Travel time does a few things. If an appointment is flagged as busy, it marks the travel time as busy also, so one does not schedule another appointment during that time (or at least gives a warning of potential conflict). If the appointment is shared, the travel time portion is not shared. Travel time adjusts the appointment alerts to alert the number of minutes before travel time rather than before the actual appointment. If a location is used, Apple Maps is consulted to calculate travel time and directions from a chosen origin. Travel time can be set as this amount. Also, both driving and walking travel times are offered. One can choose which is preferred. As the default calendar alert is 15 minutes before the appointment start time, or the travel time if that is selected, you would not have received an alert as the time you selected was already past. There is a list view button at the top of every calendar standard view screen. SELECTING the list view button has a different effect depending on which calendar view screen one is in. For instance, when in the month view, activating list view makes month view work like the older month view with the date and number of appointments announced, and the current date selected list of appointments at the bottom of the display. Whilst in this view, double-tapping on the appointment opens the appointment screen. Double-tapping on a day selects the day and brings that day's appointments up at the bottom of the screen. When list view is not selected in month view, double-tapping on a date brings up day/week view. In this view, all seven days of the current week are displayed at the top of the display, and the current selected day is displayed hour by hour on the screen. I do not remember what selecting list view does in this screen. If list view is selected, it anchors to the screen that it was selected on, and causes appropriate changes to other views. Deselecting list view switches calendar to standard. List view can then be selected in the current view screen to activate different factors. One of the standard view screens will place the complete list of appointments on the display. I do not remember which view screen one must be in for this particular view effect as I do not use it. I encourage people to experiment and find the view they prefer. The calendar is very powerful. The hint you hear, and the delete gesture, don't know that, so VoiceOver still presents the option even though it will do nothing. My advice is to buy FantastiCal 2 for the iPhone. It pulls the information in your native Calendar app, but is much easier to use. For the record, I've never had trouble with the native app. I got Fantastical while it was on sale a couple months back, but I never use it. I don't see what it offers me, besides far easier appointment adding, that the native app does not. As to listing events, don't flick to them - you'll start way back in the past, as you discovered. Instead, touch the middle of the screen, or wherever the list is displayed, and you will land on the current or nearest event. You can't delete holiday events because those are on a public (read-only) calendar. The hint you hear, and the delete gesture, don't know that, so VoiceOver still presents the option even though it will do nothing. I'm not sure what you mean about not being able to view event details - double tapping an event should open that event. Again, the public holidays calendar may not support this, I'm not sure. I have to admit, I have not used the native calendar app in a long time, I just went into it. First, double tap on the day of the event you want to check. You will get a list of your appointments from that day forward. Touch the event you want more details on or want to edit. Flick up or down until it says details and double tap. I now have a screen with just that event, with an edit button in the upper right and a delete event button at the bottom of the screen just above the home button. It actually works quite well. I still prefer the ease of entering events in Fantastical 2 and in particular, the ease of setting up repeating events on say, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, etc. Once you get the hang of the phrasing, you can do those kinds of events in one string in Fantastical 2. But, for straight forward calendaring, I will say the native app seems to be just fine. I'm not sure why you have to, but at least it works. :) As to repeating events, the update to the calendar in iOS8 lets you specify far more detailed repeat intervals than ever before, such as every other Friday or Monday and Thursday of every two weeks. Fantastical still wins when creating events, as you said, and its different interface and ability to combine calendar events and reminders in one place is helpful. I just don't find it to offer anything I can't already do that I need - I prefer keeping my reminders and calendars separate, and entering events is slower but doable. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but if the OP spends more time with the native app, he might find he can save $5. Regarding the native calendar, one difference and perhaps advantage it has over Fantastical 2 is when scheduling appointments. I scheduled an annual event from the native calendar and noticed a new travel time option on the new appointment screen. I haven't used the native calendar in a long time, also preferring Fantastical, but that travel time item must be a new addition in iOS 8. It looks like once you enable this, and then enter the total amount of time it will take to get to your appointment, the calendar will add that time onto the appointment time. I suppose it then would give you an appropriate alert based on the travel and appointment times. For those that use their location services in that way, that sounds very handy. Interesting. I was curious about this after your note. I went in and added travel time to an appointment. Nothing changed in the main listing for that appointment. The travel time only showed if I opened the appointment and double tapped on edit. I could have more easily just entered the travel time in the location field where it would show up by default. Wayne, out of curiosity the other night, I tried that. I scheduled an appointment at 9:00. Based on the location of the appointment and my current location, it said it would take 15 minutes to get there. So, I expected an alert at 8:45. I don't know if I was too close to that time, as it was about 8:30 then, or if I did something else wrong, but I did not get an alert of the appointment at 8:45. Let us know if you find out what that really does. Maybe someone else has better information. Eric P.s. I've not followed this thread, but I do find the time zone support interesting. For a trip last week, I used it when scheduling appointments with mixed results. I would often forget it was correcting for time zone or I would not listen to the entire calendar entry when it says the time in the current zone and for the actual time zone, and I would mentally make adjustments not necessary. That's how I was 2 hours off scheduling transportation at the airport. I just don't find it to offer anything I can't already do that I need - I prefer keeping my reminders and calendars separate, and entering events is slower but doable. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but if the OP spends more time with the native app, he might find he can save $5. I don't see what it offers me, besides far easier appointment adding, that the native app does not. As to listing events, don't flick to them - you'll start way back in the past, as you discovered. Instead, touch the middle of the screen, or wherever the list is displayed, and you will land on the current or nearest event. You can't delete holiday events because those are on a public (read-only) calendar. The hint you hear, and the delete gesture, don't know that, so VoiceOver still presents the option even though it will do nothing. I'm not sure what you mean about not being able to view event details - double tapping an event should open that event. Again
