For those using a hardware keyboard with IOS11

2017-09-24 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,

Most of the function playback controls work now if you add the FN key to the
function keys.

I hope this rearranging of the keyboard commands by Apple is still a work in
progress.

Hi,
I grabbed the below list of shortcut keys from the hotkeys section of iTunes

You can use keyboard shortcuts to quickly accomplish many tasks in iTunes.
To find the shortcuts for common commands, look in the iTunes menus, or use

Many items in the iTunes window (for example, songs and column headings)

right-click the item.

To turn on full keyboard navigation, choose Edit Preferences, click
General, and select Enable full keyboard navigation.

Some screen readers override keyboard combinations built into iTunes; check
the screen reader documentation for instructions on customizing key
combinations.

When I am on a call using IOS8 I notice that in the App Switcher, In-Call
Service is running. It removes itself after the call is ended but I don't
remember seeing it before. Does anyone have info about this?

Dear listers
Apologies if this has already been covered but I’ve not been able to read every
post recently. I’ve just downloaded 8.0.2 and the following still appears to be
an issue; when using Siri with earpods plugged in it doesn’t hear what I say. I
have to hold the phone near my mouth as it appears that the phone speaker is
the one being used even though earphones are plugged in.
Another issue is with Downcast where the commands for next/previous episodes
(for example double click and hold to go to next episode) doesn’t seem to be
working since the upgrade. Of course this last could be a Downcast issue but
wondering if it’s just me.
Thanks – Robin

Flick right with one hinger to Export To and double-tap.

I've tried this with two different documents.
I consider this a significant bug.

RE: Using Hey, Seri

2014-09-20 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
The Hey Siri feature can be turned on or off under Setting/General/Siri
and the use of a battery pack does fool Siri into thinking you are charging
your iDevice. Yes, the feature does only work with an external power source
such as a battery, pack or charger connected.
Apparently the feature will use a significant amount of juice but I haven't
yet tested to see how long a pack will last under those conditions.

For those who do not know, you can just say hey Seri when the

I installed this program on Win7 with the latest JFW but find it totally

Maybe the mac version (if there is one) will be more friendly.

The program is called iFunbox and works on a Windows computer. I'm not sure
if there's a Mac version, though. I plan to check this out. I have a few
BARD books on my iPhone, with lots of bookmarks, and I'd hate to lose them.
I've been hearing contradictory information as to whether BARD
books/bookmarks are backed up, even with an encripted backup, so I wanted to
give this a shot. It doesn't require jailbreaking, at least not for most
things, as far as I've been able to gather.

Thanks,
Ari

Hello Shai,

I definitely think you should turn auto brightness off and, unless you
yourself have useable vision or have a sighted person who often uses the
phone I would turn brightness to 0.
You can always turn it up if needed, this will be very much easier next week
when iOS 7 comes out where you can simply touch an item in the status bar,
swipe up with 3 fingers to bring up the new Control Center where you have
the brightness settting easily accessible.
If you are concerned somebody reads over your shoulder where they shouldn't,
you can still turn the screen curtain on, it won't extend your battery life,
but it shouldn't hurt it, either.

Sieghard

Hello Sieghard,
Thanks for checking in on this. Would it be good then to turn screen curtain
off, set brightness down to 0 and turn autobrightness off to keep that
setting?
Also, what about if a sighted person were to use the phone, should that
setting be left on? Would one still get the same affect of increased battery
life?
Thanks in advance for your response

Hello Listers,

As has been pointed out before, the screen curtain does not help extend
battery life. I wrote to Apple Accessibility and ask for an official
statement regarding screen curtain and brightness and below is the reply:

Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2013 7:45 AM

Subject: [415306] Screen curtain and battery draining

Hello, Sieghard.

Dimming the screen is the correct means of regulating backlight power
consumption for best battery life between charges. Officially:

[turning] screen curtain 'on' has no effect on battery. Dimming the screen
does effect the battery.

The curtain function is a means to obscure screen content quickly, hence the
three-finger triple-tap activates it.

Please feel welcome to share this information with your discussion group.

Apple Accessibility

Hey all! First, I really enjoy this friendly, smart group a lot.
I'm going to be involved in a group meeting where we'll be talking with
someone in another city. Some people in
the group might have difficulty hearing my iPhone speaker, so I'm looking
for a way to conduct our
phone call using a speaker that might have a bit more volume and depth to
it. Any ideas?

Much obliged!

RE: bluetooth headset

2013-08-12 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hello May,
The HBS-700 LG Tone
Is great, Amazon has them for around $50 most of the time, what I like is
that's basically a set of very comfortable earbuds on a sort of neck strap.
Basically you just put either or both buds on their magnetic holders on each
end when not in use. The headset is so light that you almost forget you are
wearing the thing.
It has a bass boost and handles Siri, voiceover and other sounds and has 10
hours per charge.

You can check it out at:

RE: Bluetooth on/off app?

2013-08-02 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
I have two apps for controlling Bluetooth, the files used are:

OnOff 1.0.ipa

And

Bluetooth 1.0.ipa

I hope this helps a little as there seem to be a few similarly named apps in
the Appstore.

I have it, but I cannot tell you what the name of it is. It does not say in
the app itself, nor provide a developer. I have searched my purchase history
and do not find it there.

If you have any advice how to find apps like this, once you use or have
purchased and want to find again, I sure would appreciate it. It seems a
complete mess when you look through the list. Especially frustrating when
there isn't what you are using currently listed in there.

Hi,
The ability to turn BT other features on and off via Siri is one of the
coolest features coming to an iDevice near us.
Having this functionality in the next IOS release will really be a battery

I believe that app was pulled from the app store.

But, if you search the archives of this list I suspect you will find the
name of it and whether I'm remembering correctly about it being pulled.

You could also search the app store for terms like Bluetooth off, or
Bluetooth on/off, etc.

If you have a device that supports Siri, it sounds like iOS 7 will allow
Siri to do this for you.

RE: Can I put IPhone Apps on A thumb Drive? What folder in iTunes would I Copy them into?

2013-07-23 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi Wren,
You can look for the .ipa files in your iTunes library and copy them to
another place for safe keeping.
Then (if you need to copy them back to your iTunes library, on a new
computer or if you undergo Windows re-installation for example) you can add
them from the iTunes file menu.

Hi All, and thank you for the help
I a am going to upgrade my iPhone to an iPhone if it comes out. IS there any
way to put my apps on a thumb drive in case something happens to my
computer?
I know that the apps can be transferred from one iPhone to another, but as
I have been having computer problems I wanted to find out if there is a way
to store the apps separately. Also if they are on a thumb drive how would I
get them back into ITunes? I should say which folder in iTunes would I copy
them into? If this is too complicated, or if it has been discussed before
please write me off list. Thank you all again.
God Bless,

RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones

2013-07-22 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
There is a difference in terminology here. The ring tone with ATT as I've
said can be just under 40 seconds. How long the carrier waits before sending
the call off to Voice Mail is a different animal and apparently you can
change the standard four rings to a higher number by calling your carrier
and requesting that change in many cases.

Hi, the length of the ring tone may depend on your carrier. Four instance
ATT only allows 30 seconds at the most before your voicemail turns on. Just
a thought. Don't know much about this thing. God bless, when
