RE: An audio demo of the process and unprocessed microphone in the iPhone 5

2013-03-04 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi Bob, and thanks for this. I have the Zoom h2n recorder and I'm guessing
it is the same microphone that is on the unit. It sounds like, however, it
would be more easily adjusted than the h2n. Very interesting to see if other
recorders will follow this. There may come a time when companies no longer
make physical recorders. I find that unlikely, but things do change, and we
will have to wait and see.

Thanks again for the link.

Hi, the link below is to a very short demo of the totally different way the
microphone on the iPhone 5 can sound when you take away apple's processing.
I don't know other apps that do this, but Fire 2 definitely does. You have
the way to control the volume, compression, limiter and other audio
features. There is a setting in the app that allows you to completely turn
off the microphone processing done by apple.

First I use List Recorder to record the actual sound of the microphone with
all of apple's audio processing turned on, which is the only way most apps
can do it.

Next, there is a recording made in Fire 2 with the processing turned off.

Enjoy.

Gesture alternatives for certain voice commands

We’ve designed Earl so that every single function can be controlled using
the double tap gesture followed by one of Earl’s voice commands.

For users who are comfortable using gestures, we have also built in some
gesture controls that can be used instead of voice commands for certain

navigation in Earl when used in conjunction with our voice commands.

Okay, I went to the app store to look for an app
that would help me count or figure out carbs for
the foods that I eat. I found a few. Here’s the
thing…I downloaded a couple of the free ones and
neither of them were VO accessible. I’m so
hesitant to pay money for an app, just to find out that it too is not

accessible to me. Is there a way to find this out before I purchase an app?

Hi,

Updates should definitely not be blank although if you have Genius for Apps
enabled in Settings, |Privacy, Location Services and System, the app store
can take a fairly long time to load. I would just go into the app store,
make sure the update tab is selected and let it sit for a while, if the
screen wants to lock, touch something so it doesn't.

Facebook app on iPhone 4 s

2013-03-04 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I was using the iphone keyboard to type a message for posting on the native
facebook app. I noticed that with every keystroke, the phone made a sound like
it makes when you swipe up or down and nothing happens. I do not know the
reason for this sound as I am in the edit field entering text. I have the
latest update to the operating system and to facebook itself.

2013-03-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello. My experience with ATT is completely the opposite. I suggested that you
call them back and get someone else. Just like any large company, there will
always be some service representatives who are not well-trained or are too lazy
to do their work. This does not mean the entire company at-large is to blame. I
could easily give you equal stories regarding Verizon and Sprint, but again it
does not mean they are bad companies in general. Just so you know, once your
phone is off contract, ATT can unlock your phone. Unless there has been a new
law to change it, then they can do it. Also, there is no need to unlock your
phone unless you're planning to sell it or want to switch carriers to someone
else.

For users who are comfortable using gestures, we have also built in some
gesture controls that can be used instead of voice commands for certain

RE: Canadian Weather app, was: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-04 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for the tip. This is the best weather app for Canadians. I will now
recommend it to all my friends. It is completely VO accessible and I love
the idea of being able to put the feels like temperature on the badge rather
than the real temperature especially during the winter when I check the
temperature to decide what I need to wear
For instance, right now, its minus 4 in Montreal but the feels like
temperature is minus 10. That is a big difference as to which jacket and
gloves you need to wear. In the cold months, its nice to know ahead of time
if my dog will need to wear his boots or can he do without.

I also appreciate being able to re-order the display so I can put on top the
things I really want to know and move the least interesting things down
lower on the screen.

Hi Ron,

I am replying to the thread about accessible apps, but I changed the subject
to reflect that this has been about weather apps for the last few messages.

Since you are in Canada I would recommend the app called Degrees from the
developer North Bits. I think it's a Dollar or 2, but it uses Environment
Canada information and the current conditions as well as the forecast are
presented nicely and Voiceover reads everything well including sun rise, sun
set, the current moon phase and the previous day's high and low temperature.

You can add one or more locations that you want to check and make one of
them your default and I like the fact that you can display the current
temperature right on the badge icon. Due to limitations set by Apple,
Voiceover reads it as new items and it cannot announce negative
temperatures, but unless it's around 0 where a 1 or 2 could be either
plus or minus, it's usually pretty obvious whether it's above or below 0.
So, for example, right now it's minus 7 Celsius here (you can, of course,
set the units to either metric or imperial) and if I check the app icon,
Voiceover says the following:

Degrees, 7 new items

If you have any questions feel free to ask. If you want to take a look at
the information, you can check out the following Environment Canada website,
it's to the weather for Smithers, where I live, and the information
presented in the app is very much the same:

http://text.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forecast/city_e.html?bc-82

Use 1 3 times to jump to the third heading level 1 which is Smithers and
then you can use the arrows to read the information. It gives the location
and time of the reading, then current conditions, 7-day forecast and then
Historical Data.
The website also has a link called Record Values which gives you the
record high and low temperatures and some more information which can be
interesting to know for the day. For example, if I check this for my town, I
learn the following:

Averages and Extremes for: March 4, 2013
Summary: This table displays the average and extreme values for the
observing station.

Average Maximum Temperature: 2.8°C
Average Minimum Temperature: -6.8°C
Frequency of Precipitation: 36.0%
Highest Temperature (1943 - 2012): 10.0°C in 1949 Lowest Temperature (1943 -
2012): -30.6°C in 1955 Greatest Precipitation (1943 - 2012): 6.6mm in 1968
Greatest Rainfall (1943 - 2012): 6.6mm in 1968 Greatest Snowfall (1943 -
2012): 5.2cm in 2002 Most Snow on the Ground (1955 - 2012): 81.0cm in 1972

Hi,

In that case, I may have the right app. I thought I had the wrong one
because its not accessible and I was told it was. I guess yu could slide
your finger down to the row of days and then slide down to the temperature
but if you don't slide down perfectly straight, there is no way to find out
if you are on the right temperature for that day. It only gives the maximum
and not the minimum.

Not absolutely sure but, if I have the right app, its not even worth the
dollar to me. I'm waiting for an answer on the name of the developer to see

enough to know there are graphics that show what it is going to be like each

Grant and All, thanks very much for your feedback.

Let me mention two things.

. Firstly, if you find that VO misses numbers, you may need to turn the
rotor a bit slower. There is a delay between when you hear the sound for
each number and when VO actually speaks it.

. Secondly, If VO's focus moves to the two buttons at the top of the screen
the rotor functionality will switch back to its usual features. This is what
is supposed to happen. If this does happen, simply touch the screen again
near the middle, with a finger and you'll be good to go!

Are you having any issue hearing the sound which signals you to flick up or
down on the correct number? The AppleVis podcaster was having an issue but I
was able to hear it fine. So I'm wondering if this is something we'll need
to change in the next update so people can more easily hear this sound?
-Thoughts?

Thanks to everyone so far for your awesome and helpful feedback! You rock!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Hi Cara,

What a terrific idea! I am certain this will benefit a lot of new users of
VoiceOver. I had a play with it and mostly it is fun and easy to get the
hang of. I will say though that the second, combination lock game seems
quite buggy at least on my particular iPhone 5.
VoiceOver rarely announced the numbers as I spun the lock, but usually a
small sound played indicating that my gesture worked. Often times though,
VoiceOver simply loses its focus and when I spin the dial it begins turning
the rotor from lines to words etc. as it would normally do when not in an an
app with custom gestures. The result is I have not been able as of yet to
win the second game, and I am an experienced VoiceOver year of three years.

Cheers,

Hello. My experience with ATT is completely the opposite. I suggested that
you call them back and get someone else. Just like any large company, there
will always be some service representatives who are not well-trained or are
too lazy to do their work. This does not mean the entire company at-large is
to blame. I could easily give you equal stories regarding Verizon and Sprint,
but again it does not mean they are bad companies in general. Just so you
know, once your phone is off contract, ATT can unlock your phone. Unless
there has been a new law to change it, then they can do it. Also, there is no
need to unlock your phone unless you're planning to sell it or want to switch
 carriers to someone else.

Re: Fire 2?

2013-03-04 Thread Esther
Hi DJ, Richard, and Others,

The app is FiRe 2 - Field Recorder ($5.99) by Audiofile Engineering:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fire-2-field-recorder/id436241643?mt=8

The name comes from the two initial letters of the words, Field
Recorder, since the original FiRe app (spelled capital F, small
letter i, capital R, small letter e) was the first professional
grade recorder for the iPhone for recording gigs in the field.

The editing functions and additional customization for sampling rates
were added in version two of the app, which I haven't tried to use yet
with VoiceOver. They also allowed you to record mono tracks, and
provided various equalizer settings to boost male or female voice
recordings, or optimize for specifc settings, like lecture recordings
or concerts. The sort of features that were accessible in version 1 of
FiRe that you didn't find in other such apps were precise marker
placement and navigation by these markers within tracks.

One warning for something not to try with VoiceOver: do not attempt to
get and use the Røde microphone apps, because these will kill
VoiceOver. In the original release of FiRe, there was a separate,
free version of the FiRe app that was released for the Blue Microphone
product called Blue FiRe. Blue FiRe and the first version of FiRe are
long since gone from the app store, but the Blue FiRe app was a useful
free version of FiRe to learn on. It didn't have all the
accessibility features of FiRe for marker placement, but it had an
introductory recording explaining how the app was used, and included a
lot of the basic recording features of FiRe. If you had an iPhone 3GS
or early generation iPod Touch, you could use it to record.

While I was reading about Audiofile Engineering's recent iPhone
microphone support, I came across references to the Røde iXY
microphone for the iPhone 4S and older iPad models. This is billed as
a 24-bit/96kHz-capable recording device that demoed at the Consumer
Electronic Show and started shipping last month. It also was supposed
to have a special version of the FiRe 2 app to use for recording (same
price of $5.99 for the app), and a free recording app named RØDE Rec
LE, both by RØDE Microphones. I'll just say that if you load the
RØDE Rec LE app and launch it, your VoiceOver volume will get set to
0 with no way of getting the volume back unless you can kill the app,
or reset your iPhone. You can kill the app in the app switcher if you
perform all the VoiceOver gestures without sound feedback, and VO will
come back. Or if you have the regular FiRe 2 app in your app switcher
and can switch to that, you can also get sound back. Just don't even
bother to try the RØDE Microphones apps if you use VoiceOver without
vision. They won't be of any use.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: LookTel VO Tutorial

2013-03-04 Thread Cara Quinn
Ron, thank you.

We'll be changing the sound to make it easier to hear. Sorry for the
inconvenience.

I'm wondering, are their folks who are able to hear this tone?

Just as an FYI, the tone is mixed in with the click of the number and is the
sound of a coin flip. So it is very high pitched and sort of sounds like a
little bell.

Just curious who is able to hear this? Perhaps writing me off-list might be
better so as not to create more traffic on the list for this particular
question.

Thanks so much to All!

Sent from my iPhone

Well, since I haven't seen this one chatted about here on the list, here goes…

LookTel has just released, this week, a free app called Voiceover Tutorial.
 (VO Tutorial)

It is a basic tutorial app for new iPhone / iPod users (soon to be on iPad)
which teaches all of the necessary gestures so a user can then more easily
navigate / investigate their device by themselves.

The app also has two games in it. Basketball and Safe.

Basketball allows the player to dribble the ball by flicking down and
shooting by flicking up. The more you dribble the ball, the more likely you
are to make a basket. This is meant to show the player the flick up / down
 gestures.

This then leads to the Safe game, where the player places two fingers on the
screen and turns their hand as if to turn a large knob. Voiceover announces
numbers as the Safe's virtual dial turns and a sound is played at a
particular number. The player then needs to flick up or down to enter that
 number into the combination lock.

Once you enter three numbers successfully, the Safe opens.

So, as you might guess, this teaches the rotor gesture… :)

Rather than only being for beginning iOS users, all iPhone / iPod users might
like this app just to have the games on their devices as quick lil' time
 wasters. :)

We'll be updating this app extensively, and I've already got another game
written to add. We'll eventually cover all Voiceover gestures and will have a
directory-like system so a customer can immediately go straight to a lesson
 or game of their choice.

 Enjoy! Here's the linkie!

   Hi:
This is a most creative tutorial. I am glad to see this approach.

I am an instructor and will be using this as a way to make people comfortable
with voiceOver's gestures.

One comment: The first time you present the split tap feature, you may want to
exclude the double tap feature so that the student needs to use the gesture
you are trying to have them use.

Re: Fire 2?

2013-03-04 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
FiRe 2 sounds like a neat app; I just might have to buy it. I'm curious
about something, though. What kind of microphone is in the iPhone 4?

I play in a classic rock band and would like to record our gigs. Is there an
interface to the iPhone that would let me hook up a couple of good PZM
microphones with 1/4-inch jacks?

We use pretty heavy firepower on stage, Marshalls, Mesa Boogie amps and the
like and we generally crank them up. So I'm looking for a very small
recording tool that will give me clean stereo recordings at high db levels.
The PZM microphones that I have will cut the db level back considerably, and
that combination of mikes, whatever interface I'd need plus equalization
and other features of FiRe 2 might just be the ticket. Any thoughts?

skip over numbers even though I'm trying to go slow enough to not miss the bell
sound.

 Cara :)

 Hi cara,

I don't hear the sound telling me to flick up. I basically had to turn to
each number in turn and flick up to hear the bell if it was correct.
In case it might help you, I'm using an IPhone 4 with the very latest IOS.

 Subject: Re: LookTel VO Tutorial

 :)

 Cheers,

 Grant

 Hello all,
I was using the iphone keyboard to type a message for posting on the native

the reason for this sound as I am in the edit field entering text. I have the
latest update to the operating system and to facebook itself.
 Can anyone help?

Hi,
Are you still full version. I bought it over 12 months ago. I think the light
version limits you to 3 or four points of interest.
