You can also use your Alexa to help find your iPhone as well. If I
don't know where my iPhone is, I just say Elexa find my phone. Then,
she will call my iPhone, and I can hear my phone ring and locate it.

As for me, I use Good Maps Outdoors, Nearby Explorer, and Lazarillo GPS. Each
app works differently in various areas. Between them, however, I get the info
that I need.

Unfortunately I have not found anything that is even close to being as good as
nearby explorer and that app is no longer in development, really sad since I
think that was by far the best GPS app for blind people.

When I tried it I had blue tooth turned on in my hearing aids for phone calls.
The beeping sound came from my phone, not in my ears. I’ll continue to play
with it. I do tend to forget where I laid my phone, so I’ll have plenty of
chances to see if this is really true.
God bless!

As far as I understand, if you had purchased Nearby Explorer, you should still
be able to download it to your phone even though it isn't currently offered in

GoodMaps Explore, which replaced Nearby Explorer has become focused on indoor
navigation.
GoodMaps Outdoor is the old Seeing Eye GPS rebranded and made free.
Though, as others said, if you primarily want intersection announcements,
SoundScape with bone conduction headphones is excellent.

RE: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

2022-03-12 Thread Leo Bado
As a learning strategy, gaming is useful because it brings about the ludic
factor into the learning process, which provides a more similar approach to
the way little kids learn by reacting to stimulation. However, learning a
language really takes a combination of strategies, effort, motivation, and
some kind of formal instruction. Of course, one may ask, to which degree do you
need to dig deeper into strategies and formal instruction? The answer depends
on learner’s realistic goal. If you want to hold a conversation with
acquaintances or friends,, you may allow yourself to set the bar low, but you
won’t be able to understand what is spoken in a different context, let say, a
lecture. Learning through gaming is a powerful ally, but ineffective if
learners use it as a panacea, so to speak.

Best,

Leo Bado

Hello Leo,

I find your comments intriguing and, quite frankly, enlightening.

Not to get too far off-point, I want to ask you if you find apps like Duo
Lingo, accessible and can one truly learn a language, in your opinion using
such apps? If not, what do you recommend?

With regard to my recent experimentation with Duo Lingo, so far, I am not
finding the app accessible.

So, after opening the app, I did not create an account; at least not yet.
Perhaps this may have something to do with my interface experience.

Because I have a passing acquaintance with the language, I selected Spanish as
my free language of choice.

What I am presented with is a grid of photos upon which I can tap to hear the
Spanish word for that particular photo, a man, a woman, a chair, etc.

As I said, my limited interface choices may have something to do with the fact
that I am using the app without providing an email address. Or, perhaps there
is a setting I have yet to discover that would make the interface work as Chela
and Dave have described.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Hello Terri,

Even though I see that other listers have already made suggestions, I would
like to say something. Indeed, what you’re looking for is called gaming in the
language-learning strategies of recent theoretical accounts. On the other hand,
decontextualized memorization and traditional approaches on language learning
are not sufficiently enough effective to reach competence in any given spoken
language. That only works for archeologists or linguists researching on dead
languages.

My suggestion is trying a holistic approach in which you can carry out
different activities related to the four basic skills in any given language.
Gaming is pretty good, but it is just a small part of the learning process.
Learning a language as an adult is a complex process that requires getting out
of one’s comfort zone. However, this doesn’t mean that it should be boring or
nerve-wracking. In short, I would suggest not letting false expectations
entice you.

Best,

Leo Bado

Subject: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

Hello everyone,

I can't remember if this was recently asked here, or not. If so, I do

apologize. I know I saw similar questions somewhere.

Anyway, I am looking for an accessible App, to help me possibly learn a

new language. I am most interested in learning Chinese, Spanish, and

maybe one other as well. I don't know how possible any of this is. But I

just really want to try it, rather or not it works out.

I want an App where the learning is done through interaction. Not just

studying, or trying to do a lot of memorizing.

Also, I don't mind purchasing an App. Or paying to learn the languages.

But I would like the App to be quite accessible, and easy to use, if

possible.

What do you all think? Does what I am looking for, even exist?

Thank you,

Terri

Mark, I totally agree with you. One of the saddest mistakes I ever made was
uninstalling Nearby Explorer from my iPhone. GoodMaps sometimes gives street
names and sometimes not and also is selective about announcing POIs. Sometimes
it does and sometimes it doesn't for no reason that I can figure.

Re: best map app for announcing street intersections

2022-03-12 Thread Mike Arrigo
Unfortunately I have not found anything that is even close to being as good as
nearby explorer and that app is no longer in development, really sad since I
think that was by far the best GPS app for blind people.

RE: New iPhone without tactile home button.

2022-03-12 Thread Carolyn
Paula, I did not have Bluetooth turned on in my hearing aids at the time I
mislocated my phone. I don't know how I would have gotten direction, had I had
that turned on.

That is awesome. I haven't been able to call my iphone from another phone in
order to find it since the phone is connected to my hearing aids, so it just
rings into my ears. This is a great solution. Thanks.
God bless!

Speaking of Hay Siri, the other day I asked on Hay Siri, where is my phone. It
took a minute or so, but then the phone started making a sound, so I could find
it.

You can also go into Settings, Siri and search and turn on Listen for hey Siri
so you can invoke her by voice. The switch to turn on the side button to invoke
her is also on this setting screen.

Re: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

2022-03-12 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
I've used Duolingo before, and it is definitely accessible.

No, personally I don't think that Duolingo, by itself, is enough to learn a
language to fluency. It's always going to require real-life conversation with
natives of that language. Italki is a great service for that, but I do think
Duolingo is very useful.

As Richard said under a different subject, no LIDAR on the SE third generation.
I thought it was only available on the iPhone 13 Pro models but Richard says
it’s also available on the 12 Pro models.

Re: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

2022-03-12 Thread CHELA Robles
Are you using voice over or are you using zoom? If using voice over everything
reads out very well I’ve had no issues in setting up an account of course I did
this a long time ago like back in 2014 I’m now in the Emerald league in Spanish
because I want to brush up on it. So far so good. By the way I use voice over
and I’m totally blind. Plus if you want to ever try to chat with anybody in
Spanish I think for plus members that have certain audio classes to sign up for
but I’ve never done that nor do I wish to do so but they do have stories to
listen to that you can actually unlock it’s like reading comprehension they
have a series of questions after that. There’s even a Spanish podcast with
Duolingo. Anyway back to your set up, how did you choose a language without
setting up an account first? Did you press like a skip button maybe that’s why?

How to Switch the Incoming Call Banner Back to Full Screen on iPhone

2022-03-12 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

If, like me, you find it difficult to locate the incoming call banner near
the top of the display, when receiving a call while using the device, you
can easily switch it back to full screen, as it used to be in earlier
versions of iOS.

To make it so that the phone app takes up the entire display during an
incoming call:

1.
>From the Settings app, select, "Phone".

2.
Select "Incoming Calls".

3.
Select "Full Screen".

That's all there is to it.

Give it a try.

Mark

RE: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

2022-03-12 Thread M. Taylor

Mark

Subject: RE: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

In short, I would suggest not letting false expectations
entice you.

Best,
Leo Bado

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Looking for accessible language learning Apps

2022-03-12 Thread Leo Bado

Thank you,

Terri

Utilities Folder.

2022-03-12 Thread Carolyn
Somehow or other, at the top of my screen, out of the blue,
in the middle of the day, a Folder called Utilities is at
the top containing clock and camera.

I do not want this at all.

What do I do to get my phone like it was an hour or so ago,
please, and like it has been for an indefinite period of
time? Thanks.

RE: Question regarding bone conduction headsets

2022-03-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I’m on my second pair of Titaniums myself, and I use my Aftershokz every single
day. As far as alternatives are concerned, it depends on why you go for the
bone conduction head phones. If it includes being able to hear environmental
sounds in addition to your head phones then things like the Bose Frames and the
Apple Air Pods with their transparency mode would be options but they’re more
expensive than the Aftershokz.

Only you can decide if the Aftershokz are worth it or not, but if you use them
as much as I do then I think they’re worth the price, even if you need to
replace them every two years or so.

2022-03-12 Thread Trea Abma
Hi,

I’ve used my iPhone 11 for two years now, but yesterday I bought the new SE.
Face ID works for me, but I like Touch ID better.

Go to Settings, Face ID and passcode, enter your passcode, swipe to
require attention for face ID and make sure it’s turned off. This should
have been off by default if you initially set up your iPhone 13 Mini with
Voiceover running. I haven’t heard that this setting affects face ID
recognition in the dark but it certainly makes face ID much easier for
 the visually impaired.

Hi Chuck,

I strongly encourage you to set up face ID on
your new iPhone. Touch ID is not available on
iPhone swithout home buttons and having used
phones with both types of biometric
identification, face ID works much better than touch ID.
Good luck with your new iPhone and I hope
