RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Well apparently I was wrong, Richard since posted the battery specs which Apple
now has released and strictly by capacity the 13 Pro's battery is slightly
smaller than the one for the 13. How long the battery lasts in real life is so
extremely subjective anyways and the values they give for how many hours of
playback and talk time you get are measured in very specific and precise lab
settings. You could have a poor cell connection with an iPhone 13 Max and maybe
have some apps installed which don't do power management well and next thing
your battery life is worse than that of an iPhone Mini with a great connection
and nothing much installed on it.
I find people's obsession with battery life is often exaggerated, the fact is
that no iPhone or Android phone for that matter usually has the kind of battery
life where you only have to charge it every 3 days or even every 2 days
depending on use so as long as my iPhone gets me comfortably through the day
with reasonably heavy use including maybe a couple of hours of GPS use, some
long phone calls, checking emails and using whatever other apps I usually use
then that is fine and even my iPhone 11 does this very nicely. And if you
really use it so heavily that you run out of juice before you can recharge then
just buy a battery case or an external battery so you can top it up for 15 or
20 minutes in between.

The thing about Lidar is you need to buy a Pro model to have that sensor
included. There's a large jump in price between the standard and pro models.
Unless you're really into photography, you're getting the bulk of what most
blind people will really benefit from in the standard iPhone for substantially
less money. This puts Lidar at a painful chicken and egg point. App developers
need to find clever enough uses for Lidar to encourage enough sales on a
smaller percentage of blind owners of pro models. I think Apple is going to
have to bring Lidar to all iPhone models before things really get going.

I currently use a 10R and decided to upgrade to a 13 with 512 gb. I look
forward to the extra storage. However, I also think the 13 will prove a better
phone to make use of artificial intelligence related improvements. The 10R came
out when that was just finding its stride. Better battery life and a three
generation jump in the chip are also attractive. Camera improvements are also
possibly quite helpful given that automatic stabilization is now on all phones

Apple reveals iPhone 13 battery sizes, uploads 7-minute hands-on video
By Joe Svetlik about 7 hours ago

Apple has shown us some more details on the iPhone 13 ahead of the new range
going on sale on Friday. Not only has it revealed the exact battery size for
each handset, but it's also posted a 7-minute video guide on YouTube.

Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72cAe_2LAFQ

Admittedly there's no new information here, but it's still nice to see the
phones from more angles and outside of the confines of a launch event.

Now, battery sizes. Apple is notoriously cagey when it comes to the exact
capacities of its iPhone batteries, preferring to say how many hours of use
they can provide instead. That was true of last Tuesday's launch event too,
when Apple only told us how much longer the phones would last than their
predecessors. But now we have some hard stats to go on.
They have been published in a filing on the website of hazardous material
information and response company Chemtrec (via 9to5Mac). The filing shows that
battery sizes are up an average of 13 per cent compared to the iPhone 12 family.

iPhone 13 mini battery: 9.34Wh (up 9 per cent on iPhone 12 mini)
iPhone 13 battery: 12.41Wh (up 15.1 per cent on iPhone 12)
iPhone 13 Pro battery: 11.97Wh (up 11 per cent on iPhone 12 Pro)
iPhone 13 Pro Max battery: 16.75Wh (up 18.5 per cent on iPhone 12 Pro Max)
The batteries are measured in watt-hours rather than milliamp hours, which is
the usual measure for a device's battery size.

As you may have noticed, the iPhone 13 Pro actually has a smaller battery than
the iPhone 13. That's because there's less space inside due to the addition of
a 120Hz screen, extra GPU core, and extra cameras (both phones are the same
size). We'll have to see how this impacts battery life.

Apple claims that the iPhone 13 mini and Pro will last 1.5 hours longer than
their iPhone 12 equivalents and that the iPhone 13 and Pro Max outlast their
predecessors by 2.5 hours. We'll find out soon enough in our reviews...

I just think it a bit odd that they would bring out 2 minis so close together

This isn't just true for sighted users. I like the fact that I don't have a
home button on the front of my iPhone 11. I feel I have more screen real
estate, and it's easier to use braille screen input.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
A good point, but when we had the winter storm in Texas earlier this year,
having more storage wouldn't have helped since we also lost power. I'm not
trying to convince anyone to get less storage, but for how I use my phone, I'm
OK with leveraging streaming and cloud services and not needing so much
internal storage.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-19 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Not if you take in to account the new touch id buttons on the ipad air 4 and
the new iPad mini,

They are a touch id built in to the power button which doesn't take up any
screen realestate,

That's what was being meant.

streaming doesn't always cut it. I mean we had horrible cell service
when the last hurricane came through, and it's still messed up at
times. I would rather have a nice amount of storage and that's more
than 128 for sure. 256 is what my 12 pro max has. I think that's good
for now but who knows what I will need in a couple years.

The pro model of the 13 is already up to 1 terabyte of internal storage. I'm

Having a much better chip then in the iPhone 8 will be very nice as well.

And apparently Apple has a perfectly functioning home button with touch Id

guess they don't want this for the iPhone.

Every year, Apple continues to develop a new version of touch ID. The rumor
mill says the company actually created a prototype of the iPhone
13 with touch ID. Somehow, the new touch ID does not meet Apple’s standards and
the team continues to develop the technology. I am not holding my breath over
it.

Podcasts and music drive my quest for more storage. I have 128 GB of storage
and look forward to an iPhone 13 with 512 GB. A trip longer than two weeks can
mean that all music gets listened to once. Old podcast episodes are retained
until the vacation. The extra storage means I can listen to my favorite music
on the road without having to turn to Spotify or Pandora and burn cell phone
data. Apple’s biggest racket is charging $100 for 128 gigs of data, several
times over what the local computer shop charges for a thumb drive of the same
storage.
Yet, the extra price is less than what someone would pay in extra data charges
for a streaming service if that service were of no charge to the consumer.

I like my iPhone plan with Verizon. For $27 and some change, I get
unlimited talk and text, and 5 gigs of data. I accidentally used a
lot of that data up yesterday when watching movies. For me, data is
important, because our internet is so crappy. Sometimes, our wifi
just cuts out completely, and I have to turn it off, then back on
again. If I need more data, then it would cost me only $10 for
another 10 gigs of data. A couple weeks ago, I was at my brothers
house dog sitting and it was awesome. I could download bard books on
his WIFI incredibly fast. At the beginning of next year, I'll
probably upgrade to the 15 gig option. Verizon also gives me $5 off
because I use auto pay, and also $10 off per month because I've been a
Verizon customer for so many years.

A couple of things I do to live with my 128G of storage and within the data
limits of my plan are to leverage streaming services and cloud storage and take
advantage of a wi-fi network when available. I'll download books, podcasts and
music if I'm traveling and think I'll be away from wi-fi for any length of

Carolyn, and others,
If you read about the way Seeing AI and SuperSense through their Super LIDAR
app, are using this feature, it greatly enhances the ability to identify
objects and give far more accurate information about how far away from you that
object is.
Yes, it also enhances photography; but it also does a lot more.
Most uses granted will be for sighted people, like the fact that with LIDAR,
apps can take a photograph of a room and give good enough measurements that an
architect or interior decorater could make very good first draffts of their
designs.
This will be the second year of its existance and I'm hoping the uses to help
the visually impaired will continue to improve.
Plus, my wife can use my phone when she wants to take realy good photos/videos

IF one needs to keep a huge amount of pictures, music, books, movies,
then memory is a higher priority.

If one is focused on ease of picture taking, advances in object
identification and location, then the camera features are a higher priority.

The iPhone 13 with 512 GB is the same price as the 13 pro with 256 GB.

So, pay a premium for extra memory, or pay a premium for extra
features.

Apple has you paying a premium for what you want any way you slice it.

The thing about Lidar is you need to buy a Pro model to have that
sensor included. There's a large jump in price between the standard and pro
models. Unless you're really into photography, you're getting the bulk of what
most blind people will really benefit from in the standard iPhone for
substantially less money. This puts Lidar at a painful chicken and egg point.
App developers need to find clever enough uses for Lidar to encourage enough
sales on a smaller percentage of blind owners of pro models. I think Apple is
going to have to bring Lidar to all iPhone models before things really get
going.

2021-09-19 Thread Richard Turner

Thanks, that answers my LIDAR question. I care nothing for photography; my

2021-09-19 Thread Carolyn
What is LIDAR. Is it an app to download or something else?

I am asking, because recently I had an email from AT&T saying I was due an
upgrade.

As far an upgrade, if I could get it now, I would want the 13 mini. If I am
only eligible for a 12 and wait, I am wondering if I switch from post to
prepay, if that would have an adverse effect on my eligibility for upgrade in a
few months.

Incidentally, I want Starlight.

Camera improvements are also
possibly quite helpful given that automatic stabilization is now on all phones
rather than the pros. For blind people, this could be quite helpful if it
really can keep things steadily in focus. Guess I'll find out. I'm hoping I
won't have to upgrade again for a number of years.

And apparently Apple has a perfectly functioning home button with touch Id
since they use it on certain iPad models including the newest iPad Mini, but I
guess they don't want this for the iPhone.

IF one needs to keep a huge amount of pictures, music, books, movies, then
memory is a higher priority.
If one is focused on ease of picture taking, advances in object identification
and location, then the camera features are a higher priority.

The iPhone 13 with 512 GB is the same price as the 13 pro with 256 GB.
So, pay a premium for extra memory, or pay a premium for extra features.
Apple has you paying a premium for what you want any way you slice it.

And maybe next year the regular iPhone 14 will come with a 1 Tb option, for me
the smallest storage option is more than I need because I don't see any sense
in, for example, having all my Audible books, well over 900 by now, downloaded
on my phone. Whenever I want to listen to a book again I just find it in my

I currently have a 64 Gb iPhone 11 and I have about 30 Gb of free space on it,

Re: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-19 Thread Michael Feir
The thing about Lidar is you need to buy a Pro model to have that sensor
included. There's a large jump in price between the standard and pro
models. Unless you're really into photography, you're getting the bulk of
what most blind people will really benefit from in the standard iPhone for
substantially less money. This puts Lidar at a painful chicken and egg
point. App developers need to find clever enough uses for Lidar to
encourage enough sales on a smaller percentage of blind owners of pro
models. I think Apple is going to have to bring Lidar to all iPhone models
before things really get going.

Camera improvements are also
possibly quite helpful given that automatic stabilization is now on all phones
rather than the pros. For blind people, this could be quite helpful if it
really can keep things steadily in focus. Guess I'll find out. I'm hoping I
won't have to upgrade again for a number of years.

Very interesting about the iPhone 13! but for me, no IPhone upgrades! maybe
until about 3 years or so; I'd like to give this SE 2nd generation (I got it
June of last year), all its use! Remember that it's the body of an 8, with the
innards of an 11.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread lists

Hi Mark and all,
As mentioned to another list member on here directly after the event, I'll be
staying put this year and watching to see what happens with iPhone 14 and
beyond.
It's very disappointing that there is no finger print reader once again. I love
using this feature on my Google phone.
I'm also more than delighted to keep my series 6 watch for as long as Watch OS
will be available in terms of updates.
The mini looks nice, but having only received my 5th gen device last year, It's
not required to spend so soon specially as it's working well and most likely
shall run 15 plus 16. My plan is just to wait for a while.
I'm more interested in settling into my new Quality Engineering role, Further
study at my University, As well as intensive O & M as I've moved into a new
exclusive private home after living in my current location for the last 23
years.
Cheers guys for all the comments on the new hardware and banter. 😊

Subject: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

Hello Everyone,

I've enjoyed reading all of the comments on iPhone 13.

To say that I was disappointed that this year's iPhone models do not have any
kind of fingerprint reader, would be the understatement of the season.

So, as for me, I have updated my beloved 8 Plus to iOS 14.8, had a new battery
installed earlier, today, and intend to hold out for one more year (smile).

Besides, not that I am superstitious or anything but I do not relish the idea
of using any kind of device with the number 13 being part of its name (smile).
It took all of my courage, back in the day, to install iOS 13!!!
(big Smile). Again, not superstitious, just careful (grin).

Mark

I know what Yoda said. I was taking a bit of liberty with the original; but I
guess that must not have been clear.
I suppose the word "paraphrase was the wrong word to describe my "spin-off"

Ah but Sieghard

What green is apple green?

And some apples are red,
Or a mixture,
But yes browns,

Or karkey or kakk

I’m sure as you state there could be interesting names in the brown range!

Hmm, and other descriptive terms could also be applied to the colour brown,
maybe Apple could start a contest to see who comes up with the best term 🤣

And then why has there never been an iPhone in colour Apple Green?

Interesting article I read this morning on mac rumours,

The iPad mini new has the a15 bionic chip,

But they are saying its been clocked down to make it slower than the a15 bionic
in the phones.

Kind of a low move I think in the tablet if they have actually done that.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Carolyn,

Yeah I'm think ing the same thing,
And have pretty much decided to wait until next year to replace my 11 pro max.

It's still in great working condition

But it's the watch I'm currently waiting for as my s4 is slowly dying with it's
battery only lasting up to 12 hours per day,

Minus if I'm working out.

So the 7 might be a good upgrade

They will go away in spring 2022? My problem is between a 13 mini and a 14, if
a 14 might have fingerprint ID. Of course, I'm living without fingerprint, but
this is way sooner than I wanted to replace my 11 that I bought in January of
2020.

RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't have a mini, but I do prefer braille screen input on my iPhone 11 over
my iPhone 7, especially when using it in landscape mode. The larger screen just
gives me more room so my fingers aren't so cramped. The home button also gets
in the way when using braille screen input on the iPhone 7. For these and other
reasons, I do prefer using braille screen input in screen away mode. I just
find it easier to make sure my fingers are oriented correctly, plus
It works more consistently as I move back and forth between the iPhone 7 and
the iPhone 11.

I suppose it varies from person to person, but have any of you mini users use
Braille Screen Input? I like the idea of a small phone but wonder if (1) BSI is
harder and (2) how is the audio? Is the speaker also smaller?

I suppose it varies from person to person, but have any of you mini users use
Braille Screen Input? I like the idea of a small phone but wonder if (1) BSI is
harder and (2) how is the audio? Is the speaker also smaller?

2021-09-16 Thread Richard Turner
Angie,
That is at least two of us on this list who were born on a Friday the 13th.
Great day to have been born!

All this nonsense about avoiding the number 13 is just that.

Rather than being extra careful on the 13th, people would be wise to be careful
in general, 😊.

Whether one buys a new iPhone or not is such an individual choice, I certainly
would never say someone "should" or "should not" buy a new phone. When I
worked in the counseling field, my favorite phrase with people was to encourage
them to "stop should'ing all over themselves as well as others."
To paraphrase what Yoda says, "Do or do not...there is no should."

Re: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Gordon
I like the idea of the mini, but Apple discontinued the 12 mini pretty
early on because of poor sales. So I hope this one does better. I just
think that particular phone could always be dealing with battery life
issues since it's so small and trying to handle the daily demand users
put on it.

I suppose one reason I love the number 13 is that I was born on Friday 13th;
also superstition and the like fascinates me. The weird, supernatural etc.

Hello Everyone,

I've enjoyed reading all of the comments on iPhone 13.

To say that I was disappointed that this year's iPhone models do not have
any kind of fingerprint reader, would be the understatement of the season.

So, as for me, I have updated my beloved 8 Plus to iOS 14.8, had a new
battery installed earlier, today, and intend to hold out for one more year
(smile).

Besides, not that I am superstitious or anything but I do not relish the
idea of using any kind of device with the number 13 being part of its name
(smile). It took all of my courage, back in the day, to install iOS 13!!!
(big Smile). Again, not superstitious, just careful (grin).

Re: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-16 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Hi to all. I totally agree with you Mark. I will also wait another
year before upgrading my iPhone8. I will have something to look
forward to. Last night I had a question and called apple
accessibility and I found out something totally awesome about the
iPhone 13 pro. It can go as high as one terabyte of storage. That is
so totally awesome. I can just fill that baby up with so many books.
The battery life on the iPhone 13 is also really cool. I could get
almost double the amount of battery life of my iPhone 8. If the
iPhone 13pro has so much storage and such a good battery life, just
imagine how cool the iPhone 14 will be. Also, if the iPhone 14 really
does have some kind of touch ID, that would be perfect for me. I know
the processor would be also very good on the iPhone 14 as well. I
just have to start saving up money now.
