File Sharing Problem

2002-05-02 Thread Brett Bygrave
Hi All

I am having huge problems with file sharing on a G4 500DP, running OS 9.2.2,
512MB RAM, 40GB HD, partitioned into 3 drives...10GB System drive, 10GB,
20GB.

After startup, but before file sharing starts up, the message ³The
application File Sharing has unexpectedly quit because an error 29 has
occurred² Soon after that, either the Finder ³unexpectedly quits² or
the machine freezes all together.

I have tried searching the archives to no avail, I have deleted file sharing
prefs, rebuilt the desktop on all 3 partitions, zapped the PRAM, increased
file sharing control panel¹s memory allocation.

I have officially run out of ideas, and it is one of 2 workstations we have
that are both desperately required. Any help, ideas, URL¹s, fixes, etc.
would be greatly appreciated.

2002-05-02 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi All!

Here is a curly question for you all. Is it possible that if a machine is
hooked into ADSL, it can be hacked and the drive initialised?

Yes.

We have a customer that is hooked into ADSL. He says that while he was
online, the machine crashed with a type 1 error. When he tried to reboot, a
flashing question mark appeared. He brought the machine into the store.
After booting off a Diskwarrior CD, we noticed that the drive had now been
called 'Untitled' and was empty.

Does this sound at all possible?

Yes, that's possible.

The leap from that to 'someone broke in and hacked my machine' is
somewhat nebulous though.

Installation Issues with indesign 2.0

2002-05-02 Thread mrsc
Hello All:

I am having a weird experience with installing Indesign 2.0 for OSX and I
am wondering if anyone has managed to accomplish this feat.

First, I am running 10.1.4 on a G4 T-powerbook. I am logged in as
administrator.

Usually, when you install something, the installer prompts you to enter in
your admin password before it launches into the install. This was the case
in Adobe and other products.

However with my copy of Indesign 2.0 (which is for OSX), it doesn't ask
me this--instead it goes about the business of installing just as it would
under OS9. Of course, during the install process I get an access denied
error message, and when i click OK it tells me I don't have permissions to
install this.

I have been on the phone with Apple and Adobe this morning, and neither
have a solution. We have tried the following work arounds (without
success):

1. Log in a root user. Believe it or not, when I do this and attempt to
install, the installer won't even run--claiming I need to be logged in as
administrator to have the right permissions to install the program
(!!??!!).

2. Create a new admin user, and try to install using their account. I had
the same errors.

3. Custom install of product (as opposed to easy install). Resulted in
same error.

4. Installing under OS9. Product installed, but then was unsuable due
to missing files when attempting to use the application in OSX.

5. Restart the computer. Wish it to work. Log back in. Resulted in same
error. (Not wishing hard enough?)

So I call out for suggestions, workarounds, comments? Particularly form
those who have this installed.

Apple and Adobe asked me to contact them tomorrow and report any progress
to them for their systems help.

Thanks in advance
Nathalie

Bigpond Cable and new Airport base Station

2002-05-02 Thread Rod Lavington

Hi All!

Nick wants to know if anyone has successfully installed a new Airport (Snow

Airports working, but the cable connection for some reason does not want to
play ball. Any ideas?

Airport 2
2 iMacs with Airport cards
1 Powerbook with Airport card

If one of the iMacs is used as a software base station, the connection works
fine. All machines can see each other fine in the network.

Maybe try deleting the invisible AppleShare PDS file on each of your

I suppose you have defragmented your hard disk using Norton's or similar?

Regards, Paul

Hi there

Yep. Disk Warrior, Nortons, TechTool Pro (very nice and thorough program)
all to no avail. I posted a message on the Apple Discussions page and
received this little bit of info. I will pass it on as so far it seems to be
working;

Hi, John -

Sluggishness - in OS 9.2.x, there is often an interference between the Apple
CD/DVD Driver extension and the Iomega Driver extension which causes that
problem. The test for this - insert a zip disk in the drive; if the
sluggishness disappears, you have this interference problem. Solutions -

If you never use the zip drive, disable the Iomega extension.

If you sometimes but rarely use it, just leave a zip disk in the drive.

Usual long-term solution - downgrade the Apple CD/DVD Driver extension to a
version earlier than 1.4.5, such as 1.4.4, 1.4.3, or 1.4. You can download
those here - http://homepage.mac.com/macdgm/ - at the bottom of the page.

Another possibility: if you've updated QuickTime in recent months, you
probably now have version 5.0.5; that version adds a new file, which can
cause that kind of problem. Look in the QuickTime Extensions folder (it's a
separate folder in the Extensions folder) - if you find a file there named
QuickTime JPEG Update, try removing it and restarting.

So I will wait a few days to see how it all pans out. Thanks again everyone
for all your help and suggestions. Wamug really is a great service and it is
nice to know there is this wealth of experience and willingness to help.

Jon

Hi All,

I actually have never had a problem with Random Access. I just have to ring
them up and they post out my stuff and I receive invoices later, if
something goes wrong they always compensate me and they are always willing
to discount me when I question their prices or I find it cheaper elsewhere.
They know I have a GMac Card and they always discount it by a further 10% or
more. Maybe they feel sorry for me because I am blonde and feel I need all
this stuff to keep myself occupied during the day. It does make you wonder
how it all works as I had to ring up for software today and Random was
actually $100.00 cheaper than another Apple store which shall remain

How to fake a monitor...

2002-05-02 Thread Paul J. Willemse

Hello all,

I have just acquired a G4 and want to use an external monitor only.
However, the
G4 will only start if there us a monitor plugged into the build-in
card. Even if that monitor is not turned on, it will work fine.

I recall reading somewhere that you can jumper some of the pins on
the DB-15 connector to fool the machine into thinking there is a
monitor present.

I don't want to have an ancient, low res monitor sitting there just
so I can use my nice Silicon Graphics solid state screen, so any
ideas where i might find that info will be greatly appreciated.

Primus v Telstra ADSL

2002-05-02 Thread Steven
I'd be grateful for anyone's thoughts/experiences on any significant
differences between Primus Telstra's ADSL service please.

I'm currently a Primus dial up user, thinking of upgrading to ADSL. Don't
really have a problem with Primus unless I have to contact them - they don't
respond to email inquiries, and phoning them means at least a half hour
wait. I've sent off about 3 email requests for someone to contact me about
ADSL sign-up, and made one phone call, all over the past 6 months or so -
I'm still waiting.

Does the ADSL software chew up much additional RAM? I'm using an iMac
Special Edition with 128Mb of RAM, and will probably upgrade to a new iMac
when Apple release the next round of updated models.

Telstra's ADSL plans seem to be a bit cheaper if you pre-select them, a bit
more expensive than Primus if you don't. I'm contemplating the 512/128 1Gb
plan (Telstra or Primus), or the 1.5Mb/256kb 1Gb plan with Primus (Telstra
only provide the 1.5Mb/256kb speed starting at 5Mb download limit and $240pm
- don't want to pay that much).

Is price the only measure to consider?

Are there any other (better) ADSL providers out there? I'm in Brisbane for
now.

Thanks...Steven

Re: PowerBook G4 Update.. is now official

Hi WAMUGGERS, Mark,
I've been doing a bit of work on these sorts of units for some primary
school music teachers and there are a lot of options in these external
USB AD/DA interfaces. These are needed as the teachers have laptops not
desktops. The ones we want need to have both MIDI and audio connectivity
both hi and lo Z inputs and some aux input and connectivity to USB. The
upshot is that the tascam, yamaha, roland edirol ua3 (and others),
midiman , m-audio quattro, aardvark, digidesign mbox (recently featured
on Apple's website!) all do the job. One big difference is the quality
of the software for sequencing/recording and then mixing down to audio.
Some come with nothing and don't work with much either (not even
Steinberg Cubase VST or EMagic Logic Audio - go figure). The Tascam units
come with Cubasis that does 8 audio tracks and 48 midi and seems a good
value - this is $200 software. I like the US-428 unit with 8 sliders that
link directly to software mixers and let you have 16 banks of 8 slides -
with presets and DSP built-in - sweet! It's the one I'd buy - but it
isn't cheap.

http://www.tascam.com/products/us428/index.php
http://www.tascam.com/products/computer_recording/us224/index.php

These are great for small mixing/recording needs and ideal for beginners
getting into recording.

Creative have a great but PC-only softwarewise (at this time) unit called
the Extigy which is good for the home hobbyist who wants it all - a bit
of recording, amplification, surround-sound for gaming etc.
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/

I'd love to get my hands on one of these and see how well it works with
macs - it's far cheaper than many alternatives and has some unique
features.
