Re: .xml doc

2007-03-30 Thread David Tapper

Hi Rosalyn,

XML isn't really an image format. The file might actually be what's
called an SVG file, which is a type of XML file that programs such as
Illustrator can open and save. I would suggest saving the file as
SVG and trying that.

On the other hand, is the file your working with meant to be an
image? If it's just text or information, then you would want to edit
it in a program other than Illustrator. Did you double-click the
file to open it? It might be that the file is identified as an
Illustrator SVG file when it's really just a text XML file.

You can edit XML files with Property List Editor which is a program
you will only have if you have installed developer tools (you could
find it in /Developer/Applications/Utilities/). Otherwise you would
have to edit it in a text editor such as TextEdit (this can be
complicated, because you have to be careful about changing the tags).

Good luck
David

Hi,

Firstly what I need to know is how do I save an xml document in

I can open it in AI but when I make changes it will not save as an xml
again, it converts to an .ai doc.
I need it to be an xml to get the info onto the website.

Hopefully this makes sense and the answer is simple
Any advice welcome!!

Hi Rosalyn

It depends on the kind of Mac you are using.

The previous kind of Macs, PowerPC (PPC), can only use an emulator to do
this.

The one people use(d) is Virtual PC:

www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

The current Intel Macs can run Windows natively.
To accomplish this Apple provides a piece of software called Boot Camp:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

There is also Parallels for simultaneously running both operating systems:

Re: 17 Powerbook sends vibrations through body ?

2007-03-30 Thread David Moyle
To sort out this mess..

A three prong plug has an extra connection for an earth. It also means that
heavy waited objects plugged in can't fall out as fast! The chargers for the
PPC laptops and Intel laptops originally came with two adaptors to plug into
the physical charger. A long extenstion cord that has always been equipped
with a three pronged end and also a shorter model that allows the charger to
be plugged in directly that is only two pronged which is quite dangerous!

That is why major electrical devices such as VCR, TV, Microwave always have
three pronged plugs to earth the device where a simply kettle will not. Also
on a laptop it is not too much of an issue since the current is brought down
to only 12v so it shouldn't cause too much harm to yourself... (Any
disclaimer you've read also applies to what I've just typed..)

Hi Bob,

the MB ships with both of them. If you look at the Apple site it is
described this way..

An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length,
while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier
and more compact way to travel.

My 2 pin adaptor and 3 pin extension cord both plug into my power

Eugene , just what 3 prong extension cord is this ?
Does your 2 pin Power block plug into the end of it ?

save as Word 97-2003 which will save as an .doc extension which is fine for

Re: airport 802.11n

2007-03-30 Thread David Moyle
Hey Edward

In basic no.

The IEEE specification of IEEE 802.11n is the new standard of wireless
transfer to eventually replace 802.11g. It has a transfer rate of 108Mbps
compared to 802.11g's of only 54Mbps. The new standard is also supposed to
get better range and quality.

Only the brand new Airport Extremes (In a square box which looks like a
miniature Mac Mini) can work at 802.11n or any other new Access Point which
operates at 802.11n. Now take note, the update provided by Apple which costs
a few dollars I believe only works on the latest Intel Macs minus the budget
17 iMac. (I just checked, it costs $2.99AUD) (Important note: The Enabler
is included free with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n. If
you purchase a new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you do not need to purchase
the Enabler separately.)

Another thing to throw into the equation is the specification of 802.11n
hasn't been ratified by the IEEE and isn't supported by many companies or
access points, despite this Apple has released the new Apple Airports and
the latest computers with this feature.

I hope that answered your question and didn't confuse you more..

Thanks, David Moyle

2007-03-30 Thread James / Hans Kunz

lets go technical
all switchmode power supplies have a capacitor effect within the
internal transformer plus as spike protection there are 1 or 2 820pf
capacitors between primary (240v) secondary (plug to powerbook) so
a small current of up to 3ma can powerup the frame of you laptop
plug in the power pack into mains (but not into laptop) with a
digital multimeter you can see around 105v ac static coming from the
power pack if you measure to the mains earth (powerpack plug outer
ring - mains earth pin)

I imagine this has something to do with why occasionally I get a small

I guess it must be electricity running through my body. For all you

Re: 17 Powerbook sends vibrations through body ?

2007-03-30 Thread James Devenish

Hi all,

Yeah, it's an interesting effect. As others have mentioned, you may
notice differences depends on whether you're using battery, two-prong
or three-prong plugs. James has already mentioned one of the causes
explicitly.

I've not personally had the sensation with PowerBooks recently, but
what basically happens it that different people are naturally at
different 'ground' levels (just like static electricity shocks) and
it's quite normal. Neither the latent issue nor the tingling are
cancer threats in that case. (Or maybe we need to outlaw carpets,
clothing, and all bodily motion...) It can depend on various factors,
just like static electricity does.

If you've ever been in contact with alternate mains phases, you'll
appreciate the fact that your hair doesn't actually stand on end with
this one! Seriously, though, this is usually the nature resistance and
capacitance, and if you're experiencing what everyone else
experiences, it's probably as unescapable as gravity. I guess it's
noticeable with PowerBooks because they have conductive metalic cases.
Similar effects would exist with all cases (you're always multiply
linked to the grounds in your environment, even through an air gap)
but plastic is below the threshold of our 'conscious sensation'.

Probably nothing better than a party trick, I'm afraid,
James

Hi Rosemary

Not sure if this helps, but...

I had a SE W550i which used to sync perfectly. then one day it just
wouldn't, same error as yours. It also stopped syncing perfectly with
my car (but would do so grudgingly, mostly)

I never found out why and assumed that the bluetooth was a bit
buggered from being repeatedly dropped. I lost it recently and
replaced with a K800 (whoo-hooo! 3.2mp camera) which is quite happy
with isync.

My daughter's K700i never synced at all with her iBook (via bluetooth
adapter) but does so quite easily on a Macbook.

Unfortunately I have googled for Apple articles on it without
success, and as usual, you can't talk to anyone at Apple.

Needless to say SonyEricsson say its a Mac problem

try other computers with your k700???
