Hi
List,

I noticed a couple
of Amazon Music app version updates back that the volume coming out of my iPhone
8 speakers was significantly reduced whenever launching Amazon Music. The volume
is reduced almost to the point where my iPhone is unusable and is across the
board until I force close Amazon Music using the App Switcher. Turning the
volume up doesn't correct the problem. When I plug in my wired earpods, the
volume coming through them is fine in Amazon Music but reverts to being too low
when I unplug the earpods. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I plan to
write Amazon about this but wanted to first see if others are also experiencing
this.

Thanks in
advance.

It seems that if you have the microphone enabled so that you can use Alexa to
request a song that the speech level is very low. I disabled the microphone but
then wasn’t able to use Alexa.

RE: Resetting an iPhone 7+

2020-01-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Max,

Generally speaking, I think you get a better result when you restore a device
from the computer backup.

Again, this is just my opinion but I can tell you that, while I have certainly
restored devices from an iCloud backup, to get a truly fresh copy of the OS on
the phone, restoring from a computer would be the way to go.

Were I you, I would probably perform a clean install on the iPhone, first,
setting it up as a new device. This insures that you remove any disk
fragmentation and/or corrupted file / file tables.

Next, I would use the restore feature, from the computer, to quickly install
app and/or app settings.

I strongly recommend that you make both an iCloud backup and a computer backup
before you refresh the phone.

Again, this is just my opinion.

Don't be afraid to use Google in order to assist you in this process.

Mark

I would like to reset the phone and do a restore. Should I restore from iCloud

Thanks as always for any advice.

RE: 01 Spanish Basics Lesson 1 Duolingo

2020-01-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Let's keep this thread on point, okay?

I haven't tried using DuoLingo in over a year or so but when I last used the
app, I was confronted with photos, only, also. Now again, this was quite some
time ago so I will download the app and see what happens; with any luck, I will
be able to use the swiping gesture to select from the list of possible choices.

What I would really like is an app that would allow me to explore the grammar
of the foreign language as well as the vocabulary.

I'm hoping that DuoLingo will work with my Braille display so I can at least be
certain of how a foreign language word is spelled.

If I recall correctly, I attempted to use DuoLingo, last year, to explore
Japanese. My Braille display was useless as Duo did not use Romanji (Roman)
characters for the Japanese words.

Spanish, however, should work well on the Braille display, I hope.

Another option that seems to work well with my Braille display is the Kindle
app for iOS. This is to say, when I downloaded a Japanese language learning
book, I was able to explore the Japanese words on my Braille display because,
along with the Chinese characters, the book also used Roman characters for each
word.

Penny,

The accents are a bit eisier now to understand and write then
they were when I was in high school in the 702s. Back then, for
example, the accents were: for a, it was the of sign. e was the
the sign. i was the still sign. o was theing sign. And u was
the with sign. Now, you just put a dot 4 before the regular
letter that is accented. So a would just be a dot 4 and then the
a. This is how the Spanish books are now that they have recently
been revised bz Hadley. For my own notes, I used the old way,
just because that is how I was trained, and I am used to it.
That is why Spanish is always grade 1 braille, because of the
accents. I have seen Italian in contracted grade 2 braille. So
I do not know what they do for accents. I would like to learn
Italian. Funny thing, I am full Italian, yet no of my name shows
it, and I do not know any. My taste buds like the food, though.
My father's mother changed his last name when she remarried. My
mother's maiden name is Ciccone. It ended with an i, but when my
grandfather got here off of the Adriata ship, the customs officer
changed his first name to Joseph, and he removed the i from his
last name and put an e on his passport. He never knew it,
because he knew no English. I tease my family, because Madonna
has the same last name as my mother. I tell them that she is a
great relative relation to us. I do not know how to spell the
Italian name for Joseph. I know how to say it, but I do not know
how to spell it. My father's father had the same name. Joseph
is my brother's middle name. My mother's mother's name is my
sister's confirmation name. My father's real last name was
Caravelo. Too bad I could not get a discount to change back
since it was his last name. It is too expensive to change your
name legally.

Love with every stop out,

Chanah

ISO a good and comprehensive flashcards app for iPhone

2020-01-19 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Hello list,

So, as the subject line states, I’m in search of a good and comprehensive
flashcards app. My favorite one FlashCards++ appears to have finally gotten
too buggy for me to use. It looks like it was abandoned a few years ago, but
up till now, I was still able to use it with no issues. Alas, iOS 13 has
claimed another old app victim.

I’ve tried the Flashcards Deluxe and Quizlet apps in the past, but I always
ended up going back to FlashCards++. I know there are a bunch of reviews
online for best flashcards apps, but it gets tedious downloading and trying
only to find it’s not the best as far as VoiceOver goes.

Can anyone recommend any flashcard apps they’re using that is pretty
comprehensive and works well with VO? Paid is fine as well.

Cristóbal

RE: 01 Spanish Basics Lesson 1 Duolingo

2020-01-19 Thread 'jan howells' via VIPhone
Penny, if you want to learn Spanish, I have all of my books from
Hadley. I will share them with you. I will help you with the
pronunciation. Somewhere, if I can find it, I also have the
books on usb drive that they send, so you can hear the
pronunciation as you read along with the braille. The usb is
exactly the same book being read for pronunciation. If you just
want the usb, or if you just want the braille, or both, I can
help you. Since you know braille already, that is a plus for
you. If you take Spanish 1 ed then decide on Spanish 2, you can
also get them from Hadley. Then, you can keep your materials.
There is no charge.

Bless you,

Chanah

Re: 01 Spanish Basics Lesson 1 Duolingo

2020-01-19 Thread 'jan howells' via VIPhone

Chanah

I can't tell you except that I just went to Settings and Duo Lingo and see some
things that need to be turned on there, like microphone and speech recognition.
Check that out.
If that is not the problem you and Kelby are having, maybe Regina has a fix for
you both.
I downloaded the App recently but can't tell what version it is.

I think I downloaded the correct app, but the first thing it asks me
to do is to choose one out of four pictures. This obviously will not
work for me!

I need an auditory language app, not one that asks me to choose which
is the correct picture of a cat...

What am I doint wrong?
Thanks.

Re: 01 Spanish Basics Lesson 1 Duolingo

2020-01-19 Thread regina alvarado
Penny, I have been using Duolingo for at least 2 years now. I use it as a free
app, though you need to go past some ads to keep it free. Not sure what things
you get extra for subscribing or how much it is. I didn't think the description
of what they gave you to subscribe was worth whatever the subscription was
since I can do what I want to as a free app. The app can be a bit flaky at
times, but if you are patient with it the content and lessons are extremely
good. If you miss a lot in a lesson you will continue to give you the same
material until you master it. Like any learning app you get things for doing
the lesson such as a streak of days, hearts to do lessons, and crowns for each
series of lessons you do. You can open these things to explore what they can
buy. I currently have 272 days learning Spanish. There are also Spanish stories
you can listen to to get familiar with listening to Spanish. They also give you
credit. You will need to do two lessons in a day to get experience you have to
have 20 points per day. Stories that you read give you all the experience you
need for the day. I hope this helps a little. You just have to get into the app
and explore. Sometimes it helps if you turn off the writing part of it and just
pick your sentences from the words that show up in a list. I found this much
easier, though you still have to write sometimes. I would put Spanish in your
browser and go to the keyboard that way. It has all the accents. As I said I
hope this helps some. If you have any other questions right on the list and
I’ll try to help.

Re: Language Learning Apps

2020-01-19 Thread Kelby Carlson
I don't think you get what I'm describing, so I'll try again. The app speaks
just fine. At the first lesson, the beginning question is "which one of these
is water?" with a list of words that can be clicked. I have been told by
someone I show the app to that each word has a picture beside it and you must
chose the word associated with the correct picture. I assure you this is the
Duolingo app and I have confirmed with multiple sighted people that this is how
it works.

Ihave a better suggestion. Go to YouTube and Plug in Duo Lingo Spanish Lesson 1

same as what is on the App. He does it in English and you will hear what the
App says in both English and Spanish. In my next post I will send the link to

Duo Lingo is good and systematic in it's approach. If you don't get a
perfect score on a given lesson, it will hammer you to death with the same
questions over and over again. The problem for me is that I can't figure
out how to keep going through lessons and I think it has something to do
with the Tabs. The tabs are labeled Crowns, Course, Street, and Hearts
Hearts has gems in it, and they are like points you need to use to start
new lessons. If you select that Tab that seems to be the only place to
continue lessons from and voice over says that. Problem is that if you
quit a lesson it brings you back to a starting page with a list of all
kinds of interesting topics but you can't look at them.
With the heart tab selected, it shows you how many gems hearts you have
and you need to hit on anumber like 1 which it shows you, and then you
continue on where you left off, even though it seems like I am still
annoyingly close to the first lessons.

>
With the Hearts tab selected There is a short list of things that voice
over reads. The last item in that list says free trial. Who knows what
that is for? I ssume it is to purchase some other version of Duo Lingo.

RE: Language Learning Apps

2020-01-19 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
There may be pictures but on my App there is a list of things to choose from. I
swipe to the right to go down line by line and see what the choices are. They
are words and you choose the one that is the word in Spanish for water. I
probably just double tap on the correct answer and it is selected. Then I swipe
down some more to "check" to see if I am right. That is how most of it works.

Maybe there are some settings you need to turn on. Sorry you aren't
getting any useful feedback. I don't remember having to do anything for voice
over to read me what was there.
The program is fairly intuitive cause there isn't a lot to read on a
single screen. After you answer what questions are there, it says check and you
hit on that and I even get a positive sound and vo says you are correct. If you
are not correct, it says something different.
Good luck trying to get it to work. I have other issues with the App
which causes me to quit it for awhile then go back and see if I can figure out
how to continue with the lessons.

Playing folders in Dropbox

2020-01-19 Thread Duane Steele
Hello iPhone Listers,

Someone on this list recommended CloudBeats for playing folders in Dropbox. I
downloaded it, and I'm able to use it sort of. But there are things I don't
understand, and I can't consistently find the controls that allow you to turn
shuffle on and off. Contact with the developer, especially regarding using the
help file led to a brief statement that the help file isn't accessible with
VoiceOver. Now, despite its limited use, I'm wishing I hadn't purchased
CloudBeats. Does anyone have instructions in text format for using this APp,
or a better recommendation for an APP to play continuous files in Dropbox?
Thanks.

Peace & Blessings,
Pastor Duane L. Steele

Anyone else having volume issues with Amazon Music app?

2020-01-19 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I noticed a couple of Amazon Music app version updates back that the volume
coming out of my iPhone 8 speakers was significantly reduced whenever
launching Amazon Music. The volume is reduced almost to the point where my
iPhone is unusable and is across the board until I force close Amazon Music
using the App Switcher. Turning the volume up doesn't correct the problem.
When I plug in my wired earpods, the volume coming through them is fine in
Amazon Music but reverts to being too low when I unplug the earpods. Is
anyone else experiencing this issue? I plan to write Amazon about this but
wanted to first see if others are also experiencing this.

Thanks in advance.

Alan Lemly

It sounds like you may be confusing Duolingo with Rosetastone.
When I've played around with Duolingo, I've had to type, and speak and select a
sequence of words, but don't recall picture based stuff. Not saying that there
aren't images, but I do know that Rosetastone is pretty much all images.

Re: Language Learning Apps

2020-01-19 Thread Bill Outman
I have Duo Lingo but haven’t explored it yet, so any help doing so would be
appreciated. I am delving into Spanish which I know some of and even a little
French.
Another trick I have used is via the You Version Bible app. I am able to
switch not only among English Bible versions but also versions in other
languages. You do this by activating the version button while in a chapter of
Scripture. You can then search through languages and versions and select one to
view, and you will be taken to that same chapter in the new versionthough this
might not work if you were reading in the Apocrypha in one version and the
other version doesn’t have that.
You will have a list of recently used versions you can switch among after you
have done this. They are available for down load for off line use, though I’ve
been content so far just to read within the app.
Hope this is some enlightenment to you on this Sunday.
