hi, you know, when I got my new phone, which is a 13 Pro Max, I did the same
thing and 911 called me. I kind of freaked out, and told them that I was
getting used to a new phone. They laughed and they said oh fine. Then they said
that they were glad that I was all right. Esther

There are two ways to call emergency services with the side button and both of
these methods can be disabled in Settings > Emergency SOS:

1. Call with Hold, the explanation reads:
Press and hold the side button and either volume button to make an emergency
call. In certain regions you may need to specify an emergency service to dial.
Auto call requires a SIM card.
If you swipe right you then have the "Call with Hold" button which will either
say On or Off and you can double tap on it to toggle it.
If you swipe right again there is a further explanation:
If you press and hold the side button and volume buttons the emergency SOS
slider appears. If you continue to hold them a countdown begins and an alert
sounds. When the countdown ends iPhone calls emergency services.

2. Call with 5 presses
Rapidly pressing the side button 5 times starts a countdown and sounds an
alert. When the countdown ends iPhone calls emergency services.

I personally have the press and hold option turned on since it is very
difficult to accidently press and hold either volume up or volume down along
with the side button. Taking a screenshot requires you to also press volume up
and the side button, but you simply press and release and I have never even
come close to triggering the emergency SOS. Also, keep in mind that as long as
you don't panic you can still cancel the emergency call, I believe the
countdown lasts 5 minutes and there is a cancel button which allows you to stop
it before the call.

Pressing the side button 5 times can be a bit easier to do accidently since
most people set up the side button to turn Voiceover on or off with a triple
press. If somebody maybe has some motor difficulties I could see how they may
press the button 5 times instead of 3 times.

As for using the side button by itself to invoke SIRI is not a problem and
there is no way you can call emergency services this way.
In the same way there really is no way you can make an emergency call if you
press the buttons to power off your phone because you press them in sequence
and not together: first press and release volume up, then press and release
volume down and then press and hold the side button for just a moment until
Voiceover says "Power off button".
There used to be a button on that same screen which allowed you to also call
Emergency Services, but it's been removed in a recent iOS update and now all
you have on that screen is Power Off, a button with a funny Voiceover label
which says something about "Location fill radio waves left and right" and it
has to do with whether your iPhone can be found with Find My after it has been
powered off and lastly there is a cancel button.
If you are still worried you can always bring up the Power Off menu by going to
Settings > General > Shutdown, it does the same thing as pressing volume up,
volume down and the side button.

You have to press the side button 5 times quickly in order to bring up
emergency calling.

When I turn on my Asus Zenbook laptop I have absolutely no feedback until the
Windows startup sound plays which is almost simultaneous to when Jaws starts
speaking and it takes about 10 seconds from when I press the power button. The
power button is just like any other button on the keyboard so once again, you
press it and assume the laptop turns on which of course it does and then you
get the startup sound and Jaws starts to speak at the logon screen.
Now, here my iPhone 11: I press the side button (power button) and hold it for
a 4 count and then let go. Then just as with my laptop I wait about 12 or 15
seconds (probably depends a bit on your phone) and then I hear a little jingle
and Voiceover comes up and I am asked to enter my PIN.
The difference: really none and not a process where you can do anything wrong.
When I want to power off my iPhone I press volume up, volume down and then I
press and hold the side butto

Maybe so, but if it is an official accessibility feature which it seems to be
and yet it's not even available on the iPhone 14 then the assumption that an
A16 chip is required would be the logical explanation and hence it won't come
to other phones until a few years from now when even the oldest phones have an
A16 chip and the newest have advanced well beyond it.

I doubt it requires feedback to Apple, obviously the fact they included it now
means they have already listened to the feedback and if it in fact is only on
the iPhone 14 Pro with the A16 chip then it is clearly a hardware requirement
and as soon as the next generation of iPhone comes out in a year when other
phones get the A16 chip and most likely the next new Pro phones get the A17 it
will be a feature available on all phones and iPads.

The only way it will role down to older phones is to submit feedback to either
apple accessibility
apple.com/feedback

Or if you’re a beta tester submit feedback through the feedback app. I did
that.

I agree. It would be nice to have haptic feedback or the chime. I use the
evo10 daisy player. When I turn the player on, I have a choice, of a chime,
vibration, or bothe chime and vibration. I have my player set to the vibration
because the start up chime is rather louder then it really needs to be. This
is all very interesting.
Apple keeps rolling out some really cool stuff.

I must have magical powers I have accidentally called 911 twice. The first
time I think I was holding my phone as we crossed a parking lot and got into
the car. Suddenly I heard this alarm and 911 came on the line. Freaked me out,
so I called Apple accessibility to find out how I had done it. I thought we
had turned off the feature, but then one night while dealing with a kid having
a nightmare and trying to check the time on my phone, I again accidentally
called 911. I did not hear a countdown or warning with the second time. It
would have been really stressful if the police had showed up at my door in the
middle of the night trying to figure out if I was OK.So, there just must be
something with the way I grab my phone where I end up pressing the side button
and volume down button at the same time.

You have to press the side button 5 times quickly in order to bring up

RE: [tech-vi Announce List] iPhone 14 Pro Models Will Have a New Chime During Startup

2022-09-08 Thread R Van Lant
My guess is the chime would happen at the same time the sighted people see the
apple symbol appear on their screen, but may be that is wishful thinking.

I was wondering that myself. Would the sound chime as soon as you hit your
power button, or take a little time. Some very interesting things coming out
in the apple world these days.

RE: [tech-vi Announce List] iPhone 14 Pro Models Will Have a New Chime During Startup

2022-09-08 Thread R Van Lant

Feedback might help to ensure Apple includes this on all devices as they get
the new chip, and I am always pro feedback, but I agree with Sieghard, that
feedback won't help if this is hardware dependent, which it seems to be.

Now, here my iPhone 11: I press the side button (power button) and hold it for
a 4 count and then let go. Then just as with my laptop I wait about 12 or 15
seconds (probably depends a bit on your phone) and then I hear a little jingle
and Voiceover comes up and I am asked to enter my PIN.
The difference: really none and not a process where you can do anything wrong.
When I want to power off my iPhone I press volume up, volume down and then I
press and hold the side button for just a second or so and Voiceover will say
"Power Off button", I double tap on it and the phone shuts down. Once again I
don't find there really is any margin for error, but if you really want to know

I wish we could also have the privative yet effective vibration alert that the
phone is booting up. Kind of like when your device connects to AC power, but
some sort of verification that the device is coming online. I think it's cool
they have this feature, I wish it had been more universally designed. Oh well,
I've lived without it before, I can continue to do so. LOL

RE: [tech-vi Announce List] iPhone 14 Pro Models Will Have a New Chime During Startup

2022-09-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Hi,

If vibrate with sounds was on wouldn't that allow the device to vibrate
along with the sound emitted?

If not it's disappointing because those who are deaf blind should have
equal access to this as well.

Take good care,

Robin

 From the Tech-VI list owner:
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models will have the ability to play a
chime
during the boot process. This has been an option which many blind
iPhone
users have wanted for years. Rather than posting the entire article I
am
pasting just the relevant section below. If you go to the original
source
link you can hear what the new chime sounds like. Please note that on
my
PC
the sound was a bit louder than expected. Those using headphones,
earbuds
or
who have sensitivity to loud sounds should be aware of this.

Boot chime for iPhone 14 Pro

Another new feature coming to iPhone 14 Pro models is a boot chime.
More
specifically, users will have the option to make the iPhone play a
sound
every time the device is turned on or off as part of the iOS
accessibility
features.

Since the startup sound is played during the boot process, the chime is
part
of the bootrom of the new A16 chip – which is probably why this option
is
not available for other iPhone models.

 Chime
 During Startup
 Reply-To: tech...@groups.io

I was wondering that myself. Would the sound chime as soon as you hit
your power button, or take a little time. Some very interesting
things coming out in the apple world these days.

It's going to be interesting to see at what point exactly the sound is
played. Obviously the longer the delay between power on and sound the
less useful it becomes. Definitely some impressive engineering going
on if they got it to a point where iBoot was able to handle audio. In
an ideal world it would also sound if you had a corrupt iOS install.

Obviously not something to go out and buy a Pro for on its own, but
you'd imagine that the feature will trickle down to less expensive
models over the years.

The article only said iPhone 14 pro models with the A16 chip. Darn.
This is a feature I've wanted for sometime. Now I have something to
look forward to when I get a new iPhone. If only I'd waited for the
iPhone 14 pro max.

2022-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If the regular iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have the sound it can't be part of the A16
chip because they only have the A15, same as the iPhone 13/13 Mini and 13
Pro/Pro Max.
Only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is getting the A16 chip.

Boot chime for iPhone 14 Pro

Another new feature coming to iPhone 14 Pro models is a boot chime. More
specifically, users will have the option to make the iPhone play a sound every
time the device is turned on or off as part of the iOS accessibility features.

Since the startup sound is played during the boot process, the chime is part of
the bootrom of the new A16 chip – which is probably why this option is not
available for other iPhone models.
