I agree from the point of a totally blind person. I had a big tablet, sold
it. I was using the screen about as much as the keyboard, but like a small
screen, which is why I like my SE.

I wanted to get a big Apple tablet for my husband, because he uses his
Kindle Fire so much, charges a couple of times a day, but he says he likes
the Kindle, is not interested in an iPad right now.

Best regards,

Carolyn

Hi Reggie,

Why do you think an iPad will offer you a better experience than your
iPhone? You can just as easily pair a keyboard with your iPhone and buy an
Airprint compatible printer, just about all HP printers are and many others,
just look for "Airprint".
What is the cost of an iPad Pro 9.7 inch with 256Gb of storage and the
keyboard you mentioned in the US? Probably at least $1,000? You can buy a
basic but completely capable Windows 10 laptop for half that and if you use
NVDA youy wouldn't even have to pay for a screenreader. Just my two cents
worth. Before you spend all that money I'd make an appointment at an Apple
store and spend an hour or so with an iPad Pro 9.7 inch and see if you even
like it, a lot of completely blind people find that large of a screen
difficult when it comes to orientation or knowing where to look for what on
the screen.

I could see a couple of advantages to having a connected keyboard. One would be
that you don’t have to worry about the freeze ups that happened with Bluetooth,
or at least that used to be very common. I don’t know if they still are.
Another advantage is portability. Throw it in your backpack. Not two devices,
just one. Same thing goes for the Bluetooth speaker. Who needs that if you have
the iPad which has decent speakers? I think it really comes down to how
comfortable you are with the keyboard interface for the device. I should think
it would be about the same on the iPad as it would be including with
spreadsheets. Plus how important is easy portability? How important is it to
you not to have to learn a whole new screen reader and operating system?

Hi Richard,

I agree with respect to printers, I just bought an HP Laserjet Pro M102W which
is Airprint capable and when I just checked on Amazon.com I saw it for $99.
Here some of the features:
Black-and-white printer: Black-and-white prints at up to 23 ppm.
Wireless printing: Print and share with notebooks or PCs on an existing
wireless network, using the freedom of built-in wireless.
Wi-Fi Direct: Send print jobs quickly and efficiently—wirelessly without a
network.
AirPrint: Print from your Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to your HP printer.
Easy mobile printing: Print straight from your smartphone or tablet in just a
few simple steps.
Fast wake-up and print: This printer wakes up fast and prints your first page
faster—in as quickly as 7.3 seconds.
Page Maximizer Technology: More prints with Original HP toner cartridges with
JetIntelligence.
HP Auto-On/Auto-Off Technology: Save energy with intelligence that turns the
printer on when it’s needed and off when it isn’t.
Instant-on Technology: Stay efficient with technology that quickly starts up
print jobs from low-power mode.
ENERGY STAR: Save energy with this ENERGY STAR printer.
Compact size: The compact design takes up little space.

Regards,
Sieghard

you spend all that money I'd make an appointment at an Apple store and spend an
hour or so with an iPad Pro 9.7 inch and see if you even like it, a lot of
completely blind people find that large of a screen difficult when it comes to
orientation or knowing where to look for what on the screen.

So, this is what I am thinking. I want the ability to print. I want the
smallest screen I can get. I use my devices for apps, email, and messages.
Instead of getting a newer mac and because I am used to IOS I am thinking of an
iPad pro 9.7 inch screen, 128 or 256 gigs storage and Apple's smart keyboard
and a printer that is compatible with this device.

1 Would an newer iPad be compatible with any printers?
2 if I have to go to iPad pro or even if iPad would do printing, what printer
should i buy that is accessible?
3 Are there any iPad cases with built in keyboards that would automatically
connect with either device or do they all have a number to put in?
Thank you for any thoughts. There is just so much out there, and the most
important questions are not answered so asking here.

2018-08-05 Thread Mary Otten
On the other hand, if you don’t want to fool with learning windows and NVDA,
and you are pretty comfortable with the voiceover commands on the keyboard, you
could skip the iPad Pro, purchase the 9.7 inch regular iPad not pro, that just
came out this year, and get by for a few hundred dollars less than you would if
you purchased a pro. The good thing about having two devices is that you don’t
blow the battery out of just the one, and end up needing battery when you don’t
have any.
I agree that the larger screen and the different way that some abs look is a
pain, as richard noted. But if you really don’t have any experience with
windows and screen reader there, that is a serious learning curve. So I would
think twice about just going that way. I can’t remember if you said you did
have or did not have windows experience.

RE: iPad, printer, keyboard case

2018-08-05 Thread Richard Turner
For what it is worth, the model of Brother printer I have is the HL-l2360D.
It can do double sided printing and work either over WiFi or via USB.
So if someone in the household doesn’t have wireless printing capability on
their device, they can plug directly in with a USb printer cable.
I’m sure the models have changed by now, but they should be very similar. When
we had one that was USB only, it didn’t look much different than this one.

The set up is best done by someone with vision, though I suspect it could be
done using a screen reader.

HTH,
Richard
