After trying several, I am back on the native calendar app.
It has improved quite a bit in the last year or so.
It has custom repeat which Fantastical used to have before they started

Hi all, thanks for your prompt replies and suggestions !

Well iPhone ex is not giving me any trouble and it can easily go for next 8 to
9 months and due to Smart Chip global shortages and expected price rise of
iPhone 14 and no expectations to bring any Ground breaking upgradation in
iphone 14 for VO users, I think it will be better to buy iPhone 13 right away.

Thank you once again to all of you for the replies!

Part of what decided me was my concern around price hikes and supply shortages
over the next number of years. Particularly for those of us on fixed incomes,
we're in for a rough stretch. Having as up to date a tool as I can afford
seemed like a good idea. It does so many things in life that I'd hate to have
the battery be worn out or some other thing go wrong when I might not be able
to afford a replacement. My XR is still kept as a backup and is also helpful
when I demonstrate apps while on Zoom calls among other things. The performance
difference is certainly noticable between the two phones. However, it wouldn't
be disasterous if I needed to send my new phone for repairs and use it as my
main phone again. That wasn't the case for my iPhone 7 which I've given to a
niece who wanted it. Going from a 7 to an XR, you really feel the difference.

The XR with its A12 chip can still hang in there but I get the sense that its
future as my backup might be two or three years at the very most.

Subject: Buying iPhone 13 or wait for iPhone 14

Hi friends, currently I'm using iPhone X in very good condition and want to
upgrade to the newest iPhone.
So, I should go for iPhone 13 or wait for iPhone 14, as reports suggest some
major upgradation are expected in iPhone 14 but I felt these are all for
sighted people and no reports suggesting anything new for blind or voice over
user's perspective.
So, do you think I should wait or go for iPhone 13 only?

Your suggestion will be highly appreciable!

Hi,

Microsoft was having an outage only impacting #iOS it isn't just you.
Hopefully a fix will be forth coming soon. Just wait it out and it
should resolve shortly.

Take good care.

Re: Buying iPhone 13 or wait for iPhone 14

2021-12-15 Thread Harshit Jaithwar
Hi all, thanks for your prompt replies and suggestions !
Well iPhone ex is not giving me any trouble and it can easily go for next 8 to
9 months and due to Smart Chip global shortages and expected price rise of
iPhone 14 and no expectations to bring any Ground breaking upgradation in
iphone 14 for VO users, I think it will be better to buy iPhone 13 right away.

Thank you once again to all of you for the replies!

I just used Be My Eyes with iOS 15.2 and the sound worked fine.
It is not the update that messed you up if the sound was a problem in 15.1.
It's your settings.,

Be My Eyes.

2021-12-15 Thread Jenny Bomareto
I updated my phone to iOS 15.2. For some reason when I called Be My Eyes isn’t
making the dinging noise just to let you know that it’s finding somebody to
help. I was hoping when I upgraded from 15.1 to 15.2 that would be resolved but
it has not. Any suggestions? Because I’ve called Be My Eyes twice and ask them.
Meaning the volunteers.

Thanks for your assistance regarding this matter.

RE: Siri, Please try again later, my observations

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
Well, I know it is easy to be a bit jaded at this point, but since I was making
a weather request, that logically has to access the servers.
The onboard things like simply asking for the battery life is fixed in 5.2.
I have not thoroughly tested the request that are clearly onboard the phone
yet, but I suspect they are significantly improved, at least, I choose to
believe that until I hear otherwise.

But I have to say in the past, if the issue resolved itself, the Apple
Accessibility would basically blow it off.

Now, they are actually following up.

A bit ironic since they have been aware of reduced functionality for a long
time; there was even a mainstream news article I think last week on CBC News
about this.
Of course they would say that this is of the upmost importance to them and
maybe for the accessibility team it is, but whether it is for the Siri team
that is a different story and in large organisations like Apple, Microsoft,
Google etc. there are many teams working on different aspects of a particular
product or service and there is sometimes extreme competition happening.
Anyways, I thought most of the Siri requests are supposed to be handled on the
device now and not so much in the cloud and on servers any more.

Here is how they responded, which I see as a very hopeful sign on how they are
prioritizing accessibility.
Hello Richard,

We let our team know about these issues you were experiencing. 15.2 did include
many fixes for VoiceOver and restored functionality to Siri, so it seems that
some the issues you encountered were, as you said, server related. But any
reports of VoiceOver and Siri not working together are being immediately
escalated and investigated.

That message appears because Siri’s servers are busy, down, flakey, in a bad

Or, your phone is too busy, to cranky, etc., but it seems to show that still,
for many things, Siri is reaching to the server and not just using your phone

I commented that I had run into the same issue after Tom had reported it while
the phone was locked.
Then, like Tom, a little while later, Siri responded just fine while the phone
was locked.

So, welcome to the age of technology which is lovely when it works, and a

But, it ain’t worth talking about when Siri cannot help because a few minutes
later it probably can.

I had this very same problem under 15.1. I updated yesterday to the latest iOS
release and it seems to have fixed it.

Siri, Please try again later, my observations

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
Since a couple of us today were bit by the Siri, ON it, Working on it, Sorry, I
cannot do that right now, please try again later message; I thought I would
state my conclusion about this.

That message appears because Siri's servers are busy, down, flakey, in a bad
mood, whatever you want to call it.
Or, your phone is too busy, to cranky, etc., but it seems to show that still,
for many things, Siri is reaching to the server and not just using your phone
and at those times, you get that lovely message to try later when it cannot
talk to itself.

I commented that I had run into the same issue after Tom had reported it while
the phone was locked.
Then, like Tom, a little while later, Siri responded just fine while the phone
was locked.

So, welcome to the age of technology which is lovely when it works, and a
little annoying when it doesn't.

But, it ain't worth talking about when Siri cannot help because a few minutes
later it probably can.

You are likely in the Today view, or the app library.
Reboot, and see if you can come back to the home screen.
Also try telling Siri, "go to the home screen."

Updating did not cause this.
I've updated several devices with no issues at all.

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
Are you talking about your settings under notifications, Messages?
I've never had an issue with receiving the message sounds when a new text
message comes in.
I am on 15.2 now, and they work as always.

Check that Do Not Disturb is not on and make sure the phone mute switch is not
on.
Otherwise, you may need to call Apple Accessibility and have them do a screen
share to see if they can identify what is going on.

For the Canadians on the list: First-of-its-kind box uses braille to make finding your favourite chocolate accessible to the blind community

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
Link to the web article is at the end.
Purdys Braille Holiday Box

The box features braille orientation tabs, a braille chocolate legend and a QR
code that brings users who are blind or partially sighted to an accessible
screen reader version of the legend.
"The braille on the Purdys box is about more than accessibility, it's about
inclusion. It's about feeling seen, heard, and cared about as a consumer and
frankly, as a person," says Molly Burke, a leading digital creator in the blind
and partially sighted community. "Imagine going 27 years without being able to
pick your own chocolates without the help of another person or technology,
that's been my life until now. This is more than a box of chocolates, it's the
sign of change."
To spread the joy even further, the full Purdys legend is also available in the
10 most spoken languages in Canada (English, French, Spanish, Italian, German,
Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Tagalog and Arabic). The multilanguage legend is
available to view at

Purdys has also made a $10,000 CAD donation to the CNIB Foundation through
Purple Partnerships, their philanthropic initiative.
The Holiday Braille Box will be available again to buy online at purdys.com

RE: Home button [was "RE: Getting a new phone and asking questions"]

2021-12-15 Thread Carolyn
I most definitely agree with that, Christopher.

I am totally blind and was 82, when I got my phone without a home button, had
not the first problem at all. I studied what Rita Howels posted on another
list, just read over and over it, and it penetrated my brain. My husband was
astonished. I really would not want another phone with a home button now.

For those who don't have any experience with an iPhone that doesn't have a home
button, and who may be skeptical about getting an iPhone without a home button,
I'd just like to share my experience from earlier today. I was in the waiting
room while my wife was having a medical procedure done, and I was constantly
going back and forth between my person iPhone 11 and my employer's iPhone 7,
and I realized that all things being equal, I definitely prefer a phone without
a home button. Note that having a home button wouldn't be a deal breaker with
me, I just found it so much easier finding things in my dock or up in the
status bar without having to worry about that space you lose with the home
button. Plus I think it makes braille screen input a lot easier as well. If
people have experience with both, and prefer a phone with a home button, then
that's great, but if you're skeptical about getting a phone without a home
button then I'd really suggest you give it a go before deciding that you prefer
a phone with a home button. That's just my $0.02.

Hi,

The 12 is bigger than the se and the 7, The 12 range and the 13 range don't
have home buttons but you can set the power button to switch voiceover off / on,

But is your SE one of the original from about 5 years ago or is it the SE 2020
which does have a home button and would be pretty much identical to the iPHone
7 And work as you would know your current phone does.

Hope this helps.

Re: Buying iPhone 13 or wait for iPhone 14

2021-12-15 Thread Michael Feir
I actually made that decision and got an iPhone 13 a couple of months ago.
The better performance and battery life were very tempting. I was also able
to get the 512 gb version and thereby double my onboard storage space. The
better camera has proven to be a much more appreciated improvement that I
would ever have guessed given my total blindness.
Part of what decided me was my concern around price hikes and supply
shortages over the next number of years. Particularly for those of us on
fixed incomes, we're in for a rough stretch. Having as up to date a tool as
I can afford seemed like a good idea. It does so many things in life that
I'd hate to have the battery be worn out or some other thing go wrong when
I might not be able to afford a replacement. My XR is still kept as a
backup and is also helpful when I demonstrate apps while on Zoom calls
among other things. The performance difference is certainly noticable
between the two phones. However, it wouldn't be disasterous if I needed to
send my new phone for repairs and use it as my main phone again. That
wasn't the case for my iPhone 7 which I've given to a niece who wanted it.
Going from a 7 to an XR, you really feel the difference. So many things,
including VoiceOver, make heavy use of the AI neural engine. The XR with
its A12 chip can still hang in there but I get the sense that its future as
my backup might be two or three years at the very most.

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
As Christopher already said, if you are unhappy with your phone, the 13 series
are great phones. If you are not in a hurry to change phones then wait the 8
or 9 months to see what the 14 brings. Then, you could buy a 13 at likely a
slightly lower price if the 14 doesn't offer that much over the 13.
The 13 has a much faster processer than the X you have now, and better cameras.

Are there particular aspects of the new phone that has you chomping at the bit?

Hi friends, currently I'm using iPhone X in very good condition and want to
upgrade to the newest iPhone.
So, I should go for iPhone 13 or wait for iPhone 14, as reports suggest some
major upgradation are expected in iPhone 14 but I felt these are all for
sighted people and no reports suggesting anything new for blind or voice over
user's perspective.
So, do you think I should wait or go for iPhone 13 only?

Your suggestion will be highly appreciable!

RE: mirroring the iPhone?

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
Mirroring the iPhone sadly has nothing to do with deleting text messages.
Theoretically, if you are set up properly in iCloud on both the phone and the
watch, it should behave the way you want. I personally do not bother with text
messages on my watch, so beyond the theory, I cannot help.
However, 877-204-3930 Apple Accessibility very likely could answer this in
fairly short order.

Re: mirroring the iPhone?

I looked at the choices under notifications in the watch app,  and the way I read things, you are given the opportunity to choose which apps' notifications appear on both devices. Mirroring apparently means allowing the notifications to appear on both devices, but this does not mean that clearing a notification from one device will remove it from the other.

This will only work the first time you use the phone during set up unless you
have set the accessibility shortcut under accessibility settings.

Hi all, so right now I have an iPhone S E and the battery is crappy. I called
verizon and told them what "i wanted and they suggested an iPhone 12. Here is
what I want. I want an iPhone with a home button and a better battery than
the S E. If I can't have a home button here is my question. My first question
is the 12 the same size as either the 7 or the S E. Second, if I don't have a
home button how do I turn voice over on and off? I know I can use seri but is
there another way to turn voice over on and offf.

thanks in advance for any help.Lelia

RE: Buying iPhone 13 or wait for iPhone 14

2021-12-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
IMHO, that depends on how unhappy you are with your iPhone X. You can get an
iPhone 13 now, but you'll need to wait eight months to get an iPhone 14. Are
you willing to lose that 8 months you could be using an iPhone 13 to wait for
an iPhone 14 where we only have rumors on what it's going to have for new
features? I can't answer that for anyone else but myself.

For me personally, if you're unhappy with the phone you have then I would never
wait. My wife, who's sighted, moved up from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 12 this
past summer. Sure she could have waited a couple of months to see what the
iPhone 13 had to offer, but that was another couple of months she'd have to put
up with a phone she wasn't happy with. Sure, she could have saved a few dollars
by waiting or gotten a phone with another year of updates, but IMHO, there's
just not enough of a delta from one phone to the next to justify waiting if it
means holding on to a phone you're not happy with. On the other hand, if I had
an iPhone X then I wouldn't be rushing out to get an iPhone 13 right now, but I
tend to hold on to my phones until they stop receiving updates or I just get
frustrated with their performance as compared to the latest and greatest. I
have an iPhone 11 right now, and I'm not tempted to consider moving up to the
13, and I doubt I'll be interested in the 14 either.

RE: Bluetooth Speaker With Microphone

2021-12-15 Thread Simon A Fogarty
TheUE boom 2 has a microphone and you can use it to talk to others from calls
on the phone et ,

The wonder boom which is smaller than the boom doesn’t have a microphone in it,

 That is the wonder boom,

Yes the roam when on Bluetooth cuts some of the features out,

Amazon alexa / goole home are stod\pped
So possibly that is why it's not working for you.

As for calls,
I'm yet to try that out.

I don't think you can make voice calls with a Sonos Roam; in fact while Alexa
works well on any Sonos speaker, the ability to use the Alexa Intercom
functionality or to make phone calls is blocked somehow. I don't know why this
is, but unless something changed very recently it is not possible.
Also, my Wanderboom 2 does not have a microphone, it is strictly a Bluetooth
speaker.

Yeah I hve a UE Boom 2 speaker that I have used with my phone and it has a

We used it for phone calls with friends in Australia before zoom and facetime
really got up and running.

Not sure how much they cost these days

The other might be the sonos roam
Which I believe has a microphone in it.

Is anyone currently using a BluTooth speaker connected to their iPhone with a

Hi Kay,

Good luck with that,

I’ve been trying to get that to workfor years but it doesn’t.

Even reading them on one doesn’t cancel out the other.

At least didn’t

I don’t think it did anything more to change this.
