Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-11 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hopefully the explanations some have offered in this thread will help those who
are struggling with the Fleksy paradigm. It's certainly different, especially
if you're the type of person who likes character by character keyboard echo.
You're not going to get that kind of feedback with Fleksy because of the word
prediction.

Most of the time when I'm mobile with the iPhone, I have my Focus 14 Blue with
me and that's how I enter text. But on those occasions where I don't, Fleksy
has been a game changer for me. My typing speed with it is right up there with
how fast I used to be with T9 in the days of the Nokia phones with keypads.
I've developed a two finger typing technique with Fleksy that is giving me
really good speed. One criticism I have of the app as it stands is that
sometimes you have to enter manual entries quite slowly or they don't take, but
they've squashed a number of bugs already so hopefully they'll get to the
bottom of that one. All in all I can't recommend Fleksy highly enough.

I hope Apple will find a way to permit the installation of universal keyboards
without compromising security, so that whether you prefer Fleksy, Braille Touch
or something else, you can enter text in any app you like without the need for
copy and paste.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-10 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, if you don't know where the letters are on a qwerty keyboard then
this app will probably not be the best for you, and you might have
trouble finding the letters on a virtual keyboard. However if you have
the idea of where letters are, even if it's not exact, then this app is
very useful. Take the word "hello" for example. Most everyone knows that
the letter h is pretty much in the middle of the keyboard. Not too high,
and not too low, and just about the center. So, tap that area without
waiting for the feedback if you are right. Now, the letter e is on the
top row, toward the left. Again, don't be accurate, just press the area
above the area where you think the h is, but to the left. Now, the
letter L is on the far right, around the center, meaning not all the way
at the top or bottom. Tap that area twice. Now the final letter O is
above the letters K and L, so near the right. If you recall where you
tapped for the approximate letter L area, then just tap once above that
and that will be close enough to O. Now swipe once to the right. I bet
that Fleksy will guess the word "Hello".

I hope this helps, but the thing to remember is that all you need is a
loose idea of where qwerty location of letters are in order to make the
most use of this app.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-09 Thread James Mannion
I am not solidly in one camp or the other. I use fleksy sometimes and
think it is a good app that adds value some times. I want to address
the question why you have to guess in the first place. I think that
someone asking this question is not quite getting the point. When you
type on the normal on screen keyboard you are also initially guessing
where the correct letter is as well. Then you hear if you were correct
or not. That is unless you always start at the same point and start
sliding your finger until you get the correct key. That may be
inefficient. So assuming you place your finger on the regular keyboard
where yo think the letter is that you want to enter and then adjust
for any error you have made once you get the feedback of what you
actually touched, with fleksy you also start by guessing, just like
described above with the regular keyboard, accept with fleksy you can
be incorrect and still get the correct result of the word you wanted
in the end or the correct result being offered to you as one of the
possible choices. So if you wanted to type the word good, you could in
reality have touched the letters f p p s and still end up with good.

2013-03-09 Thread Carol Pearson
Well, I feel much the same. I can use Fleksy, and understand it, but I don't
get good results. I spend most of my time rewriting words! On the other hand, I
too love BrailleTouch!

I think the Fleksy issue, for me anyway, is probably about the amount of space
you need to move between letters. It's so different from touch typing on a
computer. On the other hand, BrailleNote has a keyboard which, although a bit
different in some respects, is much more akin to writing braille normally.

I just hope that there's always a choice out there. I wouldn't like Apple to
adopt either one of these as the only choice of keyboard.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-09 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi Sandy and others,

There is a great podcast about using Fleksy on Applevis.
It helped me a lot. The only concern I have with Fleksy is that it doesn't
support my native language. Hopefully in the near future they will add more
languages.
So the more people can have the benefits of this great app.
The more practicing typing, the faster you'll type I think. :)

just my 2 cents.

Kind regards,

Alan, I am kind of glad to hear you say this because I feel the same way. I
know lots of folks love Flexie and I am genuinely glad for them, but I
simply don't get it and I don't know why. I am not stupid and I can type on
my phone, albeit it haltingly. But using Flexie simply does not produce the
words I want. And I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. If I could, I
wouldn't do it! By contrast, I love Braille touch and others hate it.
Isn't it great that we have choices? We are spoiled when compared to the

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-08 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Alan. As Grant mentioned, you don't need to know exactly where the
letters are. If you have a basic idea of where they are on the QWERTY keyboard
then you can use Fleksy without issue. Since there are several combinations of
four letter words for example which could equal a specific word you want, after
you type it and swipe to the right, Fleksy will tell you what it thinks you
mean. If that is not the right word then all you have to do is swipe down until
the right one is chosen. This is the best text predicting available on the
iPhone. I hope that helps.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-08 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello Alan, Fleksy doesn't rely on a virtual keyboard at all. The
cornerstone of Fleksy is word prediction. That means you are meant to
roughly, and quickly, tap the screen approximately where each letter
would be, if there was a virtual keyboard. It is not until you do a
flick right gesture that Fleksy determines what word it thinks you
were typing based on the combination of all your taps. If you actually
do need a keyboard (i.e. you're entering an unusual name that is not
in Fleksy's dictionary) then you simply need to touch your finger on
the screen and hold it there for a split second. VoiceOver will then
announce the letter under your finger and if necessary you can move
around until you reach the letter you need. I would recommend
investing some time in reading Fleksy's documentation, because the
paradigm is very different here. You'll find that it is much much
faster to enter dictionary words.

Hi, This keyboard is highly touted, but I have also heard from people who do
not like it. Are there pros and cons that people have after using this
keyboard? I would appreciate knowing.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-08 Thread liz and sammie
I love Fleksy for doing a quick Tweet, a facebook status update, or writing
a quick note. If I need to be more specific, I use BrailleTouch or my
blueTooth keyboard. I'm learning how to use the built-in IPhone keyboard,
but I type at a snails pace with that keyboard as of right now. I'm glad to
have different options to accomplish tasks with my phone.

I think the question is more of why should one have to guess in the first
place. There is already a vurtual keyboard.

A tip: you can send e-mail directly via Fleksy by going into the menu and by
choosing e-mail. Also if you have e-mail addresses in your favourites you can
double tap on a send to menu item and it's just a case of double tapping on
send. Another tip type the subject followed by a new line followed by your
message. This tells Fleksy the first line is the subject of the e-mail and to
treat the rest as the body.
  Happy typing!

2013-03-07 Thread Grant Hardy
I agree. On the native keyboard, I frequently can enter several common entries
(i.e. my passcode) without even waiting to hear confirmation that I touched the
right spot. In most cases, my finger lands on the correct letter or very close
to it.

Fleksy and BrailleTouch was Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-07 Thread Chris H

Hello all
I use a combination of Fleksy and BrailleTouch and they work well together.
I find that I have days where I just want to use Fleksy, days where I
just want to use BrailleTouch, and days where I want to use a bit of both.
I so can't make up my mind because I love both of these apps despite
their strengths and weaknesses.

Chris.

find buggy, and the latter I find incomplete. If you try to write out three
periods, you'll probably find a space between each of them. And of course you
lose out on the spelling checker; you are everyxpected to spell words correctly.

I have therefore given up using Fleksy, and my personal gut feeling is that Apple would probably
not wish to integrate Fleksy into the OS, at least in its current form. I don't feel that the
"elegance" and "simplicity" inherent to iOS are present (beyond the word
prediction) and I don't feel it would have universal appeal, beyond being a neat novelty, outside
of the VO/Zoom community.

I know not everyone feels this way (and I'm particularly keen to hear how
others addressed the challenges I presented) but that's just my opinion.

Cheers!

Apple would probably not wish to integrate Fleksy into the OS, at least in its
current form. I don't feel that the "elegance" and "simplicity" inherent to iOS
are present (beyond the word prediction) and I don't feel it would have
universal appeal, beyond being a neat novelty, outside of the VO/Zoom community.

I know not everyone feels this way (and I'm particularly keen to hear how
others addressed the challenges I presented) but that's just my opinion.

Cheers!

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-07 Thread Brett C.
For me, my spelling lacks luster. to use fleksy, one needs to know how to spell
every word correctly, so VoiceOver sounding the misspelled word alert, is a
time saving necessity in comparison.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-07 Thread Chris H

Hello all
yes I love Fleksy a lot and use it for both short and long messages. A
tip: you can send e-mail directly via Fleksy by going into the menu and
by choosing e-mail. Also if you have e-mail addresses in your favourites
you can double tap on a send to menu item and it's just a case of double
tapping on send. Another tip type the subject followed by a new line
followed by your message. This tells Fleksy the first line is the
subject of the e-mail and to treat the rest as the body.

Happy typing!
Chris.

Re: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-06 Thread Chuck Dean
Hi Neal,
Pros:
Fleksy has increased my typing speed by at least 50%.
It is easy to use.
it does not conflict with any other apps.
The Fleksy team is constantly updating the app to make it better.
Its fun.
Its Free.

Cons:
There is a learning period, it has some app specific gestures.
Editing is not easy in Fleksy, but I understand that they are working
on that.
Some things you will need to copy and paste, but this is fairly easy
with this app.

Try it out. Here is a link:
https://itunes.apple.com/app/fleksy-happy-typing/id520337246?mt=8

RE: What are the pros and cons of using Fleksy?

2013-03-06 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Neal,

Well, since they have made it free, that is one big pro.

It can speed up ones typing but since Apple doesn't allow other keyboards to
be made the default, you do your writing in the app, then bring up the apps
menu to then do something with the text: send as a tweet, text, Email, copy
to clipboard, etc.

I've begun to use BrailleTouch instead of Fleksy.
