RE: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com
Hi Pablo, Every iPhone has an accelerometer and a gyroscope which senses motion. You can't turn these off and I think what Anthony was referring to is that he turned "On" the "Reduce Motion" option in Accessibility Settings. First of all this will save a small amount of battery and it may help a bit with touch screen sensitivity. If you turn Reduced Motion on you are not turning of the sensors in your iPhone, it just has to do with some visual effects of iOS 7. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Pablo Morales Sent: Monday, October 21, 2013 8:48 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com Hi. Re: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com
I had a leveling app. It was free except, I can't remember the name. It did let you set the calibration. You started out placing your iPhone even if it was in a case on a flat surface and double tapping the calibrate button. Then you were prompted to place your iPhone on it's side with the up/down buttons on the top and again double tapping the calibrate button and then place your iPhone on standing up with the lock switch on the top right and double tapping the calibrate button. The iPhone was then calibrated and gave a containing tone to let you know it was level. They make note of the fact that although the app could come very close it should only be used for things like leveling pictures and non creditable jobs. It might even be in the apps in my apps folder. If I find it, I'll post it's name. As I recall, it was even free but I seem to think it was a part of a tools package. The other apps weren't accessible. --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! Move out. Get a job. RE: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com
Beat both of you guys. (lol) I got mine last Tuesday. It's amazing how they ship these. My phone's origin scan was in China on Saturday the 5th and in my hands Tuesday morning the 8th. It went from China, to Korea, to Alaska, to Kentucky to my home in South Florida. Pretty impressive. I am getting my 5S tomorrow (HaHaHa, beat you) and I certainly appreciated Cara posting this because at least one has a chance to specifically test for these issues. I am a woodworker and I do build things and do my own renovations/modifications to my home to a large degree, but it's not like I'd ever use my iPhone as my authorative level, it's much to short to be really precise. I have a dedicated audio level and even that is only 12 inches and there is a reason why framers use 4 foot long levels. I can see how this might affect hard-core gamers which I am not and I suspect it will be an academic problem for me, certainly not enough to scare me off like Pablo who cancelled his order, but if I wasn't in a big hurry and my iPhone wasn't due to arrive tomorrow I might consider that. Anyhow, I have 1 year of warranty and I bought Apple Care so I am quite convinced that if I could replicate this issue and it was quite serious I could get a replacement in a couple of month when Apple has made the appropriate modifications. On a general note, I think it must be a real nightmare to discover all of these bugs and get them fixed. There are so many functions and features some of which are very specific. My 5s is off by 3 degrees just as mentioned on the Today in IOS show. Hopefully, there will be a patch out soon correcting this. According to many sources, this issue can be replicated on almost every single iPhone 5S - or at least the first few early batches of them. A good test would be to place your iPhone 5S on a flat table and see if the level reading in the compass app is accurate. I'm actually more interested in hearing from people whose phones give accurate readings, because those phones seem to be the exception rather than the rule. I think that the app might due in a pinch if your hanging a picture or that kind of thing. For anything really serious, it won't cut it. I don't care what model iPhone you use it on and there are better other leveling apps. You have to try them 1 by 1 to see which works best for your needs. If you really need it to be level, there are several on the market which will beep a steady tone when it's level that work much better. --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! Assuming the surface is in fact level and the phone is lying completely flat, your phone does seem to be giving a false reading. Like you, I don't imagine relying on the motion sensors for anything mission critical like building or woodworking. Still, it would be nice to think that all the phones met their specifications. Listen to the latest Today in iOs Podcast, Rob covers this issue and apparently it is a 3 degree difference and Rob was told to just wait for an update to fix this. The article indicated that this maybe hardware related and not a software issue, but it almost sounds like it might just be a software issue. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of John Diakogeorgiou Sent: Monday, October 14, 2013 7:37 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com Just out of curiousity I tried using the level with my wife's 5 and my 5s which was received the Tuesday after they went on sale. On a general note, I think it must be a real nightmare to discover all of these bugs and get them fixed. There are so many functions and features some of which are very specific. I know it's easy to say "How can Apple release a phone which has such obvious bugs" or "How can they release iOS 7 when it has such obvious bugs". But it's always easier to play Monday morning Quarterback and to draw on what tens of millions users report in the first few weeks of using a new iiOS or a new device. RE: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com
Hi Grant, Some apps do use the compass (Blindsquare is one) but I am not sure if the variance described is enough to make a real difference. RE: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com
My iPhone 5S will arrive by Thursday. I don't plan to box it up and return it if I can replicate the issues, but I'll certainly be disappointed. I suspect that this will not mess up blindness specific navigation apps too much, because I don't think they tend to rely on the compass. I suspect Apple may tweak future batches of the iPhone 5S so that the motion sensors work as expected, but this of course means that millions of units which don't meet specs will be in circulation.
