About GPS systems and their accuracy

2023-03-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
For those who didn't read the thread about the "Differences in iPhone 14
models" here again what I posted regarding GPS accuracy. I wrote this in reply
to a statement Kelly made about having heard that the iPhone 15 Pro may have 1
inch GPS accuracy. In particular he said "it may also have dual channel
satellite navigation, giving location data as accurate as an inch compared to
the 20 feet single channel offers"

One inch accuracy is very difficult to achieve especially in cities between
tall buildings and while a measurement over a long period of time may result in
extremely high accuracy, most consumer devices cannot do this in most
applications or without the euse of additional "augmentation
systems",
here the definition of what that is:

A GPS augmentation is any system that aids GPS by providing accuracy,
integrity, availability, or any other improvement to positioning, navigation,
and timing that is not inherently part of GPS itself.

Another article I read says this "Yes, there are GPS systems that can measure
locations with accuracy up to 1 inch. These systems are known as Real-Time
Kinematic (RTK) GPS systems. They

use a fixed base station and a mobile receiver to calculate highly accurate
positions."

And here a page from the US government website about GPS
accuracy, one highlight
here is this:

It will depend on the quality of your equipment, how many satellites are
visible and processing in your equipment and the quality of the GPS signals
(direct, reflection, interference). As measured by the Air Force that runs the
GPS program, the error across the entire constellation of satellites was 2.1
feet, 95% of the time on 20 April 2021.

Also, I hear sometimes people say the US government deliverately makes the GPS
system less accurate; this is not true as of over 20 years ago, specifically in
2000 then President Bill Clinton put a stop to the so-called "selective
availabbility" which was used throughout the 90's globally to make GPS signals
for civilian use less accurate. On the GPS website it says " The United States
has no intent to ever use Selective Availability again.".

What Kelly referred to as "dual channel satellite navigation is technically
called "dual frequency" or "multi band" and many of the newer Garmin GPS's
including some of Garmin's watches already have this.

Here an excerpt from an explanation from the Garmin website:

What is Dual Frequency/Multi-Band GPS?

Dual-frequency or "Multi-Band" systems use multiple frequency bands and allow
for more consistent tracklogs and improved positioning when using the device in
challenging environments.

This means the receiver tracks more than one radio signal from each satellite
on different frequencies, which can reduce errors caused by environmental
interference.

What Advantages Do Multi-Band Devices Have Over Other Models?

* More consistent tracklogs and improved positioning when using the device in
challenging environments (e.g. around tall buildings in urban canyons as well
as tree cover)

* Can achieve accuracy within about +/- 2 meters or 6 feet under ideal
conditions versus the +/- 3 meters or 10 feet accuracy of other models

* Detect (and reject) reflected satellite signals better than a single
frequency receiver which improves accuracy

* Better equipped to account for and correct errors that can be introduced by
atmospheric effects (e.g. ionosphere errors)

NOTE: Multi-GNSS satellite systems include GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, BeiDou,
and IRNSS (NavIC). Some satellite systems are not available in all areas of the
globe.

I am sure the iPhone 15 Pro will undoubtedly be a fantastic device, but it
seems Apple is differenciating the Pro models more and more from the regular
models and then we have rumours of an iPhone 15 Ultra although I also read that
this may possibly what Apple will call the iPhone 15 Pro Max and they will give
it even more features or make it tougher than the regular iPhone 15 Pro.

I guess we have to wait and see, but don't hold your breath that any iPhone in
the near future will give you 1 inch GPS accuracy especially not in the places
where most people live like cities with tall buildings and many sources of
potential interference. For now the next big reveal will be iOS 17 on Monday,
June 5 which Apple announced today is when WWDC will start. Then we'll wait
another 3 or so months and probably on Tuesday, September 12 or so Apple wil
lhave the fall hardware reveal although most rumours will have been confirmed
at least a few weeks before then.

First of all, I never said I think high-speed data transfers aren't important
for some people. What I said was that I heard Apple is limiting the speed of
the USB-C port to that of what the Lightning port now has.

I am also quite convinced that Apple is working towards an iPhone without any
ports and that just as when they ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack, once they do
this Samsung and others will follow on their heels.

RE: Power Bank?

2023-03-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I assume by powerbank you refer to an expernal battery. As Kelly pointed out,
you can get something small which will recharge an iPhone fully once or maybe
twice if you only charge when you are down to 40%. As to the type it really
makes little difference as all external batteries have one or more USB plug and
you can plug in your regular Lightning cable and use it on any of your iPhones
or you can plug in your Apple Watch charging cable with the round magnetic
charger for the watch on the other end.
The only difference is that larger capacity batteries usually have more than 1
plug and can charge 2 ore more devices at the same time.
Also, if your Apple Watch charger has a USB-C end which means a small plug
almost like a Lightning plug, then you may want to look for a power bank which
has at least one USB-C plug-in. You can get iPhone Lightning charging cables
which also have Usb-C on the other end so ifi you found a battery with just a
single USB-C plug in then that would be something you have to get.
I have a small Anker battery which is sort of like what Kelly described
although I think it is 6000 Mah and definitely a bit fatter, but it's also
older so maybe skinner versions are out there now.
I also have a rather expensive Hyper Juice battery which I think is 26,000 Mah
and it has 4 USB-C plug-ins and it can even charge my Lenovo laptop. But it's
not what you would most likely want to carry around on a daily bases, I often
use it at home to charge various headsets because for something like that you
can literally use it for weeks or months without having to recharge it. I also
pack it when my wife and I go to the Philippines where I might be in places
where sometimes the power is out or unreliable and where it's nice to have a
battery which can recharge both of our phones, Apple Watches and headsets
multiple times.
Anker is a good brand and they have everything from small 3000 Mah batteries to
the large 20,000 or even higher batteries, they are easily available on Amazon
and you get a quality item for a reasonable price.

Hi, Group.
I am looking for a power bank but I don’t know what I should search for.
I want a power bank for my iPhone12, Apple Watch SE and iPhone8.
What should I search for on Amazon, Canada (amazon.ca)?
Thanks!

The iPhone 14 did not get the newest processor like the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro

One thing the Pro models have (apart from better cameras) is the LiDAR

thing to have a phone which has the LiDAR sensor. This means you have to

Seigard, I disagree about the need for high speed data transfers. I

For blind people, they may want to move a motley Crew discography off

Someone can walk around with thick heavy bricks delivering days of
battery power. These big heavy bricks are unnecessary for iPhone
users. As blind people, we would rather walk around with a pocket
battery charger that can fully recharge an iPhone once or twice. The
5,000 mA battery chargers are lightweight and fit into a man’s pant’s
pocket. They are the size of two lighters or a thick tube of lipstick.
My favorite is the Slim 2 charger. It was only $12 US and came with a
charger and carrying case to fit the battery, wall charger, an
connecting cable. It carries enough juice to charge a regular iPhone
twice. If you go with a bigger battery bank, you will need to carry it
around in a bag or backpack.

Power Bank?

2023-03-29 Thread Fazil M.
Hi, Group.

I am looking for a power bank but I don't know what I should search for.

I want a power bank for my iPhone12, Apple Watch SE and iPhone8.

What should I search for on Amazon, Canada (amazon.ca)?

Thanks!

Re: Differences in iPhone 14 models

2023-03-29 Thread CHELA Robles
And I’m also considering Getting a new Apple Watch since my Apple Watch fifth
generation died two weeks before Christmas last year I saved up enough money,
thinking about getting the ultra because of a bigger screen, and the fact that
it has two speakers and tactile buttons. If I type it right if I get it or
rather if I purchase it on April 5 I should have it by my birthday which is
April 6. This is definitely a year of new stuff! Whatever phone model you end
up with, I hope it serves you well. Not everybody can afford the latest and
greatest all the time of everything but I say whatever works best for you. I
hope it works out for you. Good luck.

RE: Differences in iPhone 14 models

2023-03-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It is only cool because it uses a USB-C cable, but it has already been
confirmed that Apple will throddle the speed of the USB-C connection to the
same as the Lightning port.
Anyways, who wants to plug in a cable any more, at least I find wireless
charging is way more convenient and I have a hunch that putting a USB-C port on
the iPhone 15 is just a temporary fix for Apple to comply with the rules n the
European Union and that possible as early as the iPhone 16 in 2024 there simply
won't be a charging port any more at all.
Also, nobody knows if the regular iPhone 15 gets the LiDAR sensor or if Apple
continues to only put that on the Pro phones and most people who predict what
Apple will do already say that again the regular iPhone 15 will not get this
year's latest 3 Nanometer processor and that just as last year, only the Pro
phones get it and the regular iPhone 15 will get last year's processor which is
now in the iPhone 14 Pro.
The fact is that in real life and for day-to-day usage it is pretty hard to
notice the difference anyways. Yes, when I upgraded from my iPhone 11 to the 13
Pro I noticed things were a bit snappier, apps opened a bit faster and all
that, but once you get used to it, you hardly notice it.
For Bill who is coming from an iPhone 8 even going to a 13 Pro whichis what I
would recommend unless he can get a good deal on a 14 Pro, will be a big jump
and big speed increase as well as battery life will be much better.
But you will pay top Dollar for the new phones as you always do and for the
last two upgrades I did, I found going with the previous year's model was a
much better deal and there is little if anything on an iPhone 14 or 14 Pro I
felt was worth it compared to the 13 Pro I got for a very good deal.

I'd honestly wait for the iPhone 15 to come out. Then you'd have USBC charging
which is going to be so cool.

RE: Differences in iPhone 14 models

2023-03-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would highly recommend you get the iPhone 14 Pro. If you are considering the
iPhone 14 you would be better of to see if you can find an iPhone 13 Pro
instead.
The iPhone 14 did not get the newest processor like the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max
did and this is the first time that Apple has not put their latest chip in a
new phone. Basically if you buy an iPhone 14 you get the same processor as the
iPhone 13/13 Pro.
One thing the Pro models have (apart from better cameras) is the LiDAR sensor
which allows features like door detection and so on. I assume as time goes by,
more developers may make use of it so I think it's a good thing to have a phone
which has the LiDAR sensor. This means you have to get a Pro phone, the first
one which had this was the iPhone 12 Pro, when the iPhone 13/13 Pro phons came
out the 13 Pro again had it and not the regular 13 and the same applies to the
14 and 14 Pro, the 14 Pro/Pro Max have the liDAR sensor and the regular 14 and
14 Plus do not. This is why I feel as a blind person you are better off with an
iPhone 13 Pro over a regular iPhone 14. Also you probably get a better deal on
an iPhone 13 Pro, but I know here in Canada they are becoming a bit harder to

Hello,

I also heard that this feature isn’t available if you have Wi-Fi calling turned
on.

Best,
Anna

Except I tried and looked for it during a phone call and I can't see it
anywhere in Control Panel. Is this only supported by the iPhone 14/14 Pro?

Yes, you do need to be in a phone call, then go to the control center, and look
in there. I'm looking forward to trying it out once I make a call.

RE: iPhone, 15 that is coming out.

2023-03-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
First of all anything you hear at this stage are rumours so nobody knows for
sure what all the new things will be the iPhone 15 will have.
One thing is for certain, the sizes will be the same or very similar to the
current models of iPhones in the last few years, e.g. 6.1 inch for the regular
iPhone 15/15 Pro and 6.7 or 6.8 inches for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Plus if
Apple again offers a Plus, the iPhone 14 Plus apparently is not super popular.
There are rumours that a new iPhone SE will be released this spring, but even
here the rumour is that it will be larger than all the previous SE models and
the last iPhone Mini was the iPhone 13 Mini and I have a feeling Apple may not
make an iPhone 15 Mini since apparently the larger phones are the more popular.
I think a large reason why the smaller iPhone SE phones did reasonably well was
because of their lower price and not so much because of their smaller size;
this maybe a consideration for some people, but I have a feeling that if you
looked at all iPhone users that this group is 10% or less.
But in the end you simply have to wait until it is released to know for sure or
at least until shortly before when most rumours are more or less confirmed and
become fact.

Hello all,

What are all the features about this phone? Also, will it fit in the persons
pockets? Hopefully it’s smaller than the size of the bigger ones. Referring to
the plus phones. I would want it to be smaller than that. Where it would fit in
a pocket and not fall out.

Thanks for reading regarding this matter.

Why are you asking this?

Do you already know what is under the Christmas tree in december of this year?

Just wait wait and wait till Apple releases the models and makes the

RE: please follow me DO ALL complain with Apple accessibility dictation feedback bug still not solved

2023-03-29 Thread davycuppens
It cannot be reproduced all the time but it helps as you have been dictating
several phrases in a row. Suddenly, after you stop dictating, you magic tap and
here a sound and then normally as it should be, the tekst is read to you, that
tekst that you have been dictating. In most cases this doesn't work, even VO is
crashing and you have to close the app, reopen it, search fort he edit field
and find or correct there your dictated tekst. It is really crab and
frustrating behaviour and the most tramendous bug ever on ios.
Moreover in some cases stopping the dictation results in the playback of music
a complaint which I have heard dozens of times in the last 2 or 3 months.

Hello all,

What are all the features about this phone? Also, will it fit in the persons
pockets? Hopefully it’s smaller than the size of the bigger ones. Referring to
the plus phones. I would want it to be smaller than that. Where it would fit in
a pocket and not fall out.

Thanks for reading regarding this matter.
