Have you searched the SuSE knowledge base?

Suse 9.0 comes with (quoting rpm -qa | grep -i vnc) :

kdenetwork3-vnc-3.1.4-27(KDE 'shared' desktop)

XFree86-Xvnc-4.3.0.1-21

tightvnc-1.2.9-44

It sounds like you've got a little miscegenation of the packages. Beerse is
correct uninstall/reinstall until the package list matches the above.

repeat: VNC authentication failed

Server vnc-server-4.0.0-beta4.3 Fedora core

Viewer Win32 3.3.7 XP Pro
Viewer vnc-3.3.3r2-47RH 9
Viewer vnc-4.0-0.beta4.3 Suse 9.0

Using xinetd, with identical /etc/services entries and
/etc/xinetd.d/vncserver file entries as RH 9, all attempts to connect to the
Fedora box fail with the authentication error. (Changed the usual Xaccess,
gdmconfig, xdm-config, and etc.)

/etc/vncserver:

##
service vnc-800x600x24
{
  protocol = tcp
  socket_type = stream
  wait = no
  user = nobody
  server = /usr/bin/Xvnc
server_args = -inetd -query localhost -once -geometry
800x600 -depth 24
}

Even attempts to localhost fail.

CConnection : using RFB protocol version 3.7

I have run vncpasswd to (re)set the password. I can connect to the box by
manually starting a server (and using the same password.)

All the other systems are playing well together(all are on the good side of
the firewall) Is there something new I need to setup for this VNC version?

Another odd indication in the system log:

Xinetd(pid): warning: cant get client address. Transport endpoint is not
connected

Thanks

Dual (multiple) monitors

2004-03-11 Thread p putkowski
In XP (or ME or 98SE), monitors are attached via separate (or multihead)
video cards. Same in SuSe 9, except the driver support is the responsibility
of the card vendor, not SuSe.

ME and 98SE support TWO monitors. Each monitor (typically) can have its own
resolution and depth. One card must be IGP. The other card must be PCI. The
primary desktop is IGP.

XP supports up to TEN cards/monitor segments. Each monitor (typically) can
have its own resolution and depth, depending on whether your multihead card
driver supports different resolution and depth on its own attached
monitors. With XP, the primary desktop can be set in properties (if you
believe the checkbox Id rather not try.)

IMHO, the best VNC option would recognize the SOURCE )server( number of
cards/monitors and would allow them mapped to the TARGET )viewer( monitor or
monitors

More easily, perhaps, VNC would recognize the SOURCE )server( has multiple
monitors and allow which was to be grabbed. Then a separate viewer(s)
could map the other monitors.

As more Linux versions support multiple monitors, we can only hope that
EVERYONE will recognize how WONDERFUL it is to put all or part of a
coding/development environment on one monitor and view the results either in
a window or totally occupying another monitor. The end of clutter think of
it.

For REAL: Netbeans supports moving panels to a separate display and
remembers where they were in the workspace. (In XP.) Eclipse is crippled in
this respect.

MORE DANGEROUS: .NET fully recognizes and uses multiple monitors.

I am devoted to multiple monitors. If you own a modern laptop, it probably
has a dual head card that supports two independent displays in Windows
ME/XP.

new to vnc and need help

2003-12-17 Thread p putkowski
Mark,

You may need to configure you WESTELL modems NAT forwarding. My Wirespeed
(A)DSL modem is from BellSouth, so the menus are custom, but I have to enter
expert mode and then Configure/NAT. VNC is in the pulldown; when you
enable it, the modem will ask which device (on the local net) you want the
traffic forwarded-to.

The modems automatically bit-bucket any unsolicited inbound traffic

Hope this helps.

Subject: New to VNC and need help...
Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 15:07:54 -0600

Hi all,

Of course I need help, why would I be writing otherwise, huh?

Let me explain my situation:

I've been away from networking for some time now- last server I worked on
was a WinNT and now, I've been sortof thrown into a project with Server
2003.

I'm using Server 2003 with 2 locations- across town from each other. Both
locations have a DSL connection and a static IP address at each. Both are
using little 5 port D-Link routers (They are I-601 models, I believe). I
also have VNC set up at my home and am using this to test the other two
connections.

With the two stores, I can VNC out, but not in. At my home, I can VNC either
in or out... So, I can see other desktops, but others can not VNC into the
machine at either store that's set up for the connection. I keep getting a
"Server can not be found" error message.

Now, to me, the problem seems to be centered around a firewall issue with
Server 2003 (Forgot to mention that we took the router out and went directly
from the Westell modem to the server... Same thing is happening, so I am
assuming that it's a server issue).

So, my question to all of you nice, smart people out in VNC land is this: on
Server 2003, what am I overlooking in the firewall that could hinder an IP
connection for the VNC from the outside world?

Thank you one and all for your feedback.

Cordially,

Mark Lent

No Hub LAN 127.0.0.1

2003-11-30 Thread p putkowski
Tried to set up WinXP & Win98 PC on LAN WITHOUT router. Used
peer-to-peer(?) connection with crossover Enet cable. (Note: this is an
Ethernet LAN, not Direct Cable Connection). Couldn't find the IP address
to use.
Hover gives 127.0.0.1 on both machines. Can't find IP address info in
WinXP or Win98 Control Panel / Network setup or My Computer / Properties.

Any Ideas?

Peter,

Your Cable modem (or the router) is probably running a DHCP server which
assigns your machines IP addresses at boot time. Naturally, this is not
present in the crossover cable.

Check your TCP/IP settings to validate that DHCP is enabled. In XP, right
click the LAN connection/properties, then TCP/IP properties/advanced. In
98/ME, right click network neighborhood/properties, select the TCP/IP for
your network card and look at the IP address and WINS tabs.

chasing dynamic modem IP addresses

2003-11-07 Thread p putkowski
Heres my plan (in java) :

A program runs at interval of x minutes on one of the local machines.

This program uses the local address and .htm page of the modem to read the
web page that contains the IP and DNS addresses of the current condition
of the modem.

Each line that comes back from the modem that contains an IP address is
stored in an array.

At the end of the web page, the program compares these values sequentially
to the values stored by the previous run (in a file.)

If any value has changed (or if the comparison file does not exist, as in
the first run,) the program formats and sends an email containing the new
IP addresses.

The program re-writes the file containing the current status.

Parameters required by the program:

X minutes interval to run (could be run daily from WIN scheduler.)

HTTP - address of the modem page containing the current status (
http://192.168.0.111/homeBS.htm is mine)

EMAIL address to send the notification.

NET identifies the network (to be included in the notification.)

SMTP mailserver name

USER mailserver user name

PASSWORD mailserver password

Any suggestions?
