Re: Can't turn off auto dialup

Two things I can think of to try.

1. Turn off connect automatically as suggested by Phil
2. A mod to Glen's suggestion - don't turn scheduling off in Entourage,
just check the "only if connected" box in the schedules section.
3. Most weirdly, make sure the USB Print Sharing extension is disabled.
Search the archives for more info on this.

Try disabling the scheduling in Entourage... This will stop it trying to
use the dailup to connect to the internet (which it can not find).

Re: Can't turn off auto dialup

2003-02-19 Thread Phillip McGree
Hiya Denise,

It's not the Remote Access Redialling that's the problem. The redialing is set
to on so that if you connect to the ISP and all the lines are engaged, the Mac
keeps on trying until it gets a vacant line.

You need to go to:

Remote Access...Options the Protocol tab at the top unclick the
"Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications".

Close it all and save.

Hope the move to Perth went well!

Rgds,
Phil

Networking problem

2003-02-19 Thread faj
Years ago I purchased what I was assured was a long (10 meters)
crossover ethernet cable but it was blue!! I could never get it to
work.
I recently purchased a short red crossover cable & I have been able
to network my two computers (B&W G3 & Wallstreet Powerbook).
Because of the distance between the two computers under normal
working conditions I foolishly removed the red & inserted the blue
cable for the extra length. This didn't work! so I replaced the blue
with the red cable but since then I cannot get either computer to
recognise the other in the chooser even though all preferences
remained the same.

I have thrown away the File sharing preferences & the AppleTalk is
set on ethernet.
Have I caused any damage by using the blue (presumably a twisted
cable not crossover)

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be or do I need to reinstall anything
Help would be appreciated
Thanks
Faye

Desktop Applications will let you have a play with one (although they generally
stock the larger size intuos range from memory), otherwise talk to Mike or Tim
at Artref. They'll set one up on a box and you can muck about.

Thanks for that Keith.

I ran Macjanitor and repaired permissions. This allowed me to shutdown. But
only temporarily. Since starting the machine again I'm back to the same
problem. I tried running Macjanitor again but this has not helped. Still
can't shutdown.

phonenet

2003-02-19 Thread wyvern
I know.one day I will catch up but for now I have 4 macs and a
printer sort of networked. Three and the printer are all quite happy on
appletalk but the other isn't, I can connect to it via
ethernet...the problem being of course if i want to connect to it
and use the printer i'd need the printer on my modem port.

Much easier to admit my low tech status and ask

has anyone got a spare phonenet connector or two stuck in the back of a
drawer they keep meaning to clear out one day

File Sharing in 10.2.4

2003-02-19 Thread Severin Crisp
I have just tried to use FileSharing in 10.2.4 with nothing changed
from the previous setup and I am getting an error "-1028" when I try
to go to the server.
Back&Bleu do not list this error and as far as I am aware everything
else is unchanged, the ethernet cable is securely plugged in etc.
It's a two way thing as the other Mac can no longer find my hard disk.

Any suggestions please!

Re: converting video formats on Mac OSX

2003-02-19 Thread Shay Telfer

I have a need to extract files from DVD and then be able to convert
them in to .mov and .mpg1 formats and also to convert both ways
between .mov and .mpg1.

I have successfully been able to extract DVD files using backupDVD
but so far to do the other part have had to ftp them to one of our
WinXP support staff. I'd like to streamline the process a bit so that
I can handle the whole task and as such need to find software that
will do the file format translations.

Can anybody recommend freeware/shareware or at least not to expensive
commercial software to perform this task? Quicktime Pro doesn't seem
to be up to the job of this :(

In case anybody is wondering, this is legit academic use of short
extracts of the material that traditionally would be done with a VHS
or DVD player plugged in to the lecture theater's data projector.

.mov just means it's a QuickTime movie, it could be compressed in any
number of formats. I don't know of many MPEG-1 compression codecs out
there for the Mac, not many places use MPEG-1 these days.

Commercially there's Cleaner

You could check out MediaPipe or
ffmpegX at VersionTracker

You also don't mention whether you're using OS X or 9.

Thanks,
Shay

Mac OSX10.2 comes with a Applescript that lets you import addresses
from Outlook Express & other contact manager programs.

The Script you need is called 'Import Addresses'.
It's in your Library > Scripts > Mail Scripts Folder.
Just double click it and follow the prompts.
