The app is not without its fair share of annoyances; you can't import from OPML files and you can't sync with Google Reader, only import from it. Where the app shines though is its amazingly fast push alerts for new articles. In my experience the lag is well under fifteen minutes and probably closer to five, which rivals paid apps which can often take an hour or two to provide the latest push alert. My Windows 8 PC is set to refresh every fifteen minutes, and Simple RSS's push alerts are beating it every time. It's pretty simple, easy to navigate, and has decent sharing features. There is a message about double tapping the OK button to get started once you select New Conversation. The person using the braille device should do that. When the sighted person is instructed to tap once before typing, there is no visible keyboard until the blind user hits space bar plus dots 1,4,6. Then it is pretty straight forward from there. Re: Apple's commitment to accessibility [was Re: a warning to voice over users concerning IOS 6]
If Apple will continue as is on naking its products accessible is exactly wasI was asking myself awhile ago, especially with the talk these past few days on here about the App store breaking Voiceover accessible, as I asked myself what could I expect on ny next IPhone in Febuary of 2014 when this IPhone's contract expires, and seeking a new IPhone comes into the picture? As long as the IPhone continues to be accessible for us the blind, I've had such awesome experience with so much one can accomplish(once passing the frustration phase all new IUsers go through) that I wouldn't go back to Nokia with Talks! Enviado desde mi iPhone El 17/09/2012, a las 23:15, David Chittenden dchitten...@gmail.com escribió: Hello, First, don't confuse timelines. Original Android accessibility was only with physical buttons and keyboards, and this was after VO was released on the iPhone. Before VO was released on the iPhone, it was known that accessibility was not very possible on a touch-screen. In other words, the limited possibilities for touch-screen access were obviously impossible and expensive, so the ADA was satisfied because it was not practical to have blindness accessibility. The possible access was limited and easily arguably too expensive, so meaningless. Therefore, businesses and government were only required to provide a partially accessible alternative. This meant, the blind person would get a basic cell phone with buttons that could be felt, and if necessary, a laptop or netbook running a screen reader, or an accessible note taker such as BrailleNote or PACMate. Code Factory did not make enough of an impact to change the government register (yes, I checked in 2008), so slight accommodation was perfectly acceptible and met the law. Windows Phone Seven became inaccessible, yet Microsoft did not lose any government contracts over it. Therefore, we can easily argue that the lack of accessibility in the mobile phone market meant no companies would lose government contracts. The TeleCommunications Act said at least an entry level usably accessible phone needs to be provided by each carrier. This does not mean each phone manufacturer was required to make an accessible version, and the provided phone just needed to be useable, not all of its advanced features need to be accessible. I did clarify this information with an accessibility law specialist in 2008. As for the case of the Kindle, this happened in 2010 at Arizona State University. ASU required Kindles for certain classes and did not provide any accessible alternatives. Amazon could not argue that accessibility was impossible in a handheld device because, as was successfully argued, Apple's VoiceOver made the iPhone and the iPad fully accessible. Therefore, Amazon developed an accessible Kindle. It should be noted that the accessible Kindle has buttons and no touch screen, and the newest models, according to information I have recently received, are not accessible. Even Blackberry phones were inaccessible and Rim did not lose any government or business contracts because of it. Rim started having other problems, but that was not related, in any way, to their lack of accessibility. The fact is, Apple completely changed the paradigm around accessibility, and they are still significantly ahead of the competition. Will this continue? Only time can answer that question. However, Apple's pattern since 2005 speaks for itself, and gives me high confidence that it will continue in to the foreseeable future. The only other company which I have similar confidence about at this time is Google's Android, and my confidence is not as high. I could definitely see a situation where Apple would be losing sales of iPhones and iPads to small businesses, governments agencies and educational institutions if Android were an accessible option and IOS hadn't been made accessible. Of course, Apple deserves the credit for being ahead of that curve and doing it in such an innovative way. I'm not sure Windows Phone 7 is much of a counter example at the moment. First of all go to http://www.visionaustralia.org/atpodcasts/ where you'll find especially the Iphone/Ipod tutorials which are great! They gave me clarification on little details and also got me to explore and not be afraid to learn things on my own. Afterwards I'd recommend the Apple Vis site which also has great info! It's address is http://applevis.com Now as for activating VoiceOver, usually if the phone is right out of the box and not set up yet, do a triple click home button; if not, as I did, ask the store implyees to activate VoiceOver for you by going to Settings; General; Accessibility and click on VoiceOver and the phone should start talking! Siri is used more as an extra feature but diesn'doesn't replace VoiceOver. Hope this helps and again welcome to the list! You'll learn a lot! RE: iOS 6 - 40 features you will care about, was: IOS 6 and Voice Over
Wow! Too bad Iphones 3gs like mine wn't get along with Ios6! So I guess I'll just have to continue reading up on your experiences on some of these features! -Mensaje original- De: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] En nombre de Sieghard Weitzel Enviado el: domingo, 16 de septiembre de 2012 10:40 a.m. Para: viphone@googlegroups.com Asunto: iOS 6 - 40 features you will care about, was: IOS 6 and Voice Over Hello Avnish and others, I haven't spend too much time on Google, but a quick search about iOS 6 accessibility did produce quite a few hits, here is one I read. Many of the 40 features we already heard about, but it's a nice comprehensive list and while the author doesn't go into details, he does mention Voiceover improvements as well as other accessibility improvements. I believe Kimber recently asked about how she can make the alarm play a particular song, well, item 35 in the list indicates that this will be an iOS 6 feature. I also hope all you who preordered the iPhone 5 have not neglected to place orders for your favourite BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar or Land Rover to take advantage of Siri in-car integration, after all, you may have to wait quite long to get just the colour you want! I'm just ticked off that this won't work with my vintage Rolls Royce Silver Dawn *smile*. I usually have my finger on the keyboard letter when it does this, and when I lift my finger it will speak the previous letter a second time and place it in whatever I am writing. I then have to delete that letter and start forward again only to have it happen in another couple of words. Is there a setting I can turn off? I have autocorrection on. Could this be the problem? ABout writing Spanish letters on Iphone
HI guys: I've got a Spanish Iphone 3gs with the Spanish keyboard in which the way I write Spanish accented letters is get to the letter, do a double tap and hold; flick left/right to get to the accent I want and let go; I ask this because in a podcast I heard that the accent is written by holding on the letter, but why doesn't this method work on my Iphone? wanting to be congruent in Email on Iphone and Pc
HI guys: This morning I thought I could advance some and from my Iphone I deleted a bunch of emails or read others, however here on Pc using Outlook07 not only the rest of the emails downloaded, but also the ones I thought I'd deleted via the iphone! Is there a way so that I can be congruent in emails so that the emails I check on Iphone and delete from there, when I turn on pc and Open Outlook07 I'll see the same state of emails, thus being of some use the nearly half hour I spent on Iphone working through the emails? Thanks for ideas. How to navigate by headings on Iphone?
HI guys: Using an Iphone 3gs with Ios 5.5.1 In Newsline or other newspapersmagazine aps as well as with safari, how do I navigate via headings like in Jaws you'd do h to go to the next one and Shift+h for the previous headings? I thought I understood that the rotor had a move to heading but can't find it! Within Newsline, or Safari when wanting to move by heading, I only hear Characters, Words, Lines, the Language option I added in to switch from Spanish to English, something that I think in English would translate to form Controls, but where or how to get to move by headings? TomTom also has such an app although I would say most people on the list use Navigon or Motion X GPS. Sendero is also working on developing what one would believe is a Trekker like app for the iPhone, the project is funded by Seeing Eye so I think money isn't a problem and with Sendero's expertise I would expect such an app to be fairly promising. Of course nobody knows what it will cost, my guess is it could be anywhere from $50 to $150. $50 to $80 would put it around what navigon costs or a bit higher, $100 or above would be expensive for an app, but if it really offered a Trekker like experience on a stabil platform like the iPhone I would have no problems spending the money, it's still a lot cheaper than the $800 one has to put on the table for a Breeze, when I bought my Trekker Maestro in November 2007 it was $2,000, what a joke, but back then we didn't know better and the accessible iPhone hadn't happened yet, in fact, the iPhone only had just happened. For more information I suggest you either search the archives to read up about what's been discussed on the list already, you can also go to www.Applevis.com where you find some good reviews and I also recommend the Ariadne website at www.AriadneGPS.eu where you find a nice 6-part series of Podcasts about Ariadne. I tried Sandero GPS look around but it was not as helpful as it could be anything that compares to one having a trekker or trekker breeze in their hands but for the iPhone thanks Marissa Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Hi list, I would like to know how Boxcar works and I would like to hear your opinions about this app. I have read somewhere that it drains a lot of battery. I hope I won't sound as a silly person asking this but is it necessary to have Carbox runing in background when I want to get the notifications? Thank you in advance for your posts. RE: I'm Just Not Getting the Hang of Flexy.
OK is flexi available to be able to type in Spanis, or not yet? Sounds interesting! Debbie, thanks for having the guts to admit this; I feel the same as you. I have come to the conclusion that I simply have not practiced typing enough on the iPhone. With BT keyboards and Siri it's easy to avoid typing on the phone. Ive gotten somewhat better but I', still not a proficient typist on the phone. I think that as I force myself to practice more on the phone my skills on Fleksy will improve. I wish I could get the hang of Fleksy. Do you all use it in portrait or landscape mode? I almost never get a word in the list that i intended to type. I can't figure what I need to do to practice. _ From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Regina Alvarado Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2012 9:35 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: More I use Fleksy, more I like it! I really like Fleksy also, and I really like the button in the lower right of the screen for new line as every time I swiped to the right and held my finger to get the new line it put a period on the end of the word I just typed. Sometimes I did not want the period as I had put in a comma or a colon. Has anyone noticed this? Perhaps it is my fingers! On another note, how do you do a wink and a smile with punctuation! Curious minds and all of that! It is fun to type the Fleksy way. I was looking around for the ampersand sign and came across the (at) shortcut. Flicking down on the (at) brings up a bunch of email suggestions like @gmail, or @yahoo. That is pretty cool! I was also successful in doing the smile wink via punctuation. I like that there is the option to use the lower right button for new line. One question I have is, how do I enter a space. For example, when I entered the symbol, I noticed there was no space between it and the following word. Anyway, I just wanted to add in my positive comments on this app. I'm pleased more than I expected. I had fast fun composing a Facebook status via Fleksy. :) Traci Sent by Macbook Air Mail -- -- -- -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
