Battery Level Alarms

2019-06-20 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone
Can anyone on this list tell me if there is a way to set audible alarms to
alert someone to high and low battery levels?

I ask this in deference to an earlier thread and web page article advising that
batteries should not be left to charge to 100% and really ought not be allowed
to drain to 0. It would be nice if, for instance, there were provisions in the
Battery settings dialog to set audible alarms when the battery level rises to a
pre-determined level (Oh, I don’t know - maybe say 80%) and another alarm
setting that would warn of a low threshold (maybe 20%). This would certainly
help me know when to put the phone on a charge and when I might want to remove
it from charging.

Just a thought!

On the Phones for the Blind list, Judy Jones posted about a new Android
phone coming out in July that sounds really blind friendly with Android Pie.
It costs $649, which, for what all her post described, I can understand why.
I am satisfied with my iPhone, it does what and when I need, but it's a big
world, and there are some that would like the phone. Also, it has a slider
qwerty keyboard, so that one wouldn't have to press 2 three times for c and
so forth.

Its another logitech. I think its a 600 something. What I heard about it,
I liked the description that I was told about it. Any kind of bluetooth
wireless keyboard I'm not going to get at the moment anyway. My phone isn't
working that well. I'm just going to use my phone to make and receive
calls. My phone can't connect to our wireless network at the moment for
some reason even though I know what our password should be. If it wasn't
for an important phone call I get each month, I probably wouldn't have
gotten an iPhone in the first place after my flip phone died. I would have
gotten another flip phone. Although it is getting harder and harder to get
those kinds of phones. I'm going to get my plan downgraded to the least
amount of data I can which is 500 megs. As long as I can make and receive
calls and send and receive text messages, I'm good.

You should consider the Logitech K480. It is easy to pair. Big and
heavy compared to the 780. Has no dongle. Also has no numeric keypad
if you want one of those. But if you don't need a numeric keypad it
is only about $22 and can be used on 3 devices. I use mine with the
iPhone, iPad Pro, and Apple TV.

Hi to all. I just tried out my new wireless/ bluetooth keyboard and
it doesn't work at all. I turned on the switch and I plugged in my
USB dongle.
I got nothing at all. I then unplugged my dongle and tried to pair
it to my iPhone via bluetooth, and nothing again. I bought this
keyboard to help me with typing on my iPhone. I'm going to talk to
apple because I think my phone is broken. I went into settings and
tried to get my phone to where I don't have to keep typing in my
passcode everytime my phone locks itself and even though I typed in
my passcode and changed the setting to off, it didn't take.
If it weren't for the fact that I need a phone to make and receive
calls, I'd sell it for whatever money I could get. The only good
thing about my phone is the quality of phone calls. I like that very
much.

How do you get Siri to play your voice mail. I did not know you could do that.
By the way I have had the same gripe about not being able to hear voice mail
and getting it on the speaker.

This is one of my few pet-peeves about the iPhone.

There is a speaker button on the screen once you start the voice mail playing,
but it is a little tricky to find and double tap on it so you miss the first
part of the voice mail.

I either use siri to play the voice Mail and put the phone right up against my
ear to hear it, or make sure I have earphones on before playing the voice mail.

Perhaps this will be finally fixed in iOS 13.

Hi Joshua. Sounds like you could do with one on one training, if you can get it.

If you really don't want an iPhone, and want something very basic, which has
speech, and easy to use. Then see if you can get hold of the capsis mini vision.

In the UK, it retails for about 300 pounds.

Please don't get this mixed up, with the capsis smart vision phones, as they
are more advanced.

Dave.

If you are 100% or maybe I should say 200% certain you enter the WiFi password
correctly including upper and lower case characters there is no reason why you
r iPhone should not connect. You could reboot the router which often solves any
issues like that, but while I know this has been a bit of a tough transition, I
assume the iPhone which I think you said is brand-new, probably works perfectly
and your main problem is that you are still climbing this somewhat steep
learning curve which is preventing you to get the most out of your new iPhone.
As for the keyboard, the only Logitech model I could find with 600 in the model
number is the K600 TV keyboard and it is specifically designed to be used
together with smart TV's.
It has a touchpad and what is called a D-Pad, on Logitech's website it says
"Everything you need to navigate your Smart TV or PC connected to the TV.
Search, select, and control your content with the familiar typing experience,
fluid gestures of the touchpad, or the point-by-point precision of the D-Pad."
If that is indeed the model you had in mind I'd seriously reconsider, I doubt
the touchpad and whatever this D-Pad is are useable for a blind person, the
pairing process is identical to any other Logitech keyboard, i.e. press and
hold one of the easy switch keys, wait until it shows up in your list of
Bluetooth devices on the phone, tap it and enter the pairing code on the
keyboard. On this keyboard you afterwards also need to tell the keyboard that
you use iOS otherwise some of the keys won't work and it's all around not meant
to be a phone keyboard. It's still a bit over 14 inches wide and 4.6 inches
deep and weights a pound, yes, lighter than the K780, but if you want a smaller
Bluetooth keyboard without numeric pad then the K480 which many others
recommended would be much better and less expensive.

RE: will be sending back my Logitech keyboard

2019-06-20 Thread Carolyn Arnold
On the Phones for the Blind list, Judy Jones posted about a new Android phone
coming out in July that sounds really blind friendly with Android Pie. It costs
$649, which, for what all her post described, I can understand why. I am
satisfied with my iPhone, it does what and when I need, but it's a big world,
and there are some that would like the phone. Also, it has a slider qwerty
keyboard, so that one wouldn't have to press 2 three times for c and so forth.

Best regards,

Carolyn

Its another logitech. I think its a 600 something. What I heard about it, I
liked the description that I was told about it. Any kind of bluetooth wireless
keyboard I'm not going to get at the moment anyway. My phone isn't working
that well. I'm just going to use my phone to make and receive calls. My phone
can't connect to our wireless network at the moment for some reason even though
I know what our password should be. If it wasn't for an important phone call I
get each month, I probably wouldn't have gotten an iPhone in the first place
after my flip phone died. I would have gotten another flip phone. Although it
is getting harder and harder to get those kinds of phones. I'm going to get my
plan downgraded to the least amount of data I can which is 500 megs. As long
as I can make and receive calls and send and receive text messages, I'm good.

I don’t think it was bashing, others including myself were simply stating our
experience with how helpless almost all sighted people are when it comes to
using a phone where Voiceover is turned on.

I have yet to come across a single sighted person who uses Voiceover and you
can’t use screen curtain unless Voiceover is running since that is a feature
which exists only if Voiceover is on, you can’t turn on screen curtain as a
stand-alone accessibility feature.

Sieghard and all,

Ok once again, I will only reply to this Screen curtain issue one more time.
I’ve seen many sighted people including my family, as well as my friends using
the screen curtain, matter of fact, I even seen my Niece’s school teacher using
it. please don’t ask me why, but the fact remains, I see this quite often.
I’ve even been on a public bus, and seen a bus driver using it, and the reason
I know this is because they either tell me they like this screen curtain if
they know me, or I hear Voiceover saying screen curtain on or off. Maybe some
sighted people use that feature for privacy as that is the reason I use the
screen curtain feature. Who knows, but it doesn’t matter to me if a sighted
person wants to use an accessibility feature. Although, I have noticed most of
them who use the screen curtain, is when either they turn their phone off, or
like this school teacher, she uses Siri to set the timer, and she turns on the
screen curtain, maybe she doesn’t want the kids to see her phone screen. They
might not even realize they are using an accessibility feature, so if they want
to, so be it!

So some blind people say sighted people don’t know anything about
accessibility, and I say I do know some sighted people do know about it. We
all are certainly entitled to our own opinions.

Please let’s not turn this in to bashing.

I could ask the opposite, what makes you think all, most or even some sighted
people know about the screen curtain?

I am completely blind but as part of operating a retail store in a small town
where the only other few visually impaired or blind people are some elderly
folks who have lost their sight I deal exclusively with sighted people and that
includes going to buying shows where I often pass my phone to a sales rep to
show him a picture or ask him/her to take a picture of a product to show to my
employees. I rarely have come across anybody who can even take a picture when
Voiceover is on because sighted people don’t know you have to double tap a
button when Voiceover is active, they tap the Take Picture button a few times
until I tell them that doesn’t work. I don’t often turn on the screen curtain,
but when I do and forget I usually get the comment “Hmm, your phone is off” or
“your screen doesn’t work”.

I guaranty that if you went to a mall and did a random survey of 500 sighted
people where you handed them an iPhone with Voiceover and the screen curtain on
and asked them the simple question whether they can tell you the time which is
displayed on the phone that none of them could. You might of course get lucky
and somebody may have a blind friend or family member who may have told them
about the screen curtain feature which does not exist for sighted people and is
completely a foreign concept for them.

RE: Sighted people and Voiceover Screen Curtain (was: how do I unsub from this list)

2019-06-20 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Indeed. It more sounds like if sighted people are telling you that they’re
using screen curtain, they’re most likely messing with you.

There’s no real conceivable reason why a sighted person would use this specific
accessibility related feature for the blind as opposed to say another general
accessibility one that may lend itself to a more mainstream application.
Regularly encountering its usage by sighted folks in the wild also sounds
charitably speaking … implausible.

This is one of my few pet-peeves about the iPhone.
There is a speaker button on the screen once you start the voice mail playing,
but it is a little tricky to find and double tap on it so you miss the first
part of the voice mail.
I either use siri to play the voice Mail and put the phone right up against my

Perhaps this will be finally fixed in iOS 13.

Food scale

2019-06-20 Thread pdllogan77
Does anyone know of a food scale that will connect to the IPhone and give
readings on the phone? Just wondering as I need to replace a scale, and was
thinking if available I'd go the smart route.

Do you have any specific recommendations? What apps do they connect to? How

RE: Sighted people and Voiceover Screen Curtain (was: how do I unsub from this list)

2019-06-20 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Sieghard and Janet,

I am not bashing anyone on this subject. I just find it hard to believe all
those sighted people are using screen curtain as they would have to have VO on
to use it. I am like Sieghard, how would they use it with VO on as I have not
ran into any sighted person who could use VO. Are you sure they are using
screen curtain and not just locking their iPhone to have the screen black.

RE: have a quick question about listening to voice mails

This is one of my few pet-peeves about the iPhone.

There is a speaker button on the screen once you start the voice mail playing,
but it is a little tricky to find and double tap on it so you miss the first
part of the voice mail.

I either use siri to play the voice Mail and put the phone right up against my
ear to hear it, or make sure I have earphones on before playing the voice mail.

Perhaps this will be finally fixed in iOS 13.

Anyone happen to have been able to download the documentary “36

Here is a link to the features of the app, including the Siri shortcuts.

I paid $5.99 for it and it works great!

You need to go into settings, then advanced settings and there you will find
the shortcuts.

Re: will be sending back my Logitech keyboard

2019-06-20 Thread Evan Reese
What I would ask is, is he absolutely sure that he isn't on his wi-fi
network already.
That may sound like a strange question, but I had a frustrating experience
with my iPad Mini a few days ago. I installed an OS update and after that,
it told me that I needed to enter my wi-fi password. Apparently it forgot
it. So I entered it and my iPad Mini told me that it was incorrect. So I
entered it again, several more times in fact and each time it told me that
it was incorrect.
I was really sure that, even if I had made a typo or two, I had definitely
entered the correct password during one of my attempts, so I held down the
Home button and Siri came up. I was on the wi-fi network already.

Anybody else had this experience by the way?

If you are 100% or maybe I should say 200% certain you enter the WiFi
password correctly including upper and lower case characters there is no
reason why you r iPhone should not connect. You could reboot the router
which often solves any issues like that, but while I know this has been a
bit of a tough transition, I assume the iPhone which I think you said is
brand-new, probably works perfectly and your main problem is that you are
still climbing this somewhat steep learning curve which is preventing you to
get the most out of your new iPhone.
As for the keyboard, the only Logitech model I could find with 600 in the
model number is the K600 TV keyboard and it is specifically designed to be
used together with smart TV's.
It has a touchpad and what is called a D-Pad, on Logitech's website it says
"Everything you need to navigate your Smart TV or PC connected to the TV.
Search, select, and control your content with the familiar typing
experience, fluid gestures of the touchpad, or the point-by-point precision
of the D-Pad."
If that is indeed the model you had in mind I'd seriously reconsider, I
doubt the touchpad and whatever this D-Pad is are useable for a blind
person, the pairing process is identical to any other Logitech keyboard,
i.e. press and hold one of the easy switch keys, wait until it shows up in
your list of Bluetooth devices on the phone, tap it and enter the pairing
code on the keyboard. On this keyboard you afterwards also need to tell the
keyboard that you use iOS otherwise some of the keys won't work and it's all
around not meant to be a phone keyboard. It's still a bit over 14 inches
wide and 4.6 inches deep and weights a pound, yes, lighter than the K780,
but if you want a smaller Bluetooth keyboard without numeric pad then the
K480 which many others recommended would be much better and less expensive.

First, what kind of content is in the zip files?
Second, are you exporting from Dropbox, or adding from Voice Dream Reader?
My experience is that it is easier to setup Dropbox as a content source in VDR,
and add from it like you would with Bookshare.

Hi Joshua. Sounds like you could do with one on one training, if you can get
it.

If you really don't want an iPhone, and want something very basic, which has
speech, and easy to use. Then see if you can get hold of the capsis mini
vision.

In the UK, it retails for about 300 pounds.

Please don't get this mixed up, with the capsis smart vision phones, as they
are more advanced.

You should consider the Logitech K480. It is easy to pair. Big and
heavy compared to the 780. Has no dongle. Also has no numeric keypad
if you want one of those. But if you don't need a numeric keypad it is
only about $22 and can be used on 3 devices. I use mine with the
iPhone, iPad Pro, and Apple TV.

Hi to all. I just tried out my new wireless/ bluetooth keyboard and
it doesn't work at all. I turned on the switch and I plugged in my USB
dongle.
I got nothing at all. I then unplugged my dongle and tried to pair
it to my iPhone via bluetooth, and nothing again. I bought this
keyboard to help me with typing on my iPhone. I'm going to talk to
apple because I think my phone is broken. I went into settings and
tried to get my phone to where I don't have to keep typing in my
passcode everytime my phone locks itself and even though I typed in my
passcode and changed the setting to off, it didn't take.
If it weren't for the fact that I need a phone to make and receive
calls, I'd sell it for whatever money I could get. The only good
thing about my phone is the quality of phone calls. I like that very
much.

RE: will be sending back my Logitech keyboard

2019-06-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

RE: hashtag tips

2019-06-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You already answered the question in a way by saying “it’s 9 characters
shorter”. A web search for “Why does #A11Y represent accessibility” gave me
this:
a11y, the abbreviation stands for accessibility, with the "11" in the middle
representing the 11 missing letters of the word.
So yes, it’s 9 characters shorter because you replace 11 characters with 2.
Similar abbreviations used are i18n for internationalization (a 20-character
word and you replace the 18 middle characters with the number 18) and l10n for
localization (a 12-character word where the middle 10 are replaced by the
number 10).
It's used by lots of people in the accessibility community, so a search for
'a11y' finds useful and relevant content.

Got it now, M4O? 😁

Christopher,

LOL, good point. But why specifically #A11Y ? I mean, it could be anything,
then why? That's what I can't understand.

Question about whatsapp

2019-06-20 Thread 'evergreenwoods' via VIPhone
Hello,

I’m trying to learn how to use whatsapp. When I open it instead of seeing some
contacts or message, I find backup whatsapp history, daily, weekly, month or
off.

Do I need to back up the history? I only want to see the contacts that called
me.

I tapped on off, but the screen continues the same.

Any help, please?

Rena
