices and
after trying out each app, evaluate which one I will go with.

However, I have a question about re using an app-specific password.Having one
password on my two devices, would it be bad practice if I created one
app-specific password for say, the gmail app and use it again on the second
device?

Or should I create each app-specific password per each device I'm using?

I wanted to go with the best security practice and wondered which idea you
would recommend from a security point of view.

Re: Sling TV.

2018-05-13 Thread Lynn White
Yes I have both on the iPhone and Apple TV. I can’t say that I’m a fan of it
either way.

To me, Directvnow is far more accessible. But even it has some drawbacks. For
instance, you can favor a channel. But, I have yet to be able to find my
favorites.

Even though I’m critical of Sling, I will stay with it because the monthly
investment is small and I’m hopeful that it will become more accessible.

I do not find Sling to be very accessible either from the iPhone nor Apple TV.
For me, Directvnow is a better service as far as accessibility is concerned.

The only issue I have with Directvnow is once I create a list of favorites, I
can’t find the favorites list feature.

RE: to get the plantronics 5200 or the 5220 or the Jawbone icon

2018-05-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I tried to find the 5220 since I had never heard about it and while I found it
on I think Amazon.com I couldn’t really see the difference.
I think Casey should also consider the Apple Airpods, a bit more money, but
while I still haven’t bought them myself they get such good reviews and I think
I have yet to hear a comment from anybody who has them that is not good.
Otherwise the 5200 is probably the way to go if he doesn’t mind the size. I
prefer the smaller Edge which is also very good.
I have however pretty much decided to get a pair of Airpods as well as soon as
the second generation with what I assume will be the W2 chip is coming out. My
guess is that that will be this year, maybe in September/October along with the
new iPhones. I hope Apple is not doing with the Airpods what they did with SIRI
which is first make a huge deal about it and then sort of make a few token
improvements and leave it at that.
After all, they took away the 3.5mm headphone jack because they believe the
future is wireless so now they better deliver on that future by making these
things a lot better than they are now.

RE: app-specific passwords question

2018-05-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I don’t think you can use an app specific password on two different devices.
Maybe try it, but I think the point is that you create one for each device in
order to maintain the security of your two-factor authentication.
The point of app specific passwords is that you use them once on a specific
device for whichever app they were created for, if you ever don’t use said
device any more you can log into your Apple, Microsoft or gmail account and
revoke/delete the app specific password for said device to make extra sure it
can’t be used again.
I did read one article just now which said the security of app specific
passwords is a bit of a pretence since according to said article anybody who
could gain access to your app specific password can use it to access your
account, apparently even to log into your account online. But this article was
4 years old and if you need app specific passwords that means you have
two-factor authentication enabled and hence logging into to your account online
should require you to also enter a code given to you by text message or via an
authenticator app such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.
I certainly never use an app specific password again and if I buy a new
computer or a new iPhone I always generate another one to use with that
particular device.

Hi, app specific passwords are only for iCloud email addresses. You will get a

2018-05-13 Thread Cristóbal
I use the 5200 for work purposes. It has four microphones and is fine. Much
better than the Voyager Legend that it replaced. It is on the bulky side, but
actually quite comfortable and the fact that it takes the standard micro USB
instead of that magnetic charging port that the Legend had is convenient too.

Trivit to Lift the eggs off the bottom so there's no direct conntact between
egg and heat source. If you presuurise, let pressure
down slowly or eggs could explode. Same as in a microwave if inside gets
past boiling.
We shell ours and call them poached.

Sorry folks it is slightly off topic. But do you need a trivet for hard
boiling eggs? I checked somewhere and the blogger said
put the eggs on Trivet.

What's the use of a trivet in the instant pot?

RE: app-specific passwords question

2018-05-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Many services where two-factor authentication is enabled require app specific
passwords. I have enabled two-factor authentication for my Microsoft
Outlook.com account as well as for my Office 365 Business account and I had to
create app specific passwords fo from both services to set up my Outlook and
Mail apps on the PC and iPhone.

Hi, app specific passwords are only for iCloud email addresses. You will get a
code sent to your other trusted devices when you try to log in with another
device or browser. At least with my outlook apple ID I don't need to create app
specific passwords.

Sieghard

Hi all. So I plan to install outlook, gmail and inbox across my two devices and
after trying out each app, evaluate which one I will go with.

However, I have a question about re using an
app-specific
password.Having
one password on my two devices, would it be bad practice if I created one
app-specific password for say, the gmail app and use it again on the second
device?

Or should I create each
app-specific
password
 per each device I'm using?

I wanted to go with the best security practice and wondered which idea you
would recommend from a security point of view.

See how much I know lol. It looks like a lot of websites are moving to app

Sample of a recipe scanned with Seeing AI Document channel and KNFB Reader Version 3

2018-05-13 Thread Richard Turner
Below is a recipe that was scanned with Seeing AI Document scan. This was on
an iPhone SE using the Fopydo Scanning Stand at its normal height of about 11.5
inches. Seeing AI shares the file as an HTML document, so it was opened with
FireFox and I copied and pasted it into Word as is:
Seeing AI had one scanning error, the word continue was messed up.

Following this scan is one done with the latest KNFB Reader version 3.0.
Notice the difference in formatting between the Seeing AI scan and the KNFB
Reader scan.
The recipe is titled sunstruck Fudge, a recipe my wife and I came up with based
on a recipe that was supposed to be Sees Fudge that used chocolate chips.

*The Seeing AI scan:

"SUNSTRUCK" FUDGE

Ingredients

4 1/2 cups sugar

1 large can evaporated milk

17.6 ounce Trader Joe's Pound Plus 72% dark chocolate bar. imported from Belgium

7 oz. jar marshmallow cream

1 tsp. vanilla

1. cube butter cut up into pieces
2. cups chopped nuts

Directions

Break chocolate into pieces and place in a large mixing bowl. Place this bowl
inside a larger bowl that has hot water in it. This will slowly melt the
chocolate. Add to the chocolate: marshmallow cream and butter.

Place sugar and milk in a tall-sided sauce pan and bring to a boil. Then conun
boiling for exactly ten minutes. Stir the mixture quite often and watch
it because tends to boil over.

Add this mixture to the chocolate and mix well. Stir in the nuts and vanilla.
When it begins to get stiff, pour into a large buttered pan-a Jellyroll type
pan, 9x13 glass dish works fine.

Let set 24 hours in cool place. Cut into squares.

  * KNFB reader version 3.0 scan and saved as a PDF. I opened it with Adobe
DC on my computer and pasted it into Word as is:
Note: KNFB reader did not get the title of the recipe which is at the top of
the document. It put the date as the first line when exported as a PDF.
Also the phone was never moved on the Fopydo stand, so both apps had the exact
same view of the document.

I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was wondering if anyone has an I.D. Mate bar code reader and what their
thoughts are as far as having a standalone device as opposed to using an app
on their iPhone or some other bar code scanning app like SeeingAI?

Someone is selling some I.D. Mate bar code readers on a buy/sell list I
belong to and while I’m somewhat interested, I’m wondering if ultimately,
the app more or less duplicates what the I.D. Mate bar code reader does?
That or is the singular task that the I.D. Mate bar code reader is designed
for is that much more superior at what it does that having a stand alone bar
code scanning device may be worth having? Also, for the record, I am
completely blind so any features that the I.D. Mate bar code reader may
have to assist folks with low vision wouldn’t matter to me and not be some
sort of plus for having the device.

Would appreciate any input or observations.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Hi,

We have an I.D. Mate Quest, and I love it. I find it quicker and more reliable
at finding the barcode than most apps. I use it almost daily to identify
packages and hear the directions for cooking. Maybe I am just not as
proficient as some others at finding barcodes with the phone apps, including
Seeing AI, but I find that the I.D. Mate is a lot more forgiving as to how it
is positioned to find the barcode.

We also use the recording feature to label some things that it can't identify
by the barcode, such as meats we bring home from the meat store.

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Richard Turner
First, which versions of the ID Mate are they selling and for how much?

New they run $1299.00.
The current model is the Galaxy. The prior one was the Quest I think and the
Summit before that, or I could have those reversed.

There are older models, but I personally wouldn’t spend the money.
We have an ID Mate Quest at work.

The ID Mate scanners have no screen, so they are great for those who are
totally blind. They are a dedicated bar code scanner, so they are very fast
and they handle curves on things like cans and bottles better than an iPhone.
Envision America updates their database about twice a year, after the first
year, I believe it is $50 to update the database.
But, unless you have a large inventory you are trying to keep track of, the
free Seeing AI app’s Product Channel does a great job! And, since it uses an
online database, you don’t have to worry about updates.

The key with Seeing AI is to start with the iPhone camera about a foot or more
away from the item and slowly bring it closer.
I happened to have just used it yesterday on two bottles of wine and a box of
mineral water cans and I would say it may have been a few seconds slower than
an ID Mate. But, only a few seconds.
One of the wines came from Trader Joe’s so I was quite surprised that Seeing AI
had it in its database.

Of course, there are other bar code apps like Digit-eyes…

HTH,
Richard

Subject: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

Hello list,
Was wondering if anyone has an I.D. Mate bar code reader and what their
thoughts are as far as having a standalone device as opposed to using an app on
their iPhone or some other bar code scanning app like SeeingAI?
Someone is selling some I.D. Mate bar code readers on a buy/sell list I belong
to and while I’m somewhat interested, I’m wondering if ultimately, the app more
or less duplicates what the I.D. Mate bar code reader does? That or is the
singular task that the I.D. Mate bar code reader is designed for is that much
more superior at what it does that having a stand alone bar code scanning
device may be worth having? Also, for the record, I am completely blind so any
features that the I.D. Mate bar code reader may have to assist folks with low
vision wouldn’t matter to me and not be some sort of plus for having the device.
Would appreciate any input or observations.
Thanks,
Cristóbal

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Mary Otten
Hi richard,
I have mostly found the barcode scanning feature of seeing AI frustrating. I
have occasionally had luck, especially in the beginning. But now it seems,
admittedly I am often trying it on cans or bottles, that I can get that really
fast beeping which indicates I’m on the barcode. And then it just keeps doing
that. If I move the phone closer or maybe even further away, eventually the
beating goes away, indicating I’ve lost it. But I don’t get that sweet spot
where it actually sees the thing and identifies it. Are used to have a scanner
that AT. guys sold. That connected to a PC and had that multi directional or
whatever they call it scanning like the idea makes do. I would love to have an
ID mate, but the price tag is absurd. Cannot justify it. I sure would like to
know what that last little step is to get from the fast beeps to actual paydirt.

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Cristóbal
He’s selling “new to excellent condition” the I.D. Mate Summit with 16gb
upgraded memory card Latest data base of products dated October 2017 Padded
carry case Genuine power adapter Sample bar codes for use on products that
don't currently have a bar code label. $140.

I asked him this same question and this is what I got back.

“The I.D. Mate bar code reader has a much larger scanning device and is a lot
more sensative to reading bar codes than a smart phone Ap.It also projects
out a blue target for those who have limited vision to assist in getting a bar
code scanned. From what I have heard from those who have both the I.D. mate
and the ap; they tell me the I.D. mate works much better and is far more
accurate.

But then it is also a matter of choice for what works best for each individual.”

This is why I mentioned that I’m completely blind as one of the features he
pointed out has to do with folks who have lo vision which would be irrelevant
to me.

He’s legitimate as far as what he’s selling since he’s always posting
accessibility stuff and computers without complaints from people. For less than
$150 I’m mildly interested, but again, if something like SeeingAI more or less
already does what the I.D. Mate does, then I’m probably going to pass. If it on
the other hand is faster than an app or is more forgiving as far as trying to
scan stuff without hassling with a package or can or whatever then maybe we’re
talking.

Seeing AI is better because it beeps when you're in the proximity of the
barcode. The ID Mate, at least the one I had, gave no such indication, so it
took a lot longer to find the barcode.

I do not have the ID Mate, but it stands to reason that a device with a
deducated function will work better than an add on to a device with many
functions, and, of course, you get what you pay for. The question you need to
ask yourself is would it be worth $1000 to you to be able to perform this
function.

I do not have the ID Mate, but it stands to reason that a device with a
deducated function will work better than an add on to a device with many
functions, and, of course, you get what you pay for. The question you need to
ask yourself is would it be worth $1000 to you to be able to perform this
function.

Cristobal, We have had an I D mate Omni for more than six years and really
enjoy using it. The database is updated twice per year and is quite
comprehensive.

Admittedly, we haven’t played that much with Seeing A I, however, it has been
our experience that it is far easier to locate the bar code with the Omni than
with the Seeing A I barcode channel.  The issue for us is not recognition;
rather, it is locating the barcode.

weather gods question

2018-05-13 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
Hi all. I have a question. I live in Clifton Heights but work in Philadelphia.
When I gto Philadelphia for work, is there a way that I can get weather updates
for Philadelphia instead of getting updates from home? I added Philadelphia to
my favorite places but when I'm at work I still get updates about my home area.

Would appreciate any input or observations.

I have an ID Mate Summit and upgraded to the ID Mate Galaxy. The Galaxy is
great and easy to use. I like the fact that the Galaxy can be updated by

Follow up to a posting about accessible bluetooth kitchen scales

2018-05-13 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Towards the end of last year, I posted a sort of query/rant about Bluetooth
kitchen scales and how I was having no luck with the MY Weigh Vox talking
scales. No matter how careful I was, the vox scales would unfailingly crap
out on me only after a few months at the most. At the time of that post, the
two of my vox scales died within days apart of each other during the
Christmas holidays. Being stuck without an accessible scale was not fun.
That and they were already replacements of replacements of replacements… My
Weigh did swap them out for me and at least that time, they didn’t even
charge me the standard $25 fee. I just had to pay shipping for both of the
scales to Arizona. Came out to something like $10.

Anyway, the most recent Vox 3000 scale replacement I got towards the middle
of January and this time . . . it lasted all the way to mid-March…

In the meantime, I had been checking out some Bluetooth kitchen scales for
accessible alternatives as it seems that My Weigh really is the only
manufacturer that makes talking kitchen scales that can weigh to the gram.
And as it appears that I’m more or less Charlie Brown when it comes to vox
scales, I didn’t want to continue to play the swap out game for eternity.

I came across two Bluetooth options. The Perfect Bake 2.0 Smart Scale:
https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Recipe-Kitchen-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B019C4PU
OA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8

&qid=1526269584&sr=8-3&keywords=bluetooth+kitchen+scale&dpID=51EpnAj-ZTL&pre
ST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch for $20.00. as well as the Drop Scale - Connected
Kitchen Scale:
https://www.amazon.com/Drop-Scale-Connected-Step-Step/dp/B00TTY34KG/ref=sr_1
_1?ie=UTF8

&qid=1526268636&sr=8-1&keywords=drop+bluetooth+kitchen+scale&dpID=31UVszDTlQ
L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch which I got on sale for $56.00 from its
usual $80.00. As of this posting, it looks like the Drop Kitchen scale is
$70.00.

Both devices have iOS apps. The Perfect Bake Smart scale I ended up
returning as I found it to feel on the cheap side in regards to materials
(it felt very plasticky and flimsy) and the paring was kind of a hassle. I
don’t recall exactly the process, but I do remember not being able to figure
out the buttons (memory serves that there were four buttons) and ended up
calling my sighted wife to help me out. The app it was more or less
accessible with from what I was able to gather VoiceOver reading the
different areas, but again, the app and its layout just felt a little too
busy for me.

To be clear, both these scales and their associated apps have the main focus
on interactive recipes with a heavy visual element to them. You follow a
recipe and you can see on the display how virtual bowls and what have you
filling up and so on. This too added to the over all feel of the perfect
bake smart scale giving more of the impression of being a kid’s toy than
anything else. In the Perfect Bake Smart scale, there is an element where
you can put VO focus on and as the weight fluctuates, VO will announce the
changes, but it kind of gets lost with everything else on the screen. That
and for me at least with this model, I started to get all sorts of crazy
readings into the thousand of grams. I really didn’t play around with it
much to see if I could figure out or correct the weird readings since I knew
within a couple of days I wasn’t going to keep it so I just sent it back.

As far as the Drop Kitchen scale, it’s actual feel seemed more in line with
its higher price. It is small (maybe 7 inches in diameter) with a rubbery
surface where you would put whatever bowl or plate or any other container on
it. There is one simple button that slightly sticks out of the side of the
device and is almost like a little apostrophe or comma in a visual sense
that you press to pare with your phone or iPad. Paring with this scale was
super easy. The iOS app (Drop Recipes) is fully accessible and the first
time you launch it, you go through a couple of prompts including the paring
part which was done in a snap.

This scale like the Perfect Bake Smart scale is again, focused on recipes,
but what this scale has that I didn’t not come across in the Perfect Bake
Smart scale was a simple scale function. When you first set up the app and
device, the default screen is the whole busy recipe section and the
different steps and so on, but you can have the scale screen be your default
which is super clean and simple. You’ve got a menu button that says
hamburger button like a lot of other apps do, then there’s a heading that
just says Scale, after that is where the weight would be an

Hi
I might try and answer your question. You have set the work place as a
favourite, that part seems to be fine. Did you set up notifications for your
newly added favourite place as well? If you do that, you should receive
updates for your home and workplace as well. I have a few places set up like
that, where my son travels to on a regular basis, and I receive the forecasts
and notifications for those places. Hope this might solve your problem.

Hi all. I have a question. I live in Clifton Heights but work in Philadelphia.
When I gto Philadelphia for work, is there a way that I can get weather updates

my favorite places but when I'm at work I still get updates about my home area.
