Hi Alan,

I don’t know why you, Rose and some others have no luck with Talking Goggles. I
just redownloaded it on my 5S and it works just fine, if anything I’d say it
reads more and better than it did last time I used it which was quite some time
ago.

I just tried talking goggles too and no results. To bad too because talking
googles worked great for me when trying to read the digital display on my
washing machine.

Hi Sieghard.

The app I found with the name AIPoly is called AIPoly vision,, is this the
correct one? I can not find the video tab but a tab called objects.

Hope someone can help.

I miss a replacement for goggles it does not work anymore.

Best regards Annie.

I just installed AIPoly and it definitely has potential. A nice, simple layout
and on my 5S it automatically announced what it say after a couple of seconds.
I was pointing it at various areas in the room I am currently in and it said
things like “Closet”, “Door”, “Furniture”, “Curtains” etc.

I then held a bottle of generic Tylonol 1 up to it, this is the stuff we can
get here in Canada that has 8mg of Codeine as well as some Caffeine along with
whatever the normal Tylonol incredient is and the generic name is
“acetaminophen” and all AIPoly told me when I showed it various views of the
bottle was “Pills”, “Medicine” or “prescription”.

I then used Talking Goggles on it in video mode and it read all sorts of stuff
to me including a lot number, expiry date, the word “acetaminophen”, “8mg
Codeine” etc. Definitely a lot more useful than “Medicine” or “Pills”.

After trying AIpoly, I was a little disappointed. I didn't try the object part,
is that subjective, and how you hold the camera, and where your objects are.
What you think you're aiming yet, you might not be. However, the color part,
disappointed me. I had a top on, which I knew was blue with white snowflakes. I
can understand the color coming back as gray, since the blue-and-white might
merge at some point but pink? Or purple? I don't think so. Black pants, or
black coat, came back gray, dark blue, so I was a little disappointed in the
color. Perhaps I was aiming incorrectly as well. I'm going to try the goggles
app, and see how it does too.

Hello,

you can't bypass, without disabling. As said, though, haven't tried your

Hello,
Not Alan, but there are 5 pages. The fifth says you're now ready to go or
something, and neither did flicking, and or explore by touch yielded anything,
but turning off VO, and randomly touching the screen has worked 4 out of 4
attempts.

2016-01-08 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
The first time through it will ask you, twice in my case, if I wanted to give
aipoly access to my camera, which of course you want to do. If you don't the
app won't work. Keith

This is not correct, you can get through the welcome screens of Aipoly and use
the app just fine without ever disabling Voiceover.
You just do a right to left 3-finger swipe to move through the welcome screens,
the last swipe when you are on the fifth welcome screen will take you to the
main screen of the app. You can now double tap the Toggle Aipoly button to
start and point the iPhone at objects you want to recognize. You may have to
touch the screen once at the beginning somewhere in the middle to hear the
result, once focus is on that result/area of the screen it will read
automatically as you point elsewhere.

Are you sure it didn’t say “bald monkey” or “old geezer”? *grin*

I haven’t yet had the courage to try it on my face, afraid it will say
“Neanderthal”, “ugly kraut” or something like that.

Assuming the “it” you are talking about is AIPoly, did you give it permission
to use the camera?

If you toggle VoiceOver off while using the app, it speaks with its own voice,
or rather the iPhone’s own voice.

Otherwise, you have to get the VoiceOver focus on the spot just about the
toggle AIPoly button so VoiceOver can read the information.

Hi Alan,

I don’t know why you, Rose and some others have no luck with Talking Goggles. I
just redownloaded it on my 5S and it works just fine, if anything I’d say it
reads more and better than it did last time I used it which was quite some time

RE: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Kerri,

Talking Goggles was updated in mid August last year so I would say yes, it is
still being updated although there has been no update since iOS 9 came out, but
since it seems to work fine there may not be a reason to update it.

I haven't tried VizWiz in a long time and I don't think it's even I the app
store any more. Last time I tried it maybe a year ago I still had no answer 24
hours after I submitted a question. I suggest that if you can't get anywhere
with Camfind, Tap Tap See or Talking Goggles you might want to give "Be my
Eyes" a try. It is free and it's supposed to connect you to an actual person
via Facetime in a secure way (they will not see your phone number, where you
are from etc.) and you can ask them questions and show them whatever you want
to know about. Crowdvis does the same thing, but I think there is a small
charge after a few free trial calls.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi:
I have Goggles on my phone.
Is it still being updated and maintained and everything? Is it still usable?
Should I uninstall Goggles and install Ipolly instead?
I also have VizWiz...is that app still usable?
Thanks!

RE: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Krister,

With Aipoly you really don’t need much skill. If you can point your iPhone in
the direction you are looking or pointing and you can hold it more or less
vertical it will see the object and speak it.

I won’t go over all the instructions on how to get through the intro screens of
Aipoly again since it’s been explained several times now by Pamela, Richard,
myself and others.

Annie, yes, the Object tab is where you want to be for object recognition, the
colour tab is where you want to be if you want to identify colours. Then all
you have to do is double tap the “Toggle Aipoly” button, not sure why the
developers didn’t just label it “Start” or “Start Recognizing”, maybe somebody
can suggest to them they should change this as it would be more descriptive.

Sieghard

Hi,

I think the whole thing about this is that you have to be skilled in handling
the camera on the phone or iPad in order for it to work. I have never learned
to take photos or handle the camera on the phone because i have always thought
and still think that i as a blind person never am able to take satisfactory
pictures without a whole truckload of guesswork so i’ve left that bit alone and
so my results with apps like Goggles and Aipoly is soso at best. Only thing i
can do is congratulate all those who actually can make it work because i can’t
but that’s not the programs fault, it’s entirely mine.

get here in Canada that has 8mg of Codeine as well as some Caffeine along with
whatever the normal Tylonol incredient is and the generic name is
“acetaminophen” and all AIPoly told me when I showed it various views of the
bottle was “Pills”, “Medicine” or “prescription”.

I then used Talking Goggles on it in video mode and it read all sorts of stuff
to me including a lot number, expiry date, the word “acetaminophen”, “8mg
Codeine” etc. Definitely a lot more useful than “Medicine” or “Pills”.

RE: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

You do the same 3-finger swipe from left to right you use to switch home pages.
Once on the last welcome screen you swipe one more time and you are then on the
main screen of the app. That particular screen is layed out in a simple and
easy to figure out way with 4 tabs along the bottom: Object, Colour (for colour
identification), Settings and Info.

Above that there is a “Pencil” button on the right (above Info tab and a
“Toggle Aipoly” button (sort of above the Settings and Colour tabs).

Right now I have my iPhone 5S laying camera down on a table which means it
can’t really see anything so it also says on the screen “Point me at an object
and press the button”.

The “Toggle Aipoly” button is basically your start button, when you first open
the app you have to double tap on that so it starts “seeing” things.

I now figured out how it reads automatically as well. First when I started it
it wouldn’t say anything, then I touched the middle of the screen and it said
“Dresser” because I was pointing I t towards the dresser in the bedroom. I then
moved it a bit to the left and it then said “Curtains” so it seems that once
you put focus on the area of the screen where it shows the result of what it
sees, it will then read automatically if you move the phone and it sees
something else.

As Richard pointed out, if you turn Voiceover off it will also read what it
sees with I think the compact voice, but it certainly isn’t necessary to turn
off Voiceover as long as you put focus on the result once and then don’t touch
anything else.

It will sometimes also say “Background” or “I’m not sure” if it can’t identify
what it is seeing.

All in all not a bad start although as I said yesterday, it failed badly when
it comes to identifying a specific type of medication I showed it, all it said
was Pills, Medicine or Prescription. I haven’t tried it yet with food items,
cans and so on, but my guess is that it would just tell you it’s a can. Maybe
down the road they can make it do more.

Sieghard

Hi Richard,

On my 5S it is reading what is sees automatically and that is with Voiceover on.

Alan, can you describe exactly what happens after you open he app? Do you swipe
through all the intro screens? If so, what does it do when you are on the main
screen?

Assuming the “it” you are talking about is AIPoly, did you give it permission
to use the camera?

If you toggle VoiceOver off while using the app, it speaks with its own voice,
or rather the iPhone’s own voice.

Otherwise, you have to get the VoiceOver focus on the spot just about the
toggle AIPoly button so VoiceOver can read the information.

RE: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-08 Thread Richard Turner
Assuming the “it” you are talking about is AIPoly, did you give it permission
to use the camera?

If you toggle VoiceOver off while using the app, it speaks with its own voice,
or rather the iPhone’s own voice.

Otherwise, you have to get the VoiceOver focus on the spot just about the
toggle AIPoly button so VoiceOver can read the information.

Re: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-08 Thread Wayne Merritt
In AiPoly, in order to hear the descriptions read continuously, you
will have to turn VoiceOver off. This is after you hit the button to
recognize an object. I have had mixed success with it, some things it
gets right and some, well, not so much. It identified a can of diet
soda as lotion, medicine, and a bank note. It is entertaining to
change the setting for object recognition to likelihood and fun, just
to hear what it says even if the object is identified wrong.

Hello,
Goggles don't work for me, at all. As for the other, open the screen, select
the items tab, go on the top, there's something that sounds like hit the

you what it is. My hand is skin, the cat is fur, etc.

Hi:

Is it still being updated and maintained and everything? Is it still usable?
Should I uninstall Goggles and install Ipolly instead?
I also have VizWiz...is that app still usable?

Re: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-08 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
I think the whole thing about this is that you have to be skilled in handling
the camera on the phone or iPad in order for it to work.

Hi Sieghard.

The app I found with the name AIPoly is called AIPoly vision,, is this the
correct one? I can not find the video tab but a tab called objects.

Hope someone can help.

I miss a replacement for goggles it does not work anymore.
Best regards Annie.

RE: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-07 Thread Merv Keck
I was teaching a class today and while waiting for a student to arrive I
demonstrated AIPoly to a visually impaired student who was wearing a white
sweater and it said underwear, laughs! She was a little intrigued I think,

Regards,

Sieghard
