Re: Transaction authorization required.
Howdy all, 1/ Simplest solution is to firstly check the email through its full address (long headers) which in most cases will reveal the bogus address it was sent from, this is only it's departure point. Secondly check the link(s) (mouse right click) this will definitely point to something abnormal? Be careful not to activate any link, work offline to be 100% sure, also the aforementioned emails are very clever in looking authentic. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, just do part 2. 2/ Then zip the whole email into one file and pass it onto the relevant body it is trying to capture and then any Federal body they recommend to forward it on too. (Addresses should be available on relevant website) Oh, also the banks I deal with do not send emails direct to my addresses they utilise notice boards within their secure websites. 3/ I would then recommend a revisit of said scripts for Spam Assassin utilising above information or other software that one uses for the filtering of email. Another trick I have used with spasmodic results is to BOUNCE the email. Re: Transaction authorization required.
Thanks to everyone for for your responses. I spoke to ANZ and they confirm that it is a scam, so I'm deleting. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but isn't it just a bit too coincidental that I have literally just opened an ANZ account and just given them my .mac.com e-mail address, not my Australian work or iinet addresses? It sort of supports my own attitude towards information security. The recipients of your info may indeed have no intention/ability to use your info for any other (dodgy) purpose. But how committed are they to protecting my information from highly motivated scum-bags? Not quite enough for my money ;) Can I live without these little web niceties that may possess a sting in their tail, YES. My 2 bob's worth. Cheers Paul
Idle question!
What on earth are the spammers hoping to achieve by sending an email that has a nonsense emaill address with nothing inside. eg :- [EMAIL PROTECTED] I get them fairly regularly. :-(. Mac Malcolm McCallum [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hiding email address
While we are on the subject I remember a posting years ago that had a clever way to hide an email address displayed on a web site. Since leaving iinet the amount of spam on my personal account has dropped but I get heaps from my web site address. Does anyone know or remember how to disguise an address from the robots? Re: Hiding email address
The easiest way is to make a graphic with your email address and post the graphic on the site instead of a text based email address. Problem with this though is that people have to manually enter address into their email client. There is software available that puts your email address in a non spider friendly format. Though I'm not sure if there are freeware programs or not. You can also if you know a bit of javascript design solutions that put the different sections of your email address into vars that can be called by functions to reconstruct the right email address. I would have to do a search through some of my webservers mailing lists to get the code though. Now days programs like Dreamweaver MX 2004 have extensions available to do this type of thing as well. I'm sure there are other methods as well depending on the software you have available. What program/method do you use for making web pages as this may determine the best method for you. Re: Hiding email address
Here is an excellent program which I have used for years and it is free. SpamStopper http://www.railheaddesign.com/ How does it work? SpamStopper encodes the text of your email address so that it no longer looks like an email address in your HTML, which makes all the current harvesting spambots ignore it when they scan internet pages. Basically, indexing spiders look for certain email address-identifying characters, and SpamStopper makes it so that those characters aren't displayed - it's pretty much that simple. All you have to do with the SpamStopper application is enter your email address and optionally specify the email subject and link text you would like to be displayed. Then you just click the Convert button and you get the encoded output - ready to copy and paste into your site creation tool of choice. airport
I have developed a problem with my wireless airport connection. My ibook will not recognize airport base. No signal. I have been using airport for 4 months, then suddenly it has dropped out. The problem initially showed up by showing a signal, but not able to connect to the web. Then within an hour no signal. Have tried admin utility and set up assistance. Will not recognise network password No DCHP address appears, No IP address or Subnet mask Have tried everything! Resetting airport base, tried to establish a new network name and password. My wireless card is firmware version 9,52. Airport admin 4.0. Is is possible that my card has stopped working.? Is there a way I can check. I have noticed an airport ID number in one of configuration windows which must be either the base or the card? Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to shed some light on this situation. Thanks Janis

Another trick I have used with spasmodic results is to BOUNCE the email. Please don't do this. A lot of spam fakes the From: address. All you'll be doing is annoying others with false bounces. Even if the bounce does reach the spammer, the chances are they'll just ignore the bounce and keep on mailing you anyway. As many (most?) phishing attacks try to trick you into visiting a website, chances are the From: address is either fake or the address of a legit user with nothing to do with the scam. Also consider disabling HTML message display in your email client. That should prevent messages from including fake links and all sorts of other nasties. -- Craig Ringer
