RE: Anyone Having Issues with BARD App?

2021-01-31 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Mickey,

I'm not sure what future BARD features will occur as a result of their moving
to the cloud but I know playing BARD content on digital assistants like the
Amazon Echo will be one of them. Folks on other email lists are commenting that
BARD download speeds have increased since last week's maintenance. I expect
future portable devices provided by the NLS for streaming BARD content will
also require cloud presence.

The NS finished round 1 of migration to the cloud last week. The first time I
used the BARD Mobile app to search the BARD website on my iPhone SE 2020, I was
prompted to log in and my user ID and password were already filled in. I
executed the log in and have not been prompted to do so since. You might
suggest that your friend close the BARD Mobile app out of the App Switcher,
restart her device, and try again. If she continues to have issues, suggest she
write to nlsdownl...@loc.gov for assistance. They are very good about helping.

Hi, is anyone having trouble logging into their BARD app? I can get in just
fine on my own device, but a friend is having issues with hers.
It ll appear to log her in. When she goes to double tap on a book, however, the
app prompts her to log in. She s getting some sort of a Failed error message.

Thanks for any tips,

Joe

2021-01-31 Thread Alan Lemly
Dacia,

I'd recommend you write BARD Support at nlsdownl...@loc.gov for help with your
issue. I know they are having some issues with folks logging in with the BARD
Mobile app since the maintenance that occurred last week and I expect asking
them will be your best bet.

RE: Sorry, more about the direct touch problem

2021-01-31 Thread Richard Turner
I’m glad I was able to help.
It is a confusing aspect of this new update.
I know Apple was trying to help and I guess it does now in 14.4 but I wish they
had just forced developers to make their apps accessible to begin with.
O well.
Whenever I said “I wish” my Father used to say “wish in one hand and s**t in
the other, then see which one you get first.”
Crude, but I didn’t say I wish much around him after that, grin.

I got it figured out. I didn’t realize I had to activate direct touch from the
rotor itself once I selected it under rotor actions. When I went out of rotor
actions and into the app, I turned the rotor and flicked. Now it’s working as
expected. Thanks for all your help and patience.

I am using an SE 2020. I'm going to try to answer two questions here.
First, if Direct Touch is not under Rotor Actions, either you are not on 14.4,
or you removed it from the Rotor and need to add it back under the rotor
settings.
As for using it with mBraille, make sure in that Rotor Actions, direct touch,
that when you touch an app, it says selected. If you double tap it, it will
stop saying selected. But, to work, it has to say selected.
The first time, you may have to turn the rotor to Direct touch and turn it on,
but after that it will just work.
Or at least, it does for me.
I'm using mBraille to reply to this message and while it says direct touch when
I start, it just works, without any monkeying around with the rotor.

Richard

Well, obviously, I’m doing something wrong. I go into voice over, rotor
actions, direct touch, and select blindfold solitaire and MBRL. Leave settings
and try to use either app with no success. Still see “direct touch” prompt and
can’t activate the keyboard or the cards. When I check back the two apps do not

2021-01-31 Thread M. Taylor
What's Behind America's Starlink Obsession? PC Magazine

What's Behind America's Starlink Obsession?
Starlink is catnip for PC Mag readers. Just say the word and they come
a'clicking in the tens of thousands. The satellite ISP's mystique is a
combination of Elon Musk (an unappealingly named men's cologne) and
Americans' hopeless desperation for better home Internet choices. And at
this point, it's getting way out of hand.

"SpaceX is aiming to one day deliver 10Gbps internet speeds over its
satellite internet system," our story reads, couching SpaceX's ambitions in
similar terms to my ambition to have ripped abs.
Americans are desperate for better connectivity. They've given up on
regulators, incumbent ISPs and their own communities to provide them.
They're holding out for a hero ('till the end of the night). They want Musk
to be their streetwise Hercules, but he's Loki. But not hot. Kind of moist.
Damp Loki.

Putting up satellites is the most expensive, lowest-capacity way to spread
Internet access, except in very rural regions. Whether your satellite is a
Virgo or a LEO doesn't change this. The fact that anyone in a suburb thinks
it's a more practical solution than just running fiber a few hundred yards
speaks only to the complete failure of the US ISP market to encourage
buildouts.

Of 114 million fixed-Internet subscriptions in the US, around 2 million use
satellite Internet. It's the Internet of last resort. And while Starlink
will release a few million rural users from the tyranny of Hughesnet and
Viasat, it's not going to help us with our cable monopolies.

A research note from Cowen says that at full capacity, the Starlink
constellation will support 485,000 data streams. Multiply by, say, 100 for
oversubscription, and you get around 50 million people-but that's globally.
The US is only 2% of the area of the globe. An anonymous, but convincing
space-tech blogger points out that only about 3% of Starlink's satellites
will be over the US at any given time and estimates a maximum capacity of
about a million US subscribers.

Starlink will have a much bigger effect elsewhere in the world, in places
where it's actually impossible to build good wired broadband. I'd be excited
to see what a Starlink connection per village does in much of the developing
world. If a village of 100 families each pay $1 per month to share a
terminal connected to a Wi-Fi router...now we're talking.

The wireless internet promised by T-Mobile and Verizon could help tens of
millions more Americans than Starlink, except that T-Mobile and Verizon have
miserably failed at communicating and promoting it. Verizon's 5G Home
rollout is incomprehensible. It's Schrodinger's Internet. T-Mobile service
is available to customers at certain addresses, but the carrier doesn't
provide coverage maps.

There are much easier ways to offer more Internet to more Americans. We
could demand that our states drop their bans on municipal broadband. Or we
could demand that the Federal government open cable and fiber lines to
competitive providers, as is true in Canada and the UK, as Canadian ISP rep
(and ex-PCMagger) Bryson Masse pointed out on Twitter.

But no. Elon Musk!! Gamestonk!! We have decided that as a society it is
easier to shoot a thousand satellites into space than just pass a law.

Richard, thanks so much for your information. I’m also noticing the direct
touch problem with MBRL. I’ll try going through apps to see if the MBRL issue
gets fixed. Again thanks for the info.

You can select what apps you want to. It will still say direct touch when going
into the apps you choose, but you don't have to find direct touch and flick up
to turn it on any longer. Hope this helps.

Anyone Having Issues with BARD App?

2021-01-31 Thread Joe Orozco
Hi, is anyone having trouble logging into their BARD app? I can get in
just fine on my own device, but a friend is having issues with hers.
It’ll appear to log her in. When she goes to double tap on a book,
however, the app prompts her to log in. She’s getting some sort of a
Failed error message.

Thanks for any tips,

Joe

2021-01-31 Thread Richard Turner
OK.
RS Games is self-voicing.
So, go to settings, Rotor Actions, Direct Touch Apps.
Any app listed there that says “selected” should mean that you can use it
without having to mess with Direct Touch on the rotor.
Go through all the apps in there and make sure RS Games is selected.
Then, even though it says “direct Touch” VoiceOver will work.
I just tried that and it works fine.

The other option is to turn off VoiceOver to play.

Or, put Direct Touch back on the rotor and turn to it each time and flick up to
ON in order to play.

Re: sluggish input when writing text

2021-01-31 Thread Brad Snyder
I agree. Closing all running apps and restarting your phone may help.
Not sure about your phone locking “early”, as you say. I have noticed my phone
doing some strange behavior since the iOS 14.4 update. Mostly, it locks up in
the middle of doing something normal. The issue usually resolves itself in a
moment or so. A few times, I have had to press the Side-button, and then
unlock the phone and normal behavior resumes. Not sure if this is what you are
experiencing.

It sounds like your phones resources are very limited.
As for the locking, make sure you do not have low power mode on, which you can
turn off with Siri, or under the Settings, Battery. And the auto lock time can
be set in settings, under display and brightness.

You can select what apps you want to. It will still say direct touch when going
into the apps you choose, but you don't have to find direct touch and flick up
to turn it on any longer. Hope this helps.

Re: sluggish input when writing text

2021-01-31 Thread Richard Turner
Have you closed all apps out of the app switcher and rebooted the phone?
It sounds like your phones resources are very limited.
As for the locking, make sure you do not have low power mode on, which you can
turn off with Siri, or under the Settings, Battery. And the auto lock time can
be set in settings, under display and brightness.

It says you are in a Collection, because you are using Icon view. That
shouldn’t matter.

My guess is:
1. You do not have the Sidebar enabled, or
2. You are not running macOS Catalina or Big Sur, or
3. You do not have your iPhone properly connected to your Mac.

Again, I encourage you to go back and read my first email on this topic, and
very carefully read every word. I am confident you are not following the

How to take your temperature with an iPhone and smart thermometer
You can take your temperature using your iPhone by linking the Apple Health app
to a smart thermometer. Smart thermometers, like Kinsa's QuickCare and Smart
Ear products, let you upload your health readings to a phone. As long as your
iPhone and thermometer are within 10 feet of each other, they can sync
automatically. Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

A question for all the musicians out there?

Has anyone any recommendations for a good drum machine app?

Thanks in anticipation,

Martin

RE: sluggish input when writing text

2021-01-31 Thread CJ & AA MAY
Recently when typing in text, my iphone seems a bit sluggish and I have to wait
half a second between each letter. Any ideas what might be causing this.

Also, since the last update, it seems to be going into lock mode far quicker
than I want. Can I amend this in settings?

It says you are in a Collection, because you are using Icon view. That
shouldn’t matter.

My guess is:

1. You do not have the Sidebar enabled, or

2. You are not running macOS Catalina or Big Sur, or

3. You do not have your iPhone properly connected to your Mac.

Again, I encourage you to go back and read my first email on this topic, and
very carefully read every word. I am confident you are not following the
instructions as written.

I read it several times, and I try to do what you say, but I don’t find it.
When I do command shift H, it says that I’m in a collection. There I find
desktop, dropbox and public folder.

Rena,

Go back and carefully read my email from earlier today. Pay close attention to
every step. It's all in there. You're just missing some thing.

Hello,

I connected the iPhone 6S to the mac, and I open finder, but I don’t know what

I don’t see the iPhone.

Please, explain in detail.
