Re: Suggestions for home finance package

2005-10-19 Thread Shay Telfer

Advice please.

I am getting sick of the number of hours each month it takes me to
insert my downloaded bank statements into the complicated Excel
spreadsheet I have set up to manage my home finances.

I want to import internet banking statements and allocate expense
items (from 3 accounts) to categories such as fuel, utilities,
insurance, shopping, etc. My wife is also starting up two small home
businesses, so I would like to manage them too.

Can anyone suggest something with this functionality without a huge
learning curve? Up to $100 is probably reasonable.

You could try Moneydance or iBank for the home stuff.

Have fun,
Shay (Still laughing at the Merrick and Rosso iPod pouches :)

Turns your idle computer screen into an airplane window, complete
with a moving aerial view. Each time the screensaver plays, a
unique flight path forms. Be patient: Let the screensaver play for
a while, and you will see that this flight does have a destination...

This has been on Elaine's iMac for several months. She says "Boring,
Boring. Same flight, same people, same view, same landing". (Uha
don't know about that as she's never let it get that far.)

Fwd: Indexing

2005-10-19 Thread Ronda Brown

Sorry Peter,

Notice that you are not using OSX 10.4 Tiger.
So Spotlight does not apply to you.

To Index in Panther:
Select the disk or folder you want to index in the Finder.
Choose File > Get Info.
Click Content Index, then click Index Now.

Cheers,
Ronni

eMacs no longer available for direct consumer purchase Apple has
removed the eMac from the general consumer online store, instead
offering the machine only in lots of 8 through the education channel.

Second: OS9 had an indexing feature which after an initial
indexing could then be updated which is obviously much quicker
than doing the whole index again. As a relative newbie to OSX it
seems that the update feature is not available in OS X and the
whole index needs to be recreated rather than updated. Is this
correct or am I missing something?

As soon as Tiger starts up the first time, Spotlight indexes all
the files on all mounted volumes.
Thereafter, however, Spotlight will quickly and unobtrusively index
new or modified files in the background.

If you find ,as Edward did yesterday that some files were not being
found by Spotlight, you may need to re-index.

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
Click Spotlight.
Click the Privacy tab.
Drag a folder or even an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.

Remove the item or volume you just added.
Spotlight will re-index the contents of the item you initially
dragged to the list.

Depending on how many and what kind of files you have it can take
upwards of an hour or two to re-index.

Cheers,
Ronni

Thanks for this. It's great... for a few days anyway. Now I need

That swinging Mighty Mouse is interesting.
Any ideas for another great screensaver? I've gone back to a

What I like to do is create smart playlists which put random tracks
onto the iPod. However, I find that this puts random tracks, not
full albums, which is my preferred way of listening. Does anyone
know of a way to put random albums in a playlist as opposed to tracks?

I'm thinking AppleScript but can't find anything.

Cheers,

Read the iTunes Help about the Shuffle feature. In recent versions of
the iPod software, Shuffle does different things whether you have
selected artists, albums, songs or playlists.
