Yes. You can either expand the speaking bar, by double tapping I think, then
tap on “stop”, or go to settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Speak
screen and turn it off. See if either of those help.

It’s for people with low vision who might not need voiceover. I like it,
because it’ll read a book with the iPhone sleeping, which voiceover can’t do.

Re: Speak screen, Expand speaking bar. What is this?

2021-06-22 Thread Richard Turner
The settings under accessibility, Spoken Content, are mostly directed at people
who do not use VoiceOver.
Speak Selection puts up a button when text is selected so you can have that
text spoken.

Speak screen allows you to swipe down with two fingers from the top of the
screen and have it read; like with Apple Books.
The one advantage speak screen has over VoiceOver is that you can lock the
phone and it keeps reading; which is good if you are reading an apple book; but
not useful if you are using VoiceOver the vast majority of the time.

RE: Speak Screen?

2020-07-25 Thread Richard Turner
Speak screen is primarily for non-VoiceOver users in my opinion.
It allows the screen to be spoken when you do a two finger swipe down from the
top of the screen, i.e. the status bar.
When this is on, you can then lock your phone and it will keep reading.
Some people find this useful when reading Apple eBooks. Since if you lock your
screen when VoiceOver is reading, it stops.

I keep it turned off for myself.

Subject: Speak Screen?

Hi, Everyone.
Every once in a while I manage, usually in YouTube, to bring Siri up while VO
is talking, and I get two readers for the price of one. I think this is the
Speak Screen thing, but I don't know what I do to bring it up. I think there's
a "stop" option. Does anyone know what this is, and what it's for?

Thanks,
Dani

Harry is totally correct.
I was just explaining the main purpose of Speak Screen as the questioner did
not know.
I get almost all of my books from Bookshare; so don't use Apple Books; but I
know that is not available to everyone.

Re: Speak Screen

2020-06-08 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
You do NOT have to choose between VoiceOver and Speak Screen! If you have both
VoiceOver and Speak Screen enabled, you can put focus on the Status bar, do a
2-finger swipe down and, when the voice starts reading, lock the iPhone by
briefly pressing the power button. The voice continues reading on and on with
the screen locked and VoiceOver reads out the page number each time the voice
moves on to a new page of the book. I just did this on my iPhone, locked the
screen and I’m listening to a book purchased from the Apple Books app as I
write this email.

RE: Speak Screen

2020-06-08 Thread Richard Turner
The 2 finger swipe down is a VoiceOver command and will read from wherever you
did the gesture until the end or you stop it reading.
However, if in say, the Apple Books app, you touch the status bar and swipe
down with 2 fingers and lock the phone by pressing the power button, VoiceOver
will stop reading.
But, those who do not use VoiceOver, but want some things read to them can turn
on speak screen, use that same gesture, lock the phone, and the reading will
continue until they stop it or it runs out of things to read.

I have speak screen disabled. I can still swipe
down with two fingers to read the screen. This is a voice over feature.

Carolyn, if you disable, Speak Screen, the 2
finger swipe down gesture from the top of the
screen won't read the screen contents any
longer, that's if you ever use this feature just so you know.

Carolyn,
Check under Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content.
Turn off speak screen and speak selection if they are on.

To be a bit more specific, you initiate speak screen by placing focus on one of
the items in the status bar such as the time and then swipe down with two
fingers.

Carolyn,
Check under Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content.
Turn off speak screen and speak selection if they are on.

Hi Garry and All,

When Kindle changed their app so the status bar no longer shows while you are
in the app, Speak Screen went away.

It only works in apps where the status bar shows.

Perhaps eMailing the developer would be a good idea.

Personally, I now convert Kindle books to ePub and read them in Voice Dream
Reader.

Codex is a nice free piece of software for doing this.

I have a link to it on my web site: www.turner42.com

Hi Richard,

You can start a Speak Screen in the Kindle app by asking Siri to speak the
screen. Since the app doesn't automatically scroll to the next page when the
screen is locked, however, it's not all that useful.

Best,
Anna

Re: Speak screen in Kindle app?

2016-11-08 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Harry and all,

I can't find any way to make the screen scrol while Speak Screen is active in
Kindle books if the screen is locked. This is too bad because it used to be a
nice way to read Kindle books.

The screen will scroll while reading iBooks with Speak Screen and the screen
locked. However, When I tried it, VoiceOver would come on and say something
when the page scrolled. So I guess I would have to mute speech when using this
feature. I also noticed that when using Speak screen, there are no playback
controls on the lock screen, as I'm pretty sure there used to be. The Magic Tap
works, so at least it's easy to stop the speaking.

At one point, though, I got into a situation where doing the magic tap would
alternate between reading my book and playing my previous podcast. The only way
I could stop this was to ask Siri to stop speaking the screen.

In short, Speak Screen doesn't seem to be as useful as it was in the past. If
anyone is finding it useful, please let us know how you're using it.

Cheers,
Anna

Hi Harry and all,

I just tried this and had the same experience; the phone didn't turn the page
when I got to the end. I know it used to do this. I'll try going through the
Kindle settings to see if I can find anything that might help.

Re: Speak Screen

2015-07-21 Thread Alex Hall
Enable it in the usual accessibility settings area. Once on, touch the status
bar and do a two-finger swipe down. After a few seconds, Speak Screen will
start reading the screen using the voice and speed you set in Settings. You can
change the speed, as well as seek through the audio, using the bar at the top
of the screen which will appear when speech begins.

Re: Speak screen does not work in mbraille

2015-03-16 Thread Alex Hall
My understanding is the same. MBraille and similar apps type text, but they
save it internally; the actual screen holds only the keyboard. Braille Screen
Input in iOS itself will work just fine, I imagine, because text is actually
entered in real time.

Re: Speak screen does not work in mbraille

2015-03-16 Thread Christopher Hallsworth
I believe apps like MBraille and even BrailleTouch for those who still
have it do not represent the actual text on-screen until the text is
exported one way or another.

Hi all, I wanted to share this with you. I thought that I would try speak
screen in Mbraille. to read my very long journal document. I tried it and I
told Siri to launch it. She said sorry there is nothing to read here. I tried
it again and it still didn't work. So I guess when we Braelinn the screen there
is no text that shows up. Many of you may have known this, but I did not.

Braille Screen Input was Re: Speak screen does not work in mbraille

2015-03-16 Thread christopher hallsworth
Correct, however with contracted Braille input the text is held in some kind of
buffer until you press space or newline. This is because the translator can't
figure out otherwise if for example you mean b or but. There is a gesture
to translate the word immediately though: two finger flick down.

My understanding is the same. MBraille and similar apps type text, but they
save it internally; the actual screen holds only the keyboard. Braille Screen
Input in iOS itself will work just fine, I imagine, because text is actually
 entered in real time.
