Hi, it’s a stand alone documentary, but she is going to release it on her
parallel podcast feed. Not sure of the url off the top of my head. but if you
search for parallel podcast in your pod catcher of choice that should get you
there. It’s not there yet, but will be soon.

some reason even though I know what our password should be. If it wasn't
for an important phone call I get each month, I probably wouldn't have
gotten an iPhone in the first place after my flip phone died. I would have
gotten another flip phone. Although it is getting harder and harder to get
those kinds of phones. I'm going to get my plan downgraded to the least
amount of data I can which is 500 megs. As long as I can make and receive
calls and send and receive text messages, I'm good.

You should consider the Logitech K480. It is easy to pair. Big and
heavy compared to the 780. Has no dongle. Also has no numeric keypad
if you want one of those. But if you don't need a numeric keypad it
is only about $22 and can be used on 3 devices. I use mine with the
iPhone, iPad Pro, and Apple TV.

RE: Food scale

2019-06-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is one called the Drop Kitchen scale, Cristobal has one and seems to like
it.
I like smart stuff but this is one item where I am not so sure how well it
would work and especially how responsive it is in terms of automatic read outs.
I bake a lot the European way which means ingredients get weight instead of
adding them by cup or table spoon, tea spoon etc. If I need 500 grams of flour
I usually use a cup measurement to put it in the bowl which is on the scale, I
have one of the MyWeigh talking scales. After I put on a bunch I wait for a
couple of seconds and the scale tells me the weight, then I can add a bit more
etc. I would have to know for sure that with something like the Drop Kitchen
scale or any other which may exist I could have the app open and Voiceover
focused on the right area and I would get virtually instant and automatic read
outs, I would not want to have to touch the phone.
I think Cristobal and others said that the MyWeigh talking scales keep breaking
on them, I had my first one for at least 15 and maybe as long as 20 years, it
then didn’t work any more and I contacted MyWeigh and they send me a new one
for just a relatively small shipping fee of I think $20 or $25 Canadian. I
definitely call this good customer service and doubt that Drop provides such a
long warranty (I didn’t even have my original receipt or record of purchase any
more).
I have now had that new model for about 2 years and it’s been working
flawlessly.

Best regards,

2019-06-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Low vision users may, but give e 1 single reason why a sighted person would
turn on Voiceover and then turn on the screen curtain, at that point they are
putting themselves on the same level as a blind person with respect to using
their phone, they can’t see the screen and would have to rely entirely on
Voiceover to double tap on things, they couldn’t swipe to answer a call and if
they wanted to type something they couldn’t just tap away at lightning speed as
many especially younger sighted people who grew up with touchscreens can do.
This would almost be like a sighted person putting on a blindfold and walking
around with a white cane, there simply is no reason for it.

I don’t think it was bashing, others including myself were simply stating our
experience with how helpless almost all sighted people are when it comes to
using a phone where Voiceover is turned on.
I have yet to come across a single sighted person who uses Voiceover and you
can’t use screen curtain unless Voiceover is running since that is a feature
which exists only if Voiceover is on, you can’t turn on screen curtain as a

Sieghard and all,
Ok once again, I will only reply to this Screen curtain issue one more time.
I’ve seen many sighted people including my family, as well as my friends using
the screen curtain, matter of fact, I even seen my Niece’s school teacher using
it. please don’t ask me why, but the fact remains, I see this quite often.
I’ve even been on a public bus, and seen a bus driver using it, and the reason
I know this is because they either tell me they like this screen curtain if
they know me, or I hear Voiceover saying screen curtain on or off. Maybe some
sighted people use that feature for privacy as that is the reason I use the
screen curtain feature. Who knows, but it doesn’t matter to me if a sighted
person wants to use an accessibility feature. Although, I have noticed most of
them who use the screen curtain, is when either they turn their phone off, or
like this school teacher, she uses Siri to set the timer, and she turns on the
screen curtain, maybe she doesn’t want the kids to see her phone screen. They
might not even realize they are using an accessibility feature, so if they want
to, so be it!
So some blind people say sighted people don’t know anything about
accessibility, and I say I do know some sighted people do know about it. We
all are certainly entitled to our own opinions.
Please let’s not turn this in to bashing.

What I would ask is, is he absolutely sure that he isn't on his wi-fi network

That may sound like a strange question, but I had a frustrating experience with
my iPad Mini a few days ago. I installed an OS update and after that, it told
me that I needed to enter my wi-fi password. Apparently it forgot it. So I
entered it and my iPad Mini told me that it was incorrect. So I entered it

I was really sure that, even if I had made a typo or two, I had definitely
entered the correct password during one of my attempts, so I held down the Home

Anybody else had this experience by the way?

If you are 100% or maybe I should say 200% certain you enter the WiFi password
correctly including upper and lower case characters there is no reason why you
r iPhone should not connect. You could reboot the router which often solves any
issues like that, but while I know this has been a bit of a tough transition, I
assume the iPhone which I think you said is brand-new, probably works perfectly
and your main problem is that you are still climbing this somewhat steep
learning curve which is preventing you to get the most out of your new iPhone.
As for the keyboard, the only Logitech model I could find with 600 in the model
number is the K600 TV keyboard and it is specifically designed to be used
together with smart TV's.
It has a touchpad and what is called a D-Pad, on Logitech's website it says
"Everything you need to navigate your Smart TV or PC connected to the TV.
Search, select, and control your content with the familiar typing experience,
fluid gestures of the touchpad, or the point-by-point precision of the D-Pad."
If that is indeed the model you had in mind I'd seriously reconsider, I doubt
the touchpad and whatever this D-Pad is are useable for a blind person, the
pairing process is identical to any other Logitech keyboard, i.e. press and
hold one of the easy switch keys, wait until it shows up in your list of
Bluetooth devices on the phone, tap it and enter the pairing code on the
keyboard. On this keyboard you afterwards also need to tell the keyboard that
you use iOS otherwise some of the keys won't work and it's all around not meant
to be a phone keyboard. It's still a bit over 14 inches wide and 4.6 inches
deep and weights a pound, yes, lighter than the K780, but if you want a smaller
Bluetooth keyboard without numeric pad then the
K480 which many others recommended would be much better and less expensive.

I have heard of a Siri Shortcut that will alert you when the battery

On the Phones for the Blind list, Judy Jones posted about a new Android
phone coming out in July that sounds really blind friendly with Android Pie.
It costs $649, which, for what all her post described, I can understand why.
I am satisfied with my iPhone, it does what and when I need, but it's a big
world, and there are some that would like the phone. Also, it has a slider
qwerty keyboard, so that one wouldn't have to press 2 three times for c and
so forth.

Its another logitech. I think its a 600 something. What I heard about it,
I liked the description that I was told about it. Any kind of bluetooth
wireless keyboard I'm not going to get at the moment anyway. My phone isn't
working that well. I'm just going to use my phone to make and receive
calls. My phone can't connect to our wireless network at the moment for
some reason even though I know what our password should be.

I don’t think it was bashing, others including myself were simply
stating our experience with how helpless almost all sighted people are when it
comes to using a phone where Voiceover is turned on.

I have yet to come across a single sighted person who uses Voiceover
and you can’t use screen curtain unless Voiceover is running since that is a
feature which exists only if Voiceover is on, you can’t turn on screen curtain
as a stand-alone accessibility feature.

Sieghard and all,

Ok once again, I will only reply to this Screen curtain issue one more
time. I’ve seen many sighted people including my family, as well as my friends
using the screen curtain, matter of fact, I even seen my Niece’s school teacher
using it. please don’t ask me why, but the fact remains, I see this quite
often. I’ve even been on a public bus, and seen a bus driver using it, and the
reason I know this is because they either tell me they like this screen curtain
if they know me, or I hear Voiceover saying screen curtain on or off. Maybe
some sighted people use that feature for privacy as that is the reason I use
the screen curtain feature. Who knows, but it doesn’t matter to me if a
sighted person wants to use an accessibility feature. Although, I have noticed
most of them who use the screen curtain, is when either they turn their phone
off, or like this school teacher, she uses Siri to set the timer, and she turns
on the screen curtain, maybe she doesn’t want the kids to see her phone screen.
They might not even realize they are using an accessibility feature, so if
they want to, so be it!

So some blind people say sighted people don’t know anything about
accessibility, and I say I do know some sighted people do know about it. We
all are certainly entitled to our own opinions.

Please let’s not turn this in to bashing.

Hi,

If you don't want any personal information in the greeting, just select the
" Default Greeting" and you're done.

Are you sure it wanted your WiFi password and not your Apple Id password?
It's easy enough to see if you are connected to WiFi, just touch the middle

What I would ask is, is he absolutely sure that he isn't on his wi-fi
network already.
That may sound like a strange question, but I had a frustrating experience
with my iPad Mini a few days ago. I installed an OS update and after that,
it told me that I needed to enter my wi-fi password. Apparently it forgot
it. So I entered it and my iPad Mini told me that it was incorrect. So I
entered it again, several more times in fact and each time it told me that
it was incorrect.
I was really sure that, even if I had made a typo or two, I had definitely
entered the correct password during one of my attempts, so I held down the
Home button and Siri came up. I was on the wi-fi network already.

Anybody else had this experience by the way?

If you are 100% or maybe I should say 200% certain you enter the WiFi
password correctly including upper and lower case characters there is no
reason why you r iPhone should not connect. You could reboot the router
which often solves any issues like that, but while I know this has been a
bit of a tough transition, I assume the iPhone which I think you said is
brand-new, probably works perfectly and your main problem is that you are
still climbing this somewhat steep learning curve which is preventing you to
get the most out of your new iPhone.
As for the keyboard, the only Logitech model I could find with 600 in the
model number is the K600 TV keyboard and it is specifically designed to be
used together with smart TV's.
It has a touchpad and what is called a D-Pad, on Logitech's website it says
"Everything you need to navigate your Smart TV or PC connected to the TV.
Search, select, and control your content with the familiar typing
experience, fluid gestures of the touchpad, or the point-by-point precision
of the D-Pad."
If that is indeed the model you had in mind I'd seriously reconsider, I
doubt the touchpad and whatever this D-Pad is are useable for a blind
person, the pairing process is identical to any other Logitech keyboard,
i.e. press and hold one of the easy switch keys, wait until it shows up in
your list of Bluetooth devices on the phone, tap it and enter the pairing
code on the keyboard. On this keyboard you afterwards also need to tell the
keyboard that you use iOS otherwise some of the keys won't work and it's all
around not meant to be a phone keyboard. It's still a bit over 14 inches
wide and 4.6 inches deep and weights a pound, yes, lighter than the K780,
but if you want a smaller Bluetooth keyboard without numeric pad then the

K480 which many others recommended would be much better and less expensive.

I did use the headphone, because you said to, Jenn. It could be that before,
not using it, was the reason I could not make it work, not sure. Strange how
that would make the difference.

Things are getting so much worse now with ID and all that this is what I put:

Hellow. If you know me, leave a message; if you don't, hang up. Goodbye, and

I doubt anyone will appreciate that one other than my teenage granddaughters.

Does Anyone Know How to Delete a Tune-In Favorite?

2019-06-21 Thread Evan Reese
Hey Guys,
I added a custom stream to my Tune-In Favorites a couple years ago, but that
station went off the air last year. I can’t seem to figure out how to delete
it. It seems like there should be an easy way, but I’m just missing it.
Could someone tell me how to delete a Tune-In Favorite?
Thanks very much.

Re: Does Anyone Know How to Delete a Tune-In Favorite?

2019-06-21 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello Evan,

If you are wanting to delete or remove it from your favorites, just double tap
on the station, then on the play screen, you will find a favorites button that
is currently selected. Just double tap the favorites button to unselect it and
remove it from your favorites.

Hope this helps.

Re: Food scale

2019-06-21 Thread Richard Turner

There is one called the Smart Chef, Smart Food scale that I reviewed on
Applevis.com.
It has lots of Siri shortcuts so you can use it mostly hands free for weighing
items.
It is quite responsive, but only the Talking Scale function is really
accessible right now.
I have worked with them on the accessibility, as has others. They are very
responsive to feedback. I cannot remember how many updates have been done since
I first inquired about this scale a few months ago; but it is a lot.
The app is called:
Smart Chef Smart Food Scale by ReFleX Wireless Inc.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/smart-chef-smart-food-scale/id995829381
I believe it costs around $50. It is the Pocket model, which is about 3.5 or 4
inches square and fairly thin.

definitely call this good customer service and doubt that Drop provides such a
long warranty (I didn’t even have my original receipt or record of purchase any
more).
I have now had that new model for about 2 years and it’s been working
flawlessly.

Re: Does Anyone Know How to Delete a Tune-In Favorite?

2019-06-21 Thread Evan Reese
Hi Chris,
Unfortunately, that method doesn’t work because the station went off the air.
So when I double tap it, I get an error message saying:
Error
We’re sorry. An error occurred with this stream. Please try again later.
Then an OK button below that.
That’s all that’s on the screen. All I can do is hit the OK button and go back
to my list of Favorites. I wonder if they neglected to think of a way to delete
a Favorite that no longer works. Seems unlikely but it’s possible I suppose.
Thanks for trying though.
Any other ideas?

Hello Evan,

If you are wanting to delete or remove it from your favorites, just double tap
on the station, then on the play screen, you will find a favorites button that
is currently selected. Just double tap the favorites button to unselect it and
remove it from your favorites.

Hope this helps.

Re: Ten Year Anniversary of Accessible iPhone

2019-06-21 Thread Wayne Merritt
I'm not sure how I feel about getting a discount from Apple just for
using Voiceover. Yes, it would be nice to knock a little off the
price. However, by using VoiceOver or other accessibility tools, we
are able to use the same devices the general public can use. But, with
the discount, it seems as though we are saying, "No, we're special, we
need this discount to set ourselves apart from the rest." Doesn't that
go against the grain of the empowerment and message of equal access?
Perhaps I'm reading this wrong.

Hi Chris,
I never thought of that. I have never logged into that site, just used the
Tune-In app on my iPad Mini.
I’ll try it out and see what happens and let you know.

  Hello Evan,

If you are wanting to delete or remove it from your favorites, just double
tap on the station, then on the play screen, you will find a favorites button
that is currently selected. Just double tap the favorites button to unselect
it and remove it from your favorites.

  Hope this helps.

Re: Does Anyone Know How to Delete a Tune-In Favorite?

2019-06-21 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello Evan,

I just logged in on my computer using the Google Chrome browser and found how
to remove a favorite.

When you first go to the site, you will have to arrow down the page to find
where it says sign in. It is not a link or button, but if you just hit enter
on it, it will bring up the sign in page where you can sign in.
Also, at the top of the page, right before it says search, you will find a
slash link. This is a navigation menu link, and if you hit enter on it, it
will bring up a list of navigation links at the top of the page.

Once you get to your favorites page. after each favorite, you will find a
button that says zero. If you hit enter on this button, you will get some
choices that pop up, one of these choices is remove. Just hit enter on remove,
and this should remove the station from your favorites.

Hope this has been helpful. Let me know if you have questions.

Chris

Re: Alarm on Iphone question

2019-06-21 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. This got my brain going, of how to turn the alarm off on
the iPhone X series. I found the following page on AppleVis which says
to use the Home gesture on the iPhone X to turn the alarm off. The
link is below:
https://www.applevis.com/blog/ios-iphone-opinion/alarmingly-accessible
I don't have an iPhone X series yet but am planning on the upgrade in
September, to either the XR or whatever the new thing is. Good
question.

Regards,
Wayne

Tunein radio

2019-06-21 Thread 'Bud Kennedy' via VIPhone
Ever since I have installed Tunein Radio today, I can not get my phone to speak
the screen unless my earphone is plugged in. Thinking that I would like to use
Tunein Radio, I set it up to charge me after my seven day free trial. How do I
unsubscribe from the service. The last time I did this years ago, I thought
you unsubscribed by going into “settings/tunein radio” and unsubscribing. It
seemed as though just deleting the app didn’t stop me from getting charged.
Please let me know what I am missing. Thanks in advance.

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-21 Thread Richard Turner

if you have automatic updates on, it will eventually update I guess. The screen
isn't that different.
Other than the export options after scanning, and the setting to use VoiceOver
to read rather than it defaulting to its own reading, which for me, was
Samantha, which I prefer not to use.

Can’t get the voice update to download.

I should be seeing the fix that uses blue tooth hearing aids instead of
speaker, and can’t find the option to use Voice over as the single reader.

Went to the app store and clicked on the updates, but nothing has changed.

When you say ‘if you have automatic updates enabled’, do you mean Apple updates?

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-21 Thread Richard Turner

Holly,
Open the Voice App, then double tap on settings, if you have an option to turn
off text to speech, you have the latest version.
Turning that off, allows VoiceOver to do the reading.
Also, at the bottom of the settings screen is the version number, which should
be 4.1.
I don't know why you are not seeing the update, but if you delete the app and
redownload it, you should end up with the latest version.

2019-06-21 Thread Richard Turner

Yes, I've used it quite a lot and since the update, it has improved in its
reliability. Plus, his renaming the Take a picture button with simply, Camera.
What is the issue with the hearing aids?
You may also want to let him know through the feedback under the app's settings.

Thanks Richard:

The thing with the hearing aids. When I open the app, the sound switches from
my blue tooth hearing aids back to the phone speaker. I thought I saw a
mention of a fix for that in the update improvements.

Also, I no longer hear the tone to let me know I am at a good point to take the

either.

I haven’t had the time to really give it a good test, so will do so tomorrow.

I will send feedback when I test it more.

What can be causing this?

I'm not sure how I feel about getting a discount from Apple just for using
Voiceover. Yes, it would be nice to knock a little off the price. However, by
using VoiceOver or other accessibility tools, we are able to use the same
devices the general public can use. But, with the discount, it seems as though
we are saying, "No, we're special, we need this discount to set ourselves apart
from the rest." Doesn't that go against the grain of the empowerment and
message of equal access?
Perhaps I'm reading this wrong.

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-21 Thread Julie Dawson
What setting do you adjust to make the tones work? Somehow I don't get tones.
It just makes a camera noise when I say "read" and gives feedback.
Thank you so much. I find the app very helpful and impressive.

Yes, I've used it quite a lot and since the update, it has improved in its

Re: Phone Gets Very Warm

2019-06-21 Thread 'Ming' via VIPhone
 hi!.
I think it has some possible reason to cause this issue.
1. maybe the wifi/ 3g/ 4g connection is not good. and it need some resources to
search the network.
3. it may have some of the apps using lots fo ram on your phone or CPU as well.
3. maybe it is the GPS need more network resources as well.

I think you should try to restart your phone and see it can help a little bit
or not!

Re: Phone Gets Very Warm

The onboard diagnostic for the battery indicates that there is no problem
with the battery. I did notice that somehow the brightness had gotten
turned up to 100%. I think this happened when my sighted wife was checking
something on my phone, as I usually keep it at zero. Also, I noticed that
Whatsapp was using 52% of my battery, far more than any other app.

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-21 Thread Richard Turner

In Voice Dream Scanner, double tap on menu, then settings, and look for the
tones toggle and make sure it is on.
You no longer need edge detection on since the tone is telling you how much
text is in view.
So, the louder the tone the more information it sees.
Hold it steady when the tone is loudest and if you have auto capture on, it
will take the picture automatically.
HTH,
Richard

I am not aware of tones in this app.
Voice Dream Scanner uses tones, but Voice OCR uses the phrase, Four Corners
Detected.

Yes, I've used it quite a lot and since the update, it has improved in its
reliability. Plus, his renaming the Take a picture button with simply, Camera.
What is the issue with the hearing aids?
You may also want to let him know through the feedback under the app's settings.
Later,
Richard

RE: Phone Gets Very Warm

2019-06-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When my iPhone does this from time to time I close all apps, turn it off for 5
or 10 minutes and then turn it back on, that usually fixes the issue.

I think you should try to restart your phone and see it can help a little bit
or not!

I have an iPhone 8 that I have had for about 18 months.

Over the last couple of weeks I am noticing that the phone gets very warm as

even when using Whatsapp messenger.

What can be causing this?

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-21 Thread Julie Dawson
I have tried and I still get no tone at all. I am using an SE which I wouldn't
think would make a difference. Am I to use it with headphones and not through
the speaker? Also when the selected voice starts reading, is there a way to
stop voice-over from speaking as well?
Thank you.
