Re: Supersense, initial impressions

2020-12-09 Thread Ryan Mann
I downloaded Super Sense yesterday and I am pretty impressed with it. One
thing I noticed is that it tells me the wrong amount on dollar bills some
times. I had a one dollar bill and I was told it was a two dollar bill. I
have enough vision to be able to tell that I is a one dollar bill if I put it
close enough to my eyes. Also, I emailed you privately about speaking on Tech
Time. Did you get the emails?

I'm very happy to hear that, Chris. Please let me know if there is
anything else I can do to improve the Supersense experience for you.
I'm making notes of everyone's suggestions, and hope to have a new
setting and implementation of column handling in the next month or
two.
The reason for the delay is that we are working on a simultaneous
project which I will reach out to the list about next week. ;)

Try jut touching one finger to the screen in the top right hand corner,
It's away from anything important and should just stop things

These are two different commands, and depending on what you want, you may wish
to use one command or the other. The three finger double tap turns off
VoiceOver speech. VoiceOver won't speak anything at all again until you toggle
speech back on with another three finger double tap. The two finger single tap
just stops VoiceOver from what it's speaking at the moment. It'll start
speaking again as soon as any event on your phone sends more text to the text
to speech engine.

Richard:

Sometimes I will hear VO start announcing the minutes of a phone call. When I
do a two finger single tap, it will stop speaking for the duration of my call.

I don't know about changing screens.

When I am reading an article and want VO to stop for some reason, I can do the
tap and it will stop, then I can start it again with the same double finger
single tap.

Depending on the page, if you double tap it, you may hear adjustable.
If that works, flick up at that spot.
If not, you may find it lower down on the page where there is a combo box of
sorts, where it may say, 1 of 53, or whatever.
Touch there and start flicking up.
If you are in a state early in the alphabet it ain’t too bad; now if you are in

Well, the three finger double tap will stop speech, but VO will announce
'speech off', where as, the two finger single tap will stop speech
immediately, and is much more efficient in my view, but, as you say, each to

RE: Using dictation with iMessages and e-mail?

2020-12-09 Thread Jim Fettgather
Here is a thought.

If you wish to create a new paragraph, you should say New Line.

I promise.

You may want to check on this.

Verify if the settings under accessibility then spoken content then
pronunciation. In there check to see if there’s any word that is a substitution
for The word paragraph

for example, if I created in pronunciation a word Let’s say “hello” and
substitute that word to dodo , voiceover is going to read the word paragraph
any time it sees the word “hello” Just a thought.

RE: Silencing VO during calls

2020-12-09 Thread Richard Turner
Right, Holly, the two finger tap does silence VO, especially if you had done
the two finger flick down then it acts like a pause button and if you don't do
anything else with the screen, once you touch again with two fingers it
continues reading where you stopped it.
I just would not count on it working all the time to mute VO during a call,
that is what the 3 finger double tap does so nothing will speak and interrupt
your call.
But, each function has its place and everyone uses VoiceOver differently based
on preference, etc.
Neither one is wrong or right.

When I am reading an article and want VO to stop for some reason, I can do the

pronunciation. In there check to see if there’s any word that is a substitution
for The word paragraph
for example, if I created in pronunciation a word Let’s say “hello” and
substitute that word to dodo , voiceover is going to read the word paragraph
any time it sees the word “hello” Just a thought.

Holly, no, a two finger double tap starts or stops an action like answering the

Re: Silencing VO during calls

2020-12-09 Thread Richard Turner
I'm not sure about the screen dimming issue, but there are a couple ways to
keep VO quiet during a call. The easiest is to do a three finger double tap to
mute speech. You may want to turn off the always read notifications but that
would mean it won't automatically read them at other times.

Silencing VO during calls

2020-12-09 Thread Marty Hutchings
Many times lately when I answer a call, VO will then start reading my
recent notifications. Is there a way to get VO to stay quiet during a
call? Also, how do I get my screen from going dim during a call? I am
running IOS 14.2 on an iPhone 8. Thanks.

RE: Using dictation with iMessages and e-mail?

2020-12-09 Thread Richard Turner
What is the punctuation setting on the phone that is reporting paragraph when
there isn't the word?

If they are using line breaks, as in "new line" if punctuation is on all, maybe
it is determining that is a paragraph?
That is a pure guess on my part.
Otherwise, I'd say stop feeding the gremlins, grin.

I can’t confirm that but have heard it more than once.

The iPhone 12 Mini has Face Id as all iPhones have since the iphone X, XR, 11,
11Pro/Pro Max and all the 12/12 Pro phones.
Having said this, it really depends on what phone you have now, I really thing
anybody who has an iPhone XR and later is wasting their money upgrading, the
12-series phones will be remembered similarly to the iPhone 5C, 7 and iPhone X,
definitely updates, but not updates worthwhile unless you pay big bucks to be
on one of these programs where you can get the latest each year.
Yes, the 12 Mini is relatively small and it packs the latest chip, 5G and so
on, but considering that most likely next year's phones will have betrter 5G
modems, possible feature both Touch Id and Face Id and so on makes me want to
wait for sure.

Hi all. I’m interested to hear from anyone who has purchased an Iphone mini. I
love the idea of a smaller phone. I’m interested to know about battery life and
generally want to learn more about the pros and cons. Someone mentioned that
you can’t lock or unlock the mini if you don’t have a passcode or face ID. Is
that true? In general, just putting out feelers. Not quite ready to take the
plunge but giving it serious consideration. Thanks in advance.

Hi Jen, I would love to have this conversation with you. But you've posted to a
non-Echo related list not unless they allow these conversations over here. I
think it would be great if you wanted to reach out off list.

Re: Which echo Dot is the best

2020-12-09 Thread Dave Clement
Hello,

I think that "best" depends on what you want from an Echo Dot. Music quality?
Speech quality? Price? Size?

There are 4 Echo Dots now I believe, the 1st gen, 2nd gen, and 3rd gen Dots and
the newest one just released this fall. They all can do the same functions but
with different levels of sound quality. The newest one, shaped like a baseball
instead of a hockey puck and selling for near $100, produces the best quality
sound. The 3rd gen is next best. However, if you are wanting a high end sound
system sound, the Dot Echos are not the way to go. Some of the other Echo
speakers are better for that. I find my Dot 3rd gen gives good enough quality
for my listening preferences.

Of the 4 models, Amazon is likely only selling the 3rd gen and the new one.
They often go on sale or are included with other purchase bundles from Amazon.

As for my uses, there are many. Here are a few:
- asking the date, time, weather, or news
- asking for spelling and definitions of words
- setting timers and alarms
- setting reminders for events
- playing music on request
- asking for facts and details on almost anything
- asking "how to do" type questions
- playing games like "20 questions" and many more
- running some of the over 100,000 skills that are available

These are just a sample of the things you can do with Alexa and the Echo line
of speakers. I like the Dot because they are small and can fit almost anywhere.

Using dictation with iMessages and e-mail?

2020-12-09 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
When I receive e-mails or iMessages from my friend where he has used dictation
often the word paragraph is inserted into the body of the message without his
having said the word. Has anyone experienced this and if so have you managed
to resolve it?

I’m talking about dictation and not items sent with Siri.

Depending on the page, if you double tap it, you may hear adjustable.

If that works, flick up at that spot.

If not, you may find it lower down on the page where there is a combo box of
sorts, where it may say, 1 of 53, or whatever.

Touch there and start flicking up.

If you are in a state early in the alphabet it ain’t too bad; now if you are in
Washington, have fun!

Re: Supersense, initial impressions

2020-12-09 Thread Shane Lowe
I'm very happy to hear that, Chris. Please let me know if there is
anything else I can do to improve the Supersense experience for you.
I'm making notes of everyone's suggestions, and hope to have a new
setting and implementation of column handling in the next month or
two.
The reason for the delay is that we are working on a simultaneous
project which I will reach out to the list about next week. ;)

Editing in Recorder HQ

2020-12-09 Thread Karen Poulakos
Has anyone edited their recordings with this ap? All I want to do is trim a
couple of seconds off the beginning and the end of the recording.

If someone could give me some step by step instructions as to how to do
this, I would really appreciate it.

I tried setting the start position to zero, and want to set the end position
at 3 seconds, to get rid of that part. However I couldn't figure out how to
set the end position.

Question: Do I want to set the start position for what I want to keep, or
for what I want to delete?

If anyone knows of an extremely simple editing app that works on a pc rather
than the phone, that might be even easier.

Thanks.

Hello,
You don’t have to do anything. The keyboard will be in English if your iDevice
is in English. It’s only the printing on the keyboard that’s different.

 Thanks!

Thanks!

Hello Simon,

The British keyboard has 79 keys, but the American one has 78. Also, the Return
key is a different shape on the two keyboards. The French keyboard is like the
British one, but the keys are labelled differently. The British one is qwerty,
and the French one is azerty. The labelling of the keys is transparent to the
device it is used with. The layout is set on the iDevice or computer.

I have a shortcut to switch rapidly between French and English on my Mac, which
has keys printed with the French layout.

Cheers,

Anne

But if you have the English keyboard as your default on your mac then I was
under the belief that it worked correctly.

Hello,

The layout is like the British English keyboard. I don’t know how it behaves if
set to an American layout. I switch between the British and French layouts on
my Mac all the time.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello,

Yes, the French keyboard will work for English. The only difference is what’s
printed on the keys. Your iDevice will not know the difference.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi, list.

I saw a French Apple Magic Keyboard on Craig List.

Would I be able to use it for English typing exclusively if I purchase this
French Keyboard? Would the voiceOver keys be second and third from the left
edge in second row?

Thanks!
