Re: iPhone upgrade process
Hi Alan, As I shall shortly upgrade, I thought I'd ask a few questions here. 1.As I only use ITunes occasionally to add music to my phone, can you give the steps (in as much detail as possible) to do the Encripted Backup, please. 2.How did you get out of those initial screens of setup to get to do your encripted backup? (It may of course be obvious to me when I come to do it but I can't quite think through that part from your comments.) 3.Did you manage to get back to that guided part of the setup, or did you have to go to the various settings to add those things which you knew you had been asked to do earlier? If you got back, any ideas how you did that? 4.I have never dared yet to do the fingerprint setting and I gather yours didn't take the first time. Please tell me a little more on that one. Thanks for any additional info you can give. Charles, You won't have to register your new iPhone 6. If you've got BARD mobile registered and running on your current iPhone 5 and do an encrypted backup which is restored to your new iPhone, it will run on the new phone just like it did on the old one. You will have to download your books again, however. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhone On Feb 6, 2015, at 5:04 PM, Charles Rivard wee1s...@fidnet.com wrote: Thanks for the tip on using BARD. RE: iPhone upgrade process
I'm pretty sure it was after I had restored my backup. I realize now that I kind of kinked up the order I did things and am not sure I would do it again the same way. Fortunately, everything worked out. I know at some point iTunes was telling me version 8.1.3 was available for download and I'm almost positive this was after I had already done the restore process. RE: iPhone upgrade process
: Re: iPhone upgrade process Hi Alan, As I shall shortly upgrade, I thought I'd ask a few questions here. Carol P - Original Message - From: Alan Lemly mailto:wale...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, February 06, 2015 5:22 PM Subject: RE: iPhone upgrade process Charles, If all goes as planned, congrats on getting your new iPhone 6 on Monday. I got my new Verizon iPhone 6 yesterday. Like you I upgraded from an iPhone 5 but I also changed service providers from ATT to Verizon. I'll outline the steps I followed which will be a little different since I changed carriers and also got my iPhone 5 unlocked from ATT in order to prepare it for selling. Here are the steps I followed: 1.I did an encrypted backup with iTunes after making sure my iTunes for Windows version 11.4.0.18 was compatible with iOS 8.x and the iPhone 6. Like you, I still run Windows XP. 2.As others have said, I prefer using encrypted iTunes backups since all passwords and apps will be restored to the new device. I don't think apps are restored from iCloud backups and you must go fetch the latest versions of apps if restoring through iCloud. 3.I'll state the obvious that you make sure you have your password used with the encrypted backup handy as you'll have to have it in order to restore. I keep mine in a passwords app on both my computer and iPhone. 4.I restored my iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 5 in order to unlock that ATT device. This is required to unlock an ATT device after you've initiated the unlock process by completing the form on the ATT unlock portal site. 5.I connected my new iPhone 6 to the computer with the lightning USB cable in order to automatically power it up. I did this based on Sieghard's recommendation in the last couple of days and to also ensure that the phone had plenty of power. 6.When the phone powered up (I have enough vision to tell the screen is on), I triple clicked the home button and VoiceOver turned on. I don't remember how long it took the iPhone 6 to power up after plugging n the cable but it was within a few seconds. Sieghard's recommendation of waiting 45 seconds is probably good for handling any delays that might occur in the powering up process. 7.Here is where I varied a bit from the norm. Instead of going through the initial phone activation screens to do things like language selection, iCloud sign in, Apple ID confirmation, fingerprint setup, etc., I launched iTunes and began the restore from an encrypted backup process. 8.The restore went fine after I gave it the password and all my apps and settings were restored. 9.I noticed that when placing focus on my iPhone in iTunes that my phone number said something like n/a so I knew I had more steps to do on the iPhone 6. I then went through the steps on the phone to select language, give my Apple ID, set up the fingerprint, etc. These steps were easy and VoiceOver was there every step of the way. It took me a few tries to get the fingerprint recognized but I got there eventually. 10. After I verified that my phone number had successfully ported over from ATT by calling my new iPhone 6, I went into settings on my iPhone 5 and reset it to erase everything. Good luck with setting up your new iPhone 6 and I hope the process goes smoothly. Enjoy your new phone because the iPhone 6 really is a super fine device. I got all my stuff off the backup on the computer, the hardest thing for me was to get it registered with Apple, and connecting to my home network which at that time had a very long string of numbers to enter. Re: iPhone upgrade process
An encrypted backup via iTunes is definitely the way to go since it will restore all your passwords and the versions of your apps currently on your phone. I set up my new phone by this method and everything looks exactly as it did on my 4s. Re: iPhone upgrade process
Hi, You can use iCloud backup regardless of the OS your computer is using as the phone takes care of it all. If you were using it, setup of the new phone would be as simple as connecting it to your wireless network, signing in with your Apple ID, choosing restore from backup then relaxing as all of your apps, settings etc get transfered to the new phone. Definitely consider using iCloud when you set the 6 up. Failing that, doing an encrypted backup of the 5 in iTunes then restoring the 6 using said backup will work. Cheers, Ben. When I receive the new phone, what should I do, in sequence, to make a smooth and complete transfer of all data from the 5 to the 6? Anything I need to do before connecting the new device to my PC for all data transfer using the latest version of iTunes? How about stuff that must be done after iTunes has been used? As I understand it, iCloud cannot be used unless you have a version of Windows beyond XP, which I do not have. If this is true, I will not be using iCloud with the new phone. I do not currently do so with the iPhone 5. Thanks in advance. --- Be positive! Re: iPhone upgrade process
Hi Charles, my suggestion is to make an encrypted iTunes backup. That way all of your passwords will be in the back up, so when you restore it to the six, everything will be as exactly as it was on the five. Re: iPhone upgrade process
You also have to turn off Find my Phone on your 4s before you do the encrypted backup otherwise iTunes will reef use to do a restore on your iPhone 6.
