RE: Blind Square and Four Square

2016-07-12 Thread Larry Lumpkin
Blindsquare uses 4 square’s database of pois. You don’t have to have a 4
square account to use blindsquare but I think it helps you check into a place
if you wish. I don’t use the internals of 4 square so don’t know much about
it. Blindsquare uses open street maps for it’s map data.

RE: Blind Square and Four Square

2016-07-17 Thread Chip Orange
I really wish we had a blind-friendly navigational GPS app which used Google
map data; I don’t know why we don’t, the Google data is freely available (I
wrote such an app for laptops running Window-Eyes, which had a GPS receiver).
Yes, there could be a charge from Google to the app developer if you have a
high enough volume of data queries, but it was very small, so charging a little
something for the app should easily cover it. I never had to pay anything.

Google would also give you all the POIs as well as the mapping data (I did in
my app), so you would not have to use four square. I think it would be a big
improvement.

RE: Blind Square and Four Square

2016-07-17 Thread Chip Orange
It might … but I thought they bought map data from NavTech or some company like
that (at least they did for their other braille note products).

I don’t know enough about them, but I thought they charged a yearly fee, and I
didn’t want to own them like that if that was the case.

However, I am really disappointed in Blind Square so far.

Re: Blind Square and Four Square

The one big advantage with Blind Square and FourSquare is that you can
access menus from various restaurants and fast food places through
BlindSquare. That menu data is pulled directly from FourSquare from
what I understand. It can vary in quality, where with the Subway menu
I get a listing of all of their sandwiches, but with other
restaurants, the menus are very comprehensive. And some menus I've
pulled up in BlindSquare just list a few things. However, when I go to
other locations of the same restaurant I can get more of an actual
menu. Though you can "check in" to places with BlindSquare, that
functionality has been split off from the FourSquare app. FourSquare
is more about keeping up with where your friends/follwers are, whereas
Swarm is for checking in, in case anyone cares. Anyway, I've had
BlindSquare since January and haven't regretted the $30 cost.

Hi Wayne,

Quick question, how do you find the menus through BlindSquare? I am
assuming that you would double tap on the place within BlindSquare and
that there would be a button within the restaurant summary page that
would say "Menu" or something?

Greetings. You got it. Once you bring up the place summary screen,
which has information such as the address, phone number, and buttons
for various things like the website, tips from FourSquare, and so
forth; keep swiping through and there will be a Menu button. Once you
activate this after a short delay the menu will come up. To get back
to the place summary screen hit the back button in the upper left
corner. If you like the restaurant, you can toggle the Favorite button
on in the place summary screen. There's a lot of information on the
place summary screen so it pays to go through and explore. Also, if
you do a search for restaurants, when going through the search
results, BlindSquare will announce if there is a menu for a
restaurant. If there's not a menu then it will not be announced.

Good luck,
Wayne

Re: Blind Square and Four Square

2016-07-19 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
Awesome, thanks Wayne. It is starting to make a little more sense then.
when navigating various places, I kept hearing VoiceOver say "Tip" and
wondered what the hell it was referring to. While exploring one of the
restaurant's summary page, while looking for the infamous "Menu" button,
I came across the "Tip" button, and made the connection. So if I
navigate restaurants and VoiceOver says "Menu", then I'll know that this
restaurant has a menu.

Thanks again and have a wonderful day!

Anytime. Also, the Tips button can often have good information too.
This pulls tips from FourSquare and can vary depending on what people
include; anything from, "This place sucks and has horrible service,"
to, "I loved the tacos!" If you want to get an idea of what's good or
find some hidden goodness in the menu or restaurant atmosphere, then
the tips can be very helpful.

Have fun,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Well, I find you can get just as good menu info (including from Four Square)
from the free app "All Access".

RE: Blind Square and Four Square

2016-07-20 Thread Ron
Hi Chip,

Something that probably wouldn’t help you right now but, the software
engineering students at McGill university in Montreal have put together an app
using Google maps. Right now it is still only for the Montreal area as a test
but is going across Canada in the next month or so. It is called “Autour”
which is the French word for “Around”, but the app is in English. I very much
like its radar mode witch, with off ear headphone such as the Treks give a
constant beep or click going around 360º with the user at the center point.
This is on request. Also, if the phone is lifted horizontally, it
automatically goes into beam mode which will announce what’s around and where
as the user turns the phone around.

The ideal way to wear it is in a pouch around the neck with the phone pointing
down and the screen away from the chest. When the phone is lifted, the top of
the phone becomes the direction of the points of interest. If the user doesn’t
like the click or beep of the radar mode, it can be turned down so low you
can’t hear it but the voice announcing the point of interest comes from its
direction. So, if it announces a bus stop that is on your left, the voice
announcing it comes from the left and so on.

I think it is an app that has a lot of potential. I have been testing this app
for the professor working with the students. I will ask him if he plans to
open it to all of North America anytime soon and if there are any plans of
going worldwide.

Don’t know if it is easier to find now but it was a bit of a problem finding it
in the app store. In case you would like to look at it, try Autour in the
search field and, if you don’t find it, you will by entering McGill in the
field and going through all the apps until you find it.

In my area i have seen 4square POIs that were as much as half a mile away from
the actual location.

And I have to say it’s map data isn’t all that accurate in smaller towns which
may not have a lot of OSM volunteers to correct it. They need to allow people
who are blind to submit corrections somehow.

Try Arriadne GPS for more accurate mapping data, but without the four square
business info.

Blindsquare uses 4 square’s database of pois. You don’t have to have a 4
square account to use blindsquare but I think it helps you check into a place
if you wish. I don’t use the internals of 4 square so don’t know much about
it. Blindsquare uses open street maps for it’s map data.

What are the advantages of using these two apps together?
