Re: text shortcuts

2022-09-24 Thread Bill Gallik
Alison et al,

I suggest that, upon opening Settings, you use the search feature and look for
“text replacement” and that will take you directly to the button you need to
activate to get to the pertinent dialogue.

Re: The vagaries of updating.

2022-09-24 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Its no big deal. There are always bugs whenever you upgrade your
iPhone. Look what happened when IOS 13 came out. I'm not having all
these issues that so many people seem to have. If I go to the
notification center by swiping down from the top of my phone and I
double tap on a notification, it opens up youtube or pandora or
whatever. My Siri is working fine it brings up artists,or individual
songs on youtube music which is one of the music services I subscribe
to. I always hear phone calls whenever they come in and I hear
message notifications as well.

RE: Weird Recording Bug

2022-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
First, nice playing.

I think you are getting some clipping where the sound is too loud for the
recorder.

Are you set on having a video? If so, I don't know what other app to recommend.

For audio, I personally find Just Press Record to be fabulous!
You didn't say which phone you have. If it is a newer one with stereo
microphones, you should get a more open sounding recording.

There may be a way in the camera app to turn off Apple's built in filters, I
don't know.
You can turn them off in Just Press Record. Just Press Record is $4.99.

So I was recording a video of myself playing the piano. And I noticed that the
sound sort of cut in and out, or almost like the volume was being adjusted
throughout the video.

It's hard to describe, but maybe you can tell from the YouTube video:

https://youtu.be/Ki2VyfHlqvU

What exactly is going on here? Is there some way to disable this? I used to get
really nice sound quality from recording on the iPhone.

This was done in the Camera app.

Thanks,
Brandon

Hey, thanks.

Yeah I'm kind of set on video because I find people connect with that more than
just audio, and I like posting them on YouTube.

Would an external microphone help matters I wonder? I've been looking at some
options. But some of them I think redirect audio output so I'm not sure if it'd
work with VoiceOver.

For me, none! I have to put myself atop the notification, double-tap over and
over and over I don’t know how many times, until to the left of the
notification, is an “Open “ button, which is how I manage to open them. Even
the “OPen” button doesn’t show up; I seem to have to delete notifications below
or above sometimes, in order for the “Open” button to appear.

RE: Weird Recording Bug

2022-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
You should find Dolby ON has a good response on that phone.
It does video and I think now can stream directly to things like YouTube.
It has lots of settings to explore, but it is free.

2022-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
You shouldn't need an external microphone. But, if you do, I have a Zoom IQ6
I'm not using since my 13 pro has great stereo recording ability that I will
gladly sell for much less than a new one.

Yes Sieghard I can confirm this behaviour but is certainly not driving me mad
it happens rarely. But all the rest of complaints here I cannot confirm and for
me all works fine in the notification center which I am using all day long
because my iphone is my newspicker, my newspaper, my livescorer.

For me a notification sometimes seems to still be there, but if I flick down
nothing happens so it's actually gone but Voiceover still thinks it is there.
Usually if I flick to another notification and back it then sorts Itself out.

Ring doorbell alert in a foreign language

2022-09-24 Thread Holly
A very strange thing has happened with my Ring doorbell neighborhood alerts.
When I open the page to read the alert, voice over reads the post in a foreign
language. Everything else on the page she reads in English.

Has anyone had this happen? Lots of the buttons on the Ring app are not read
by voice over, so it is not very accessible in some areas.

So I was recording a video of myself playing the piano. And I noticed that the
sound sort of cut in and out, or almost like the volume was being adjusted
throughout the video.

It's hard to describe, but maybe you can tell from the YouTube video:

What exactly is going on here? Is there some way to disable this? I used to get
really nice sound quality from recording on the iPhone.

This was done in the Camera app.

Thanks,
Brandon

ping ping ball in a never ending maze

2022-09-24 Thread Amy Ruell
Asking this list for help as a last resort. This is long, so I ask for
patience.

Until September 16, I could access my Comcast email on my iPhone 13 Pro
without difficulty.

When I obtained my iPhone 14 Pro, I initially transferred from my iPhone 13
Pro to the new phone but noted I could no longer access my Xfinity email
from either phone.

I have done the following.

1. I contacted Apple.
2. We did diagnostic tests, wiped the phone clean, and set it up again,
all to no avail.
3. I also noted that I could no longer get my mail using Outlook 365,
although I had not made any changes.
4. I contacted Xfinity, spent 2 hours waiting and another 2 hours on
the phone with them. We verified that I could sign into the Xfinity website,
but could not read my email messages.
5. I was told to, and did contact the accessibility department at
Xfinity, even though I knew this was not an accessibility issue.
6. Accessibility at Xfinity verified that I needed to use Outlook or my
phone to access my email.
7. I called Xfinity again and spent the next 3 hours bouncing from one
person to the next. One person did not know what the word "blind" meant and
decided I needed to go to accessibility again after I defined it for him.
8. I have don the following to try and fix the problem: re-set my
iPhone to factory defaults, Reset network settings 3 times, deleted and
re-enabled my account at least 5 times. Changed my password at the
suggestion of one Xfinity representative.
9. I continue to get the error message when creating my account using
the native mail app on my iPhone. "No password provided for Comcast. Please
go to settings, mail, and create a password." When I do that, my password is
there.
10. Xfinity tells me to contact Apple again.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Amy

Siri Problem Solved

2022-09-24 Thread Arnold Schmidt
As the news commentator Paul Harvey sometimes used to say, this is just what,
not why. I have no idea why. Just before doing the following experiment, Siri
still was not working. A few days ago, when music recognition was discussed on
this list, I decided to put it into control panel and experiment with it. It
was probably about then when siri stopped working. Today, when I removed music
recognition from control panel, you have guessed it by now, siri works again. I
then put music recognition back into control panel, and siri still works. I
guess old siri was jealous that I had put another way to recognize music into
my phone, and it entered a period of sulking and pouting. But then, I guess it
is over it now, I hope for good. Being that old siri uses Shazam to recognize
music, it wasn't jealous when I installed that program several years ago.

RE: seeking recommendations for kitchen scales and cooking thermometers

2022-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Keith,

I personally find the talking scales from my Weigh to work best. I should
mention that I haven't tried a connected scale yet, but my problem with them is
that each time you want to weigh something you have to get out your iPhone, I
assume you would have to use some app to work with the scale and then hopefully
the scale once setup connects without fuss and can provide a continuous readout
as you add whatever ingredient you are weighing to the scale.

I enjoy cooking and baking and even if I say so myself I am quite good at it
having been taught by my Mom who has her Masters in home economics from Germany
back when she was young in the late 50's and early 60's. Back then they were
taught so many basics and of course while she is not a Chef, her education
included a lot of cooking and baking. Anyways, recipes from Germany always have
ingredients listed in grams which of course is much more precise than using
cups and spoons with the exception of some spices where it called for a
teaspoon of ground cumin or cloves or cinnamon in which case the teaspoon is
fine since that would only be 2 or 3 grams at best which is difficult to weigh.

If I bake and have to weigh flour, sugar, butter and whatever other ingredients
I may need I want to be able to do so quickly and accurately and the My Weigh
talking scale I have allows me to do this.

Just as one example, we have a traditional Christmas cake in Germany called
"Stollen" which is a yeast dough with a ton of stuff in it like ground almonds,
3 different types of raisins, fresh ginger, candied ginger, candied orange
peel, candied lemon peel, so I have to weigh all that in addition to flour,
butter, milk (I also weigh liquids), yeast and without a scale where you can do
this quickly and without fuss it would be a pain in the neck.

I know this topic has come up before and I think it was Krister who said his My
Weigh scales always break and never work more than a few months or maybe a
year, but that is not my experience. I had my first My Weigh scale for I think
around 20 years when it did at some point not work any more. It was the
VOX-3000 and the surprising thing is that when I contacted My weigh they
offered to replace it with a new scale for only the shipping cost which I
thought was amazing. I now have had that replacement scale for probably the
last 4 or 5 years and it just works.

I just did a quick search and here are the links and brief descriptions:

VOX-3000: The world’s only precision talking kitchen scale.

It uses a 9 Volt battery and has a 1 gram accuracy just as the Vox-2 which I
think is a newer model although they must have updated the Vox-3000 since it
says now that it can talk in English, Spanish, fRench and German and my old one
could only speak English as far as I know. The Vox-3000 also has a round
platform and comes with a plastic bowl which has a rim around the bottom which
sits on the platform so it actually cannot just slide off if you accidently
push against it.

For some reason they don't list the capacity of the Vox-3000, but if I remember
correctly it weighs up to 3000 grams as is implied in the model name, so 3 Kg
or 6.6 pounds.

My Weigh Vox 3000 | My Weigh | The best digital scales on
earth

VOX-2: Multi-purpose, high-capacity talking scale.

This one weighs up to 5 Kg and you can of course set it to grams/Kg and
ounces/pounds and it is accurate to 1 gram which is 0.0353 ounces.

Both of the My Weigh scales I have had also work really well in that you can
put on any plate or bowl or container before you turn the scale on and it will
start at 0 no matter whether you have a little plastic bowl on it which weighs
an ounce or a big glass bowl which weighs 2 pounds.

There is also a button for a tare feature which allows you for example to weigh
your butter, assume you want 200 grams, then you want to add sugar directly
into the butter because normally that is what you do when you bake. You press
the tare button after you have your butter in the bowl and the scale then
resets to 0 and you can add say 100 grams of sugar which just makes it a bit
easier and saves you from using another bowl to weigh it before pouring it into
the bow with the butter.

Interestingly enough my wife says our scale is also a Vox-2, but it still uses
a 9 Volt battery and as far as I know it only speaks English whereas the one
they show on their website now can speak English, Spanish, French and German
and uses four AA batteries. It also says you can adjust the volume which you
can on mine as well, but it's simply a slider switch underneath and it's either
quite loud or just loud and a second switch is also there which allows you to
turn the speaking function off completely if a sighted person wants to use it
with the display and they don't care to hear it talk.

Often Siri features are updated on Apple's servers and it is not always
necessary for an iOS update to be released to fix some issue with Siri.
Asking Siri to identify a song also works again for me.

2022-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That worked for me as well, but the notifications just seem to be slow to go
away or at least they are as far as Voiceover is concerned. If you clear the
notification and go back and forth a few times they will also be gone. Maybe
still good if this were reported to Apple Accessibility as it may just be a
Voiceover thing, I'll make a point to ask somebody to check visually when I
clear a notification and let me know what they see.

Hi.

I have notifications on the lock screen. I flick up to the clear option on the
notification. It’s still there. If I flick up, instead of clear, there’s a
dismiss option. If I activate that option, the notification is gone.

For me a notification sometimes seems to still be there, but if I flick down
nothing happens so it's actually gone but Voiceover still thinks it is there.
Usually if I flick to another notification and back it then sorts Itself out.

Subject: RE: seeking recommendations for kitchen scales and cooking thermometers

My Weigh Vox 3000 | My Weigh | The best digital scales on earth

Measuring whether using cups or a scale is no different exact using a cup is
not very accurate. If you want it to be as accurate as possible especially for
floour you have to spoon the flour into the cup because if you scoop it in then
it gets compressed and instead of the approx. 120 grams which a cup of all
purpose flour should weigh you may have 20% more which makes a huge difference.
If I need 4.5 cups of flour it's actually a lot faster to weigh it than to use
first a 1-cup measurement and then a half cup measurement.
I enjoy cooking but baking even more and I enjoy the precision and the process
(and of course the results).
I don't have that much time to do a lot which is probably good because while I
don't gain weight that easily, I will gain weight if I eat lots of sweets and
besides its not good for you despite how good it seems to be 😂
But for me Christmas without a German Stollen, certain types of cookies and
lots of Marzipan is just not right. Oh, and lets not forget hot mulled wine
with spices.

Wow, precision alright, and power to the talking cooking scale
makers.

it was already obvious that you, Sieghart, were serious and now 100 times even
more so. I spent 6 months in Germany in 1977 when I was still a teenager and
loved it.

I loved the whole ritual of making Feuersangenbowler, but don't
scream if I badly badgered the spelling. It sure gave me a serious buzz and
warmed me up to the very core one night when I came in from the cold and
unsuspecting, was given a cup of it for the first time. We must have prepared
ourselves at another time because the sugar loaf, the pedestal it was placed
on, the saturating it with liquor then setting it on fire then watch while it
dissolved into the bowl was amazing.

Is the Capital One app accessible?

It was suggested that I set up a Capital One 360 Savings account. I've poked

straightforward and accessible. I know I can set up an account for free, but
before I go down that path, I'd like to know if anyone else has used the

I find the app very accessible.

And, they are willing to help where they can over the phone, which is a bit
limited, but we’ve had a savings account with them for over 2 years and while
their interest rates go up and down with the market, they have always paid more
than the traditional banks like Bank of America. Right now, savings is at 2%...

We have a minimal checking account because we already have a good deal
elsewhere for free checks and all that good stuff, but the app covers both and
gives you access to your credit score if that matters.

How accessible is the HEOS app?

2022-09-24 Thread Christopher Chaltain
So, I'm thinking of upgrading my home theater receiver to a Denon, so I'm
wondering how accessible the HEOS app is? I've downloaded the app and run it in
demo mode, and what I can see seems accessible, but there are features I can't
seem to get to like actually controlling things on the receiver like the input
and output devices and zone 1 versus zone 2. Anyone have any experience with
this app and knows how accessible it is?

2022-09-24 Thread wessmith313
What language?  I’m just curious. I don’t know what could be happening, but sometimes I’ll get that on an English website, and it’s because of the markup that they use in their posts, I believe.  If you go into voiceover settings, and turn off, detect languages, does that help?Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 24, 2022, at 9:31 AM, Holly wrote:

Re: Weird Recording Bug

2022-09-24 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
Hey, so I tried recording with dolby On and it definitely improves the sound
quality and there's no clipping, but now I notice a constant mild distortion in
the background, especially in the quieter sections.

My phone is 3 years old — could it just be that the microphone isn't very good?
Or is there some setting I should change in the app?

Here's an unlisted video demonstrating the issue: https://youtu.be/Rt5HZrUfPL4

I did have the countdown setting enabled, which the app says automatically
tries to trim out background noise. Maybe that could be the issue, too?

Thanks,
Brandon

thanks so much for this tip while it is definitely not a fix and I do
hope people continue to report this as a bug or an annoying design
change to restore previous behavior I am grateful for the work-around
and am so glad you shared it with us all as it makes life in iOS 16 much

Thanks once again Holly it and you are appreciated.

showing up in 16, but someone said to do a single finger triple tap to
see the options to mark as completed, etc..
Well, I thought I would try that with a text message, and when I did a

I will try this again with the next text I get, but it has worked

RE: Weird Recording Bug

2022-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Brandon,

I asked my wife to look at the video. She thinks the phone is too close. I
was thinking if you moved it back it might help on the clipping/distortion, but
she says it should be moved back because she cannot see the whole keyboard or
all of you. You get cut off at about your right ear/shoulder.

There may be some settings to adjust the microphone level in the app. I
haven't delved deeply into it, but it also has lots of adjustment features that
can be applied after the recording. It is just more than I need for what
little I record.=, which is mostly spoken word stuff.

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Brandon

Thanks. I probably just nudged the tripod and it got off-center. I had aligned
it properly with Aira yesterday but it's easily moved.

I will check into the settings, thanks.

RE: Weird Recording Bug

2022-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
Well, moving the microphone further back may help for the distortion too.

But, if you know someone with aa 12, 13, or now 14 pro, perhaps they could let
you record something with their phone. Especially with the Camera Video mode
since it will record in stereo and you may find you get a much better sound. I
don't know if the XS utilizes the stereo mic or even if it has them. But, I
know their processing is much better.
Though I do not know if you can turn off the Apple filters on the mic.

Richard
