From the later videos he does seem to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic. (waffle in an understatement) But that seems to be largely age related. I think he has probably got or more likely had something but I don't think the effect is reliable as indeed most Free Energy (weather electrical or cold fusion seldom is), also he likely has little understanding of some of the basics of Physics (which helps when doing the impossible) but is likely being deceptive even if to himself most of all. I probably give more FE/AG devices the benefit of the doubt than most posting to this list but his demos seem really poor. (If it wasn't for somewhat similar principles working elsewhere including JLN's replication of Newman and as reported confirmations from scientists testing it I would be calling him an all out scam) He's just chasing ghosts... I do question his sanity, and his veracity. For one thing he announced that he is the Messiah. This was after he ran for President and filed a Writ of Mandamus (alleging prejudice) against a federal judge. Then there is the matter of the second and third Mrs. Newman, who are mother and daughter. When he brought his dog and pony show to the Tesla Society meeting my friend approached the stage with a digital VOM, Joseph was not pleased. OTOH, his machine did impress Roger Hastings, PhD physics. I think that he is producing excess energy, the magnetic cooling is proof of that. His life story would make one hell of a movie, even better than the Paul Brown Story. It is difficult to judge. Some people are unable to learn anything, and immune to rationality. Many hardcore opponents of cold fusion seem incredibly stupid to me, but I think they honestly believe what they say. A few are intellectually dishonest. One, Taubes, told someone (Ed Storms, I think it was) that he does not know or care whether his statements about cold fusion are true. I gather his purpose was to sell books. I heard Taubes interviewed on National People's Radio. Some one, I assume an LENR researcher, called in and asked him if he knew the definition of flack, Taubes replied that a flack is something put there to obscure the matter. The caller then replied, Taubes you are a flack. They cut him off of course, both the People's Radio and TV networks march to the beat of a hidden drummer. What they hope to gain by this mystifies me. Taubes is licking the hand that feeds him, which some people prefer to poverty. That is unethical, but it is more crazy than dishonest. My guess is that he sees himself as a writer of science fiction, or amusement, like these people who make television programs about haunted houses. Hey Jed, I love haunted house shows. The local CBS affiliate was running one where they took thermo imaging cameras in. It was great fun, I regret that they quit running that series. If you doubt the phenomena there are people who will take you to spots where you can feel the cold for yourself. For example, he claims the pump is running with a 10ft head, using this as an argument that it is doing work. In reality the output hose does go up 10 ft, but then it goes down 10ft (it's just flung over a 10 ft ladder), so the pump runs with zero head in fact, it doesn't do any work against gravity. Newman rediscovered the metaphysics of the siphon: Gravity can work for you, instead of you always working against gravity. This brings up the economic issue of charging for joules (energy) which I mentioned before. e.g. What gives an hydro electric company the right to forever charge for joule consumption? It is not as if the company is forever hauling water uphill. At some point the system they have built is producing more energy then was required for its construction. When that point is reached the company should only be able to charge for the energy required to maintain the facility and give away the rest for free. Harry

They had superb knowledge of physics and engineering, and they filled their notebooks with page after page advanced mathematics equations and simulations that a modern-day graduate student would struggle to recreate on personal computer. Newman depends entirely on intuition. The Wrights were somewhat intuitive, but mainly analytical. They had various other sterling qualities, such as the fact that they were superb craftsmen, and they built equipment and prototypes with amazing speed. They build gliders, airplanes, and motors far more quickly than groups of the people who tried to replicate them for the 2003 commemorative flights were able to do it! - Jed
