Well, I'm in a bit of strange situation. I'm from Croatia and speak
Croatian language which is currently not available for iOS and OS X.
As a replacement we in Croatia use Czech voices till we finally get
something genuine for our users. I don't feel good about complaining
how other voices perform and since the development of Croatian
Vocalizer is in process I'll do my best to spread my opiniion within
the team.

abbreviations would write them as well and ask them to either
stop it completely or provide an exception dictionary that we

Hi!
Back in the days while I was a member of another blind iOS list one
of the fellow members was trying to get some kind of wish list what
would we all like to see in iOS 7 fro accessibility point of view.
As far as I know, she never managed to compile the list and send it
to Apple but the general idea is still worth a try.
Perhaps we should gather the list of current issues and possible
improovements on some petition site, sign it all together and send
it to Apple.

I disagree that there's nothing Apple can do. Apple can definitely work

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts, whose name is Al Jones. I couldn't find him until I realized that VoiceOver was pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid and then got a little miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

Hi.

I was in the NFL Mobile app on my iPhone 5C running the latest iOs. I wanted
to hear the game between Arizona and Green Bay. I got there, and was selecting
the feed I wanted. The app gives you updates about who has the ball, and where
it is on the field. They use abbreviations for the teams. GB was used for
Green Bay. I was navigating through the info on the screen, and was surprised
to hear the ball was on the gigabytes 25. I know whoever is programming
VoiceOver to give information means well, but I wish they’d just let
abbreviations say their letters. VoiceOver isn’t the only one who does this.
I never knew, for example about Hartford, Court, or my Physician was Drive
Johnson. Oh well, it is humorous in a way, but there is sometimes too much of
a good thing.

Just thought I’d share this observation.

Have a good day, and don’t work too hard.

I agree we should let Apple know about things that need fixing or
improving on the iPhone. As you said, Apple won't know what to fix or
change if they don't hear from us. I've sent many a suggestion to the
Apple feedback site and accessibility related issues to their
accessibility mailing list.

I won't be sending in a message about the abbreviation expansion though,
since as I said, it doesn't bother me personally.

What I didn't understand, and where we may not agree, is that I don't
think it makes sense to mention the American's with Disabilities Act
when talking about the abbreviation expansion. I don't think it's an
employment issue. I'm not sure if that's what you were trying to say or
not though.

Re: I wish VoiceOver didn't try to pronounce what it thinks abbriviations mean, but it can be humorous.

2015-12-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I disagree that there's nothing Apple can do. Apple can definitely work
with Nuance to get a toggle added as to whether abbreviations are
expanded or not, and then Apple can include a setting for this toggle in
VoiceOver settings. I suspect Apple has quite a bit of influence with
Nuance, and Nuance would listen to Apple when it comes to a feature request.

I find it just an inconvenience myself, and I have other things I'd
rather have Apple address which I consider a higher priority, so I wont'
be dropping a note to Apple accessibility myself.

Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts, whose
name is Al Jones. I couldn’t find him until I realized that VoiceOver was

miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

I wonder if there is a workaround for this?

Does Nuance not have a dictionary as does Jaws. If it had, you could instruct
it that when it saw GB etc, it was to read the letters, and not try to gainsay

Hi!
I totally agree but I believe it doesn't have much to do with Voice
Over as with Nuance Vocalizer TTS which Voice Over is using. I
really hate when TTS thinks it's smarter than me and that's I liked
Apollo and Juno in the back days and today I like Espeak.

Hi,
Actually, same with Samantha. If I put: 2GB, I'll hear giga ytes. But if I put
GB, I won't hear giga bytes. I'll just hear g b. Although, for SD, she does say
South Dacota, (excuse spelling).

It's hard for me to understand this message, so I apologize if I get it
wrong, but I don't think a text to speech engine trying to pronounce
abbreviations has anything to do with the American's with Disabilities
Act. I can't think of a situation where someone would be at a
disadvantage in an employment situation because a synthesizer expanded
an abbreviation.

Hello,
Not sure, but its pretty funny, when you abbreviate facetime as FT, and the
siri voices (some, anyway) say feature, or featuring, can't remember which.
While not the best, try experimenting with voices?

Re: I wish VoiceOver didn't try to pronounce what it thinks abbriviations mean, but it can be humorous.

2015-12-27 Thread Paul Richard McGann

to all,

as the people at apple store and few officials for apple headquarters, they
keep telling me that it is very important for al of you to notify apple
accessibility team as team would give note to the engineers and developers
who would follow your needs.

I have given some suggestions for braille users, and also there are other
things. plese don't hold back to yourself. open up and speak out to apple
yourself. they need your help.

it would be very helpful if yo share your views and your thoughts. it would
be easier.

remember the quote: you can see me but I can't see you...I can see you but
you can't see me.

same idea, apple officials don't know what you know and you don't know what
they know. so please be more helpful.

respectfully,
rich

I wrote Apple Accessibility about this earlier today. I'd suggest everyone
who would like VoiceOver to stop guessing at abbreviations would write them
as well and ask them to either stop it completely or provide an exception
dictionary that we can use to fix pronunciations.

Looking at baseball, AL for American League, gets pronounced Alabama.
Cal as a first name gets pronounced California and so on.

Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts, whose
name is Al Jones. I couldn’t find him until I realized that VoiceOver was
pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid and then got a
little miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

I wonder if there is a workaround for this?

(smile)

Mark

Hi.

I was in the NFL Mobile app on my iPhone 5C running the latest iOs. I
wanted to hear the game between Arizona and Green Bay. I got there, and was
selecting the feed I wanted. The app gives you updates about who has the
ball, and where it is on the field. They use abbreviations for the teams.
GB was used for Green Bay. I was navigating through the info on the screen,
and was surprised to hear the ball was on the gigabytes 25. I know whoever
is programming VoiceOver to give information means well, but I wish they’d
just let abbreviations say their letters. VoiceOver isn’t the only one who
does this. I never knew, for example about Hartford, Court, or my Physician
was Drive Johnson. Oh well, it is humorous in a way, but there is sometimes
too much of a good thing.

Just thought I’d share this observation.

Have a good day, and don’t work too hard.

Re: I wish VoiceOver didn't try to pronounce what it thinks abbriviations mean, but it can be humorous.

2015-12-27 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
No, because like I said, it's a Nuance issue, not an Apple issue. The nuance
Vocalizer voices do that on every platform, weather it's iOS's or OS X's
Voiceover, NVDA and Jaws. Like I said, Alex doesn't do that, and that's who I
use all the time. I might use one of the Siri voices here and there, which I
might add are also owned by Nuance as well, but I lean back on Alex. Just keep
that in mind, it's not just an Apple issue, it's everywhere else too. Nuance
would have to reprogram their voices so that it would ignore abbreviations or
make them smarter like Apple does with Alex. Also, they would have to do that
on every platform.
