Hi, the question of backup can be split many different ways. In the end
it's up to the individual to decide what's best for him/her. Jonathan
brings up some good points and I agree with his reasons and I also use
iTunes as my main backup source. Yes, the risk of my hard drive crashing
will make that a waste, but life is all about decision making and risks.
Recently I was helping out a consumer choosing between online backup
solutions with companies like Carbonite and/or Mozy VS home backups like
with Casper and a second internal or external hard drive. In the end she
ended up going with the Casper solution and a second drive because the
quick and ease and easy access of getting a lost file ore recovering
from a crashed hard drive was more important to her than the superior
reliability and the need to trust an online company like Carbonite to
keep your data safe. Not only that, but her computer skills are such
that navigating the Carbonite interface was problematic for her whereas
using the Casper solution was very easy and she could understand it
better. She purchased an external AC powered Western Digital 2 tb hard
drive and we have Casper set up so when she connects it to the pc, it
automatically runs, performs the backup, and safely removes the drive
from the operating system. Then when it's done, she puts it away in a
fireproof safe which she has. She's a lawyer and keeping control of her
documents is key to her. So, while online backup methods have their
merits, so do home solutions.

Thanks.

This looks very cool.

I've looked at their site. Is a complete disk image the only option, or can one
simply back up data if that's all one wants to do?

Certainly, I'd like a backup of the whole disc, but Would I need to do that
every time I wanted to just keep a backup of newer data? Say, I delete an
important Word document unintentionally, I just want to go get that file and
not re-image my whole disc.

I'm new to all this, so please excuse if naïve.

Thanks. Keith

2014-05-04 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Brian, I don't know for sure because I've not had to try. But if you were to
uncheck the checkbox for encryption, go into Preferences and delete all your
existing backups, check the checkbox again and give it a fresh password, that
might work. There may be some security measure preventing this though, perhaps
a Google will give us the answer.

Hi, I would have to disagree with those who say the answer to this question
is a matter of opinion. The question asked specifically about the best means
of backing up. Not the easiest or the most convenient, but the best. There
is in my view only one answer to the question when it's phrased this way,
and it is this. The best way to back up your device is with an encrypted
 backup in iTunes. Here's why.
An encrypted backup is the only way of backing up passwords and other
sensitive data. If you restore from an iCloud backup and log into apps like
Skype, or similar apps requiring you to sign in, you'll need to sign in
again. Encrypt your backup on iTunes and you avoid this hassle.
The point has already been made in this thread about the desirability of an
iTunes backup if you keep old copies of apps for accessibility reasons. But
there's more to it. Your apps are not backed up to iCloud at all, and when
you restore using this method, the latest version of the app is downloaded.
But what if you have an app that has been pulled from the store, either by
Apple, or by the developer because they no longer wish to support it? The
answer is, restore from iCloud and you're just out of luck. You've lost that
 app for good.
iCloud backups don't back up your music. If all your music comes from the
iTunes Store, or you have iTunes Match, this is no problem at all, but it's
a consideration if you spent lots of time initially syncing music from your
computer. You can of course sync with your computer after restoring from an
iCloud backup, but if you have to do that, you may as well do the whole
thing from iTunes and enjoy the benefits.
Personally, I use both methods just for safety's sake. My devices back up to
iCloud every night, but when I connect to iTunes, I manually initiate an
encrypted backup. That way, if I'm travelling without my computer and need
to get up and running again, I can, but iTunes is my first restore
preference for the above reasons. So it's certainly possible to use both.
No doubt iCloud is the most convenient from a set it and forget it point of
 view.

Re: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread Alan Lemly
The best way to back up your iPhone is the way that provides you with the
opportunity to restore everything you need if your phone is lost or has to be
reactivated and reset to default settings.

iCloud may be the easiest way to backup but I don't believe you can backup your
Apps to iCloud which could be an issue if you're not running the latest version
of an app. Also, you only get 5GB free with iCloud so how much you can backup
without paying could be limited.

I prefer backing up my iPhone 5 to an external hard drive using iTunes and
making sure all my Apps and data are on the computer as well.

Different strokes for different folks.

RE: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Lori,

It's a matter of opinion but for the most flexibility in terms of rolling
back to a previous version of an app which may have been broken in the most
current version, backing up to a computer is best. Further, if you can
keep your iTunes library on an external hard drive, you will be better
protected against losing your library in case the computer ever goes
belly-up. Also, keeping your Library on an external drive allows you the
freedom of having multiple computers to have full access to your library.

At best, however, the iTunes library is an absolute mess in its
implementation so do not be disheartened if you find it difficult to grasp
the finer points of iTunes back-end data management.

iTunes was not originally designed to do what it now does; however, by the
time Apple realized this, it was far too late to do a complete redesign for
fear of alienating hundreds of thousands of customers.

Re: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread David Chittenden
The least expensive, quickest, and complete way to back up one's iPhone is with
iTunes. iCloud gives 5 GB storage. Anything more requires annual payment.
iTunes, on the other hand, can utilise whatever storage is available on one's
computer.

Recovering from iTunes takes significantly less time than recovering from
iCloud. After all, USB 2 or USB 3 is very significantly faster than a WIFI
internet connection.

That said, iCloud permits automatic back up every 24 hours without the user
ever having to do anything after the initial set up.

Finally, iTunes provides much more flexibility than iCloud around what to back
up, what to restore to the iPhone, and backing up / restoring apps that are no
longer available on the App Store.

RE: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Alan,

You are correct, of course. However, one thing I'd like to add is that,
generally speaking, it only takes a few minutes to back up a device to a
computer.

I have a 64GB iPhone 5 S. I sync it to my iTunes Library on/through a
six-year-old Windows 7 Desktop computer. Generally speaking, it takes less
than 10 minutes to either sync new purchases and/or tracks to the Library.
This includes making a backup at the same time. At last count, I have over
2000 music tracks on my iPhone along with 40 episodes of television
situation comedies, 4 full-length movies, over 100 applications, and much,
much more.

Now, were I to wipe the phone and attempt to restore all of this data back
to the phone, it could take upwards of an hour or so but I've only needed to
do this when initializing a new device.

Just an F Y I.

Re: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi, I would have to disagree with those who say the answer to this question is
a matter of opinion. The question asked specifically about the best means of
backing up. Not the easiest or the most convenient, but the best. There is in
my view only one answer to the question when it's phrased this way, and it is
this. The best way to back up your device is with an encrypted backup in
iTunes. Here's why.
An encrypted backup is the only way of backing up passwords and other sensitive
data. If you restore from an iCloud backup and log into apps like Skype, or
similar apps requiring you to sign in, you'll need to sign in again. Encrypt
your backup on iTunes and you avoid this hassle.
The point has already been made in this thread about the desirability of an
iTunes backup if you keep old copies of apps for accessibility reasons. But
there's more to it. Your apps are not backed up to iCloud at all, and when you
restore using this method, the latest version of the app is downloaded. But
what if you have an app that has been pulled from the store, either by Apple,
or by the developer because they no longer wish to support it? The answer is,
restore from iCloud and you're just out of luck. You've lost that app for good.
iCloud backups don't back up your music. If all your music comes from the
iTunes Store, or you have iTunes Match, this is no problem at all, but it's a
consideration if you spent lots of time initially syncing music from your
computer. You can of course sync with your computer after restoring from an
iCloud backup, but if you have to do that, you may as well do the whole thing
from iTunes and enjoy the benefits.
Personally, I use both methods just for safety's sake. My devices back up to
iCloud every night, but when I connect to iTunes, I manually initiate an
encrypted backup. That way, if I'm travelling without my computer and need to
get up and running again, I can, but iTunes is my first restore preference for
the above reasons. So it's certainly possible to use both.
No doubt iCloud is the most convenient from a set it and forget it point of
view.

Hi Lori. As I said in my original post on this, it's really easy for you to
back up both ways, so you have an iCloud backup just in case.
That said, not backing up a computer is incredibly high risk. Just as we need
to back up our phones, we need to be doing regular computer backups as well in
a way that makes it easy to restore if that becomes necessary.
No, iCloud backups are not a complete backup of your phone as described
previously.

Re: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread Lori Dent
Hi Jonathan,

Okay, I can go ahead and do a iCloud back up but how do I do a back up with
iTunes? I know next to nothing about iTunes and I would need step by step
directions on how to do the back up on my computer with i Tunes. Can you or
someone help me with this? I would very much appreciate it. Thanks and take
care.

2014-05-02 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Lori, connect the device to iTunes, locate the screen for your device, check
the encrypt backup option and give it a password. Once you've done that, you in
future can go to the File Menu, choose your device's name from the device's
submenu, then choose backup.
If you use iTunes for Windows, you may find the December 2012 and January 2013
FSCasts helpful in getting familiar with iTunes.

RE: best way to back up ones I phone

2014-05-02 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Lori,

If your computer crashes, it is unlikely that your phone will crash at the
same time. You can always backup your phone to your computer again when it
is back in shape. An iCloud backup is always good and I always do the
encrypted backup to iTunes which does backup everything. If a newer version
of an app is no longer accessible and you kept the old version for that
reason, restoring from iCloud will give you back the latest version of the
app which is no longer accessible. The iCloud does not backup everything as
Jonathan explained so it is much safer to do both.

Hi Johnithon and all,

Okay, if I decided to back up everything on my phone through my computer
and iTunes, and what happens if my computer crashes and burns then backing
everything on my phone to my computer and iTunes was a waste?

I don't have an exturnal hard drive to make sure all my backing up my
Iphone is on the hard drive and on the computer. So then what?

I thought iCloud backed up and stores everything in ones IPhone.

. Thanks.

Lori and the Gipper

I don't want to lose any of my stuff I have on my iphone.
