iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Hi All, My iPad Mini has arrived, initial impressions are very good, it has the all over smooth gloss finish as the iPad 2 and 3 have, the build quality, despite its overall finness is solid and rigid. The weight difference is Unbelievable, I am totally amazed at how much lighter this feels compared to my iPad3. This is definitely one to be kept… speed is nippy, no difference so far in Discernible iPad3 performance and as a blind user I'm very much in favour of the smaller form factor. RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Hi Ramy, One would buy an iPad Mini for the same reason why one would buy a regular iPad or an iPod Touch and that is as a companion device for your iPhone. In the end it completely comes down to whether you can afford to buy a second device and find it useful to have a second device. One positive point is that I wouldn't have to charge my iPhone as often because when I am at home I could use an iPod Touch, iPad or iPad Mini to listen to music or a book or use apps. Some also find the large screen of an iPad useful and with the iPad Mini being siginificantly larger than an iPod Touch but noticeably smaller than the 10 inch iPad, it's a good compromise. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Sieghard, Absolutely, for me I was somewhat shocked at just how perfect this size is… To me the iPod Touch makes no sense at all, I already have an iPhone. So I've bought and used happily the iPad1, 2 and most recently the ipad3. I have just taken delivery of the iPad Mini and will also be receiving the iPad4 to compare, however, already am pretty much sold on the form factor of the Mini. Its just the right set of compromising for me… not to small to make it pointless, not to large to make it heavy and unpleasant to carry around, but, enough screen to make browsing that bit easier than on the iPhone, and, not a battery drain on the iPhone at the same time. Then there's the point of all three of the papers I read daily are all only available as full editions when viewed using the iPad App. So this is a spot on size for me, portable, light weight, surprisingly so, thin, and just right. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Kawal, That I can do, putting my iPhone 5 directly on top of the iPad Mini, the iPhone 5 is a third of the size almost exactly. In other words, if you put 3 iPhone 5's side by side, this is almost the exact size taken up by the iPad Mini. It is the same thickness give or take as an iPhone 5… I can very easily hold it in one hand and can very easily use it with two… the weight is the biggest benefit, being half that of the larger full size iPad… it makes holding and using far easier and less strenuous. The Telegraph that I read daily has the full edition on the iPad only, not on the iPhone. likewise; New York Times, The Times (UK), The Economist, The Financial Times etc. These are all only available as full content, as if you had the actual paper in your hands, on the iPad not the iPhone. They all offer cut down material for the iPhone, but, not every article, every element. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Hello Neil, and others, Does the App Store search glitch exist on the mini, as it does its larger brethren? I suspect the answer here is yes, but am curious nevertheless. Thanks in advance for your response, and do keep us posted as to how you go with your new friend. :) Sent from my iPhone On Nov 2, 2012, at 12:08 PM, "Cristobal" wrote: > Do you still have to deal with containers on the Mini? > > -Original Message- > From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf > Of Neil Barnfather - TalkNav > Sent: Friday, November 02, 2012 3:15 AM > To: viphone@googlegroups.com; The Accessible Phones Discussion List > Subject: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions > > Hi All, > > My iPad Mini has arrived, initial impressions are very good, it has the all > over smooth gloss finish as the iPad 2 and 3 have, the build quality, > despite its overall finness is solid and rigid. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Neal, Are you reading Economist and NY Times via newstand? When I tried the NY Times last on my full-sized iPad, it was really not accessible, whereas the iPhone app is perfectly so. And I think they say that the app on the phone offers all the content as well. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Ok, I was thinking about this, and getting tempted all the time!... but the lady needs to check if her hands are large enough to hold an iPhone comfortably in landscape; it looks like it could be a bit of a stretch. But if you can get a good grip with thumb one end and fingers the other; then the Mini will work sideways. I tend to phone up the general number and buy over the phone, so need to know most of this before it arrives, or we can get unexpected surprises. Ok, if they were expected, they wouldn't be a surprise. The gears are slipping in the brainbox. Anyway, UK: 0800-048-0408; free hsipping. I'm precisely where you are Rob. Am off to play with one in a few minutes, and will pass along my thoughts/observations upon returning. Granted, playing while at Apple is different to doing so in your own space, amid your own apps, though perhaps I'm merely making a psychological case for desperately wanting one? Nevertheless, TBC. to the best of my knowledge, none of them have a vibration mechanism built in, nor does the Touch. HTH...though the pad does have the ability to be muted, though I'm unsure of whether the Mini does. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
OK, I'll try and cover all questions in one hit: None of the iPad's, inc the latest 4th generation and Mini have vibration functionality. The mini has containers as with the larger iPad versions. I personally can quite comfortably and easily hold the iPad Mini in portrait rotation, with the device between my thumb on one side and four remaining fingers the other side. Leaving one hand completely free to touch / type. It should be noted that this is how Phil Schillinger, Apple's product chap, demonstrated it during the press conference introducing iPad Mini. iBooks is another good case for the iPad, good point well made. The iPad Mini also has, and I'm not quite sure how important this is, but, also has stereo speakers for use when in portrait orientation, of course, would have made more sense in landscape, but, never mind. I think my wife best summed up the iPad Mini with the following comment. We currently own two iPad's, both 3rd generation, bought in March. I was thinking of getting a third new one this time, as our children use them a lot too. When I showed her the Mini her response was, oh, yes, that looks nice, I assume I'll be getting one as well? RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Rick, I had been considering the Mini as a means of cancelling telephone service and just using Google Voice or Skype for the very occasional calls I make. I had ordered the WIFI and cellular device. I wish the Touch came in a cellular version because it just seems the added screen size of even the Mini is wasted for those of us with no sight. In the meantime, I changed my Verizon plan, which now gives me unlimited talk time. While I do make few calls, they do tend to be lengthy. How did someone who doesn't like talking on the phone end up with friends who use it so much? So, I decided I would cancel my Mini order. It was interesting that I had placed my order within the first 2 hours of Apple taking orders, and I was told the WIFI/cellular would ship mid November, when I looked at the ship date at cancellation it was November 23. All of that might be of no interest, but what I will be curious to see from you guys who got the Mini, the totally blind users, what advantages are you seeing to having it and an IPhone? I have not discounted getting one, but I did think I would wait until I at least got to hold one before ordering. Thanks for comments on how you see yourself using the Mini along with your phone and maybe why a WIFI Mini has advantages over a WIFI Touch. The best! Likewise, I'm tempted to get the Mini. I'm trying to deside if I want to pay the 130 price difference between the 5th generation ipod touch 32gb or the ipad mini 32gb. I was hoping Apple would have had a lower price on the Mini. You can get a Nexus 7 32gb tablet for $250.00. -Original Message- From: Eric SS Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2012 5:46 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions Rick, I had been considering the Mini as a means of cancelling telephone service and just using Google Voice or Skype for the very occasional calls I make. The best! Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
First, thank you for the replies about the lackof vibration in the new iPads. I was sure that was the case, but thought I'd double check. As for the discussion about the iPad mini, I wasn't aware there were iBooks available only on the iPad. That seems rather silly to me. Sure, the iPad has a bigger screen, but what's the point of making content like that not available on the iPhone/iPod? Even if there are animated things in some of the material, I'd think an iPhone 4s or 5 could handle that easily enough. Scott On 11/3/12, Russ Kiehne wrote: > Likewise, I'm tempted to get the Mini. Scott, Its not about processor power, its all about the layout area, people like their books to look nice, to be presented as they desired them to look. There's just no way that a lot of books look right, or certainly how the author intended, when displayed on a 3.5in / 4in screen. so the issue is not technological, its pure and simple realostaste. RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Hi Rob, Yes, there is a big price difference between an iPad Mini and a Nexus 7 inch tablet, but it is not exactly like comparing "Apples to Apples" pun intended. The iPad Mini screen in area is a third larger even though on the diagonal it's only 7 inches to 7.9 inches, this is one thing they really emphasized during the keynote. On the other hand the Nexus has a better screen resolution since the iPad Mini is only 1024 by 768. I strongly believe, however, that Apple will release an updated iPad Mini within 6 or so months which will have a retina screen. Of course this is just a prediction, but given the fact that they updated the big iPad twice this year and that now all their iDevices except for the iPad 2 which is still around and the iPad Mini are retina including their 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pros I wouldn't be surprised if that was coming fairly soon. Lastly, there is of course that little issue of accessibility for everybody on this list and while you can buy an Android tablet for a lot less, you can also get a bunch of Android phones for a lot less, but I still wouldn't want to go back to the 18th accessibility century. OK, I know some people disagree with that, so please do so off-list. Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group. On the iPad Mini I find it plenty loud enough, it has two speakers, running in stereo, and I watched a movie on it the other day, very good indeed. RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Eric, My intended uses for the Mini are the following. 1. Reading and replying to email, something that I find somewhat tedious on my 4s. On the Mini just as the regular ipad, you have containers so when using it for mail, it is very similar to what you would see in Outlook, or Outlook Express in that you have a list of messages on one part of the screen with the message content on another part so it's a split interface. I find this interface much more pleasant to use. This means I can now use the Mini anywhere in the house for mail without having to spend hours a day in front of my computer. 2. The Mini has very pleasant sounding speakers so it's great for listening to podcasts. For me, it's a nicer experience than on the phone. The speakers aren't' terribly loud, but certainly loud enough. For me the Mini is really a consumption device for podcasts, books, both audio and non-audio. This would also hold true for the iPod but with the added benefit of a larger screen and more reading area. Surfing on the Mini is really nice. I suggest you check one out before purchasing an iPod to see if it suits your usage patterns. Personally, I don't like wearing headphones which is another reason why I like the Mini with its built-in speakers. The best! Hi neil, how do you think the sound of the mini compares to that of the ipad 3? I am hearing impaired. It is becoming more difficult to understand bookshare books on my phone. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Linda, I actually find, given that the iPad Mini has two speakers, that it can go quite loud indeed. Since there is a risk free trial on all Apple products I'd suggest if you think you might like a Mini to buy one. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Hi, I just got an iPad 4 for Christmas and love it. You mention the Economist on the iPad. I am an avid reader and the iPhone version was pretty accessible, but I find the iPad version almost inaccessible entirely. I can navigate the table of contents and enter articles with no problem but VoiceOver won't read the text of the article. It will read the title and tagline plus "next page" and "previous page" buttons. No article text though. Am I nuts or do I have to start complaining? I notice the NY Times update that came out today took away that problem for me on the iPad. Kudos.
