Acctually Windows 8 phone will have accessibility, navigator will be on the
tablets and phones at launch. Press and hold the volume up and home buttons at
the same time and you will start navigator. Navigator is starting to feel a lot
like VoiceOver, will have to wait and see how it works on a touch screen, but
on the computer it is a lot like VO.

RE: Windows 8 and Windows phone. Any projected timeline for release?

2012-09-17 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

I've done plenty of searches, and even browsed microsofts website. They
mention no built-in screen reader for Windows Phone 8 whatsoever. They do
mention Narator for Windows RT, which is probably what you were thinking of.
If Windows Phone 8 does have this so-called Navigator, it's the first time
I've heard of it, so it was my mistake.

Hello, here is a video of the accessibility options that will be included in
Windows 8, these will work with tablets and the phones. The navigation has
changed a little bit scence this video was posted, but accessibility will be
greatly improved on all windows platforms.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5-g3Rt3c2Q
I hope this video says that windows is a little more serious about
accessibility.

Re: Windows 8 and Windows phone. Any projected timeline for release?

2012-09-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
When you say MS has been promising accessibility for years, what
products are you talking about? As far back as the 90's MS's public
policy has been to work with 3rd party screen reader vendors to produce
screen readers for Windows. I think they've delivered on this policy. It
may not be as ideal as the Apple model where you don't need a 3rd party
solution, but I don't think MS has promised us one thing here and
delivered something else. Ditto for Windows Mobile. Granted, Windows
Phone wasn't accessible when it came out, but I don't think it's been
out for more than a year yet. I think it took Apple two years to get
accessibility into the iPhone.

If were talking about Windows Phone then this should probably be taken
to a list like the accessible phones list. If we're talking about all MS
products then I'm not sure what the appropriate list would be.

Re: Windows 8 and Windows phone. Any projected timeline for release?

2012-09-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I did some quick googling, and there seems to be a lot of confusion
between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. First, they aren't the same
operating system and Windows 8 will not run on a handset. check out:
http://www.zdnet.com/is-windows-8-phone-confusion-good-for-microsoft-703777/

Windows Phone 8 is expected to come out at the end of October.

Although Windows Phone 8 has some accessibility features, it doesn't
have a screen reader. Check out:
http://wmpoweruser.com/windows-phone-8-accessibility-features-shown/

I just did some quick googling to find this information. If anyone has
more authoritative sources, please post the links, preferably to the
accessible phones mailing list.

Windows 8 comes with Narrator, and not Navigator as repeatedly stated

2012-09-17 Thread Daniel Miller
Freedom Scientific has made no mention of JAWS for Windows RT, which is the
version of Windows 8 that will run on arm-based hardware.
I know I'm not a moderator, but I'm sure they'd want this topic closed,
since it has nothing whatsoever to do with iOS or iOS devices.

Re: Windows 8 and Windows phone. Any projected timeline for release?

2012-09-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
According to
http://www.minyanville.com/sectors/technology/articles/thestreet-AAPL-GOOG-MSFT-RIMM-NOK/9/17/2012/id/44075

Windows 8 is the traditional Windows for Intel/AMD chips covering PC's,
laptops and tablets.

Windows RT (formerly Windows for ARM) will initially only be available
on tablets, although you'll have conversion options and it should also
move to ARM based laptops and PC's eventually.

Windows Phone 8 will run on cell phones, most likely from Nokia and
maybe Samsung.

Apparently these OS's share some kernel components, but they're not the
same OS's.

Hi,

I believe someone on this list recently mentioned the coming availability of
Windows 8 and a Windows phone.

For folks on this list who may wish to consider waiting on an iPhone 5 to see
what the accessibility and usability of the forthcoming Windows products are,
has anyone heard of a projected timeline for these?

Thanks in advance. Keith
