RE: Sharing my Vaccine Card Via WhatsApp?

2021-11-16 Thread Fazil M.
Thanks much, Sieghard.

Actually, I am supposed to upload it to a website of Saudi government who wants
its visitors to be fully vaxinated. Thus, I thought I should WhatsApp it to my
friend who would help me fill out this paperwork.

Lets suppose if he is using my phone to complete this paperwork, can he upload
it to that website out off my phone?

Thanks!

Hi Fazil,

Why on earth would you want to share your vaccine passport with anybody? That
is completely private and confidential information and while you have to show
it when required, you definitely wouldn't want to share it with anybody via
WhatsApp.

The only reason I can think of why somebody would want to share it is because
they are trying to allow other people who don't want to get vaccinated to
illegally use their vaccine passport.

Sorry to put it so bluntly, but you don't share your passport, either, do you?

RE: Face ID performance was RE: Siri is Acting Crazy Again!

2021-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Or you have to own and wear an Apple Watch which is protected by a passcode and
which is unlocked. If you allow the Apple Watch to unlock your phone then as
long as it is on your wrist you can unlock your phone while wearing a mask, but
you can't authenticate purchases. Of course if you have an Apple Watch you
could use it to authenticate an Apple Pay purchase instead which does not
required any further verification as long as you unlocked your watch after you
put it on and you haven't taken it off since then.

James,

Yes, Face ID works perfectly well with small changes in your appearance and in
dimly lit rooms. The only thing that thwarts it is wearing a mask as in these
pandemic times. You have to type in your passcode when wearing a mask.

I have to agree with Sieghard that Face ID is much easier and faster than Touch

Then definitely expect 2 years rather than 1 because all rumors indicate it's
unlikely the 14 phones will get Touch Id.

Have you actually really tried Face Id? I mean really had a chance to use an
iPhone 11, 12 or 13 and set it up and use it?

You might be surprised how fast and good it is, in my opinion much more
reliable than Touch Id.

more years to do so, I can do it.

I've only had my iPhone 8 for just over 2 years. So my phone still has a lot

Let me tell you all, that new battery sure does make a difference in available

It doesn't seem to matter whether there are other apps running or if mail is
the only app in the app switcher. Apparently the mail retrieval problem is an
actual thing because there are various solutions proposed all around the net so
I know I'm not the only one who is having this issue. But shutting down my
phone every time (or nearly every time) I want to read my mail is really
annoying. There are times when, no matter what I do, my mail simply will not
download.

I have reported this to Apple and hopefully they can reproduce it and address
it in a future update. But it is sufficiently annoying that I wish I had not
updated.

Yes, Richard is correct, but the problem isn't that people are chatting or

hijacking a thread without changing the subject line or starting a new thread.

I thought the subject line was clear enough without having to ramble on and on
about the irritating tendency of people to continually respond to a message and
write things completely unrelated to the original subject; rather than starting
a new message with control_n or Command+n or whatever the way you start a new
message so it begins a new thread on the subject you actually want to talk
about.

But, apparently, I cannot expect a subject line which says all I needed to say
to be enough for some.

2021-11-16 Thread Bill Gallik
I contacted Apple support earlier today; the support tech suggested all sorts
of possibilities, all options I had already tried to no avail. She even ran a
diagnostic on my iPhone 8 to make sure the sensors were still functioning
properly. They were.

At this point I’m going to deploy one of my Bluetooth earphones until I can
purchase a new iPhone or until the next iOS release resolves this problem.

As I say, this issue manifested after installing iOS15.1 so hopefully the next
software update will correct the problem. Although, it doesn’t really matter
because I’ve been seriously considering acquiring a new iPhone 12 anyway.

Probably not because my issues are not exchange related. But it was a good

Hi Kimberly,

There was an issue with microsofts exchange 365 services mainly calendar today
with IOS mail app,

Any chance this is related to your phone?

I have not been noticing mail related issues on my phone.

Re: IOS 15

2021-11-16 Thread Kimberly Gardner
It doesn't seem to matter whether there are other apps running or if
mail is the only app in the app switcher. Apparently the mail
retrieval problem is an actual thing because there are various
solutions proposed all around the net so I know I'm not the only one
who is having this issue. But shutting down my phone every time (or
nearly every time) I want to read my mail is really annoying. There
are times when, no matter what I do, my mail simply will not download.

I have reported this to Apple and hopefully they can reproduce it and
address it in a future update. But it is sufficiently annoying that I
wish I had not updated.

Face ID performance was RE: Siri is Acting Crazy Again!

2021-11-16 Thread Alan Lemly
James,

Yes, Face ID works perfectly well with small changes in your appearance and in
dimly lit rooms. The only thing that thwarts it is wearing a mask as in these
pandemic times. You have to type in your passcode when wearing a mask.

So, it doesn't matter when you make small changes like wearing a cap or how
your hair is fixed? And, face I D works in a dimly lit room?

Just curious,

You just hold the phone out from you at the level of your face, maybe 15
inches. The thing works, dark or light, with or without dark glasses.

I have tried face ID, and I use it all of the time on my iPhone 11. Even though
I don't have a problem with face ID, I'd still appreciate having touch ID as an
option. There are times I just find it annoying to have to wave the phone in

I have to agree with Sieghard that Face ID is much easier and faster than Touch
ID ever was. I would not wait to upgrade to an iPhone containing Touch ID if
your current iPhone isn't meeting your needs.

I use Verizon and I've got an awesome deal. I get 5 gigs of data and unlimited
talk and text for around $27 per month. Esther, I'm not getting a 13 pro this
year. I'm holding out for a phone with touch ID. If I have to wait a couple
more years to do so, I can do it.

I've only had my iPhone 8 for just over 2 years. So my phone still has a lot
of life left in it. I also just had my battery replaced.

Let me tell you all, that new battery sure does make a difference in available
time. I also have a great new otterbox simitry case for my iPhone 8.

Yes, I understand and agree with you Richard. I was just lumping in two similar

a gradual or subtle shift in topics or if it was more abrupt.

Re: Phone Messages Help Please.

2021-11-16 Thread Esther Levegnale
Hey, Joshua!

Good to hear from you. Sometimes Siri is temperamental. It works at times,
then it doesn't. I'm wondering if he's getting dementia! Haha! I'm in the
market for a new phone, but I like the size of my 7+. I'l go to the Apple
store and see what they can offer. I think I'd like the 1-TB size because I
download a lot of music and a lot of BARD books. I love BARD?, and I certainly
know that you do too--considering the amount you have on your phone! Haha!

Anyway, take care and I'll keep you and everyone about phones and Siri!

RE: AirPods question

2021-11-16 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I could be wrong,

But I don't think you can,

I thought by default the pods had the phone as default device,

But with the airpods everything is synched to each device via the apple id used
on the phone,

But I think if you paired the airpods to your mac computer
They are still going to use the same apple id to pair with your phone
And as phones pick up phone calls,
However in saying that,

Airpods are meant to switch automatically to the device you are using so if you
have the pods in and start using your mac computer then you should hear your
mac,

But good luck with that as I haven't had it working for me with IOS 15
But under that theory if you answered your call on the mac
Then your pods should be what you hear it through.

Good luck with your search

Subject: AirPods question

I realize that syncing across devices with AirPods can be a beautiful thing,
but is there any way to make sure this doesn’t happen. If I want to use the
pods, for example on my Mac mini, I will get a message, or a phone call, or an
alarm will go off on my iPhone, and the connection automatically goes to the
iPhone. I have looked in settings on both phone and computer and I hope I’m
missing something, because I would really like to prevent this from happening.

Thanks

Kristeen

I have tried face ID, and I use it all of the time on my iPhone 11. Even though
I don't have a problem with face ID, I'd still appreciate having touch ID as an
option. There are times I just find it annoying to have to wave the phone in

I have to agree with Sieghard that Face ID is much easier and faster than Touch
ID ever was. I would not wait to upgrade to an iPhone containing Touch ID if
your current iPhone isn't meeting your needs.

I use Verizon and I've got an awesome deal. I get 5 gigs of data and unlimited

Re: What has Face ID VS Touch ID have to do with Siri? was RE: Siri is Acting Crazy Again!

2021-11-16 Thread Richard Turner
Charles, changing the subject line doesn't change the Change the thread.
So, if I begin deleting all the messages with the subject line; Siri is acting
crazy again; and someone had started a new conversation just by changing the
subject line, that message will be deleted along with the rest because with
message threading on; it will be grouped with the original message.
The only way to have a new topic is to start a new email.
That is why on groups.io lists, there is a link at the bottom of every message
to start a new topic.
Sadly, googlegroups doesn't offer that.

RE: What has Face ID VS Touch ID have to do with Siri? was RE: Siri is Acting Crazy Again!

2021-11-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yes, Richard is correct, but the problem isn't that people are chatting or
talking about issues that are off topic. The problem is that people are
hijacking a thread without changing the subject line or starting a new thread.

RE: new iPhone

2021-11-16 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi James,

I expected your BARD books might already be unzipped since that was required
for using them on a Victor Reader Stream. I agree that as long as NLS BARD is
operating and available, re-downloading the book again is much faster than
attempting to rezip and transfer them using an iPhone app.

I'll save this post for future reference. But, as far as Bard books, it sounds
quicker to just download the books again. All of my books on my external hard
drive are unzipped.

Thank you for your responce.

Hi James,

It is possible to transfer previously downloaded BARD books from a computer to
BARD Mobile running on an iDevice. You have to decide whether the involved
steps take less effort than just downloading the book again. You'll need a
cloud service like Dropbox and the BARD book should be in its original zip
format as downloaded from NLS. I have used Dropbox ever since getting my first
iPhone because it was the service allowing access between files on my computer
and the apps I used on my iPhone. So it only takes a short time to get zipped
BARD books already in a Dropbox folder to the BARD Mobile app. From the Dropbox
app, place focus on the zip file, select export, and then double tap on BARD
Mobile. If BARD Mobile isn't presented as an option, you might have to execute
a More button to choose it. You can also use the iOS native Files app to share
a zipped BARD book with BARD Mobile provided the book is located in a cloud
service available to Files. I just tested transfer of two separate BARD zip
files I downloaded over a year ago using the Dropbox and the Files apps and the
process only took a few seconds and each book played fine in BARD Mobile.

Hello,

I have around two hundred Bard books saved to a hard drive in case I want to
put them back on a thumb drive and play them on my NLS Digital player.

I suppose that it isn't possible to put these books on my iPhone S E 2020
without just down loading them to the phone from Bard again?

No such problems here either! Have you tried restarting (turning off/on), the
phone? Sometimes these restarts help solve little glitches like the one
described. Good luck!

One very annoying property of iOS15.1 is that the feature of switching to
SPEAKER automatically during a telephone call when you move the phone away from
your ear seems to be badly broken. There was a thread in this list discussing
the matter where it was suggested that a single finger right flick (or left)
would resolve this bug, this has not worked for me. If I had to do it over
again knowing this, I would have remained with iOS15.0; I recommend you do not
load iOS15.1 unless using the speaker during a call is a non-factor for you.

One consequence of the above described bug is that “Be My Eyes” is rendered
quite useless for me because I’m not able to communicate with the volunteer
answering my request. I find it nearly impossible to accurately aim the phone
to transmit a decent picture of the item I need identified with the phone
pressed up against my ear.

RE: new iPhone

2021-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I thought you can access any of the BARD books at any time on their library?
Anyways, I found that while there are definitely some improvements especially
in the last 2-3 years so many of these incredible features Apple announces are
really just relatively minor things or things which benefit the sighted world a
lot more which of course is to be expected. Just listen to the keynote for the
iPhone 13 intro, most of it is about taking pictures, cool effects and all
sorts of stuff I never do and I bet if I upgraded from my iPhone 11 to an
iPhone 13 I would barely notice the difference.

The minie's don't have good enough battery life for me. That's the point when
it comes to bard books. You can either stream or download audible books,
however, you can't do that with bard books. The only place you can keep your
bard mobile books is on your iPhone. I really hope that will change. I hate
the thought of all my downloaded books only on one device not backed up. Of
course, I always make sure my bard book is backed up to my external hard drive.
However, I have to redownload that book again to my external hard drive if the
only copy of the book is on my iPhone. Of course, I have to make sure my
external hard drive is also backed up in case something goes wrong with my
drive. It is very interesting about these new iPhones that will be coming in
future. You can just do so much cool stuff with them.

I don't have a problem with face ID, I'd still appreciate having touch ID as an

Have you actually really tried Face Id? I mean really had a chance to use an

You might be surprised how fast and good it is, in my opinion much more

I use Verizon and I've got an awesome deal. I get 5 gigs of data and unlimited
talk and text for around $27 per month. Esther, I'm not getting a 13 pro this
year. I'm holding out for a phone with touch ID. If I have to wait a couple
more years to do so, I can do it.

I've only had my iPhone 8 for just over 2 years. So my phone still has a lot
of life left in it. I also just had my battery replaced.

Let me tell you all, that new battery sure does make a difference in available
time. I also have a great new otterbox simitry case for my iPhone 8.

Keep in mind that often phone prices remain the same or more or less the same
even if storage goes up. At one point we started out with phones like the 3GS
and 4 and maybe even still the 4S which started with 8 Gb, 16Gb and 32GB, then
16Gb, 32Gb and 64Gb were the normal, later it went to 128Gb and 256Gb, but
typically the pricing remained more or less the same. Storage is becoming
cheaper all the time.

But it's not going to stay the same price,

Hell the nz price for the 1tb 13 pro max is $2999 So 3k

I'd hate to know what the price of a 2tb device would be.

Even in the USA they'd be costly

The longer I wait, the more space I'll be able to buy. I'd be very upset if I
bought a one terabyte iPhone and the next year, a model came out with 2
terabytes. I don't live close to an apple store, so the chances of me getting
to try an iPhone with face ID isn't great.

You should at least report this as well via Apple's regular feedback mechanisms
because this isn't really an accessibility issue.

I hope everyone is writing
accessibil...@apple.com and reporting these
insane variations on words.

Asking for the spelling of Déjà vu and getting “t n n o r m a l l” is
absolutely insane.
That isn’t a word in any language I know of.

I get the same, not necessarily these words. I have also asked siri to spell a
word, in which she does correctly, but she adds nonsensical letters at the end
of the word. Because of the craziness with siri lately, unless I'm away from
home, I use my Amazon Alexa for info instead. At least she hseems to be
intelligent.

Since installing 15.1 I have noticed Siri returning bizarre answers for words I
want the correct spelling of.

For example, I asked Siri to spell junk and it spells it j u n k. But if I ask
for the spelling of dejavu I get t n n o r m a l e e. Truly bizzar.

Has anyone else seen this and is there a fix for it? I have tested with a
number of other words and almost all of them give the spelling but with t n n o
r m a l either before the word or after it.

Thanks for any help.

Before you do that, try waking up the phone first. If the phone is asleep, it
will not switch to speaker. I hit the power button once and that wakes up the
phone and then it will switch to speaker. If you have a home button, try
hitting that first then moving the phone away from your ear.

Hopefully that resolves your issue.

I find it nearly impossible to accurately aim the phone
to transmit a decent picture of the item I need identified with the phone
pressed up against my ear.

reliable than Touch Id.

Re: IOS 15

2021-11-16 Thread Bill Gallik

That is a very cool feature that I didn't realize the Bard Mobile app had.
Thanks for mentioning it.

The nice thing about bard, is that it is completely free. It doesn't
cost you anything. My previously downloaded bard books is now at
20176. I have them all stored on my external hard drive. Bard mobile
has a great feature that once on a book title of your bookshelf, you
can swipe down for additional options, like author, more info which
would tell you the summary of the book, an option to see all books by
that author that bard had, or all books in a specific category, or all
books in a specific series. Very cool.

You just hold the phone out from you at the level of your face, maybe 15
inches. The thing works, dark or light, with or without dark glasses.

I have tried face ID, and I use it all of the time on my iPhone 11. Even though
I don't have a problem with face ID, I'd still appreciate having touch ID as an
option. There are times I just find it annoying to have to wave the phone in
front of my face.

I have to agree with Sieghard that Face ID is much easier and faster than Touch
ID ever was. I would not wait to upgrade to an iPhone containing Touch ID if
your current iPhone isn't meeting your needs.

Then definitely expect 2 years rather than 1 because all rumors indicate it's
unlikely the 14 phones will get Touch Id.

Have you actually really tried Face Id? I mean really had a chance to use an

I realize that syncing across devices with AirPods can be a beautiful thing,
but is there any way to make sure this doesn't happen. If I want to use the
pods, for example on my Mac mini, I will get a message, or a phone call, or an

iPhone. I have looked in settings on both phone and computer and I hope I'm
missing something, because I would really like to prevent this from happening.

Subject: Siri not letting you send messages?

Hi all,

A friend of mine has the issue where she will ask Siri to send a message, she
starts to say her message and only gets two words out before Siri thinks she
has finished.
She knows not to pause at the beginning of the message.
Wondering what the best cause of action would be to fix this?
TIA.
