The iPhone 7 does have a home button. Wherever you found that from is obviously
giving false information. The only difference about the button is that
haptic,it's and a mechanical.

The 7 home button is just an indented round spot on the screen. Your
fingerprint still gets read there. It does seem smaller in diameter to me than
the old home button. I don't have a 7, but my sister as a newby has one. (can
you say tough learning curve!) She is in another state, so I can't take another
look at it right now.

Re: no home button?

2016-11-09 Thread Wayne Merritt
One difference between the actual Home button on older iPhones and the
Home button on the new iPhone 7: if you turn the iPhone 7/Plus off,
nothing will happen to the Home button when you push it in. This is
different from older phones where even when the phone is off, the
button could be pressed. Of course, nothing would happen to the phone
in that case, but still it is a way to see if your iPhone 7 is off.

I am teaching a student with neuropathy who has an iPhone 5S. He
self-reports that he can feel the home button on my iPhone 7 better
than he can on his 5S.

RE: no home button?

2016-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Another great way to tell if the phone is off would be to flick the mute
switch, if it is off nothing happens, if it is on there should be a brief
vibration when you flick it towards the back to the mute position.

One difference between the actual Home button on older iPhones and the Home
button on the new iPhone 7: if you turn the iPhone 7/Plus off, nothing will
happen to the Home button when you push it in. This is different from older
phones where even when the phone is off, the button could be pressed. Of
course, nothing would happen to the phone in that case, but still it is a way
to see if your iPhone 7 is off.

I am teaching a student with neuropathy who has an iPhone 5S. He self-reports
that he can feel the home button on my iPhone 7 better than he can on his 5S.

Rebooting A Phone With No Home Button?

2020-04-07 Thread Don Moore
I've got the iPhone 11 because my 8 broke open. I was looking to reboot my
phone, and while the button on the right does allot of stuff, I couldn't
make it shut down to reboot it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-28 Thread Holly

Hello group:

I am considering upgrading to a IPhone 10. I now have a iPhone 7.

One thing I was wondering about is the fact that the 10 has no home button.
I like to take my phone to bed at night and keep it under my pillow. I
enable the 'do not disturb' feature from the time I go to bed until morning,
so I won't get any alerts or calls.

When I wake up during the night, I can just find my phone under my pillow,
put it under my ear and hit the home button to hear the time announced.
This way I don't disturb my sleeping spouse.

If I got a 10, what gesture would I have to make, or what button would I
press to hear the time announced?

Thanks in advance.

Holly

Press the volume up button once

Press the volume down button once

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button

Keep holding even when you see Slide to Power Off

Keep holding until you see the Apple logo

So, basically, press volume up, then press volume down, then hold the power
button for probably about 15 seconds.

2020-04-07 Thread Diane Giannetti
With the volume down in the volume up and then hitting the power button, that
will do a hard reboot. Without a hard reboot is that however, if you just want
to shut it down normally just do the volume down and power button and hold that
until you hear it say either emergency or whatever it’s gonna say and then you
bring it back to where it says Power off and double tap on that and it will be
off.

Re: Rebooting A Phone With No Home Button?

2020-04-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
I've had the best success when pressing the volume up button, then
volume down, and then holding the power for a few seconds. It usually
takes a couple of seconds and then I get a power off button. As
mentioned earlier, if you want a hard reboot, hold the power button
for 10 to 15 seconds and then release. It will take a little bit
longer, but VoiceOver will come back. I'm doing this on an iPhone XR.

Be well,
Wayne

Re: iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-28 Thread regina alvarado

Holly, in settings on the X there is a setting in accessibility to be able to
just tap the screen. It will take you to your notifications and if I remember
correctly it will give you the time or you can swipe to it. Screen is still
locked however, and face ID is necessary to read any notifications. Please
someone correct me if I am incorrect where this option is.

Speaking of that screen when you tap the locked screen. I found a way to give
light to face ID on this screen as it has a difficult time with face ID in
darkness. If I turn on the flashlight in the lower left corner it will give
enough light to unlock the notification screen. When I hear it unlock I turn
off the flashlight again and swipe from the bottom of the screen to go to the
home screen.

If I got a 10, what gesture would I have to make, or what button would I press

RE: iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-28 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I was going to give the same answer. I have an XR, but same deal. A quick press
of the power button on the side.
That said, I prefer to use a tactile means of checking the time to not bug my
wife if I just want to know what time it is.
In the past, I've repurposed a cheap analog clock you can buy from any Walmart
or Target or whatever by popping out the front plastic face and marking it up
like any braille watch. This works well enough, but often these things are so
cheaply made, the clock hands eventually fall off regardless of how careful you
may be when checking the time.
I recently grabbed myself a Bradley Element tactile watch and now use this to
check the time in the middle of the night. These aren't cheap watches, but I
wanted a watch that wasn't a smartwatch anyway and now it doubles as a
nightstand clock for me too.
I believe Apple watches have the ability to check the time via vibration
patterns. I'm not interested in an Apple watch so haven't really followed these
types of threads so don't recall if it's a built in function of the watch or
perhaps through a third party app.
I've tried more standard fair braille watches from the typical blindness
related stores and have found them to generally be poorly made and with not so
attractive designs. They usually break within six months for me.
I'm not aware of any sort of app that can give the time in a vibrating/muted
pattern, but it would be helpful to have something like this on the phone and
not just the watch.

Not sure the side button works by pushing the power button. I just tried it,
and all I can get it to say from locked screen is 8 notifications. Sure wished
it worked. If I want to read my notifications from that screen I unlock. Hmmm!
Maybe accessibility needs to get this suggestion.

Re: iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-28 Thread Holly

Thanks
Cristóbal:

I am not very good at braille. I can just turn the volume down on my phone
and slip it under my pillow. The pillow mutes the sound and I can hear the
time announce without disturbing my hubby.

So, as I understand it, just tapping the power button on the 10R would
announce the time whether it was locked or not.

Thanks for all of your help.

Bye the way, how do the owners of the 10r like it compared to the 7?

RE: iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-28 Thread Vivian Conger
Just tapping the Power button will work as long as you don't have any
notifications that came in while you were sleeping. When someone texts me or I
get a news alert it will go on the screen that comes up when I push the Power
button. If there is anything listed there that I haven't cleared, then I don't
get the time but get the notifications read.

I hope this makes sense.

RE: iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-28 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
To be clear, a braille watch really is a misnomer. Be it a clock or watch,
you're talking more about simple tactile markers. There's no braille involved.
Markings at every hour and a bigger/different marking at the 12, 3, 6 and 9
o'clock locations. They're just referred as braille watches I guess to convey
that they're meant for the blind. I believe a couple of "smart watches" for the
blind that incorporates Braille into them have come out, but that's a totally
separate deal.
The Bradley watch works a bit different since it uses ball barings to indicate
the time, but again, you tell the time by markings. No braille.
The XR is fine. I don't really care for Face ID, but oh well. Tomato/tommato.

Hi Holly,

I don’t have an iPhone X, but when I want to get the time on my iPhone 8+, I
hit the power button. My phone is usually locked in if I hit the power button,
that gives me the time. If the iPhone X has the same power button on the side,
I would think that would work. Certainly, those who have an iPhone X will

RE: iPhone 10 question about no home button

2019-01-30 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I have it turned off on my SE and don't think I'd turn it on on any iPhone I'd
be getting in the future.

As I understand it, if you have facial recognition, all you have to do is lift
your phone while looking at it, and the Home Screen will come on.

When I first got my phone, Raise to Wake was active, and turning it off helped
a lot with battery life.

Best regards,

Carolyn

I don’t have an iPhone X, but when I want to get the time on my iPhone 8+, I

There is a gesture for home, app switcher and control center and
notifications. The rest of the stuff is done with the side button such
as Siri and turning voice over on and off.

RE: Work around to cope with No home button

2019-05-11 Thread Richard Turner
I found these on a web site but since I do not have a device without a home
button, I cannot confirm that they all work. I do know the ones for going to
the home screen, app switcher, Control Center, and Notification Center work
since I have clients with these devices. Haven't tried the rest.

For devices without a home button:
Side button replacing Home button commands
• Unlock Phone: Facial Recognition, or tap the Side button and enter
your passcode
• Accessibility Shortcut: Triple click of the Side button
• Screenshot: Simultaneously press and quickly release the Side button
and Volume Up button
• Activate Siri: Press and hold the Side button
• Turn off the iPhone: Click and hold the Side button and Volume up or
down button. The Slide to Power Off screen will appear. Release the buttons!
(It’s crucial to release the buttons because Emergency SOS will automatically
activate if you continue to hold them down. Then double tap the power off
button on the screen
• Activate Apple Pay: Double click the Side button
New Gestures replacing function of the Home button
Starting at the bottom of the screen and slide one finger up. You will feel
three haptic vibrations referred to as "clicks" (similar to the old "click"
when pressing the Home button). Each of these three clicks will activate a
function. Note: The first click alerts you that you are in the feature.
• Return to the Home screen: From the bottom of the screen slide one
finger up until the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
• Activate the App Switcher: From the bottom of the screen, slide one
finger up until you feel the third click. Lift your finger from the screen.
• Activate Teachability mode (if enabled in Settings): From the bottom of
the screen, slide one finger up until you feel the first click. Quickly flick
down.
Starting at the top of the screen, slide one finger down to feel the clicks.
• Access the Control Center: From the top of the screen, slide one finger
down until you feel the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
• Access the Notification Center: From the top of the screen, slide one
finger down until you feel the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.

There are Podcasts on Applevis, somebody can of course describe the gestures,
but hearing them demonstrated is probably more useful.
