RE: A Question About How to Reorder Apps on Apple Watch

2018-12-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Maria and thank you for your reply.

Yes, I encountered the same scenario as you described.

I suppose then, at present, there is not a way to rearrange the apps when in
list view, via VoiceOver.

Again, thank you for the feedback.

Re: Apple Music library and Alexa

2018-12-28 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Anthony,
Once you have your Alexa device connected with Apple Music, all you have to do
is tell her to play XYZ playlist or XYZ album or whatever from Apple Music. You
can go into the Alexa app on your iPhone and sent Apple Music as you are
favored provider. Again, I don’t remember how I did it. I read an article and
follow their instructions. It wasn’t hard. If you go into that app and get in
there I think you will figure it out. I’m sorry I just don’t have the memory
are used to have. It’s very annoying.

Cell Phone Repair, How to Repair a Cell Phone, Popular Mechanics

2018-12-28 Thread M. Taylor
Cell Phone Repair, How to Repair a Cell Phone, Popular Mechanics

How To Repair a Cracked Phone Screen, Popular Mechanics
We give you options, from a quick fix to professional grade.
By Kevin Dupzyk

Considering that phones these days are pretty much all screen, learning how
to fix a display can become pretty necessary, especially for the clumsy
among us.
Luckily, there is more than one way to fix a phone, ranging from passable to
perfect. Here they are, in ascending order of professionalism.

Option #1: Packing Tape
The name of the game here is, "hold out until I'm eligible for an upgrade."
If you want to keep using the cracked phone, and don't want to risk losing
glass or slicing up your fingers, cover the screen with a layer of packing
tape. Line everything up carefully and trim it with an X-acto knife and it
may look almost like a real screen protector.

Option #2: Screen Protector
The gussied-up version of the packing tape solution. This ensures that
you've got no seams and a clean line around the edges of the screen.
Granted, that might not be much of a concern when underneath there's a
spiderweb of cracks.

Option #3: Replace the Screen Yourself
It is possible to replace a phone screen on your own. We'll refer you to
iFixit for their excellent, step-by-step guide with photos. A few key things
to keep in mind here: Before you decide to go this route, look into the cost
of the replacement screen. Today's phone screens, which incorporate touch
interaction and possibly biometric sensors, don't come cheap.
Also look into the warranty situation. If you're the kind of person who is
willing to fix a phone yourself, you're probably not too worried about
maintaining your warranty-but it still can't hurt to know if you're going to
void it.
Finally, unless you're already accomplished at repairing modern solid-state
electronics, you probably lack the specialized tools you'll need for the
job. Luckily, iFixit sells a handy kit that includes pretty much everything
you'll need, with the possible exception of their iOpener, a tube you heat
up and apply to the phone to soften its adhesives.

Option #4: Call In a Professional
You can always just take your phone into the shop. If you're an iPhone
person, look for your local Apple Store here. Best Buy will work on iPhones
and Samsung phones. And finally, UBreakIFix has more than 400 locations
across the country.

RE: Some Questions for Apple Watch Owners

2018-12-28 Thread M. Taylor
Wow Jenny,

You use mail on your watch to stay up-to-date on a mailing list? You must be
an expert user of the watch.

Assuming that you hold your watch-arm near your sternum, does your arm not get
tired after a few minutes?

RE: Some Questions for Apple Watch Owners

2018-12-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Anna,

This is a great answer. The scenario you describe makes perfect sense. It
also makes sense that using one device can be more convenient than having to
use two.

Okay, I'll give the text message dictating feature a try.

I've heard of Pedometer ++ but this is the first I've heard of an app called
Activity ++.  I'll give it a look.

Thank you,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I love using my watch to answer texts if I'm in the middle of something, like
washing dishes. A message comes in, I read it, double-tap Dictate, speak my
reply, and choose Send. Then I keep doing what I'm doing until the next text
comes in. it's a smoother process than having to wipe my hands and take my
phone out every time. I do some text message dictating while out and about, and
usually it works fine. Sometimes I have to use the phone, though, if dictation
isn't working properly. In general, though, dealing with one piece of equipment
is easier than two. I rarely use the watch for email though.

I usually use a modular face. I like the app Activity++, which speaks my move
progress in terms of number of calories, number of stand hours, and exercise
minutes when I tap the complication.

I hope that's of some help.

Best,
Anna

Hey guys,

ap. The problem is, they are not showing up on the google home. I
ask google home what's the next event on my caldndar. I have plenty
of events in the next week, but only 1 event is showing up on the
home, or atleast that's what it's telling me. Trying to figure out
what i'm missing. Any ideas on setting to check in the google home

Thanks,

iPad and Text Expander Help

2018-12-28 Thread Emilio S. Hernandez
Hello everyone,

I am curious how others use Text Expander with the iPad?
I note that there are some bluetooth keyboard incompatibility issues, but I am
wondering is Text Expander not able to be used with a Slim Folio keyboard?
When I cycle through the different keyboards by pressing "F3," and place focus
on the Text Expander keyboard, I am not able to use this in messages for
example.
As another instance, I am composing this note with Drafts5 because of its Text
Expander integration.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Re: Apple Password Issue For A Friend In Pakistan

2018-12-28 Thread Richard Turner

have him wait a while, then reboot the phone by at least powering it off and
back on.
Then try again. It should let him try 2 or 3 more times.
But, Apple makes it very clear from the beginning that passwords are required
to have at least one capital letter.
It is a tedious process to reset a password so hopefully the reboot will work.

Re: Some Questions for Apple Watch Owners

2018-12-28 Thread Anna Dresner

Best,
Anna

RE: [EXTERNAL] Screen becomes unresponsive during phone calls

2018-12-28 Thread Richard Turner
Is it still a problem if it is more like 18 inches away?

It really sounds like the proximity sensor is being triggered for some reason.

Maybe take a dry, microfiber cloth and really scrub back and forth with it over
that area of the screen and see if that helps.

The phone is maybe ten or twelve inches from my face when this happens and I am
holding the phone by the edges so my finger is not covering the ear opening. I
have successfully entered numbers before, just not since this last update.

I've not had any problems, but I also never keep the phone near my face. Also,
make sure your hand isn't covering the top portion of the phone where the
status bar area is because that activates the sensor that puts the sound
through the little earpiece at the top of the screen.

Hi,

recently i have noticed that the screen on my iphone 7 becomes totally
unresponsive during phone calls. For example, when presented with a choice of
numbers to enter -- press 1 for this, press 2 for that -- I am unable to
detect the number pad or anything else on the screen. I'm told by a sighted
friend that the number pad is present, but voiceover is completely
unresponsive. When this happens, I cannot even double tap to end the call.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Is Itunes file sharing still available in the latest version of Itunes?
When I looked in the Voice dream reader user guide it spoke about
choosing Apps and selecting voice dream reader and then selecting the
file to be transferred.

I can't find any reference to apps in my current version of Itunes and I
vaguely remember some discussions on this list about apps being removed
from Itunes.

Any help welcome.

Hi all,

Any advice on the best way to transfer audio books etc onto an Iphone for
use with Voice Dream reader? I looked at SD card readers with Lightening
connectors but it looks as if these only work for photographs and not
files of other formats.

Any pointers to podcasts on doing the transfer would be useful.

Many thanks

Subject: Transferring files onto an Iphone for use with Voice Dream reader

Hi all,

Any advice on the best way to transfer audio books etc onto an Iphone for use
with Voice Dream reader? I looked at SD card readers with Lightening
connectors but it looks as if these only work for photographs and not files of
other formats.

Any pointers to podcasts on doing the transfer would be useful.

Many thanks

Gary

Hey Mary,

I’m glad to hear someone on my side of the fence for once. It seems that the
internet seems to hate Apple for the sake of hating Apple. The HomePod in my
eyes will never be what Amazon has made the Echo system. I am personally ok
with that too. It was created to be a home speaker system to listen to your
music, podcasts, and even news related topics. I love it for the simplicity.
Of course you can also check the weather, set timers, etc. It does all of
this just like the Echo system of speakers. The skills that are in the Echo
store are simply to cheesy for me to take seriously. The only skill I am
looking forward to is the MLB skill to tell Alexa to listen to the Atlanta
Braves this season. I think I might be able to accomplish this task with the
HomePod and the Siri short cut for the MLB @Bat app too. We will have to
wait and see.

I agree with you, Ed. I own a couple of echoes. Generally, I find that the

need or could use, outside of the weather and a little bit of news

That said, I do appreciate the echo for the easy access to SiriusXM and to
its ability for reading kindle or audible books while I exercise. I’m not
into the automated so-called smart home, so I have no comment on HomePod
or echo in that regard. But as a music listening sores, the HomePods kill
the echoes. They should, they are more expensive. I have a pair of
HomePods that I got when the price came down to $500 for the pair. They
sound almost as good as my wonderful floorstanding stereo speakers it
cost me over twice what I paid for the HomePods. I would never consider
any pair of echoes as any sort of real hi-fi system even for moderately
good audio quality listening.

I am not sure why everyone thinks the HomePod is so far behind on
“skills”. The HomePod is a far better device, Now with Siri short cuts
you can use third party apps to do things from the HomePod. I find the
Apple speaker much simpler to use than the Amazon Echo. You have to
remember very specific application names and commands to use the Echo’s 3
million fart applications. The skills on the Echo aren’t that impressive
to me. It’s next to impossible to set up using the app, you almost always
have to use the internet browser on a computer for full access to the
settings.

The home pod is behind both the Echo and Google home in many respects.
Even with general features, the home pod is really lacking, and I think
you can now play Apple music on the echo so there is little reason to
get a home pod. Hopefully Apple will catch up but they have a ways to
go.

Hello Everyone,

You know, one of the most popular request made to both Apple and Amazon
is

that they provide independent sound equalizer support for their
music/speaker devices.

When I purchased my first Echo device, a while ago, this feature was
not

available. The same was true for HomePod.

However, recently, this feature has now been added to the Echo
interface,
under audio from within the Settings area of the Alexa app. This is
very,

very nice.

However, Apple has not added this feature to HomePod. At least, if it
has,

I have not been abel to locate it in the HomePod interface.

And yes, I know there is a general sound equalizer, of sort, in the iOS
settings area of the music app but, hereto, Apple falls short as these
options are merely presets, not true customizable controls. Moreover,
one
should not have to adjust the sound levels for an entire operating
system in

order to customize the sound setting for one specific device that is
marketed as an entertainment listening device.

Besides, it's ridiculous to pay over $300 for a speaker and not have
the

ability to adjust its sound settings, independently.

I have owned my HomePod for over a year or so, I think, and have only
used

it 3 times because there is just too much bass, for my liking.

With the overwhelming success of Echo, you'd think that Apple would
realize

that, especially when it comes to hearing, as well as vision, one size
definitely does not fit all.

Just some venting, on my part.

Mark
