Re: lost my Plantronics M50

2013-05-20 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, for what you are looking for I would still recommend the Plantronics
M50. It's only flaw, well, other than the microphone, is that the talk
button cannot be used to start and stop audio. I think that Plantronics
views this as a feature, not a bug because it's meant for phone calls
and listening to phone audio, but they say for things like GPS. Yet,
later in the description it says you can listen to music, which of
course you can, but I think that pausing and playing music should be
allowed via the talk button like many other headsets, or ear pieces.
(Alan). In any case, the M50 is small, comfortable, and very
comfortable. When I had mine if I was in a noisy environment and
received a phone call, many times it was easier to turn it off and just
use the phone like normal. If I was in a quiet environment, then it
would work ok for phone calls. But most of all, it worked great for
hearing Voice Over notifications when I am out, or hearing apps like
Ariadne, or Blind Square or Navigon. I miss mine.

Hi Sherry,

I guess we have to wait and see what Raul says, but my guess is
that you
can't control playback with the M50. It seems that things like
Play/Pause,
Previous and Next and so on are relatively common features on
Bluetooth
stereo headsets, but are not part of single earpieces. I had bought a
Jawbone ERA at one point which is one of the more expensive
headsets and I
currently have a Jabra Supreme which is also $99 and neither one
of them
allowed you to do Play/Pause which for me would be enough.

At least the new Audible app is now much better at resuming
playback after a
phone call. Before the update it would pause when a call came in,
but after
the call was done it would not resume and if I was using my Jabra
and had
the phone tucked away I always had to dig out the phone and start
the book
again. Now it continues to play after the call and for me that's a
huge
improvement.

Sieghard

Right Andy, but even the Plantronics M50 is referred to as a headset and
with Stereo support. This is because it goes on some part of your head,
even if it's just a piece of your ear, and it has A2DP support, which in
most cases is for stereo playback of audio. The fact that it's just in
one ear and that's it's not true stereo is beside the point. The fact
that VoiceOver needs A2DP to work properly is definitely important
whether the headset fits over 1, 2, or 3 ears.

Hi all. yesterday I went to Austin to take a certification test for the
state so I can legally train consumers with the state. In any case, I
took my Plantronics M50 head phone, or rather, ear piece since it's for
a single ear, with me, and somewhere between leaving the Chris Cole
center and the Greyhound bus I lost it. I don't know if I dropped it out
of my shirt pocket when I took something else out of it, or if I took it
off and just left it there in the station. In any case, today I went out
for some personal life things and really missed having the ear piece
with me. So, now I find myself at Amazon, ready to purchase a
replacement M50, but then am thinking that since I love exploring new
items and trying out new things, maybe I should get a different kind.
Then when I think of this I have second and third thoughts because I
really like the M50. It's super light, has decent enough volume, and

I think this is turning out to be a very good discussion. What makes a good
ear peace and what makes a good head set and what are you willing to put up
with. I guess if it didn't interfere with hearing outside sounds to compromise
personal safety, I'd consider anything.

I have some wonderful headsets that are one ear only, Many will record
almost professionally on a large variety of recorders, although not on the
iPhone. They also have both channels of the stereo signal coming into one
ear. They are called headsets by the manufacturer. Most manufacturers I am
aware of distinguish between the one ear and two ear types in just that way.
Thus, they refer to them as a single ear or two ear headset. People are
obviously free to call them what they wish, but I will use the manufacturers
label for these in any communication to this and other list, while noting
the one or two ear information, les there be any misunderstanding of what I
am describing. s.

Hi there. Unfortunately these series of earpieces or headsets do not start
and stop audio playback when you press the talk button. I feel that is
probably one of their only flaws. I also have the Motorola S 11 headset
which is a stereo headset covering both ears and looping around the back of
your head. The talk button will pause and play music as well as answer phone

calls. If I can find a single earpiece Bluetooth headset who's talk button
will also start and stop music I might consider that one over the
Plantronics.

Well, I'd go with wikipedia over advertising myself. I'd also scour any
advertising information I was reviewing to make sure I was getting what
I thought I was getting. BTW, my understanding of head set predates
anything I read on wikipedia and goes back to the days when I was
getting wired head sets to use with my telephone or the VOIP software on
my PC.

I also don't think you necessarily have to give up any quality on a
stereo head set over a stereo pair of head phones. There's no reason the
same audio technology can't be included in both. Another way to put it,
is that you don't have to sacrifice audio quality when you include a
mike or controls on the head set.

Hi Alan, I see where you are coming from, but if the manufacturers
themselves aren't using the so-called correct terms, then how would a
user look for a product when it's discussed as an ear piece on the list,
but listed as a headset on a shopping web site? This is why we should

2013-05-20 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hey all. After careful deliberating I decided on going with the
Plantronics M50 again as my replacement. I like it enough to buy another
one after losing mine last Friday. In looking at the top 10 headsets,
and yes, they are all called headsets, sold on Amazon, the M50 is
currently at number 2. It used to be at number 1 for a long time, but
considering the fact that this isn't the latest and greatest single-ear
headset around from them, it's saying something. I agree with Neil that
the microphone leaves some to be desired, but for the audio playback,
the size, and the comfort, it's still a winner for me.

Just to recap, the following are a few pros and cons of the Plantronics M50.

Pros.
1. Small and light-weight.
2. Easy and quick power on/off switch.
3. Good audio supporting A2DP.
4. Easy to pair with any Bluetooth device.
5. Long battery life.
6. Uses standard Micro-USB charger. Not proprietary.
7. Can wear all day with little or no ear fatigue.

Cons.
1. Answer/Hangup button doesn't start/stop playback of audio.
2. Answer/Hangup button can be pressed by accident if you are on a call
and try to adjust the headset, erm, sorry, ear piece. grin.
3. Voice announcement of low battery or power on/off seems to be set to
maximum volume regardless of what you set the headset to.

4. Microphone for phone calls isn't very good. At least with my voice.

So, there you have it folks. I've posted about this M50 before on this
list. So, feel free to look at those messages to see what else I've said
about it.

Hi all. yesterday I went to Austin to take a certification test for
the state so I can legally train consumers with the state. In any
case, I took my Plantronics M50 head phone, or rather, ear piece
since it's for a single ear, with me, and somewhere between leaving
the Chris Cole center and the Greyhound bus I lost it. I don't know
if I dropped it out of my shirt pocket when I took something else out
of it, or if I took it off and just left it there in the station. In
any case, today I went out for some personal life things and really
missed having the ear piece with me. So, now I find myself at Amazon,
ready to purchase a replacement M50, but then am thinking that since
I love exploring new items and trying out new things, maybe I should get
 a different kind.
Then when I think of this I have second and third thoughts because I
really like the M50. It's super light, has decent enough volume, and
since I mainly use it for VoiceOver and Audio book or podcast
listening, I am hesitant to buy another different brand.

I've looked at this list's archives and see a few other models people
have recommended, but I'm still not sure.

I guess there is no point to this message other than saying that if
you get used to something and then you don't have it, you will know
how much you really liked it if you miss it a lot.

Raul, I took a look at the M 50 and noticed below at the M 55. It seemed to
have a few more features that I hope will be accessible because I went ahead

It has some service they call Vocalizer that will read messages, email and

it would be after that. I don't know if anyone has tested this for
accessibility.

I did not have anyone around to look at the difference in profile between the

Hi, that voice service is just eye candy... Ha ha, or should I say,
iCandy. LOL. Most people who have commented on it from the M55, and the
other ones which support that service like the M155 and M165 didn't like
it that much. So, I wouldn't get too excited about it. I think someone
said the first year is free. Afterwards it's like $20 per year.

maybe you will have better luck with it. When I briefly had the M165 I
didn't even bother with it since it wasn't something I was looking for
when purchasing a Bluetooth headset. I ended up getting a refund for the
M165 since I didn't care for it at all. The only thing it had going for
it was it's small size. Even smaller than the M50 and M55.

It has some service they call Vocalizer that will read messages, email and
news, etc. they say the service is free for a year, but I did not find how much
it would be after that. I don't know if anyone has tested this for

I did not have anyone around to look at the difference in profile between the

I see you said you use the M50 for audiobooks a lot. Can you start and stop
the book with the earpiece? I have the Blue Ant and I can not control books
or music with it. And to contact Siri I have to say Phone Commands and then
wait while the earpiece says a whole long sentence about connecting to my
phone's built in phone commands.
It is ok for calls and listening to voice over when I am holding the phone
and flicking but I really miss the music and book control.

So don't get the Blue Ant for books.

Hi all. yesterday I went to Austin to take a certification test for the

took my Plantronics M50 head phone, or rather, ear piece since it's for
a single ear, with me, and somewhere between leaving the Chris Cole
center and the Greyhound bus I lost it.
It's super light, has decent enough volume, and
since I mainly use it for VoiceOver and Audio book or podcast listening,
I am hesitant to buy another different brand.

I've looked at this list's archives and see a few other models people
have recommended, but I'm still not sure.

I guess there is no point to this message other than saying that if you

RE: lost my Plantronics M50

2013-05-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sherry,

I guess we have to wait and see what Raul says, but my guess is that you
can't control playback with the M50. It seems that things like Play/Pause,
Previous and Next and so on are relatively common features on Bluetooth
stereo headsets, but are not part of single earpieces. I had bought a
Jawbone ERA at one point which is one of the more expensive headsets and I
currently have a Jabra Supreme which is also $99 and neither one of them
allowed you to do Play/Pause which for me would be enough.

At least the new Audible app is now much better at resuming playback after a
phone call. Before the update it would pause when a call came in, but after
the call was done it would not resume and if I was using my Jabra and had
the phone tucked away I always had to dig out the phone and start the book
again. Now it continues to play after the call and for me that's a huge
improvement.

Sieghard

Re: lost my Plantronics M50

2013-05-19 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi there. Unfortunately these series of earpieces or headsets do not start and
stop audio playback when you press the talk button. I feel that is probably one
of their only flaws. I also have the Motorola S 11 headset which is a stereo
headset covering both ears and looping around the back of your head. The talk
button will pause and play music as well as answer phone calls. If I can find a
single earpiece Bluetooth headset who's talk button will also start and stop
music I might consider that one over the Plantronics.

Re: lost my Plantronics M50

2013-05-19 Thread Alan Paganelli
It sounds to me like allot of people are misunderstanding the differences
between an ear peace and a head set. An ear peace is for making and answering
phone calls. A head set is for listening to music but may also answer phone
calls.

If I want to listen to music, I use a head set with no mike. I'm sitting down,
laying down etc. The reason is I'm listening to music and not out on the
streets walking around. When I am, I use a Bluetooth ear peace which lets me
make and take phone calls it does not let me listen to music. I don't need the
distractions of music when I'm going somewhere. I'm usually taking my cane
these days as my Leader Dog is retired and I don't like the wus dogs the
schools are putting out now.

i think that the design philosophy here is that single ear pieces are
primarily meant for phone calls, and they think that if you are going to
listen to music or audio books that you will want a stereo headset.

Hi all. yesterday I went to Austin to take a certification test for the
state so I can legally train consumers with the state.
It's super light, has decent enough volume, and
since I mainly use it for VoiceOver and Audio book or podcast listening,
I am hesitant to buy another different brand.

I've looked at this list's archives and see a few other models people
have recommended, but I'm still not sure.

I guess there is no point to this message other than saying that if you
get used to something and then you don't have it, you will know how much
you really liked it if you miss it a lot.

Dear listers,

I'm following this discussion carefully as I want a Bluetooth device
but as I can't just try several out I keep trying to pick one from other
people's descriptions. Despite Alan's comments I would prefer a single ear
piece that I could use for audio books, GPS, phone calls, and music between
things. I don't need stereo all the time to enjoy books and even music. I do
want a responsive comfortable single ear piece that is not too noticeable and
does not block outside sound.
Please keep the descriptions and experiences coming.

And, concerning recent guide dogs my recent February 2013 graduate is the best
trained dog I've ever had and Alan, he is not a wuss. at least as I understand
the derogatory term.

Where do you get these definitions of ear pieces and headsets? I ask
because they differ from my understanding. A headset are headphones that
include a mike and allow for hands free operation, whether this be for
one ear or both. This is also what wikipedia says is meant by a headset
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_%28audio%29

Sounds like when you're listening to music, you're using a pair of
stereo headphones and not a headset.

Either way, I think the understandings here are nebulous enough that
people should just be clear about what they're talking about and what
they're asking about.

Hi Raul,

I can certainly feel your pain although that might be too strong a word for
losing your M50. I am finding myself using Blindsquare and so on a lot more
these days because my dog is out of commission for at least 2 months with a
torn ACL. This happened while I was in Thailand when he was playing with
other dogs and I can tell you that after 10 years of using a White Cane,
then 20 years of using my so far 2 dogs and now temporarily being back to
the Cane I can really appreciate what these dogs do for us. I live in a very
small town and rarely use the GPS with my dog, but the sidewalks here are
quite often horrible with lots of gravel and often very few landmarks
indicating when you actually go across a cross street. Blindsquare really
comes in handy here.

Unfortunately the $3,000 surgery right after a fairly expensive holiday also
means no budget for toys for a while *smile*. I did, however, pick up a $15
iTunes gift card on my way home tonight and I'll give Jaws and iTunes a try
shortly and report back.
