RE: VO mispronunciation

2016-01-25 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. No, it is the native apple app. It is just the app name I seem to have
the problem with. When I go into the app and where the word calander
appears, it reads it correctly. If and when I use the app switcher, it
still gives me that weird title. It is strange it does it on my iPhone 6
and also on the iPhone 5c. It might be there is an incompatibility with
something else on the phone that I'm unaware of. Walter.

Where do you encounter this? Is it on the native Calendar app or when you
come across the word calendar elsewhere? On my old iPhone 5S, my new 6S Plus
and on my wife's iPhone 6 the calendar app is announced and pronounced
correctly. If this is a third party Calendar app then Voiceover will read
whatever the developer put in the accessibility label.

Hi guys. I have a curious problem, it in no way impacts on the function of
the phone but I don't understand why VO does what it does.

VO does not pronounce "calendar" properly. When I do a character by
character check, the spelling is correct but VO does not say it correctly.
What I hear is; and this is phonetic is "toy=lhp calanderkapp.$ and this
makes no sense. Does anybody know how to correct this, it isn't critical
but I'd rather change it if I could but first I need to know what causes the
problem. Walter.

A lot of mobile carriers offer you an option to send free SMS
messages from your computer for free. Depending on the carrier, you'll be
able to send text messages to other users of that carrier's services, or
even users of other networks. So just go to your carrier's website, log into
your account, find the option for texting, and send the text message from
your computer.

Hi Walther,

Are you talking about home screens? If so, you can swipe right to left with 3
fingers to move from home screen 1 to 2, 2 to 3 etc. To go back swipe left to
right. You can also touch just above the dock where you would hear something
like “page 1 of 4” (if you have four home screens) and you can swipe up with
one finger to go from 1 to 2, swipe up again to go from 2 to 3 etc. Swipe down
to go back when focus is on that control.

I suggest you arrange your apps with all the most important and most used apps
on home screen 1. I prefer not to have folders on my first home page just
because as I said, for me this is where all my most used apps are including 4
Apple apps (App Store, Calculator, Camera and Settings) and I want to get to
them as quickly as possible.

Depending on how many apps you have, you can have another page full of apps on
home screen 2 or you could make folders on that page with multiple apps in each
folder, e.g. Utilities, Navigation, Travel etc.

Once again this is just how I do things, I put all Apple stock apps on my last
two home screens, in my case I only have two home screens with home screen 2
having some apps as well as some folders. Home screen 3 has all the Apple stock
apps I may use from time to time like Clock, Notes, Podcasts and so on.

Apple apps I am likely not to use like Game Centre, Tips, Stocks etc. I put on
the very last home page.

Everybody is different in how they like to organize things, others may prefer
to have all apps they don’t use much in a folder. Of course you can also get to
apps like Clock, Calculator or Camera pretty quickly by opening the Control
Centre and then you have them across the bottom of the screen.

Alternatively, and I also use this a lot, you can access apps which aren’t on
your first or second home screen by adding handwriting to the rotor. Then when
y ou are on any home screen, all you have to do is turn the rotor once which
should put it on handwriting, then draw the first letter or two on the screen
and a list of apps appears, you can swipe down through the list with a 2-finger
swipe down. For example, if I want Photos or Podcasts, I can just draw a “P” on
the screen, in my case this will give me the following list of apps:

Paprika (a recipe manager app)

Parcel (a package tracking app)

Phone

Photos

Podcasts

I can quickly swipe down with 2 fingers if I want Photos or Podcasts or I could
also draw an “H” or “O” and all I would have left after the “H” would be
“Phone” and “Photos” and after the “O” only Podcasts would be left. Once I have
only the app left I want or once I swipe down to the app I want I can just
activate it with a double tap. Once you practice this a bit it’s super easy and
super fast and you don’t have to remember on what home screen or in what folder
a particular app is located.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi. OK, I think I'm getting the hang of it but it seems to work a little
different from what has been explained to me so far. Here's what I've ended up
doing; Go to messages and open the text thread. work down until I find a text
I want deleted. Once found flick up and more appears and I double tap that.
Doing this seems to make that text selected and I can now work down double
tapping messages I want deleted. Once I've done that then I can go to the
bottom and double tap delete and I'm asked to confirm. I'm also asked if I'm
sure I want to delete 2,3, 5 or 9 messages, whichever is the case and a double
tap does the job. I'm not told though that the messages I double tap are
slected, I just have to assume they are. Thanks to all who helped, I think
I've got the mastery of it.. now for my next problem... LOL. Walter.

A little clarification, when you double tap on the More option, you'll
be dropped back into your list of messages with the current message
selected for deletion. If you now double tap the delete button at the
bottom of the screen then the message will be deleted. If you want to
delete additional messages then just double tap them. When you hit the
delete button at the bottom of the screen all of the messages you double
tapped will be deleted. The only trick here is that you don't know which
messages are marked for deletion, but if you remember the one you
started with is already marked and you just double tap the other
messages you want to delete then you'll be good. I do this all of the
time, and although it did take some practice and getting used to, it
does work.

Hello Walter,

Ah! Your question really takes me back to the old Windows Mobile 5.x days.

The simple answer to your question is that you cannot unthread text messages in
the native iOS app. Furthermore, you cannot move individual messages into what
we old-timers would think of as a native iOS text message folder.

I know, I know. You would think that an operating system, sophisticated
enough to give us on-the-fly turn-by-turn directions from almost anywhere on
the planet, would allow for such basic functionality but, as yet, it does not;
at least, not natively.

Subject: Saving and archiving text messages

Hi All. I have a few text messages I would like to archive and save. As it
stands each time I get a text message from a particular company it is added to
a conversation, or should I say other text messages from that same source. For
example; I'm with Vodafone and have a number of text messages from them but
each time a new message from them comes in, it is added to a long list of other
text messages I got from them, I open the message and the oldest is at the top
and I have to go all the way down to find the latest. How can I change that
that each message is shown in it's own right. Once I've accomplished that then
I would like to archive and save some important messages. Some messages are
just promotional messages that I would delete but if I delete one, it would
seem I delete the lot. So 1. Howe do I stop messages being grouped in this
fashion and are displayed in their own right. 2. how do I archive a
particular message and save it, and to where can I save it? With my old Nokia
there was an option to send the message to a particular folder that I was able
to create but I don't know if that is possible with the iPhone, the iPhone 6 is
what I have. I would like to archive and save in a safe location some
important text messages but I need your help to know how to do this. With
thanks. Walter.

And here is another article that explains again - and maybe better how to
delete individual messages from a thread.

Hi. Yes, one would have thought that the ability to move and safely store
important messages would have been a basic feature. After all, folk are using
their phones for all sorts of things such as on line shopping and of course one
gets confirmation messages such as I do with my mobile provider and these
messages are important legally so it would stand to reason that they should be
kept in a safe part of the phone for future use and retrieval. I'm new to
iPhones but I think this a backward step. To balance things though, I can do
more with the smart phone than I could with my old nokia so; swings and
round-abouts. Walter.

RE: Saving and archiving text messages

2015-11-07 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. Thank you. I think somebody mentioned that procedure yesterday, can't
remember who nor what list as there has been a lot of help provided. I did a
little practice last evening; I had a friend text me a couple of times and I
replied twice so there was 4 messages in the group, 2 from her and 2 I sent in
reply. I tried that method you have described and it worked but not with the
particular message I wanted to delete. So, this will work but one has to be
so careful that the wrong message isn't deleted. The unfortunate thing is when
you are asked to confirm the message, you can't see the message it refers to so
you've gotta be very sure in advance you have the right one and I guess that
will come with practice and a lot of patients. I won't attempt the groups with
the important messages in them until I get the mastery of it though. Thanks
for your help and all others who pitched in to help, it is appreciated.
Walter.

Hi Walter again,

I've had some time to experiment with messages thread on my iphone and I have
at least found a quick way of pairing down a message thread to the ones you
wish to keep. Open a message thread, and flick to the message in the thread
which you may not wish to keep. Then set the rotor to action (which is usually
already there by default but it doesn't hurt to check), and then swipe up or
down until you hear "more". Double-tap and a dialog will appear with an option
to delete just this one text message in the thread. At least you will be able
to reduce the number of messages in the thread to the essential ones.

Hope this will help.

RE: Bus Stops

2015-10-29 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. Right, I'm afraid I can't help you on this occasion as I'm in the UK but I
understand Apple has included transit information for some locations in there
maps in 9 and that might help you. In the UK there is an app called Travel
Line GB. This app has a list of every bus stop in the UK. The app locates you
and lets you know what your nearest bus stops are and how far they are from
your location. It also tells you which busses stop at that stop and if you
click on live arrivals it will tell you what bus and number is due and at what
time and how far away it is. There is much more to this app but I would think
that there would be something similar for the USA, if not nationally then at
least on a state by state basis. Walter.

RE: GPS And Data Usage

2015-10-24 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. I find that apple maps on my phone is more accurate than the Trekker
Breeze plus and also it is faster reacting. With Blindsquare I get informed
that the GPS accuracy is 5 meters whaere as the Trekker is stated to be 10
meters. The advantage with the Trekker is it will tell you if a junction is on
your left or on your right, Blind Square doesn't do that. Walter.

Any GPS app for your iPhone will use data from your plan. Many other GPS apps
will not give you the detailed information your use to with Trekker such as
type of street crossing such as G Street crossing H street 4 way crossing. The
GPS reciver in iPhone is ok but no match for your Trekker. That all having
been said, it never hurts to have a backup GPS incase you forget to take
Trekker along and find yourself up the creek with out somebody else to paddle

RE: GPS And Data Usage

2015-10-24 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. The new Trekker Breeze plus was released back in May and had the latest
maps installed. However I find that the Trekker will take a little time to
acquire satellites and sometimes fails and needs to be turned off and then back
on, whereas my phone will locate me accurately (even in doors) within seconds.
Having said that, the phone has the advantage of Cellular triangulation which
will help it's accuracy. Walter.

One huge advantage of most GPS apps is that they use online maps which are
constantly updated. How old is the most recent Trekker map update, at best they
are released once a year if I remember correctly.

I also would hazard a guess and say that the iPhone's GPS receiver is very good
and accurate and as a matter of fact probably a lot newer and more sensitive
than that in the Trekker. The days when external GPS receivers were required
because those in the old Nokia or Windows Smartphones from 8 or 10 years ago
were not nearly of the same quality are in my opinion over. In fact, ever since
the iPhone 4S the GPS receiver does not only support GPS but also the worldwide
Russian Glonass satellite system. This is also a feature of pretty much all
Garmin handheld GPS models and results in faster satellite acquisition, better
coverage and more accuracy.

Sieghard

RE: GPS And Data Usage

2015-10-23 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. OK, I'm new to iPhone and blindsquare but I have a data package and as you
do when you get a new thingy you tend to use it a lot. I used my Blindsquare
and apple maps for much longer than 45 minutes and over a month, I had only
used 78mg of data. I actually have a 10gig data package but it looks like I
won't use anything close to even 10 percent of that. When I was chatting with
various providers and I asked how long a 2gig data allowance would give me and
she said around 1,000 hours but I guess that would depend on what you intend
doing. However using those figures as a basis to work with, if you used your
data for 16 hours a day for a 31 day month, you wouldn't reach 500mg. You
would reach 496mg but as I said, it would just depend on what you are doing.
Walter.

Hi, all.

I usually use the Trekker Breeze as a GPS, but I'm interested in trying some
of the paid GPS apps like Blind Squared or the Seeing Eye GPS.

How do these apps manage data? For example, how much data would I use for a
45 minute walk around a semi residential/business neighborhood?

I have Verizon Wireless as my cell carrier in the U.S. I have a good plan
as far as minutes and texting is concerned, but only 500 mb of data each

2015-10-21 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi all. OK then, here's my very first question on this list.

I have asked this before on other lists and the answer I got will probably
be the answer you will give.

When on a call and needing to dial in digits for the menu system; 1 for
this, 5 for that and * for something else. When I move the phone away from
my ear the speaker is supposed to kick in and access to the keypad is
allowed. However it doesn't always happen that way and when trying to find
the correct number the automated service will say "sorry, I didn't recognise
that number". If I'm calling my bank for example I need an 11 digit

RE: Stop force closing apps on your iPhone, it's not making it run faster or last longer

2015-10-21 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. I would imagine that some apps need to be kept running such as GPS apps or
transit apps, assuming you are traveling otherwise it is unnecessary to keep
them running. Walter.

Maybe so and maybe no. I have read articles like this before and while this may
be correct theoretically, I think what the author does not consider is that not
all apps are created equal. How often have you seen something in the What's New
section of an app that menbtions the developer has fixed a memory leak or fixed
something which caused excessive use of battery power or they fixed something
which caused the app to remain active in the background. I have seen all of
these in the last 5 years at some point or another so all it takes is a
developer who hasn't done a good job with their code and of course removing the
offending app from the app switcher will fix this. Therefore I happily continue
to waste 10 or 20 seconds of my valueable time once or twice a day to force
quit the apps I don't use. For the amount of time it took the author to write
this article and post it, he could have probably closed apps on his phone once
a day for years to come especially since I think a sighted person can swipe up
and close multiple or even all apps at once.

Regards,
Sieghard

Mass deletion of emails from iPhone or iPad

2015-10-21 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi all. nearly a year ago I was given an iPhone 5c to use as part of the
work I was involved in with a national charity. I really didn't use it very
much, just played around with it and used my old nokia as I normally would.
When we got the phone up and running and I launched my email app, 500,000
unread emails showed up, well, it was nearly 500,000, something like
495,000. This was a nightmare to deal with and I looked on line for a
solution. What is below is what I found. In truth if you have some usable
sight this should work for you but I don't and it was a bit more difficult
but I did manage to delete around 150 and even 200 emails at a time. In the
end I went to my ISP's web mail and deleted them from there. However the
procedure below might be of interest to you and I hope it will be of help to
some. Walter.

How to delete ALL mail messages from iPhone/iPad in one step

 by Adrian Segar

Yes, there is a way to delete all your unwanted iPhone/iPad emails from the
Mail app in one operation! No more left-swipe:tap Trash for every individual
message. No more Edit: tap the single open circle next to every individual
message and finally tapping Trash. And you don't need to jail break your
device.

If you leave your iDevice on for a few days and come back to find a few
hundred messages on it that you've already downloaded elsewhere this trick
will save you time and irritation. I didn't discover the method-it's far
from obvious-but found it on one of many Apple discussion threads bemoaning
this irritating hole in Mail functionality.

It works! I present to you this great tip from shashbasharat found on
MacRumors (slightly edited for clarity).

How to delete or move ALL emails at once in non-jail broken ipad or iphone

It took me weeks of research to figure out finally how to decode this yet
another secretive secret of apple. There is a perfect way of deleting ALL
emails at once without jailbreaking your iphone or ipad.and here it is:

Open InboxEditMark AllMark As Read [Added May 21, 2014 by
Adrian; this extra step makes the difference between success & failure for
some.]

Open InboxEdit Check/select the top message; it will highlight
the move button.

Press and hold the move button and uncheck the message that you had
checked earlier.

Lift all your fingers off from the ipad screen and leave it alone. Wait
until all your messages pile up on the right hand portion of the screen (in
ipad); iphone will give you the actual number of emails it has selected for
the action. Now they are just waiting for your command to be moved ALL at
once.

Choose trash to delete all of them or any other folder where u want to
move them, like one piece. Remember this will replicate your action on the
server so you will ACTUALLY move them or delete them on the server and not
just the ipad.

Once you have moved all messages to the trash you can either leave them
there for the scheduled cleaning or empty it right away by doing this: go to
trash folder and touch Edit. The Delete All button shows up at the bottom of
the screen. Hit it! You're done!

If you do not see the effects of your actions on the server make sure you
have enabled your email accounts for such actions.

Tips:

1. Please give enough time (could take up to several minutes depending the
number of emails to be moved) for the emails to be selected for the move.
Your screen will become unresponsive while all emails are being packaged.
Once emails are ready, in ipad, you will see them zoomed out on the right
hand side of the screen, and in iphone you will see the message showing you
the actual number of messages that have been selected.

2. Avoid purging very large number of emails, the mail app might freeze or
crash. If your inbox has thousands of emails change your sync settings in
mail settings to fill lesser number of emails in your inbox.

3. [Added Jul 20, 2014 by Adrian] Many people have reported needing to
repeat the above procedure several times before it succeeds. (I too have
found this to be necessary a few times on my iPhone but not on my iPad-go
figure.) So my final tip is to repeat the procedure 3-4 times if the mail
doesn't disappear the first time. In my experience, if your messages
disappear momentarily and then reappear, repeating the procedure will
eventually make them stay deleted for good.

Hi Ann. Thank you. I was fortunate to get the 128 gig version as it was the
last one the apple store had in stock. I understand they are not offering the
128gig 6 anymore in the iPhone 6 but the highest is the 64gig. I suspect they
are keeping the 128 gig versions as a lure for the iPhone 6s. Walter.

RE: New Member introduction

2015-10-19 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Mama. Thanks much for the welcome and the sub addresses. I'm only waiting
for approval of Peel the Apple and then I should be on enough Apple orientated
lists to answer my questions. Walter.

Hi to all. I am a new member to this list and thought I'd introduce myself
briefly. My name is Walter Ramage and I live in east Central Scotland (That's
about 400 miles north of London). I have in the last month or two purchased an
iPhone 6 128 gig and have mastered some procedures but I'm by no means a
competent iPhone user and so, I will no doubt be calling upon the expertise of
list members to resolve my questions. Walter
