RE: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Hi Katey, While I've never experienced this issue on my 5 S, I know several people who have. A friend of mine and I were able to resolve his problem by doing the following: Oh, I almost forgot. Please be sure to backup your phone before you begin. I strongly suggest that you backup your device to iTunes rather than to the cloud--especially in this kind of situation. 1. Make sure your device is not connected to your computer. 2. From the Settings menu, select General. 3. Select Reset. 4. Select Reset All Settings. Please note that this is a non-destructive reset. It will not erase any of your media content or apps. It will, however, reset many system settings including VoiceOver configuration. 5. Once the reset is complete, make sure that the Volume option is not active in the VoiceOver Rotor. Never, never attempt to adjust volume via the Rotor until this bug is resolved. 6. From the Settings menu, select Sounds. 7. Make certain that the change with option is set to off. Now you should be able to adjust VoiceOver independently of the ringer volume. Experiment with this to make sure you're up and running. If you're feeling lucky: 8. Attach your phone to the computer and use iTunes to restore from your latest backup. If all goes well, restoring your phone will not impact VoiceOver to the extent that it engages the bug. I recently updated my iPhone 4S to a 5s, and I was aware of the bug where you have the volume in the roter. I knew one should't go below 35% and that it couldn't go above 90%. IAfter my update I still had volume in the roter, and it was on 45% and wouldn't go above that! I didn't dare go below that. I still have my 4s, which I can go all the way to 1% to 100% successfully each and every time. So, how do I get my VO volume to go up to 100%? Should I sync my iPhone 4S with the computer with it up to 100% in the roter volume and then sync my 5s so that volume is at 100% and then lower it to say 75% and take volume out of the roter? Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Mark, Thanks for the tip. I may wind up trying that. But If I sync my phone with my mac and then reset it after syncing it, wont' the volume come back in the rotor or the volume which it was set at be there? What I was thinking of doing was exactly what you said, going to settings general reset and the first option reset all settings. I know that all my accessibility settings as well as my battery saving tips which I put in my 4s will be gone (and all papers as well). I can manually go back and reset them -- I still have my 4s and thus I could easily go through the menus and put back the ones I want-- minus the volume in the rotor. I guess what I want to know is this a software or hardware bug? Thanks again, Katey A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart. Here's a copy of the email I sent to apple Good Morning/Afternoon, My name is Catherine Glass and I've been using an iPhone since the 3GS came out with accessibility, I had a 3GS, 4s and now a 5s. Unfortunately, I write today to report a bug which I, and many other blind/visually impaired VoiceOver users seem to be having with our brand new 5s units. This bug involved the VO volume in the rotor. I have had this selected on my 4s and it worked as expected, raising my VO volume independently of the system sounds from 1% to 100%. However, after receiving my brand new 5s this weekend, and restoring it from a backup of my 4s, the volume when I flick up is stuck at 45%. While I can raise and lower the volume using the volume buttons on the side, the system sounds -- ringers and alerts are rather loud. If us lower the volume of sounds the VO voice gets way too low. I am a person who has some usable vision and I can see that when I press the volume up button to raise the VO volume the little symbol which tells how high the volume is almost to the top and still VO voice is somewhat low in volume. This is not the case with my 4s. I can make the system sounds rather loud and have VO speak softly. If I put VO volume in my rotor it’s stuck at 45%. What should I do to fix this issue? I have a brand new iPhone 64 Gig, silver on the ATT network. I got this through the ATT store. Any information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Catherin, do you have change with buttons turned on in settings? That would explained that volume change. I have it turned off and I don't have the volume included in the rotor because I want my phone to ring at it's maximum according to the master/over all volume. --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! RE: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Hi Katey, I strongly suspect that the glitch is one that is located in the software. If you don't mind putting all your settings back again, definitely skip step 8. I’m not certain if restoring the phone will put VO back in the rotor. If it does, then just remove it. Restoring the phone may set the volume level to its previous setting but it should not expose the glitch. I did the following on my iPhone 5 and it worked. This does not mean it will work on the 5S, which I do not have. Remove volume from the rotor. Be somewhere where a two-finger flick up will cause VO to do a lot of reading. Perform the two-finger flick up and, whilst VO is talking, press the volume down button until no sound is heard. Now, do another two-finger flick up. Though it cannot be heard, VO will start reading the screen again, the same way, and at the same speed. Press the volume up button rapidly until VO reaches its maximum volume. From this point, do not press the volume buttons when VO is speaking. Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Hello, Yes VO volume will adjust with the volume buttons, but when I lower it using the buttons my VO ring volume decreases and I do have adjust with side volume turned to off and so the VO voice and the allerts are both low despite the slider telling me the ringer volume is 84%. It didn't work like this on my 4s. When the slider was at a high volume, the system and allert sounds were loud and VO spoke softly. Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Please note: I did not say that the feature was working properly. I specifically stated the method I used to get VO to go above 35%. The fact is, all of the iPhone's volumes will go down to 0. Then, all of VO's volumes will come back up, bringing VO above 35% with the master volume. After this point, VO should remain in-sync with the master volume. This is merely a work-around until Apple repairs the volume issue for VO. It didn't work like this on my 4s. When the slider was at a high volume, the system and allert sounds were loud and VO spoke softly. Any help and insights would be appreciated. Katey Sent from my iPad -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
