RE: turning on VoiceOver on someone else's ipad

2019-01-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Maria,

If the iPad was set up by a sighted person without Voiceover it is highly
unlikely that the accessibility shortcut is configured hence triple clicking
the home button will not work. Asking SIRI will work as long as the iPad has an
active internet connection either via WiFi or if it is a cellular model with an
active data plan.

RE: turning on VoiceOver on someone else's ipad

2019-01-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
A triple click of the iPad’s home button will turn Voiceover on, but only if
this has been setup in Accessibility settings.
This is really no different than on the iPhone except that if you initially
triple pressed the home button to start Voiceover to set up your iPhone with
speech after you pulled it out of the box this would have been set up for you.

If the iPad was set up without Voiceover, which is likely, somebody would have
to go to Settings > General > Accessibility and then find the very last button
on the screen which is called “Accessibility Shortcut”.
If it says “Accessibility Shortcut, Voiceover” then it’s already set up, if not
it is a simple thing to tap on that button and tap on Voiceover to select it.
Of course if the iPad is on WiFi or if it is a cellular model with a working
SIM card you can simply press and hold the home button for a moment and tell
SIRI “Turn on Voiceover”.
Once Voiceover comes on you can go to Accessibility Settings and check it
yourself.

Sieghard

Re: What do I do to delete phone calls, incoming and outgoing?

2019-01-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You might have already gotten the answer to this, but use the roter
action, namely place two fingers on the screen and rotate them like
you're twisting a knob, until you hear action. This should be the
default, but occasionally it isn't. Once you hear action, you can flick
up or down to get to options like delete. Once you find the option you
want, just double tap.

Carolyn has an iPhone which makes sense since she posted her question to the
Viphone list.
While your method works great if you want to completely clear Recent Calls,
there are many times when somebody may want to keep certain numbers in there
and only delete selected calls.
My guess is that Carolyn somehow had the rotor turned away from "Actions"
because if it is set to Actions a swipe down will select Delete and another swipe down
(or a swipe up when you first start) will put you on More which is needed if, for
example, you want to add a number from the recent call list to your Contacts.

Hi Carolyn,

I am sorry to say it, but it must be user-error, there has been no change to
how you delete messages. I suspect somehow this is connected to your Recent
Call issue and that your rotor is simply not set to Actions. When you are in
the Messages app and in the main list of text messages, go to one you want to
delete. Now turn the rotor either left or right and make sure you do so until
you hear "Actions", now flick down with one finger and you will hear Voiceover
say "Delete", double tap on this and you will be prompted to confirm whether
you want to delete the message.
Also, make sure your phone's screen is clean, a dirty screen can do funny
things to gestures.
Do you have your phone locked to portrait mode? If not I would advise you to do
so, touch the status bar like the time, then swipe up with 3 fingers for the
control centre, swipe right until you hear "Lock rotation" and if it says
"Off", double tap on that to turn It on.
If you are in your messages app and you don't hold the phone upright so the
rotation changes to landscape then a swipe down which is what you would do to
switch the rotor to "Actions" would simply become a swipe right in landscape
mode and take you to the next message.

Regards,
Sieghard

Strange Braille Screen Input Issue

2019-01-31 Thread kelby carlson
I use Braille screen input on my phone to type pretty much everything. Recently
I've run into a very strange issue with it. Sometimes when I am typing a word,
and swipe right for a space, VO has a significant delay in responding with the
completed word I typed. It doesn't happen every time but it is pretty frequent.
I've tried turning VO on and off and rebooting my phone, neither of which
worked. Anybody seen this problem before?

RE: Deleting messages and also Favorite entries.

2019-01-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Braille input problem in Mail app

2019-01-31 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Thanks, Richard!boddly, your instructions worked a treat on my iPad iOS 12.2
beta, but when I tried on my iPhone iOS 12.1.3 that did not work and in the
process of adjusting the settings on the iPhone, the Orbit Reader became
utterly unresponsive: the iPhone declared. It was connected, but no keyboard
input was recognised! I tried forget this device, restarting, rebooting,
nothing worked - and then somehow, the orbit started being recognised again.
Shudder! I think I’ll use it with my iPad instead if I cannot sort the iPhone!
Thanks again.

This is just a wild guess, but it may be possible that you inadvertently
issued some command from your Orbit Reader that changed your Braille
input. I did that once a long time ago and it caused me all kinds of
trouble when trying to do things like log into my banking app. For that
reason I switched to eight-dot Computer Braille and left it that way. Go
to Settings > General > Accessibility > Voiceover > Braille. Check to see
what Braille Input is set to; perhaps you accidentally switched it to
eight-dot Computer Braille. If you did, switch it back to either
uncontracted or contracted six-dot, whichever you prefer. Just a thought:
let us know what happens. Oh, and if anybody knows what command you use to
switch Braille input on the fly, please post it here so that I can make a
 note of it.
 Thanks,

Re: Aware mode

2019-01-31 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

I can use Face ID with this feature on, but it works way more consistently when
it's off, particularly if I'm in bright light, such as being outside on a sunny
day. So I have it turned off most of the time. If I were in a situation where I
was more concerned than usual about security, I would turn it on, though, since
if it's on, you have to be looking directly at the phone to unlock it.

How well it works depends on how well you can simulate looking at the phone. If
you have some vision, I would think having it on would make sense. If not, your
eye condition may affect how well it works.

By the way, the feature is turned off automatically if you set up Face ID with
VoiceOver running. You can turn it on at any time, though.

Best,
Ana

It is in the settings for Face Id. When you use this you look directly at the
screen and it give the phone the ability to use your eyes to identify you
faster. I tried Face ID with and without Aware and found it works more

RE: Aware mode

2019-01-31 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

Could someone tell me where aware mode is and what it does? I sometimes use
face ID, but it’s hit and miss, and I often have to just enter my pass code.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Hello list,

I was wondering if anyone else uses the aware bore on facial identification? I
use it and most times I have no problem with unlocking my phone.

Star just was wondering if anyone else has this feature on and their success
rate.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Re: Braille input problem in Mail app

2019-01-31 Thread Richard Turner
Hello again,
You need you braille settings on the iPhone to be on contracted, not 6 dot. At
least, that is my setting and I'm not having the issue.
PS. Apple's accessibility is 1-877-204-3930. Brian had it as 3039 at the end.

DirecTV Now app

2019-01-31 Thread Peter Logan
Has anyone gotten this to work very well on an Apple TV? I tried it out a
couple of years ago but never kept it. Trying it out again and it looks like
channel numbers and network logos are all graphical anymore. Basically not
readible in the guide. Also, you can choose english descriptive as your
language, but nothing seems described...

The app for the phone is better, but still has some issues...

Just curious what others have found, and if they have come up with a work
around.

Carolyn, there is an edit button at the top of your Favorites list. Double tap

Re: Braille input problem in Mail app

2019-01-31 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Could anyone who uses a Braille keyboard let me know if they have problems
getting capital letters or numbers when replying to an email in the Mail app
using iOS 12.1.3 or the beta of iOS 12.2? I’ve just borrowed a BraillePen Slim
and it has the same problem as the Orbit Reader - and only when replying to
emails in the Mail app. That is on both iPhone XS iOS 12.1,3 and on iPad 2018
iOS 12.2 beta. So perhaps it is an iOS bug after all?
Thanks

Does the iPhone 10x and 10R have the raise to wake feature? Like on my iPhone
6s plus I can raise my iPhone up and VO announces the time without opening the
phone.

I was going to give the same answer. I have an XR, but same deal. A quick press
of the power button on the side.
That said, I prefer to use a tactile means of checking the time to not bug my
wife if I just want to know what time it is.
In the past, I've repurposed a cheap analog clock you can buy from any Walmart
or Target or whatever by popping out the front plastic face and marking it up
like any braille watch. This works well enough, but often these things are so
cheaply made, the clock hands eventually fall off regardless of how careful you
may be when checking the time.
I recently grabbed myself a Bradley Element tactile watch and now use this to
check the time in the middle of the night. These aren't cheap watches, but I
wanted a watch that wasn't a smartwatch anyway and now it doubles as a
nightstand clock for me too.
I believe Apple watches have the ability to check the time via vibration
patterns. I'm not interested in an Apple watch so haven't really followed these
types of threads so don't recall if it's a built in function of the watch or
perhaps through a third party app.
I've tried more standard fair braille watches from the typical blindness
related stores and have found them to generally be poorly made and with not so
attractive designs. They usually break within six months for me.
I'm not aware of any sort of app that can give the time in a vibrating/muted
pattern, but it would be helpful to have something like this on the phone and
not just the watch.

Hi Holly,

I don’t have an iPhone X, but when I want to get the time on my iPhone 8+, I
hit the power button. My phone is usually locked in if I hit the power button,
that gives me the time. If the iPhone X has the same power button on the side,
I would think that would work. Certainly, those who have an iPhone X will
comment on this for you. Good luck.

Hello list,

I was wondering if anyone else uses the aware bore on facial identification? I
use it and most times I have no problem with unlocking my phone.

Star just was wondering if anyone else has this feature on and their success

Thanks in advance.

Re: Braille input problem in Mail app

2019-01-31 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Thanks, Brian!
You are right: when the Orbit refuses to recognise the command for capitals or
numbers, I can reach over to use the on-screen keyboard on my iPhone XS, which
does suggest it is an Orbit firmware bug.
I’ll get Orbit onto it!

Harry

RE: What do I do to delete phone calls, incoming and outgoing?

2019-01-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Carolyn has an iPhone which makes sense since she posted her question to the
Viphone list.
While your method works great if you want to completely clear Recent Calls,
there are many times when somebody may want to keep certain numbers in there
and only delete selected calls.
My guess is that Carolyn somehow had the rotor turned away from "Actions"
because if it is set to Actions a swipe down will select Delete and another
swipe down (or a swipe up when you first start) will put you on More which is
needed if, for example, you want to add a number from the recent call list to
your Contacts.

Dear Carolyn & List:

Is your cell phone an IPhone or an Android?

If it is an IPhone and you want to clear your call log, open phone, select
recents, then the edit button near top of call log, swipe up to the clear
button, double-tap it then double-tap the delete all calls button. Instantly
the CALL LOG IS CLEARED.

If your phone is Android, I trust someone here will be able to explain how to
delete the calls.

I cannot delete recent calls - have closed out Phone, even locked and unlocked
screen, cannot delete calls. Any way I swipe just gets me to another call. I
tried to rotor.
Nothing is working.

Thanks for any help.
