Yelp for iOS updated with in-app support for Apple Pay checkout

Popular iOS app Yelp has today been updated with a notable addition: Apple
Pay support. Bringing the app to version 11.25.0, the update lets users opt
to pay with Apple Pay when booking with local businesses, restaurants, and
more.

For those unfamiliar, Yelp is a popular crowd-sourced application that makes
it easy for users to quickly find nearby restaurants, events, shopping
amenities, and more. The Yelp backend also supports reservations, booking,
and more for participating businesses.
With Apple Pay support, users can now use their Apple Pay information to
make it even easier to book. Apple Pay now appears as a payment option in
the app, alongside standard options such as PayPal and debt/credit cards.
Yelp describes it like this:
Big news. You can now use Apple Pay to make purchases from local businesses
on Yelp. So go ahead - book an oceanside couples massage, get tickets to
that John Mayer concert, or get those lobster rolls delivered.
Yelp is available on the App Store for free. It offers iPhone, iPad,
iMessage, and Apple Watch applications so you can access it from any of your
Apple devices. Let us know if you're a big Yelp user down in the comments

Re: App Support?

Hi. I got the same alert not long ago about ooTunes. Though it has not
been updated in several years, I've heard from other people on this
list that the developer is responsive about adding stations and fixing
issues with current stations accessed through the app. I am usually
not one to hang onto an app that hasn't been updated in awhile, but
there are many stations that I listen to with ooTunes, like Clear
Channel or others, that I can get with that one app. Verses having to
download several different apps to do the job of one.

interesting article. I have tinkered a bit with 3D Touch but haven't
really adopted it into my daily use, mainly because I forget about it
most of the time. It does seem like there should be a better way to
see if it is on or not, other than force touching various apps to see
what happens.

I really enjoy the bonus feature. True, I could live without it, but it is a

I use it most on the phone app for quickly calling favorites. If I open the

Another instance where I use it often is calendar. 3d touch on the calendar is

I just noticed with the latest update, I can 3d touch on weather & add a new

Hi!
I use iPhone 6S Plus and I was rather curious how the 3D Touch will
work before I got the device.
And, like the author of the article said, it could be useful and it
has some features which fasten the usability of the phone but it is
nothing I can't live without. I have a three years long experience

Perhaps folks for whom the 6S models are the first iDevice ever will

When Apple launched the iPhone
6s/Plus, 3D
Touch was one of the headline features. Apple
devoted a full four-minute video to showing what it does
and how it works. Even today, visit the Apple website and
  click on the iPhone
6s, and it’s the first thing you see. Apple’s
summary of the phone is ‘3D Touch, 12MP photos, 4K video.’
The first tab at the top of the screen is 3D Touch. The
first video linked is the one for 3D Touch. Scroll down
the page for the detail of the phone, and 3D Touch – ‘the
next generation of multi-touch’ – is again the first
feature to be shown. Clearly Apple thinks it’s a big deal.
And yet, the company just this week unveiled not just one
but two new iOS devices, neither of which offers the
feature. This is perhaps understandable in the case of the
  iPhone
SE – Apple needed some tech distinctions between its
flagship phone and its new budget model. But it’s an odd
  omission from a brand
new iPad …

I’ve heard two theories about why Apple hasn’t rolled out
3D Touch more widely. The first is that yield rates have
been poor. That would limit the volumes in which the
system can be produced, and make it an expensive feature
to add. If that is indeed the case, it adds a second
reason for Apple to withhold it from its cheapest ever
  iPhone.
The second is that there are significant challenges
involved in scaling-up 3D Touch to larger screens, and
that this is the reason we haven’t yet seen it on an iPad.
While both suggestions are unconfirmed, I think they are
likely true – because otherwise, Apple’s behavior doesn’t
make sense. There’s no other reason I can see to hold back
from the latest iPad a feature the company champions so
  strongly.
But even if it’s manufacturing challenges holding back
the wider rollout, it still effectively places the feature
on hold for a large chunk of iOS users.

Nor is hardware support the only issue. While we have
seen an increasing number of apps adding support for 3D
Touch, it has still been adopted by only a minority of
them. I haven’t seen any hard numbers, but if you follow
the ‘View 3D Touch apps in the App Store‘
link on Apple’s website, it shows only 56.
Clearly there are many more than that, but a random
sampling of the third-party apps on the first two screens
on my iPhone shows that just 9 out of 37 of them support
3D Touch. Whatever the overall percentage, it’s low.
If adding 3D Touch support to an app was a complex task,

I’ve heard two theories about why Apple hasn’t rolled out 3D Touch more widely.
The first is that yield rates have been poor. That would limit the volumes in
which the system can be produced, and make it an expensive feature to add. If
that is indeed the case, it adds a second reason for Apple to withhold it from
its cheapest ever iPhone.

The second is that there are significant challenges involved in scaling-up 3D
Touch to larger screens, and that this is the reason we haven’t yet seen it on
an iPad.

While both suggestions are unconfirmed, I think they are likely true – because
otherwise, Apple’s behavior doesn’t make sense. There’s no other reason I can
see to hold back from the latest iPad a feature the company champions so
strongly.

But even if it’s manufacturing challenges holding back the wider rollout, it
still effectively places the feature on hold for a large chunk of iOS users.

Nor is hardware support the only issue. While we have seen an increasing number
of apps adding support for 3D Touch, it has still been adopted by only a
minority of them. I haven’t seen any hard numbers, but if you follow the ‘View

support 3D Touch. Whatever the overall percentage, it’s low.

If adding 3D Touch support to an app was a complex task, you could understand
developers deciding not to bother until Apple makes it available on more
devices. But it’s not: adding Home screen actions is extremely easy. For
whatever reason, developers don’t appear to share Apple’s view of the
importance of the feature.

And it’s not just third-party developers who haven’t fully embraced the
feature: there are still native Apple apps that don’t. The Activity app, for
one. That’s a pretty crazy state of affairs.

My sampling of my own apps brings up another big problem with 3D Touch. The
only way I could tell which ones support it was to force-touch each one in
turn. Trial-and-error. There’s no other way to tell.

As Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly put it in a Facebook discussion we were
having yesterday: “For the record, I like 3D Touch, but it needs to be
implemented in a way that removes the guesswork of what is and isn’t 3D Touch
enabled.”

I’m going to be a little less polite than him. Just think about that from a UI
perspective: an app may or may not support a headline feature of the phone, and
the only way I can tell is by randomly stabbing at apps with my finger like a
deranged monkey. That is utterly appalling UI design, and there’s no excuse for
it from anyone – far less from Apple, which prides itself on usability above
all else.

I would argue it’s also poor UI to have an operating system feature that may or
may not be available depending on the device you’re using at the time. Sure, I
understand that older devices may not be able to support all of the latest
features, and that there are some features only practical on a larger screen.
But someone switching between the flagship iPhone and the very latest iPad
should not be seeing a feature on their phone that they can’t use on their iPad.

So 3D Touch seems to be trapped in a Catch-22 situation. App developers are
seeing what looks like half-hearted support for it from Apple, and not even
bothering to do the pretty trivial work involved in supporting Home screen
actions, while Apple can’t really make too much fuss about a feature that some
of its high-end iOS devices don’t have at all, and others have in only a
relatively small percentage of apps.

This seems to me to call into question the future of the feature. Even if 3D
Touch makes it into iPads in the next rel

There's Simple (no really, its' just called Simple). It's an online-only
bank, offering very few fees, good ATM coverage, an app they are working to
make fully accessible but that people say already works well with VoiceOver,
and other features. There are others, but that's the only one I have dealt
with. currently, I'm waiting for my invitation - you can't just sign up, you
must request an invitation and wait until a slot opens up. They also can
only do personal accounts, no small business yet.

Regarding online banking: what you are talking about is offerred by many of
the banks people have mentioned. I have not heard of a bank which only
operates online, though I wouldn't be surprised if one existed. I don't know
if the online bank would exist very well in our society since most people
like the option of going to a physical location and talking to someone if an
issue or concern comes up. Or, if they simply want to deal with a real
person. Most of the major banks and credit unions have online banking
services, such as Chase, Wells-Fargo, Bank of America, and many others. I
use Chase and I have had no issues with their app. I can even transfer money
between accounts in the Chase app. I used to call the toll free number for
Chase once or twice a day to hear my balance and other information.
Now, I open the app. Chase offers a service where you can sign-up for
different email alerts, such as low balance alerts, when checks or
transactions clear your account, and many other kinds. This is another way
that I stay on top of my accounts.

Online banking is like Facebook: you can do as much or as little as you
want. Some banks, like Chase, offer online demonstrations so you can see the
kinds of information you would find in an account summary.
Go to your bank's site and see if you can find something like this.

Good luck,
Wayne

The Bank of America app is completely accessible. You can take a

I've not heard much about Wells Fargo's app, but since you have an

Chase also has talking ATMs at evry location. the talking ATM's can
read a deposit amount on a check, even if it is handwritten. No
envelope is needed and no deposit slip is required to deposit a check
at a Chase ATM. It is now not necessary to keep track of the amount
of the check because the talking ATM scans the check and can identify
the amount. I believe the iPhone app has a limit of $2,500 in
deposits on any single day and about $5,000 in any 30 day period.
Talking ATM's have no deposit limits.

Regarding online banking: what you are talking about is offerred by many of
the banks people have mentioned. I have not heard of a bank which only
operates online, though I wouldn't be surprised if one existed. I don't
 know
if the online bank would exist very well in our society since most people
like the option of going to a physical location and talking to someone if
 an
issue or concern comes up. Or, if they simply want to deal with a real
person. Most of the major banks and credit unions have online banking
services, such as Chase, Wells-Fargo, Bank of America, and many others. I
use Chase and I have had no issues with their app. I can even transfer
 money
between accounts in the Chase app.

Online banking is like Facebook: you can do as much or as little as you
want. Some banks, like Chase, offer online demonstrations so you can see
 the
kinds of information you would find in an account summary.
Go to your bank's site and see if you can find something like this.

 Good luck,

Well, It was a good while ago when I set this up, so my failing mind cannot
remember the steps. I suggest you download the app and just try it. It
will doubtless ask you for a variety of information to validate your
identity, to ensure that what you write matches what is on file. There is
also a department for assisting with online access, and in my experience
they do try to assist, so there is nothing to lose by trying the app and
following the prompts.

Regarding online banking: what you are talking about is offerred by
many of the banks people have mentioned. I have not heard of a bank
which only operates online, though I wouldn't be surprised if one
existed. I don't know if the online bank would exist very well in
our society since most people like the option of going to a physical
location and talking to someone if an issue or concern comes up. Or,
if they simply want to deal with a real person. Most of the major
banks and credit unions have online banking services, such as Chase,
Wells-Fargo, Bank of America, and many others. I use Chase and I have
had no issues with their app. I can even transfer money between
accounts in the Chase app. I used to call the toll free number for
Chase once or twice a day to hear my balance and other information.
Now, I open the app. Chase offers a service where you can sign-up for
different email alerts, such as low balance alerts, when checks or
transactions clear your account, and many other kinds. This is another
way that I stay on top of my accounts.

Online banking is like Facebook: you can do as much or as little as
you want. Some banks, like Chase, offer online demonstrations so you
can see the kinds of information you would find in an account summary.
Go to your bank's site and see if you can find something like this.

Good luck,
Wayne

Those are very real concerns. What I do is use a different password
for the Chase app than I use with other apps. Also, an added bonus
with the Chase app, if there are two minutes of no activity the user
is automatically logged out. Hopefully with the iPhone 5S and 6/+ and
newer phones and devices, the touch ID will also help to keep your

Well, It was a good while ago when I set this up, so my failing mind cannot
remember the steps. I suggest you download the app and just try it. It will
doubtless ask you for a variety of information to validate your identity, to
ensure that what you write matches what is on file. There is also a department
for assisting with online access, and in my experience they do try to assist,
so there is nothing to lose by trying the app and following the prompts.

Hi. I've been using the Chase mobile app for over three years now and haven't
had any trouble with it at all. In addition to the usual stuff like checking
balances, paying bills online and transferring funds from one account to
another, it will let you scan and deposit checks. Since I'm total I've always
been a little leery of trying that option out myself, but as I think about it
now, I wonder if it might be feasible at some time in the future to scan a
check using an app like TextGrabber or KNFB Reader, save the check image, then
import it into a banking app, as opposed to using the native scanning function
in the banking app itself. I wouldn't want to run into hassles with scanning a
check and attempting a deposit without enough feedback to indicate that I took
a good shot of the check. What do you all think of

RE: Online banking and iOS app support

2014-11-19 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,

The US Bank app is quite accessible. I only use it for checking our Visa card,
but I suspect all the other features are equally accessible.

The Bank of America app is completely accessible. You can take a picture of a
check and deposit it, but if you have no vision, you have to make sure and
figure out which is the front and back and whether it is upside down or not.

I’ve not heard much about Wells Fargo’s app, but since you have an account with
them, you probably should check it out.

I know nothing about the various online banking companies. I personally prefer
to deal with a company that if there is a real issue, I can go into a physical
office and talk with a manager.

HTH,

Richard

Hello list,

So I need to open a small business checking account. I could go with either
USBank or Wells Fargo as I already have accounts with them, but I’ve been
thinking of just going the online bank rout. I was curious of anyone uses an
exclusive online bank and if they have reasonably accessible iOS apps? The
typical stuff. Depositing checks, bank transfers, account balance, etc.

I may just end up going with one of the banks I mentioned, but since it’s not
like I can test drive an online option without going through the process of
opening an account, I thought I’d ask.

Nerd Wallet has a good breakdown of online banking options in general:

If it matters, I was leaning towards Ally. Simple looked like a good option,
but I believe they’re not accepting new customers at the moment.

Re: Online banking and iOS app support

2014-11-19 Thread John Diakogeorgiou
I've used several banks which give you the ability to scan checks. I
haven't seen one which lets you import the checks. I have also not had
good luck with scanning myself. I have not tried using the scan stand
though. I find the apps are very finicky with this feature. They have
to be able to recognize the info on the checks. Two that I have tried
are Chase and Huntington with the same results. I know this doesn't
answer the original question but it goes with some of the other
discussion.

I don't have any experience with either of these banks or online bank apps.
However, one thing I would suggest is that the app be able to make deposits by
taking picutres of a check. Even though you may think you don't need it now it
would be a potentially great feature if you don't have access to a physical
bank.

Yes, I’m familiar with these traditional banks and their apps. One thing to
keep in mind with USBank is that they charge you 50 cents for each check you
deposit mobiley. I just find the nickel and diming the brick and mortar banks
to be off-putting.

Off hand, I don’t recall the last time I had to physically go into a bank about
an issue. This is why my interest in an online bank alternative.

They’re all going to more or less do the same thing. I was just curious as to
the iOS accessibility with their apps since they’re not going to be as big as
the more well-known banks.

original post, I meant to say apple care support.

Folks in follow up posts have asked about the status/symptoms of my Iphone 4s.

My in store appointment is not until Wednesday, so I won't have a
final diagnosis until then. At the time I made my first of many calls
to Apple Care support (877) 204-3930, my issue was that everyone I
attempted to talk to on a phone call using the speaker said they could
not hear me. So I had to plug in the ear buds when making calls.

The reset I was asked to do was from the settings menu. I have cloud
backup for the phone.

When the phone came back on, and I had to re establish my wi fi
connection, I was in a typing mode different than what I was used to.
the rep could not guide me to the proper correction. Since then, the
phone has been setting off a chime sound when I attempt to input into
the phone call keyboard, cutting off the attempted dialed number. It
sounds like the Siri chime. I have many radio apps. also mlb at bat,
and ITunes radio. These streams are suddenly starting with the
slightest touch to the phone without opening or touching the
individual app in question. And the 2 finger double tap no longer
stops the stream playing. I have to power the phone off. And my
question about keyboard feedback and voiceover could not be answered
by one of the reps I talked to. He said the keyboard was acting
correctly and there was no adjustment to produce what I was
requesting. Because of the knowledge of some nice posters on this
list, I know have the keyboard arrangement I wanted.

So we still don't know what the speaker problem is. also today, I was
at the Pirates game, it started raining, my wife and I put our phones
in our backpack for protection. When the rain stopped, her phone was
cool, and had battery life. Mine was hot, and the battery was drained
completely. Another negative issue since the reset.
Will update this Wednesday.

RE: app support often wrong

2014-06-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eric,

It sounds to me that your phone has a hardware problem, but I'm sure the
Apple Genious who will check out your phone will be able to tell you.

As far as some of the things you mentioned:

Typing Mode: Standard typing is default when you get a new phone or if you
do a factory reset. In this situation the first thing I do when I am
prompted to enter my WiFi password is turn the rotor to Typing Mode and I
flick down to change it to touch typing. Should a standard Apple tech be
aware of every Voiceover feature? Well, I guess in a perfect world maybe so,
maybe if you call Apple support and state that you are blind and a Voiceover
user you should be immediately transferred to accessibility support where
they might have answers for these issues.

Maybe your home key is dirty or stuck and that is why you are getting the
SIRI tone because the phone may think you are pressing the home key--just a
suggestion.

Anyhow, I wish you luck when you have your appointment and hopefully there
isn't any major problem with the hardware since your 4S is not under
warranty any more.

Regards,
Sieghard
