Re: BARD Mobile Finally Recieves an Update

2015-10-19 Thread Wayne Merritt
Another thing that they added was an add/delete to/from wish list
button in the more info page for a book. So if you are looking at
recent books or magazines, then in addition to downloading the book on
the more info screen you can now add it to your wish list. If however
you are looking at the more info page for a book that is already in
your wish list then that button becomes a delete from wish list
button. These are awesome additions IMO, since I don't have to
navigate to the BARD website from within the app or on my computer in
order to manage my wish list. Also, they fixed the phone/device from
locking when a download is in progress. There were other things added
or fixed aside from the sleep timer, so those interested be sure to
read the release notes in the App Store. I would love to see the
ability for BARD to keep track of what you have downloaded or marked
on your wish list from iCloud, but that is probably on the road map
for future development. If that were enabled then people would not
have to keep downloading books between devices that they have already
gotten.

My greatest wish for the Bard reading app would be the ability to let's say I
start reading a book on my iPhone. Now I come home. I pull out my trusty
dusty iPad, open up the Bard reading app, select the same book I was just
reading and pickup from where I left off. There has to be a way to do it with
out both devices being in costant contact. I'd guess if enough folks tell bard
that want the feature the smart people will make it happen and please don't
flood me with reasons why you think it'll never happen. Somebody just needs to
find a way. Remember, they told Thomas Edison he was nuts too. The only way

Yes, it is possible. I do it all the time with Kindle books and books from
Audible. My concern, with BARD, would be spending time and effort on
something like this rather than on increasing the number of available books.

RE: BARD Mobile Finally Recieves an Update

2015-10-19 Thread Alan Lemly
I agree that the improvements and fixes to BARD Mobile are excellent.

One thing that was not fixed and is fairly minor unless you use the Apple
earpods for most of your listening as I do, concerns the app not retaining
focus when interrupted. By this I mean if you're listening to a book and
then get a phone call which you answer with your earpods remote button,
after the call ends, pressing the remote button to begin playback again will
cause whatever had focus before BARD Mobile to start playing, In my case,
it's usually the music app. BARD Mobile is the only app I use which behaves
this way. When I'm interrupted using Voice Dream or Audible and other such
apps, pressing the remote to begin playback when the interruption is
completed always returns to those apps.

I realize this isn't a big deal as the workaround is to go back to BARD
Mobile on your iDevice which I do with the App Switcher, press the remote
button to start playback, and when the other app starts playing, to double
tap the BARD Mobile play button. This will return focus to it. Since things
such as phone calls, using the remote to call Siri, and a clock timer going
off will cause BARD Mobile to lose focus, it is annoying enough that I wish
they had fixed it with this release.

Another feature I wish the app had was a share button when perusing the more
info of items in one's wish list. I often want to share info with others
about something I'm intending to read and this would be a huge convenience.

Given that it took them 2 years to release an update, how long would
someone be willing to wait for further development of their favorite
features in the BARD Mobile app? I'm sure it will be developed, but
let's remember that the government has their own timeline and update
schedule.

Ah, the rule of thumb, where the government is envolved, is to not hold your
breath waiting for something to happen (Smile). On the other hand, as I
understand it the BARD for Android was written in house, while the one for iOS
was contracted out. The BARD app for Android just came out this year but has
already been updated once or twice. Minor updates to be sure, but makes one
wonder.

2015-10-19 Thread Lisa Belville
Ah, I still have this problem using a Logitech noise canceling headset with
Siri/stop/play controls on the chord. Most of the time something completely
unrelated to what I've been listening to starts playing. I finally figured
out that it was the NPR stream offered by the Apple radio app. I haven't
used Apple radio since it was first introduced, so I'm not sure why it
defaults to this playback. The only way I can be sure I have BARD resuming
is if I completely close down and then relaunch the app after a phonecall or
even an audio notification like a text or other alert. It's annoying, but
I've gotten used to it after nearly 2 years of using the app.

I agree that the improvements and fixes to BARD Mobile are excellent.

One thing that was not fixed and is fairly minor unless you use the Apple
earpods for most of your listening as I do, concerns the app not retaining
focus when interrupted. By this I mean if you're listening to a book and
then get a phone call which you answer with your earpods remote button,
after the call ends, pressing the remote button to begin playback again
will

cause whatever had focus before BARD Mobile to start playing, In my case,
it's usually the music app. BARD Mobile is the only app I use which
behaves

Since
things
such as phone calls, using the remote to call Siri, and a clock timer
going
off will cause BARD Mobile to lose focus, it is annoying enough that I
wish

they had fixed it with this release.

Another feature I wish the app had was a share button when perusing the
more

info of items in one's wish list. I often want to share info with others
about something I'm intending to read and this would be a huge
convenience.

If that were enabled then people would not
have to keep downloading books between devices that they have already
gotten.

grr, that’s a major bummer for me. I can’t even use the BARD app because I
typically need to use headphones and I am always interrupted by a phone call or
the kids. It was just too incredibly frustrating to not be able to quickly
pause and resume playback. It almost always started playing music. So, I just
gave up. I was hoping that since they fixed the two-finger-double-tap that the
pausing with a microphone or headset would also be fixed. The only time I can
use the BARD app is if I know I will absolutely not be interrupted or I am
actively zooming through a magazine and my fingers are constantly on the phone
speeding through tidbits I want to read. However, forget listening to a book
while folding clothes and such. :( I do use the BARD app to browse the latest
books. I do love using the app for that. Now, with the ability to more easily
add and remove books from the wish list, the BARD app is even better for me for
checking out the latest books available.

Thanks Anna,

I have tried this in the past with the previous version of BARD and it never
worked. I also have tried clearing the app switcher and rebooting my phone and
then opening only the BARD app and it will still get confused and start playing
music. :( This is all before the latest BARD update so I will try these work
arounds with this newer version and hope for the best. :)

Also, when it starts playing music, or whatever it starts playing when it is
supposed to be playing your book, , the bard app is still on the screen. Hit
the play button. The music will go away and the bard app will start playing
again. But what is important is that it will behave as it should from then on,
with the headphones, until you hit the home button and go to something else.
Even then, it sometimes behaves as it should until you remove it from the app
switcher or shut down your phone.

Wow! I wanted to test that, because I noticed that when receiving phone calls

Maybe they will fix it someday. Thakns for telling us it wasn't fixed. Yes, I

I agree that the improvements and fixes to BARD Mobile are excellent.

One thing that was not fixed and is fairly minor unless you use the Apple
earpods for most of your listening as I do, concerns the app not retaining
focus when interrupted. By this I mean if you're listening to a book and then
get a phone call which you answer with your earpods remote button, after the

whatever had focus before BARD Mobile to start playing, In my case, it's
usually the music app. BARD Mobile is the only app I use which behaves this
way. When I'm interrupted using Voice Dream or Audible and other such apps,
pressing the remote to begin playback when the interruption is completed always
returns to those apps.

I realize this isn't a big deal as the workaround is to go back to BARD Mobile
on your iDevice which I do with the App Switcher, press the remote button to
start playback, and when the other app starts playing, to double tap the BARD
Mobile play button. This will return focus to it. Since things such as phone
calls, using the remote to call Siri, and a clock timer going off will cause
BARD Mobile to lose focus, it is annoying enough that I wish they had fixed it
with this release.

Another feature I wish the app had was a share button when perusing the more
info of items in one's wish list. I often want to share info with others about
something I'm intending to read and this would be a huge convenience.

Another thing that they added was an add/delete to/from wish list button in the
more info page for a book. So if you are looking at recent books or magazines,
then in addition to downloading the book on the more info screen you can now
add it to your wish list. If however you are looking at the more info page for
a book that is already in your wish list then that button becomes a delete from
wish list button. These are awesome additions IMO, since I don't have to
navigate to the BARD website from within the app or on my computer in order to
manage my wish list. Also, they fixed the phone/device from locking when a

sleep timer, so those interested be sure to read the release notes in the App

downloaded or marked on your wish list from iCloud, but that is probably on the
road map for future development. If that were enabled then people would not
have to keep downloading books between devices that they have already gotten.

The BARD Mobile app would have to have a cloud component, but maybe it
could leverage the account you already have on the BARD site.

I wouldn't worry about this taking resources away from the recording and
distribution of books though. I'm fairly certain those are separate sets
of resources.

I'm perfectly happy with the pace of change and updates in the BARD
Mobile app. It was usable before, and although the updates are
appreciated, there was nothing there I couldn't have waited for.

Thanks Anna,

I have tried this in the past with the previous version of BARD and it never
worked. I also have tried clearing the app switcher and rebooting my phone
and then opening only the BARD app and it will still get confused and start
playing music. :( This is all before the latest BARD update so I will try
these work arounds with this newer version and hope for the best. :)

2015-10-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jeffrey,

Unfortunately, the implementation of the sleep timer in the latest version of
the iOS NLS BARD Mobile app is not a bug.

Like you, I find the fact that initiating the timer causes the playback to
automatically begin, totally annoying and somewhat inconvenient but, obviously,
the developers disagree with us.

As I understand it, from someone who works for the agency, the developers do
not conduct public beta tests.

Hi,

The braille shortcut is that pressing T skips you past blank lines to the next

As for the sleep timer, the explanation I heard was that they wanted the app to

designed it the way they did.

Best,
Anna

RE: BARD Mobile Finally Recieves an Update

2015-10-21 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
This is exactly how the NLS players work. The sleep timer starts the book
playing. It moves by 15 minute increments up to an hour, then goes back to
off15 minutes.

God bless!

When I click on the sleep timer to activate it, the book starts playing, which
seems like a bug to me, but may be a misguided feature. To increment the sleep
timer, you must double-tap repeatedly on the button, but it’s hard to hear what
the new setting is because the book is blabbing away.

Others can presumably reproduce this behavior?

I get the same results using Downcast, are you sure it isn't an IOS problem
rather than BARD?

Thanks Anna,

I have tried this in the past with the previous version of BARD and it never
worked. I also have tried clearing the app switcher and rebooting my phone and
then opening only the BARD app and it will still get confused and start playing
music. :( This is all before the latest BARD update so I will try these work
arounds with this newer version and hope for the best. :)

HI Christina,

Try removing other audio apps from the app switcher before you start using BARD
Mobile. This may help.

Best,

Anna

grr, that’s a major bummer for me.

Re: BARD Mobile Finally Recieves an Update

2015-10-21 Thread Wayne Merritt
One work around for the sleep timer issue is to turn Audio Ducking on
and then deal with the sleep timer button. Once you have it set to the
right amount you could turn Audio Ducking off again. An inconvenience
but it is what it is.
