RE: Why should I upgrade?

2023-09-28 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yes, I have an iPhone 11, and I've been able to use the camera app to recognize
text and things around me for at least a year. On my work iPhone, which comes
in a big chunky case, I've stood the iPhone up in front of my work laptop and
used it to monitor my boot process.

No, only the ability to recognize text in the Magnifier is new in iOS 17 and
requires a phone with a LiDAR sensor, this means either one of the following:
iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max (the first model to have LiDAR)
iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max
iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max
iPhone 15/15 Pro Max

RE: Why should I upgrade?

2023-09-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'd suggest try using the Camera app. Bring up the camera app, touch the top of
the screen to put focus in the view finder and then start pointing the phone at
things. You can sweep it around and hear things like there's a sign on the wall
with text and then it'll read the text. Obviously it'll depend a bit on how
quickly you're sweeping the phone around and how steady your hand is, but this
seems more responsive to me than the Seeing AI app.

I'm also interested to know how text detection in the magnifier works, and how
it's different or better than just using the camera app.

It is my understanding that the text recognition in the Magnifier app/feature
does this, if not use the Seeing AI short text channel which definitely would
do it if it sees any information it can read.

RE: Why should I upgrade?

2023-09-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The normal camera app will also do text recognition, so I'm not sure what's
different in the magnifier and LiDAR.

I'm not upgrading from my iPhone 11. The action button and the USB-C are the
features that interest me the most, but they'll still be there when I get
around to upgrading.

It will give you door detection and there is a new instant text recognition
feature which is part of Magnifier, but I am not sure if it's really all that
much better than what you can already get with Seeing AI.
I don't think Be My Eyes and the new Be My AI feature which is part of Be My
Eyes relies on LiDAR in any way.
I bought a 13 Pro last year and decided to go with a Pro and not a regular 13
because of this, but I must say that except for playing around with it, I have
never used door detection even once in the real world.
My advice is to stick with your 13 Mini and get an iPhone 16 Pro next year,
some of the new stuff in the 15 Pro will then be in its second generation so to
speak and may get useful improvements. I have definitely no intention to
upgrade this year from my 13 Pro to a 15 Pro, the action button might be the
most tempting new feature, but it's not worth that much money and even if I
don't want to spend the big bucks next year for a 16 Pro, I can get a better
deal on a 15 pro once the 16 phones have been released.

RE: Why should I upgrade?

2023-09-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I'll probably send a message to Be My Eyes because I think if they could take
advantage of the LiDAR sensor in the Pro phones that descriptions provided by
Be My AI could become even better, for example, it could describe a picture and
potentially include information like the approximate size or if it mentions
objects in the picture it could say something like "there is a lawn mower
approx. 8 metres away".

Jennifer,
LIDAR can help for object recognition. But have you tried Be My Eyes AI on
your 13 mini?
I posted an email from the makers of Be My Eyes within the last day or so
concerning how they are making that feature more widely available. I do not
believe it depends on LIDAR. I also do not think LIDAR will help that much in
text recognition. The Be My Eyes AI feature is by far the best for object
recognition.

Subject: Be My AI soon available for Be My Eyes users on iOS

We are thrilled to announce that Be My AI will soon be available to hundreds of
thousands of Be My Eyes users on iOS devices worldwide!

Thanks to the tremendous work of over 19,000 beta testers and the team at Be My
Eyes, we’re moving to an open beta phase and releasing Be My AI to our iPhone
users starting this week. Over the next few weeks we will be adding more and
more users every day, so that soon everyone using an iOS device will have
direct access to our new AI-powered feature. Make sure to keep your app
updated.

While using Be My AI is not intended to replace a white cane or a guide dog,
using it in your everyday life is powerful, quick and simple. Once you have
access, open the Be My Eyes app, click on the ‘Be My AI’ tab, and take a
picture of just about anything. Be My AI will give you a detailed description
of it, and you can chat and ask further questions to get more information. Be
My AI is available now in any of 19 languages, with more to come.

And don’t worry - if Be My AI can’t answer all your questions, if you want to
check its results, or if you just need a little more assistance than Be My AI
can provide, you still can easily reach one of our dedicated volunteers, just
like before.

You can learn more about Be My AI and how to use it in our new blog post or by
visiting the Help Center on our website.

This global release of Be My AI into an open beta test means that hundreds of
thousands of people will now be able to experience this exciting new tool. Make
sure to share the news with your friends, family and colleagues!

Right now we’ll only be releasing Be My AI with users who use iOS devices. But
Android users fear not. We are currently in a closed beta test of Be My AI on
Android devices, and we hope to make it more broadly available for open beta
testing in the coming months. If you are interested in joining the Android beta
test, you can already sign up for the Android waitlist in the Be My Eyes app.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at

And happy exploring!

P.S: Do you know another blind or low-vision person who can benefit from this
new feature? Make sure to forward this email to them and invite them to try out

RE: Should I upgrade from Apple Watch series 3 to latest model?

2023-03-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

If you waited this long and considering we are now half way to the next major
Apple September release, I would probably keep the series 3 Apple Watch and
upgrade to one of the new Apple Watches this fall which I assume will be the
series 9.
I never bought the initial Apple Watch, but my wife and I bought the second
Generation and then we upgraded a few years later to the Apple Watch 5th
generation and we both still have them. I remember that going from 2nd to 5th
generation came with a big speed bump and I was definitely not unhappy as at
times using my 2nd generation was painfully sluggish.

Now I am still quite happy with the 5th generation except for using it in the
pool and here I really don't know if a new 8th generation watch would be much
better, but I find it extremely frustrating and useless for use in water.
First of all, even when I don't yet have waterlock on, I find the watch very
difficult to use when I have wet fingers and the watch is just a bit wet on the
touch screen.
Secondly, once I start my pool swim workout and waterlock engages, the watch is
entirely useless for a Voiceover user until you press and hold the digital
crown to turn waterlock off, then at first if you still have wet fingers you
again deal with the frustration of the touch screen either not reacting well or
doing all sorts of things you don't want it to do; it foten goes to the third
workout screen which is your currently playing screen, then you have to try to
get it back to the second screen if I want to see actually any details about
how long I was swimming and how many length I did and so on. I really have to
get into the habit to bring a small towel or something so I can wipe the watch
dry and dry my fingers.
Lastly, even at 100% volume it's not easy to hear what Voiceover is saying in a
pool setting where there is echo and typically a good amount of background
noise. I am thinking I should maybe try one of these waterproof headsets you
can get to see if that wouldn't improve the quality of the watch experience
because I regularly find myself saying not very nice things to my watch and
Apple for making it so difficult.
I am pretty sure a sighted person can tap the screen or press the digital crown
or side button when the watch is in waterlock and they can see all the
information about their workout so it's annoying that as a Voiceover user that
information is not accessible, why can't it be set up so that pressing the
digital crown and/or side button wouuld tell Voiceover it should read the
important workout data such as time and how many length I have done etc. I
understand the Apple Watch 8 Ultimate or whatever it is called is quite a bit
louder so that might be helpful in this setting, but I'd be really interested
to hear from others who regularly use their Apple Watch for swimming workouts
if they found any work-arounds for that problems I am describing. because

Hey all,

I've been using my apple watch Series 3 for a very long time. Should I upgrade
to a newer model? Is there much point? I figured the speed increases would be
worth it, but are the other features like blood oxygen measurements etc useful?
I also had a question regarding the new zones feature on watch OS 9. Are you
able to customize the feature, so you get audible or haptic alerts when your
active zone changes? That'll help blind people a ton since we'll get that
information in realtime.
thanks!

you get audible or haptic alerts when your active zone changes? That'll
help blind people a ton since we'll get that information in realtime.
thanks!

I am using iPhone SE and already using latest update of version 11. I
didn't face any issue, in fact my SE is working fine with voice over,
seeri is working perfectly, there is no issue in notification, and I
didn't have to setup my phone from the scretch, yes I do accept, the
battery drain is rapid in comparison to erlier version.

Re: should i upgrade to ios11

2017-10-03 Thread dacia . luck
I am not sure yet if I will upgrade or not or if I will wait. When I tried the
check to see what apps need to be updated to iOS 11, nothing happened when I
tapped on apps after I went into settings, general, and about. Any suggestions?

Hello, sounds good, but the way I use my devices, iPhone 6s in particular, the
bugs present I can deal with. But then again, I have a high tolerance for bugs.
So I am one for upgrading for sure.

Help is on the way for everyone who's experiencing these different bugs.
I know that beta discussions aren't permitted here on the list, but I

be ready for public release soon. You all will be quite pleased. I'm
mainly posting this for those who are still on IOS 10.3.3 and aren't

Likely you are correct about these apps ever being upgraded.  I looked
in settings a couple of weeks ago and there were 4 or 5 apps now only
2 apps not compatible with IOS11.

SayColor and INote
Many newer apps help with colors and I don't believe I use INote much.

Try searching for other equal apps that are 64 bit.

which didn't get updated to 64 Bit, if you don't upgrade because you are
holding on to some old 32 bit app which hasn't been updated in years then
you are just postponing the inevitable. But I completely agree that if you
don't do well with putting up with a few bugs and work-arounds and prefer
bugs you are used to to new ones then it's better to wait, after all, it's
not like iOS 10 is bug-free.

Likely you are correct about these apps ever being upgraded. I looked in
settings a couple of weeks ago and there were 4 or 5 apps now only 2 apps
not compatible with IOS11.

SayColor and INote
Many newer apps help with colors and I don't believe I use INote much.

That's not a negative reason for me not to update. If these apps are not

Try searching for other equal apps that are 64 bit.

Jed,

Depends on you. If you are not ready to deal with the bugs, its your choice.
If you are the type of person who wants things to work correctly, wait.
Accessibility bugs don't usually get solved until the .1 version because they
are not top on their list. If you don't like to mess with work arounds, you
should wait for 11.1 which is not what came out yesterday. That was 11.0.1
Chances are they will end up going to 11.0.1 and 11.0.2 and 11.0.3 before they
get to 11.1

make me think of when all those issues were going on with 8. The
battery drain is my biggest one. I refuse to upgrade phones until that

11.01 and she has got serious battery drain effect.
One Belgian and a Dutch chap updated their 5s and were nolonger able to
start voiceover. In fact vo was running but speech did not come up even not
with a hard reset and toggling. They really had to set their phones back to
factory settings starting from 0 to get their voices back.
I heard of some people calling Apple they were told not to update with
voiceover but if you do, configure your phone as a brand new iphone and
start from scratch. In that case people are reporting less bugs or
slugishness but this is eventually not true knowing about friends that
bought fresh new iphones with the use of voiceover.
Long live ios10 but I am glad for those that updated and don't care for the
bugs, I DO!

Hi Ann

That's not a negative reason for me not to update. If these apps are not
compatible yet you have to fear they won't ever be compatible.

Try searching for other equal apps that are 64 bit.

go to Settings then general then about then applications double tap

My advice: wait till a voiceover fix comes out.

Subject: should i upgrade to ios11

Hey guys,

OK, i know there has been a ton of discussion on here. It's kind of
overwelming to an extent. The big question. I've been running IOS10.
Should i do the upgrade or hold off for a bit? It seems like over-all
it's working well but a few new little things to get use to. Any
thoughts?
