I understand that there are tripods available for the iPhone and other smart phones. it’s not just blind people who have difficulty steadying the phone. I believe that you can find tripods in the store at www.komando.com Andy From: Robert Doc Wright Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 1:32 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc what are you planning on mounting the phone on before taking your picture? *** When you give unto others whether or not they give to you in return, It matters not for your job is Complete and your rewards forthcoming. - Original Message - From: Dan Beaver To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 9:13 AM Subject: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc Hi all, I thought I'd get your opinions before I go chatting with the developers of these kinds of apps. I have found that one of the biggest difficulties I have is holding the phone steady enough to take clear pictures. I personally can't afford purchasing devices to hold the phone so I came up with another idea. I have found that I can take pretty good pics if the phone is resting on a table top or something. However, I still tend to jiggle the phone when tapping the button to take a pic or start the video and the like. My thought here is asking the developers to add the ability to activate pic taking or video starting and stopping via a sound. this would enable us to position the phone and then clap our hands or whistle or something to activate it. I figure that if you folks feel this would be helpful enough I'd start the discussion with the developers and see if they would be open to such a change. So, what do you all think? Thanks. Re: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
Hi E V. You may think Raul is over-reacting, but I don't. :) if I had not been at work when I saw your note, I would have responded, myself. So better late than never I guess. I completely stand behind everything that Raul said in reference to where this thread is going. the fact is that you do not know each person's individual efforts and how difficult or easy it might be for them to accomplish goals and / or overcome what some might see as extremely difficult tasks. No, we're sure not asking you or anyone else to keep your opinions to yourself, and I actually think you already know that. So please don't bother trying to incite heated discussion or flames. there's no need for you to retaliate. :) Everyone (you included) is always welcome to share opinions here, and after all, the original poster did ask for them. What we're suggesting is that anyone sharing such opinions just try to bare in mind how they may come across. We all have had experience where email communication might not come across like we want it to, so just keep this in mind when you write. We all work at different levels in our day-to-day lives and it's really easy to assume that everyone is capable of exactly the same things as we ourselves are capable of. However this is in a way, more of the same stereotype that we as blind and visually impaired people may experience from those who are sighted and may not be acquainted with many (or any) blind people. While it may be tempting to believe we as humans are all exactly the same, I think we all realize this is obviously not the case. :) So please do be aware of each other on this list when you share an opinion that might be controversial. I think controversy is awesome! :) -and it certainly has a place here. That's what makes us all interesting! :) We're all different, so please let's share those differences in a positive way. K? That's all… Pleas just be kind and supportive to each other. E V, you're not wrong, your sentiments can actually really inspire people to move themselves forward. Make your words positive and assist people and I think you'll be surprised at how many people actually agree with you and how many people you find that actually really are trying to move themselves to do as much as they possibly can accomplish. Help them to do this by supporting them and suggesting positive ways and resources for them. Does this make sense? Thanks so much to everyone! Please do keep your opinions coming and be cool to each other! :) Have an awesome day / weekend! Do you know what challenges someone might be faced with other than blindness, or maybe blindness is already a challenge as it is for some individuals and it's a daily struggle just to get by as it is. If I talk about me personally I can tell you that I've overcome the problems of losing my eye sight. However had someone said what you wrote to me during the first few years of me losing my sight, my response to you would be very harsh. You don't personally know my situation, whether I can overcome things or not. I agree that many things in life can be overcome, but not everyone is the same, not everyone has positive people around them, or maybe not everyone thinks in the same way to give them the ability to easily overcome challenges in life. So, before making assumptions of someone's message on list, let's step back for a bit and think how our message may sound or how it may come off. Re: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
Hi, As I said before I can't afford to purchase anything to hold it. However, I have found that I can set it on edge on the table or lean it against something so that the camera is pointed toards the object I want to identify. I have done this many times and it works well except for pressing the buttons. Thanks. RE: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
This is such a bad idea. If tasks get to difficult, then find a way to overcome your challenges. That applys to just about everything in life. Thanks. If the developers use a UIImagePickerController with its source set to camera, they should be able to use the volume up button to take a picture. Prizmo used to have a verbal activation option, you would just say “Take Picture” and it worked well. I assume since it worked in Prizmo it is possible unless Apple has changed something in iOS 6 which prevents developers from implementing such a verbal command. I can’t remember when Prizmo got rid of it and why they did so. I think if you start a dialogue with the developers of Tap Tap See and/or Talking Goggles you should definitely mention that it would be good if this default behavior which is present in the Camera app could be implemented in their apps. I think your problem would largely be solved if you could use the volume up or Play/Answer button on the headset to take the picture or start video recording although for using Talking Goggles in video mode it doesn’t really matter. First of all, you can start video and then use both hands to hold your phone whichever way you like including putting it on the table to steady it. Video mode in Talking Goggles looks all the time and it will just start recognizing text whenever it sees any. Also, if you don’t stop video but just exit the app, the next time you open the app it will already be recording already. But being able to use the volume up button on the phone or on the headset to take a picture in Tap Tap See and Goggles would definitely be a good idea. Just my two cents, and probably not worth that much. If you're using the phone at home, you could figure out a steady way to use it and not purchase a tripod or some other kind of holding device.
