RE: How do I make the watch *not speak the time?

2019-01-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

I am totally blind and do at times turn the volume down extremely low although
rarely all the way. Having said that I have had it where it was so low that I
couldn't hear it at all because I was in a noisy place. In that case I just
press the digital crown or turn it up since I have "wake on crown up" enabled,
then I do a 2-finger double tap and drag my fingers up the screen and I don't
usually have any issues getting my volume to come up that way.

Hello Anna,

Yours is a very good suggestion.

However, were I totally blind, I'm not certain that I would be comfortable
doing this as I would have no definitive feedback as to when the watch was
awake or locked.

In fact, I experimented with this today and; as I expected, without audio/hap
tic feedback, I had no way of telling if the screen was on or off without
looking at the display. Now, 9 times out of 10, simply touching the display
will wake up the watch but, and I want to emphasize this, but, not always.
Sometimes, one much touch the display multiple times in order to wake up the
device.

I would think that, in certain scenarios, a totally blind person could get
thoroughly disoriented with the device under certain conditions without
audio/hap tic feedback.

Of course, one could use iOS to increase the volume on the watch, at any time.

Hi,

One thing you can do is turn the volume all the way down. To adjust the volume,
double-tap and hold with two fingers and slide them up or down.

Best,
Anna

RE: Notifications on number of steps

2019-01-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Tracy,

Well, the simple answer to your question is, "Yes."

You can definitely keep track of the number of steps you take on a treadmill.

In fact, I do this exact same thing.

Many people on the list have their favorite third-party apps for this purpose
but you can use the built-in pedometer that is located inside of the native
Workout app.

As for notifications? The watch can definitely give you feedback on when your
stated goals have been met for the day; exactly how this is configured, I have
not yet explored as I prefer to use a third-party app called Fit Port as my
primary pedometer.

Hi all, I'm trying to figure out different ways to keep track of what I do on
the treadmill. It's occurred to me, how about keeping track of the number of
steps I walk on it. Would this work? Via my watch? Could I get a notification
when I walk a certain amount of steps?

Thanks,

Re: Spectrum TV App

2019-01-02 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello, you are indeed correct that while watching live TV, you can switch to
the secondary audio channel.
I have not found a way to do this while watching a program from the DVR, nor
have I found any fast forward controls.
I’m using the latest Spectrum app on an iPhone with IOS 12.
There is a bit of a problem with the guide.
You can easily scroll through the guide for any given channel, then tap on
network schedule for that channel.
The programs are listed, but Voiceover does not announce the times of the day
that programs are airing. It just simply says Time,, the name of the program,
but then if you elect to record the program, the times are then announced
correctly.
I like the app pretty well, but there some definite improvements that could be
made.
Thanks.

Hello,

Looking at moving to Spectrum from Direct TV. Had a couple of questions
relating to the IPhone and IPad apps for Spectrum …

I know you can watch live TV with the app, and understand that you can also
switch the secondary audio…is this correct? Also, as far as watching recorded
stuff from your DVR, are you able to switch the audio there .. and are you able
to rewind and fast forward?

Thanks for any assistance …

In my purse, I stick a set of headphones with mike in a little set in an open

Notifications on number of steps

2019-01-02 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I'm trying to figure out different ways to keep track of what I do on
the treadmill. It's occurred to me, how about keeping track of the number of
steps I walk on it. Would this work? Via my watch? Could I get a notification
when I walk a certain amount of steps?

Thanks,
Traci

RE: iPhone XR

2019-01-02 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Yeah, I mean, if I’m going out or whatever, I just shove them into my pants
pocket, but here around the house, I generally try to keep them in an altoid
tin. It helps me to remember where I placed them and again, keeps the cat away
from them. I don’t place them in there all nice and neat either. More like cram
them in and close the lid. I don’t use the earpods that come with the phone. I
have a pair of Bose sports headphones that I prefer and others here and there.
ON my office desk. In an overnight bag, etc.

Earpods for whatever reason just don’t hold well in my ears.

Interesting, if I received a new iPhone or bought new Earpods which came in a
plastic case said case would never see the Earpods again after I removed them
the first time.

I find it way too much trouble to try and nicely put these things back in the
base, I use them way too much for that so they just get rolled up around my
hand and in my left front jeans pocket they go.

I tried lyft once but quit after they lied about a discount. I was suppose to
get a discount but never saw it activated. I was charged almost $8 for a ride
less than 2 miles.

Catching up on holiday emails so am a little late on this topic. The
one thing I'll say which has not been mentioned yet is it seems that
in Austin, Texas, where we have both, Uber Pool used to be a set price
no matter the distance. However, I have found that Uber Pool, their
carpool service, has been on a sliding scale, sometimes differing in
price from when I book a trip. Lyft, on the other hand, their Share
service, the price I see is the price I pay. A long time ago, Uber
Pool was like that but for whatever reason, things have changed in
that regard. Delivery fees for Uber Eats in my area have also gotten
to be set amounts which can range from $2.49 to $6.99, depending on
distance and wait time. So it seems that Uber is more expensive for me
and Lyft is winning out more often than not. I have both on my phone
but tend to use Lyft.

I do not know what setting you are looking at, but there is no sound setting

You set the sound in the timer and there is no option to have no sound.
Hence, my recommendation.

RE: WIFI-enabled Instant Pot app

Exactly, normally a device like that should easily work for 10 or 15 years.

I don’t' see why the Bluetooth model shouldn't give us years of reliable
service like any well made appliance. If anything, it's the iOS app that'll
likely give us trouble long before we have to deal with any issues with the
actual device. Looks like the smart cooker app hasn't been updated in forever,
but as long as it continues to work and do what it's supposed to do, then
that's perfectly fine with me.
Funny, a few days ago during a spurt of holiday cooking, my wife was using both
our instant pots. The 6 quart Bluetooth one that I use as well as an 8 quart
model she'll bust out if she wants to make something bigger or a larger batch
of whatever. Anyway, we were upstairs and she wanted to check on the status of
what she had in the bigger pot and flipped open her iPad to launch the app only
to remember that it was the standard model with no connectivity she wanted to
check on. She expressed her frustration in very colorful language with having
to go downstairs just to check the time left. Me being the loving husband that
I am, I went to the kitchen instead and did a little facetime session with her
to check.
She commented on how the Bluetooth one makes things super convenient and lets
you be lazy for little things like this.
I'd like to think that if enough people continue to express their frustration
and disappointment with the accessibility challenges pertaining to this new
wifi model, the instant pot folks may eventually get around to addressing it.
Just keep the pressure on and be noisy about it.

Well, I guess I will just have to pray that my Bluetooth model keep on keeping

Interesting, if I received a new iPhone or bought new Earpods which came in a
plastic case said case would never see the Earpods again after I removed them
the first time.
I find it way too much trouble to try and nicely put these things back in the
base, I use them way too much for that so they just get rolled up around my
hand and in my left front jeans pocket they go.

RE: Amazon Echo Definitely Better than Apple HomePod, in One Respect

2019-01-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, but at least for the Echo it is amazing how often it does listen when 2 or
3 people are talking and it thinks it heard "Alexa".
Not sure if you have an Echo device, but the theory here may sound better than
the reality. At my store I changed the wake word to "Echo" because one of my
employees is called "Alex" and more often than not the Echo started listening
if I picked up the Intercom in the office, dialed the extension of the phone by
the till and called out "Alex" or "Hey Alex" or if I started right out saying
"Alex can you check with Big Rock and find out if they have a left handed Ruger
in 300 Win" where Big Rock is one of our suppliers for firearms. Next thing I
hear the Echo saying "Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "Can you check with
Big Rock..." and it goes on to repeat exactly what I said which obviously means
it listened as soon as I said "Alex". Then again if I deliberately try by
saying something like "Alex what is the time" instead of "Alexa what is the
time" it doesn't react.
"Hey SIRI" is a much more distinctive wake word as is "OK Google" or "Cortana".
I wish Amazon would add some more optional and rare wake words or even better
they would figure out a way where you could record your own wake word.

The Echo and similar devices are always listening for their wake up phrase,
such as "Alexa" or "Hey Google". It's only after they hear this wake up phrase
that they start recording what you're saying and sending it off to their
servers to see if you're asking them a question.

Re: To Those Who Have Used both Uber and Lyft, A Question

2019-01-02 Thread Andy Baracco
I find the lyft app easier to use, but they do update and periodically
change the format. For example, with Uber you set your pick up point first,
while with lyft, you set up your destination first. This can be confusing
if you use both.

I have both on my phone
but tend to use Lyft.

of over $15, but that ranges for me, so Uber usually wins in terms of
discount.

The two apps feel almost identical to me. I will look at them both, to
see
which one has the cheapest rate before booking a ride. Having said this,
I
tend to prefer Lyft slightly more because they have a toll-free number
you

can call if your driver decides to discriminate against you.

Re: To Those Who Have Used both Uber and Lyft, A Question

2019-01-02 Thread Wayne Merritt

Spectrum TV App

2019-01-02 Thread pdllogan77
Hello,

Looking at moving to Spectrum from Direct TV. Had a couple of questions
relating to the IPhone and IPad apps for Spectrum .

I know you can watch live TV with the app, and understand that you can also
switch the secondary audio.is this correct? Also, as far as watching
recorded stuff from your DVR, are you able to switch the audio there .. and
are you able to rewind and fast forward?

Thanks for any assistance .

Recipesonthe WIFI-enabled App for Instant Pot

2019-01-02 Thread Sandra Finley
I have been playing around with the app to see if I can make some sense out of
it. So far, this is what I know.

If you get into an individual recipe, directly below the recipe title there are
five toggle buttons. If you double tap on the one VoiceOver calls Basket,
you get the ingredients. Back out of that screen with the usual Back button and
then double tap the one called Restaurant and you will find preparation
directions. I got this result consistently with about twenty recipes. (See
what happens when one cannot sleep?)

My husband is going to sit down with me in the next couple of days and help me
understand the visual labels. When he does, I will tack an explanation on to
Terrie's excellent road map of the buttons and send it out. (We would have
done this sooner but let's just say lately we have been overcome by the events
associated with having a large family.) Meanwhile, HTH

Re: making a timer on iOS 12 vibrate only?

2019-01-02 Thread Richard Turner

Adam,
If you have the sounds set to vibrate on ring, and make a custom ringtone that
is silent, and set that as your timer sound, it will work.
But, there is no option for vibrate only with the timer.
Sounds like a good suggestion for Apple as someone who is deaf or hard of
hearing could certainly find this useful. Not to mention those who do not want
to disturb someone around them.

Hi,

One thing you can do is turn the volume all the way down. To adjust the volume,
double-tap and hold with two fingers and slide them up or down.
