Re: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth
In regular, 6-dot Braille, before the switch to UEB, dots 4-6 together would mean whatever word you were writing next was either Italicized, bolded, or underlined. If you were doing this to more than 3 words in a row, you'd put dots 4-6 twice before the first word, then once before the last word. To capitalize something, you just put a dot 6 in front of it. Ok, but then you use up an extra cell for a capital letter? to all, i hhad been braillist ats chool for blind for the rest of 13 years. i got along with six-dot and eight-d ot. when i do duxbury, it is always six-dot after converting print documents into braille. i get them embossed into braille materials and pass the books and others to kids. on iphone, if you use iphone, you get braille display, then hit space bar plus dot 2,3,6 as you would notice option fro eight-dot to six-dot. you can enjoy reading books and texts on six-dot option. no problems. janet, like deaf read captions on tv, i did read captions. sometimes i noticed some typo errors. i had to get used to this as i did follow the captions so well. now i am totally deafblind, i can't see captions anymore. i do get notes form friends who say sometimes they can't read cpations due to tech changes. same idea siri can say words but people are careless not to edit. once i got email from the city's ada coordinator who is sighted and hearing. i read his email and i reminded him that he was using siri. he was shocked as everyone who are my city-county task force on disabilities laughtedas he asked me how i know. is said because he didn't edit it as when he said about his frustration with his co-workers. he said, "bare with me..." and i remind him to look at the word and he got bylushed. i am sure everyone laughing as he was tryign to say "bear with me..." that is all. sincerely, rich On 2/4/2018 1:21 AM, Richard Turner wrote: The extra two dots allow you to have a cursor so you actually know where you are editing. But as someone pointed out, that is not the target audience for the BrailleMe device. I'm just glad there are finally braille displays that are affordable. The more the merrier. The Braille Me has two methods of showing the cursor. I would have preferred 8 dots myself but I get their reasoning for doing 6. If you just want to read braille like books, 6 dots is fine and $450 is a heck of a lot better than three thousand or so. My wife just wants a simple note taker to take to doctors, etc. and I just want to read NLS braille books from the library. I used an 18-cell Braille lite for years and managed just fine. We can have two Braille me devices for less than a thousand. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Anouk Radix Sent: Sunday, February 4, 2018 8:16 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth Hi, I personally like 8-dot braille for showing where the cursor is and for showing capital letters. The extra two dots allow you to have a cursor so you actually know where you are editing. The cursor is dots 7 and 8. And, by the way, I grew up with six dots as well. Also if someone wanted to read in computer braille, you have to have the extra dots. But as someone pointed out, that is not the target audience for the BrailleMe device. I'm just glad there are finally braille displays that are affordable. The more the merrier. The Focus works very well with laptops, iPhones, and other devices. You can update the firmware yourself. I have done it. It is not bulky. It is very sturdy. Especially the new fifth gen 40 and 14.. I still wish they had a 20 instead of a 14 but both the 20 and 14 are great. RE: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth
I have only just reviewed this thread and its very interesting. As for me, I would never consider purchasing anything other than a 40 cell Braille display. I own a 20 cell Braille display but find it very fatiguing to use. Currently, I'm using a Focus 40 Blue that I obtained in 2013. All I can say is that it is a true workhorse. I have used it for hundreds and hundreds of Braille input hours and countless more for Braille output. In fact, I used it to obtain my EBAE and UEB Braille Proofreading and EBAE and UEB Braille Transcriber certification licenses. It works beautifully with iOS 11.x. Were I to purchase a new Braille display, based on my past experience and given the fact that I am a Jaws for Windows user, I would stick with Freedom Scientific products. Does it work well in combination with laptops or is it to deep so that you have to reach too far back?
