Re: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
I haven't thought I would use Siri very much, but after reading the list of things added, I can see myself using it a little on the new iPhone. If I want to know what's on my calendar, then I can always look in the notification center for that, or even in the calendar if there are a lot of appointments. It would be handy if we could use Siri in the calendar to go to certain dates, like November 14, 2013, or "Siri, what day is December 2 on this year?" That would be a good functional use of Siri. I don't see myself using Siri for typing or the dictation feature since that's why I have Fleksy and a Bluetooth keyboard, but who knows. I think that Siri has matured nicely and there are some cool features of it in iOS6, but it's going to likely take some more maturing for me to use everyday and rely upon it like I know many people on this list and other places do. That said, I was impressed this morning when I had to call Apple for an issue related to reading through carrier and terms of service agreements that I was told to confirm before the iPhone is sent to me. I had trouble typing in the correct log-in information and finally called Apple after several tries. This wasn't an issue I could correctly summarize using their voice response system. Still, after a couple of tries and speaking in my normal soft to moderate voice volume, the system transferred me to a representative that was able to help me. I recall thinking, "Wow, if this is an example of Siri functionality, then I may use it more than I thought I would." Regards, Wayne Merritt On 9/16/12, Raul A. Re: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Hello Scott, personally I use Siri a lot for making reminders, appointments, and setting alarms and timers. I also do the occasional thing like asking it the distance between two points if I'm too lazy to go to Google to do that. Lastly, I use the dictation keyboard quite a lot. Not exactly Siri, but the dictation button on the keyboard is great for emailing, texting, and even doing app searches in the app store. -- Raul A. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Is anyone aware whether or not Siri will have real time multi-language capabilities or if you'd still have to hassel with going into the settings and manually changing the language input since it's now supposed to get Spanish? I time to time fiddle with the German to practice my pronunciation on certain words and phrases figuring that at least if Siri understands me, then I'm doing it half way decent. With the Spanish support, I would have every intention to use it in that particular language. Re: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
You know I just want to ask Siri "where the hell am I?" Oh wait there is an app for that. :) Seriously it would be great if Siri could say "hey you fool your at the corner of 3rd and Main." "There is a nice bar nearby and you should stop and have a couple since you seem a little aggravated." Now that would be a really good use for Siri. Oh maybe I could say "Siri, where's my wife?" "why she's three isles over, so you still have a chance to make a run for it!" :) Yep, I'm thinking Siri could really mature into something quite useful. :) On Sep 15, 2012, at 2:28 PM, Mary Otten wrote: > I use the dictation feature of siri a lot. They have not said a word about pedestrian routes. I'm thinking we'll be very lucky if they include that option. All their examples were around driving. Time will tell. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Hi Mary, You can already ask SIRI "Where am I" and get a pretty darn close address. I just asked that sitting at my desk and it gave an address only 4 numbers off from our house address, but that is probably because my desk is on the south side of the house, near the number she gave. Now, it doesn't give nearby intersections, but this isn't bad. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Hi, When SIRI works, I use it mostly for setting appointments, which I have to do quite a bit. Also for the times when I just want to say a few things in an Email, or the occasional asking for information that I'm too lazy to type into a search field, grin. However, with the new added feature of being able to launch apps, I'll probably use it more. By-the-way, Jason, you may want to make sure your comments are at the top of the message instead of at the end of all the other replies in a topic. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
I happen to use Siri as I will do anything not to have to use the screen. If it wasn't for the Bluetooth keyboard I wouldn't even have an iPhone! I can find apps and stuff on the screen but other than that it's totally Siri, keyboard or dictation for me. Hope no one flames me for that. And since I am in the complaining mood, if Apple gives SIRI the ability to open any app why not include things like turning WiFi, Bluetooth or Airplane Mode on and off by simply telling SIRI to do so and to give me an answer when I say "What's the battery level" rather than asking me if I want to search the web for "What's the battery level". Even my old HTC Windows 6.1 Smartphone with Microsoft Voice Command could do this. OK, I do admit that I do not want my HTC back, but who cares about what's playing in the movie theatre or who directed Toy Story yet I can't ask it the simplest things about my phone. Re: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
I've been using Siri to set the timer whenever I put something in the oven. I also use the dictation to send text messages. I also use Siri to make phone calls or play music. For example, play all songs by The Rippingtons or play Magical. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Scott and others, I use SIRI all the time, there simply is no easier way to set an appointment, a reminder, alarm or timer. Dictation for me works very well most of the time and I guess it will only get better. I can't wait for the business search and map/turn by turn related stuff to work here in Canada which so far it has not. I also find the Wolfram Alpha capabilities very useful, how often has somebody listened to an audio book or read an eBook only to come across a word you aren't quite sure about or the name of a historical person. The other day I read a book review and came across the word "dystopian". Now maybe many of you know what it means, but even though I have lived in Canada for half my 45-year long life and consider myself to be completely bi-lingual I did not know this word. So I simply pushed the Home Key on my 4S and asked SIRI "Define dystopian". SIRI took about 2 seconds to look it up and gave me a concise and satisfying definition. Can I do the same on Google or Wikipedia? Yes, but the SIRI way is much easier. The same goes for unit conversions or if I want to quickly know something about a particular country such as it's size or population. I think many of the people who don't use SIRI a lot haven't quite realized how much you can ask and of course you can ask even more as of next week. As far as dictation is concerned Scott mentioned he forgets the punctuation. When I first started using dictation more I realized that just like learning how to be good with Fleksy, getting good results with dictation requires some practice and discipline because you can't just start putting down your thoughts as you would with a keyboard where even a very fast typer has time to think how to best say something and it's easy to backspace or edit what you have written. With dictation you have to get it right the first time, you can't put in long pauses and filler words we often use in conversation. I find I have to often take a few seconds and organize what I want to say in my mind before I start dictating. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Hi Scott, I don't use Siri that much. Like you, I find myself using the dictation feature a little more than in the past. Regarding anything else, I seems like more work than the results provided. In all fairness, perhaps I need to put more time into learning what the correct way to ask Siri for information. Scott, I use it regularly, although because of the inconsistent performance of Siri, not as much as when it worked properly. Thanks this is great I see quite a number of good commands that are new to the system. Possibility of future evolution? Does anyone else on the list considering our group take note of the who is near me command? I assume naturally that will only work at this time with folks who have iPhones, but the future possibilities for us blind folks are quite interesting. Re: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
I agree. I really do not care if SIRI knows or can look up trivia crap instead of having real functional capabilities related to controling the device itself. Yes thanks for what they have added though. Of course it all depends on getting a response from server side technology that is pushed as such a great idea. Siri should be able to process at least some things on the device itself. That's something else even windows voice commander could do. RE: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?
Hi List, This all sounds pretty good, but a few things I am ondering about are this: I dial a number or tell SIRI to call somebody and the line is busy. Why can't I say after a minute or even 10 minutes: Redial" or "Redial my last call"? This doesn't work now and I have not heard any examples about this. Also, I am very curious whether it is finally going to be possible to enter just a business name in the company field, for example, United Airlines, and then to say "Call United Airlines". I do of course imply here that I also enter the correct phone number for uUnited Airlines, but currently you have to also enter the company name as the last name (I guess you could do first name, but I prefer to use last name for sort reasons) in order to make it possible to voice dial with SIRI. I'd also hope you can ask something like "Who called me last" and after SIRI announces this to say "Call back the last person who called me" or, in the context of the earlier question simply "Call that number" or "Call them".
