Hi,

That's because the original person who wrote about this didn't
realize he was pushing the home button to invoke SIRI with a
recognized finger print finger. If anyone else uses the phone they
can get to SIRI by pushing the home button but, the finger print
reader is on that button and, if its not your finger, it doesn't work

That's curious. I have my Touch ID and Passcode settings turned on
to allow access to Siri from a locked screen but when I tried
beating the system by asking for the temperature, nothing happened
when I double tapped on the Weather Channel button below the
provided temperatures. My screen did not change nor did the iPhone 6 unlock.

Hi Joney, this is easily addressed. You can prevent Siri from being
used without unlocking your device.
To enable this, in iOS 8 you'll find it in Settings, Touch ID and
Passcode, under the Allow Access when locked section. Turn Siri off
from there. Actually I would turn pretty much everything off in that section.

To do the trick is to ask Seri what the temperature is.
In the lower right hand corner pass the times of the day with the
temperature there is a weather channel button.

Click on the button that will open the internet or safari.
Once you open safari, hit the home button to close out of the net

2015-04-28 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

That’s because the original person who wrote about this didn’t realize he was
pushing the home button to invoke SIRI with a recognized finger print finger.
If anyone else uses the phone they can get to SIRI by pushing the home button
but, the finger print reader is on that button and, if its not your finger, it
doesn’t work

Hi Joney, this is easily addressed. You can prevent Siri from being used
without unlocking your device.

To enable this, in iOS 8 you'll find it in Settings, Touch ID and Passcode,

I would turn pretty much everything off in that section.

Ron,

Thanks for that clarification. I must have missed that post but yes, that
would make a big difference if one is calling Siri by using the finger set
for the Touch ID.

Hi,

That's because the original person who wrote about this didn't realize he
was pushing the home button to invoke SIRI with a recognized finger print
finger. If anyone else uses the phone they can get to SIRI by pushing the
home button but, the finger print reader is on that button and, if its not
your finger, it doesn't work

That's curious. I have my Touch ID and Passcode settings turned on to allow
access to Siri from a locked screen but when I tried beating the system by
asking for the temperature, nothing happened when I double tapped on the
Weather Channel button below the provided temperatures. My screen did not
change nor did the iPhone 6 unlock.

Hi Joney, this is easily addressed. You can prevent Siri from being used
without unlocking your device.

To enable this, in iOS 8 you'll find it in Settings, Touch ID and Passcode,
under the Allow Access when locked section. Turn Siri off from there.
Actually I would turn pretty much everything off in that section.

I fell for the same silly mistake the person posting the message did.
If you don't use the same finger you used to set a fingerprint, it won't
work. But, if you hold the home button with a fingerprinted finger, it seems
like you've bypassed the security but you have not.
If anyone is worried about this, you can disable Siri access at the lock
screen under the touch id and pass code settings.

But, it looks quite secure if you either do not have a fingerprint set or use
a different finger.

You are right...
I just tried now using another finger and it will ask me for the
code when I click on the weather channel button.

To do the trick is to ask Seri what the temperature is.

In the lower right hand corner pass the times of the day with
the temperature there is a weather channel button.

Click on the button that will open the internet or safari.

Once you open safari, hit the home button to close out of the
net and it takes you back to your home screen or back to the
desktop as I like to call it lol.

I have the Iphone 6+. Not sure if this will work on other

I mean like the 5S and 6.

Hi Joney, this is easily addressed. You can prevent Siri from being used
without unlocking your device.
To enable this, in iOS 8 you'll find it in Settings, Touch ID and Passcode,
under the Allow Access when locked section. Turn Siri off from there. Actually
I would turn pretty much everything off in that section.

I don’t know what biometric is, but some mounths back i read about someone from
the hacker community that stated it is possible to take a picture of the finger

isn’t it some biometric stuff with the touch-id? How he or they then do it was
not mentioned in the short article. They said it was possible to do it.

Take care

Amann,

I do respect your opinion but, please allow me to respectfully say that you are
all wet. What you are saying is that it is worth nothing to lock the phone.
Anyone knows that, no matter how many locks you have on your house, you will
never stop an experienced burglar from getting in. I have an alarm system on my
apartment and I always lock my door when I leave. I often analyze how easily a
professional could get in here if he or she really wanted to come in. Do you
really think that everyone who has an alarm system on their house absolutely
believe that nobody can go in? We all know but its an extra layer of
protection that keeps the punks out. Same thing with your phone. Punks won't
be able to get into your phone but an experienced hacker will always find the
way but, if they are that good, its not worth the investment of their time for
such a small item. A pro would go into a store for its diamonds but he won't
risk coming into my place for a computer and a TV.

RE: Iphones no longer secure

2015-04-26 Thread Aman Singer
Hi Sieghard,

It's good to see you around. I have to disagree with you here, though,
if I may.
First, I am not at all concerned about the passcode being too short and
being forced because of its shortness. If I had anything that needed protection
with a long passcode, it probably shouldn't be on my phone anyway. What renders
the passcode useless is basically tricks like the one posted by the original
poster in this thread. Obviously, that one doesn't work, but there are,
depending on your iOS version, plenty that do. Keep in mind, also, that these
tricks are themselves rendered useless by publicity. That is, if a person knows
how to break the passcode and is dishonest, he would not pass that information
around too publicly in case, as happened in the 7.x series, Apple patched the
hole. The fact that even so, there have been quite a few exploits published and
patched makes me seriously doubt that the passcode system is secure enough to
bother with the inconvenience of even a short code. Personally, if I had
information that I was nervous about on the phone, I would put in a long code
and hope for the best, but wouldn't expect the best, nor would I keep that
information on the phone any longer than absolutely necessary.
As for touch ID, I should say that I have a 5S but use it in a Defender
case for the 5. One of the reasons I do that is because I don't want, under any
circumstance, to use Touch ID. I don't use Touch ID because I don't trust
Apple, I don't trust them not to leak if it's in their interest, I don't trust
them to be smart about how they handle the data, and I don't trust them to be
truthful about appropriate isolation of fingerprint data. Given that changing
the finger print is a bit more difficult than changing a password, using it on
a mobile device is too risky, in my view. I should say that I wouldn't trust
Google or any other phone manufacturer, either, I just think biometric
security, particularly with the fingerprint, is hopelessly unsafe if you don't
design the system yourself, and if you design the system yourself, there goes
the convenience factor.
As for not locking up the car, I don't think one should lock the car to
keep it from being stolen. The point of the lock is to do two things, first, it
keeps the insurance company from complaining that you didn't lock the car, it
is the standard practice, and secondly, it keeps people who for some reason try
the handle with no intent to steal out of the car. As you say, most locks on
cars, and indeed on houses, are broken easily enough.
Finally, I'm not saying the passcode is useless for everyone, just for
me. For example, the passcode may be useful if there are young children in the
house who like to play with the phone, or if there are people in the house or
workplace who want to snoop on the phone and don't want to put effort into it.
The fact that I don't have such impediments doesn't mean that others don't and
that they may not want to use a code. My response was only to the original
poster who seemed surprised that he thought he could avoid the passcode. As it
turns out, his particular example was wrong, but he still shouldn't be
surprised if one day the avoidance is possible, it has been before and I have
no doubt will be again.

Hi Aman,

I beg to differ, in my opinion enabling passcode and touch Id offers a great
deal of security and if you were concerned about how relatively easy it is to
break a 4-digit passcode, you can always disable simple passcode and use a 8 or
10 digit password with letters, numbers and all that. Touch Id of course makes
it super easy to unlock your iPhone so that the actual passcode is only
required when you reboot your phone which typically is not that often so using
a more difficult passcode may be justified. The main reason why I upgraded from
my 4S to the 5S at the time was Touch Id and even if I don't have very
sensitive data on my phone, I still wouldn't want people to have access to my
contact list, pictures, text messages or emails.

Also, I think there is a difference whether your phone is stolen by somebody
who thinks he can make a few bucks reselling it or by a skilled hacker who
thinks you have information on your phone which warrants an effort of at least
hours or maybe days to try and break into it. I think the chances my phone is
stolen by somebody like that are pretty small. Furthermore, if my phone is
locked with a passcode/Touch Id, somebody who steals it cannot disable Find my
iPhone nearly as easily although I believe even a phone with no security which
has Find my iPhone turned on requires you to enter your Apple Id password when
you try to disable Find my iPhone.

Anyhow, to me using

I agree passcodes are not a silver bullet when it comes to security, but
as my father used to say, Locks are just meant to keep honest people
out. A passcode will keep someone from doing some casual snooping, and
if I ever lose my iPhone, will give me time to contact my carrier and
report it stolen, so whoever finds it can't run up a cell phone bill for
me. I'm just explaining why I use a passcode. I'm not passing any
judgement on anyone who does or doesn't use a passcode.

As to this particular method of attack, the user can simply make sure

Re: Iphones no longer secure

2015-04-26 Thread Richard Turner
I fell for the same silly mistake the person posting the message did.
If you don't use the same finger you used to set a fingerprint, it won't work.
But, if you hold the home button with a fingerprinted finger, it seems like
you've bypassed the security but you have not.
If anyone is worried about this, you can disable Siri access at the lock screen
under the touch id and pass code settings.

But, it looks quite secure if you either do not have a fingerprint set or use a
different finger.

To do the trick is to ask Seri what the temperature is.
In the lower right hand corner pass the times of the day with the
temperature there is a weather channel button.
Click on the button that will open the internet or safari.
Once you open safari, hit the home button to close out of the net and it

I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but there is an option where
you can only require a passcode after you haven't used your phone for a
certain period of time. Go into Settings - Passcode and see what the
require passcode option is set to. Mine is set to after one minute.

RE: Iphones no longer secure

2015-04-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Anyhow, to me using Touch Id if your device supports it is a no brainer even if
you just use it because it's faster and easier to unlock the phone than finding
and double tapping the Unlock button. I have to press the home button even if I
don't have any security enabled so I might as well press it and leave my finger
on it for a second so it unlocks my phone with Touch Id. In some ways not using
it would be like not locking your car because after all, a professional and
skilled auto thief will be able to steal it whether it's locked or not.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Jeremy and all,

Around fifteen years ago now, someone at Microsoft wrote something he called
the ten immutable laws of security
https://technet.microsoft.com/library/cc722487.aspx
The whole thing is worth reading, but one of the laws or more accurately
descriptions, says:

Law #3: If a bad guy has unrestricted physical access to your computer, it's
not your computer anymore

A smartphone is nothing more or less than a computer. The passcode/fingerprint
is simply security theatre, it makes things look secure and may be secure
against someone who doesn't have Google, but it is not secure in fact. Once the
phone is in the hands of someone who wants and is willing to bypass the
security, nothing is secure in fact, it only depends on how much trouble the
attacker is willing to go to.
As to this particular method of attack, the user can simply make sure Siri
doesn't work on the lock screen. Again, though, it doesn't much matter, there
are other methods. Keep your phone with you and, in most cases, you need not
worry about physical access without your knowing about it. This is one of the
reasons why I have no passcode on my phone, it offers very little extra
security but does offer an inconvenience when I want to unlock the phone. I do
not keep any secure data on my phone, any data that I object to the public
having access to, simply because the chance of theft is too high and, as we
see, the passcode is not of much use.
Aman

Hi,

It's because of touch ID. If you have chosen to use touch ID to unlock
your phone you ask Siri the temperature you can access Safari as you
say, but if you don't use touch ID to unlock the phone you are
prompted to enter your passcode.

Cheers,
Ben.

Lock your phone completely.

Then just hold down the home button to ask seri the question what is the
tempature.

Then follow the steps as I stated earlier.

I have my phone to have the finger print or the 4 didget code.

I have made sure I have all the security systems active.

Re: Iphones no longer secure

2015-04-26 Thread Aman Singer
Hi Jeremy and all,

Around fifteen years ago now, someone at Microsoft wrote something he
called the ten immutable laws of security
https://technet.microsoft.com/library/cc722487.aspx
The whole thing is worth reading, but one of the laws or more
accurately descriptions, says:

Law #3: If a bad guy has unrestricted physical access to your
computer, it's not your computer anymore

A smartphone is nothing more or less than a computer. The
passcode/fingerprint is simply security theatre, it makes things look
secure and may be secure against someone who doesn't have Google, but
it is not secure in fact. Once the phone is in the hands of someone
who wants and is willing to bypass the security, nothing is secure in
fact, it only depends on how much trouble the attacker is willing to
go to.
As to this particular method of attack, the user can simply make sure
Siri doesn't work on the lock screen. Again, though, it doesn't much
matter, there are other methods. Keep your phone with you and, in most
cases, you need not worry about physical access without your knowing
about it. This is one of the reasons why I have no passcode on my
phone, it offers very little extra security but does offer an
inconvenience when I want to unlock the phone. I do not keep any
secure data on my phone, any data that I object to the public having
access to, simply because the chance of theft is too high and, as we
see, the passcode is not of much use.

Lock your phone completely.

Then just hold down the home button to ask seri the question what is the
tempature.

Then follow the steps as I stated earlier.

I have my phone to have the finger print or the 4 didget code.

I have made sure I have all the security systems active.

I just tried this on an iPhone 5 with iOS8.3. I was prompted to enter my

To do the trick is to ask Seri what the temperature is.

In the lower right hand corner pass the times of the day with the
temperature there is a weather channel button.

Click on the button that will open the internet or safari.

Once you open safari, hit the home button to close out of the net and it

I have the Iphone 6+. Not sure if this will work on other phones.

yeah. it's reading your fingerprint as you hold the button down.

I fell for the same silly mistake the person posting the message did.
If you don't use the same finger you used to set a fingerprint, it
won't work. But, if you hold the home button with a fingerprinted
finger, it seems like you've bypassed the security but you have not.
If anyone is worried about this, you can disable Siri access at the
lock screen under the touch id and pass code settings.

But, it looks quite secure if you either do not have a fingerprint
set or use a different finger.

attack is less painful than the
death of a thousand cuts. Great as far as it goes but it doesn't go too far. I
should also say that the iPhone is not at all secure against Apple themselves.
The amount of data they can collect makes me shudder. If I weren't blind, I
would never use such a thing.
You write:
Additionally, with all due respect, whilst we could debate the definition of
secure data, I'd wager that you might not be aware of quite how much data iOS
stores without making it overly clear to you.

You're probably right, there is probably data that is being saved that
I don't know about, though I do try to keep up. I have, not uncharitably, been
described as a privacy nut. My concerns, such as they are, are not of the thief
getting that data, as I said, theft of the phone isn't too much of a problem,
but of it leaking to advertisers and others over the network, I have no doubt
that's happening. As to the two items you mention, passwords and contacts, the
first thing I would do if any phone with saved passwords, for wireless networks
or anything else, went missing is to change those passwords. I would do that
whether I did or didn't have a passcode on the phone, there would be no reason
to take the risk of those passwords getting out even if I had a passcode and
thought the passcode was secure. As to my travels, they're open to anyone who
wants them, any private travels would mean that I should leave my phone at
home. As to contacts, I keep them in my head, not on the phone.
Finally, let me say that it's a pleasure to find someone who has
actually thought about these things, most people don't even think about what is
on their phone, they just apply the quickest security method and leave it
there.

Hi,

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with a number of your points. You said:

On 4/26/15, Aman Singer aman.sin...@gmail.com wrote:
A smartphone is nothing more or less than a computer. The
passcode/fingerprint is simply security theatre, it makes things look
secure and may be secure against someone who doesn't have Google, but
it is not secure in fact. Once the phone is in the hands of someone
who wants and is willing to bypass the security, nothing is secure in
fact, it only depends on how much trouble the attacker is willing to
 go to.
Not security theater at all. If you are seriously insinuating that a casual
Google search will allow your run of the mill mugger to bypass your passcode
and or touch ID in a way that allows them to access your data then I'd be very
interested in hearing some specifics. Lets not forget that the hardware hack
that got a lot of media attention a month or so ago no longer works.
As a side note, I'd wager that my iPhone is more secure than your average
computer due to the amount of control that Apple has at a very low level.
This is one of the reasons why I have no passcode on my phone, it
offers very little extra security but does offer an inconvenience when
I want to unlock the phone. I do not keep any secure data on my phone,
any data that I object to the public having access to, simply because
the chance of theft is too high and, as we see, the passcode is not of
 much use.
Whilst I agree that to a certain extent where there's a will there's a way,
unless you've been annoying any 4 letter agencies, I personally feel that
saying that a passcode offers very little extra security is incorrect. Lets not
forget that the workaround that was posted to the list has now been proven to
be ineffective.
Additionally, with all due respect, whilst we could debate the definition of
secure data, I'd wager that you might not be aware of quite how much data iOS
stores without making it overly clear to you.
For example, do you really consider your wireless network password/s, where
you've traveled to and any contact information data that you wouldn't mind
sharing with the public?

Cheers,
Ben.

 Aman

That might be it. It makes little sense to have it not lock immediately because
if you use the home button, instead of power to unlock, it's almost as fast as
not having a pass code.

Could it be because you have Touch ID enabled? I'm just guessing since I
still have an iPhone 4S.

I haven’t found anywhere else where I could change this.

I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but there is an option where you
can only require a passcode after you haven't used your phone for a certain
period of time. Go into Settings - Passcode and see what the require passcode
option is set to. Mine is set to after one minute.
