RE: Java Viewer Applet
Hi I am looking for more control on the Java Viewer. For example, I can control using parameters if the buttons on top of the Java Viewer should be displayed or not. I can also control on the refresh rate, read only mode, password, etc... I have done this successfully with the Java Viewer of Tight VNC. Now I want to use the Java Viewer of Real VNC. The problem is that I can't find the jar file and the class file nor the list of parameters to control. Does anybody have any suggestions for Real VNC? RE: Java Viewer
Hi Bill, Make sure your browser is upto date with Virtual Machine and Java updates for your browser. An old version of those can upset things. I am in a Windows 95/98/XP environment so can only speak re those. I use IE5.5 for WIN95 (can only use upto that version on WIN95 IE6 won't load) and IE6 for WIN98 onwards. I had had a lot of problems if my Java and Virtual Machine modules were not the latest. Maybe this helps. I can use vnc viewer to do this, but I've had no luck using the java viewer. I am trying name:5800 in the browser. Anyone had any success with this? Should I use real VNC instead of tightVNC? Some things to do or to think about. It is about showing something. THen the best thing is to have a vnc-session in the middle. That is default on linux/unix so no problem. See my attached message for how to setup one static vnc-server that compares the best to the console session. Now you can both have a vncviewer pointing to the same session. This must work to have the java viewer working. If you want a java-viewer pointing there, just add the options to the Xvnc command: -httpd /path/to/vnc/classes -httpport 5804 REplace /path/to/vnc/classes with the absolute path to your .../vnc/classes/. directory (the one containing *.vnc and some java files) and the 5804 with your desired portnumber. btw: there are other options to see the linux console session in a vnc-viewer. See their setup for their variants to the -http... options. It is jet an other way to create an always running vnc session on unix/linux. It is based on RedHat 9 but I think it can easy be moved to every unix that has a Xvnc binary. My goal was to create a linux server that has a text console (for RedHat: as if running in runlevel 3) but still has gdm available (actually running runlevel 5). Roughly, I just replaced the Xserver (XFree86 on linux) with Xvnc. I first installed the vncserver packages from the distribution and start `vncserver` at least once to have a vnc password file. Then (sidestep) I installed http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp. I don't expect it is needed but for me it is the reason to run in runlevel 5 and not in runlevel 3. The real work is in getting Xvnc used as an Xterminal that runs on the same host. For GNOME (gdm) users:

A friend is using the linux machine locally and I would like to show them how to do something. I am on an arbitrary pc somewhere on the network which may or may not have VNC veiwer installed, and may be any OS. So I want to use the java viewer in a browser to access the :0 desktop so that my friend can see what I am doing on their local screen and so learn how to do whatever it is next time. I can use vnc viewer to do this, but I've had no luck using the java viewer. I am trying name:5800 in the browser. Anyone had any success with this? With the unix/linux implementation you can find the html files in the ...vnc/classes/ directory, they have the extention '*.vnc'. THere is reasonable comment on what to adapt and what variables to use for update by the vncserver-webserver. With the M$Windows implementation, I think they are generated on the fly, you'll find details in the source. However, you don't need to twiggle the source and rebuild vncserver if you have an other webserver on the same machine. If you want to use custom html files, best to take a unix implementation and extract the ...vnc/classes/ directory. There you'll find the java-viewer and the html examples. Update the *.vnc files to *.html files, feed them to your webserver (that must be running on the same machine as the vncserver) and optionally disable the html-webserver from the vncserver. Re: Java Viewer only working by host name
I am not sure how to fix your problem, but the seb_laptop is not a hostname if it has an underscore, it must be a machine name. The difference would be that you are not using DNS or the hosts file to resolve it, you are using WINS, LMHOSTS, Netbios broadcasts or some other windows mechanism. When you use the IP address you are relying solely on the TCP/IP protocol and it must be set up correctly. You could try using this line in the host file on the client: 192.168.0.123 192.168.0.123 Some applications will try a DNS lookup if there is no entry in the hosts file which will take too long and time out before connecting. If, this doesn't work check all the TCP/IP settings to be sure they are correct. Hope this helps. Joe Kexel [EMAIL PROTECTED] : VNC the greatest tool on Earth! RE: Java Viewer SSH port forwarding configuration
Gateway has iptables with the following relevant rules: /sbin/iptables -A tcpin -p tcp --dport 5980 -j ACCEPT /sbin/iptables -A tcpin -p tcp --dport 5880 -j ACCEPT If you are using SSH tunneling you don't need these ports open. These are the ports that SSH opens up from the server on to the Gateway for VNC Viewers to connect to. I think I need the ports open through the gateway for viewers to connect to my gateway because they (the viewers)are not using SSH tunneling, only the servers are. The reason I use the gateway is that the VNC servers might be behind a NAT/Masqueraded firewall for example and not reachable from the public net. So the Gateway will be a proxy VNC server at a well known IP address:Display. This is the diagram: Arbitrary VNC Server === SSH Gateway public net --Arbitrary VNC Viewer (localhost:5880/5980) 22/ssh 22/ssh (5980/5880) (using GateWayIP:80) If I had another person who wanted to serve I would have him use SSH to the gateway and open say 5990/5890. His counterpart viewer would useGateWayIP:90. I'm not sure I follow you here. Just using SSL on the https port will not encrypt the VNC traffic from the Java viewer to the gateway, just the delivery of the applet. Duh = Brain lock :-) I'm still trying to think of a dead simple way to get an encrypted screen view using a browser . The VNC position of building on, not building in, security, while elegant technically, is working against me for new user comfort level, on a shoestring budget (manhours and $$$). The viewers have to install the security if it is not in the browser/applet. So I kind of glommed on to SSL before realizing (in the morning!)that the applet had nothing to do with the browser connection ;-( So far I'm thinking it's one of: (1) Don't worry about encryption nobody will bother (2) Put the MindTerm SSH application on the gateway and have viewers connect via ssh applet using a guest account (:-() then connect to the VNC server if they are concerned about encryption. (License issues?) (3) I suppose I could hack the applet but that's not in the guerilla budget ;-( Regards, Michael ___ VNC-List mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list
